What I did before was, I'll transfer their mail to their "personal folder",
than use eseutil.exe to defrag.

We have another drive we have added for the defrag and we need to defrag the
database because there is only 300mb of free space on the database drive and
to expand the disk, we need to move the database of the disk and expand them
move it back.

Here is a snippet from Q272234 that tells you about offline defragmentation.

"Generally, however, avoid offline defragmentation because it is an
expensive procedure. When offline defragmentation runs, it creates a new
database file and then copies all the data in the old file to the new file,
which can take a long time. On average, it takes about one hour to
defragment 5 to 10 GB of disk space. Also, you need enough free space for
the offline defragmentation process to hold the new file. As a general rule,
you should have 100 percent more free space than the amount you are
defragmenting."

So the question then begs whether you have the free space to even
perform the defrag. May I also ask why you feel that it is so completely
necessary to defragment your database? Is there a problem with the server?
Is it not running smoothly? Are you anticipating that it will never grow
larger? Basically, all you are doing with eseutil is reclaiming the white
space. That is it. White space simply explained is just space in the
database that is not currently being used, but will be used as the database
grows. Since the space has already been reserved, your server does not have
to work nearly as hard to procure more space and increase the size of the
database.

We have an on going problem in our company, our Exchange database exceed
60gb on some of our servers. One of these databases has 13gb of free space
in it. We have tried to defrag this database multiple times and have failed
to complete in the time window every time.

Does anyone know what if any the limitations of the ESEUTIL are for Exchange
5.5?
Has anyone ever done this before?
Is there any other third party tools that can be used to defrag our
database?
What would you recommend?

I realise among the possible selections of mail applications to import from does not include MS Outlook. The closest is Outlook Express.

I have another experience with fragmentation. After half a year of running
E2k (before that we used sendmail) with mostly POP3 clients, our database
reached 35 GB. I never run offline gefrag at that time, but every week
online defrag was done. Because we had another problem, all the mailboxes
were moved to the different server. Now is database size 4 GB Is this
O.K.?

I
believe your Dell guy is wrong.  I've heard from too many software
vendors who deal with Microsoft products and licensing all the time that OWA
users do need a CAL.  If they didn't, you could get away with buying no
CAL's by just having everyone use the web interface.

RE: OWA usage

2002-01-25 Thread Woodrick, Ed
Title: Message

The
real answer is that it depends on your licensing. Not all licenses are written
the same. I know that some licenses require a CAL for each machine. Some
probably require a CAL per user. I believe that the standard commercial license
is per machine.

AND
don't forget that this is an authenticated user, so if you are running on a W2K
AD, then you will probably also need a W2K CAL also.

But
most importantly, the answer is to read the license yourself and then consult
your lawyer for any interpretations.

software vendors who deal with Microsoft products and licensing all the
time that OWA users do need a CAL.  If they didn't, you could get
away with buying no CAL's by just having everyone use the web
  interface.

Here is a snippet from Q272234 that tells you about offline
defragmentation.

"Generally, however, avoid offline defragmentation because it is
an expensive procedure. When offline defragmentation runs, it creates a
new database file and then copies all the data in the old file to the
new file, which can take a long time. On average, it takes about one
hour to defragment 5 to 10 GB of disk space. Also, you need enough free
space for the offline defragmentation process to hold the new file. As a
general rule, you should have 100 percent more free space than the
amount you are defragmenting."

So the question then begs whether you have the free space to
even perform the defrag. May I also ask why you feel that it is so
completely necessary to defragment your database? Is there a problem
with the server? Is it not running smoothly? Are you anticipating that
it will never grow larger? Basically, all you are doing with eseutil is
reclaiming the white space. That is it. White space simply explained
is just space in the database that is not currently being used, but will
be used as the database grows. Since the space has already been
reserved, your server does not have to work nearly as hard to procure
more space and increase the size of the database.

We have an on going problem in our company, our Exchange database
exceed 60gb on some of our servers. One of these databases has 13gb of
free space in it. We have tried to defrag this database multiple times
and have failed to complete in the time window every time.

Does anyone know what if any the limitations of the ESEUTIL are for
Exchange 5.5? Has anyone ever done this before? Is there any other third
party tools that can be used to defrag our database? What would you
recommend?

  The
real answer is that it depends on your licensing. Not all licenses are written
the same. I know that some licenses require a CAL for each machine. Some
probably require a CAL per user. I believe that the standard commercial
  license is per machine.

  AND
don't forget that this is an authenticated user, so if you are running on a
W2K AD, then you will probably also need a W2K CAL also.

  But
most importantly, the answer is to read the license yourself and then consult
  your lawyer for any interpretations.

Let's begin here by saying that IANAL and that this is not to be
taken as legal advice ( ask your Microsoft Licensing rep and get it in
  writing) but...
The following is an extract from the Open Licensing Agreement that
I dug out yesterday when talking to Microsoft to get hold of a copy of
  Outlook 2000.

"Client Access.  Licensee must acquire a
separate CAL for MS Exch svr in order to use Microsoft Client
Software to Access or otherwise utilize Microsoft Exchange
Server and/or to access or otherwise utilize the services of any other
electronic mail server software.  {the following is the relevant
part} Licensee may also use that same CAL for any other digital electronic
device that Licensee uses less than 20% of Licensee's total connection
  time.

It goes on to define total connection time but that isn't
  relevant.

The important part here is that you only need CALs for the number
of mailboxes that you have configured that are actually accessed by
clients logging in and authenticating.  If a user uses OWA to access
their mailbox all the time, you would require a CAL for that user, but not
necessarily a CAL for every computer that they login from.

As I said "I am not a Lawyer", but I don't think Microsoft really
intended that you should have to have a license for every possible
workstation that your users could connect from, only for the number of
mailboxes that you have configured on the server that are accessed by your
users.  However I bet hey wish they could require a license for every
  machine you login from ;-)

Exchange 5.5 SP4 using Outlook 98. NT 4.0 SP6a

I have a user who sent a meeting request to four people this morning.
She received a message back from the System Administrator account

this afternoon saying two of the recipeints could not be contacted.

However, the two recipients listed were NOT even invited on the

initial request. Not only were they not invited, but they are no

longer even members of the company, so I don't see where they could

have "accidentally" been invited. There not in USRMGR or the

Global Address list. This makes me wonder how many other people

received the invitation that ARE part of the company but aren't

one of the four members that should have been invited. When I go

back to the original message, there are only four individual people

listed. Baffling.

This user also occasionally has mail get stuck in her OUTBOX, which

is probably a totally separate issue. I find 6 or 7 reasons in

technet that could be causing this issue, but I just thought I

would throw the information in, just in case it rang a bell with

somebody else.

Anybody ever have a meeting request issue like this?

Thanks.

Subject: Success (or failure) running Exch 5.5. on W2k

I just inherited an installation of Exchange 5.5. on W2k, with about 50
users. It was configured poorly (e.g. the installer didn't bother disabling
IIS's SMTP services!).

Before I take the time to fix it up, just wanted to take a poll of whether
people were satisfied with Exch 5.5 on W2k servers. Whether that setup has
worked well for people, or caused particular problems, focusing on
stability. I saw a couple of ringing endorsements in this forum about two
weeks ago. Any offsetting sob stories I should know about?

If it doesn't work well we could upgrade to Exchange 2000. But for this
firm wouldn't particularly care about the advantages--unless it's more
stable.

Thanks,

You are really better off running OWA on a different box than Exchange.
That's really what it was designed for. Second, if you uninstall the SMTP
Service from IIS, it will NOT shut down the Exchange services. They are
completely separate. But you do need to actually uninstall it, not just
shut it down. Re-install IIS, and choose to add/remove components, then
just remove the SMTP Service.

I've tried that, it comes up that the page cannot be desplayed. I have IIS
running and it does webpages fine, but not this. Boy am I frustrated. It
would be nice if it worked perfect the first time and then you got to play
with errors. But when you don't know what to expect or do for your first

Let's begin here by saying that IANAL and that this is not to be
taken as legal advice ( ask your Microsoft Licensing rep and get it in
writing) but...
The following is an extract from the Open Licensing Agreement that I
dug out yesterday when talking to Microsoft to get hold of a copy of Outlook
2000.

"Client Access.  Licensee must acquire a
separate CAL for MS Exch svr in order to use Microsoft Client
Software to Access or otherwise utilize Microsoft Exchange
Server and/or to access or otherwise utilize the services of any other
electronic mail server software.  {the following is the relevant part}
Licensee may also use that same CAL for any other digital electronic device
that Licensee uses less than 20% of Licensee's total connection time.

It
goes on to define total connection time but that isn't
relevant.

The important part here is that you only need CALs for the number of
mailboxes that you have configured that are actually accessed by clients
logging in and authenticating.  If a user uses OWA to access their
mailbox all the time, you would require a CAL for that user, but not
necessarily a CAL for every computer that they login from.

As
I said "I am not a Lawyer", but I don't think Microsoft really intended that
you should have to have a license for every possible workstation that your
users could connect from, only for the number of mailboxes that you have
configured on the server that are accessed by your users.  However I
bet hey wish they could require a license for every machine you login from
;-)

I do run OWA on a different box but have yet to see your statement shown to
be true or documented. I would also contend that OWA is meant to run on the
same box and that running on another box is only needed in large
organizations or if you (the admin) want to put all of your IIS stuff on one

I think that the reason I said that is that generally, the purpose for
running OWA is for remote connectivity. For that, most of the time, the OWA
server gets stuck in the DMZ, right? OK, if you have a VPN, you don't, but
heck, if you have a VPN, then you don't need to use OWA as much. Anyhoo, if
your OWA server is your Exchange server, you don't want to be putting your
Exchange server in the DMZ, do you? I do realize that you "can" run OWA on
the same server, I just don't think that it happens that often that you
feasibly can.

"You are really better off running OWA on a different box than Exchange.
That's really what it was designed for."

I do run OWA on a different box but have yet to see your statement shown to
be true or documented. I would also contend that OWA is meant to run on the
same box and that running on another box is only needed in large
organizations or if you (the admin) want to put all of your IIS stuff on one
box.

About what exactly? You aren't very descriptive. There's obviously
something I said that you don't agree with. What part? If I am wrong, that
is fine, but I would most certainly like to know which part so that I can
learn as well.

I've installed my first 5.5 on W2k. Can't seem to get the hang of what to do
next. OWA comes up with a permission error connecting to the /exchange site.
When you say shut down the smtp service, is that after or before the
install. If I shut it down now, will that be shutting down the exchanges
service?

RE: Success (or failure) running Exch 5.5. on W2k

2002-01-25 Thread Ellery July

If you do that you might as well put exchange in the DMZ the system is it
not just as secure and you will need less admin attention. Why not put the
exchange server in the DMZ? Help me to understand that.

I do not run OWA in the DMZ because that opens more holes and demands more
admin attention. I run OWA with it own IP address and only open port 443
open the internet - all other ports are closed. If this is less secure then
what you are doing please explain it to me. I am willing to change my setup
and do not consider myself a security guy so all info in this regard is
helpful.

My point is that where does it say OWA was to run on another server and
please show me how OWA or the admin is better off doing it that way? I
understand it can be done but do not see the increase in security but do see
the increase in admin set up and problem solving time.

I've installed my first 5.5 on W2k. Can't seem to get the hang of what to do
next. OWA comes up with a permission error connecting to the /exchange site.
When you say shut down the smtp service, is that after or before the
install. If I shut it down now, will that be shutting down the exchanges
service?

Does anyone know how to send a reminder (recurring) message? I have several
users that need to be reminded of tasks that have to be done (once a week,
once a month, once a year, etc.) They do not want this to be a recurring
meeting eating up time slots.

Thanks in advance for all of your help and harassment.

Deleting them from outlook can be time consuming and highlighting all

For instance, just opening a dos cmd prompt, changing directories to

I try the highlight all, but in big inboxes, I always get an error "Some
of the items could not be delete, they were either moved, already
deleted or access is denied". I am logged on through an administrative
account. This is why i've always used the M drive to delete, because I
run into this problem. Any ideas?

delete emails from that specific inbox folder on the M: drive? For

that folder and just del *.* ? Is this ok to do? Recommended? Not

Thanks for the input.

When assigning a recurring task does it send you a message to let you know
you have to do it again and again and again?

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98. Exchange 5.5 sp4

Does anyone know how to send a reminder (recurring) message? I have several
users that need to be reminded of tasks that have to be done (once a week,
once a month, once a year, etc.) They do not want this to be a recurring
meeting eating up time slots.

Thanks in advance for all of your help and harassment.

Exmerge for Exchange 5.5 & 2000

2002-01-25 Thread Paul Armstrong

Hello All,

I am working on rebuilding a server running Exchange 5.5. The server is
running SBS 4.5 and I am rebuilding it as Windows 2000 Server running
Exchange 2000. I plan on using Exmerge to export the mailboxes to PST,
then rebuild the server, then use Exmerge to import the PST's back into
the mailboxes. I am trying to find beforehand if I will run into any
issues using Exmerge from a 5.5 box to a 2K box? The mailboxes will all
have the same names as the previous mailboxes so it looks like I wont
have a problem. i dont have an extra box to run a test run so I need to
find out beforehand what issues I may run into. Any ideas what could
possibly go wrong and how I can avoid them. I plan to move all Public
Folder data to a mailbox beforehand since Exmerge cant do anything for
Public Folders. TIA!!

Thanks for the input.

When assigning a recurring task does it send you a message to let you know
you have to do it again and again and again?

Thanks again,

Mike

In outlook use the options then use View-Options-Do not deliver before.

Or you can assign a task and put in recurring updates

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98. Exchange 5.5 sp4

Does anyone know how to send a reminder (recurring) message? I have several
users that need to be reminded of tasks that have to be done (once a week,
once a month, once a year, etc.) They do not want this to be a recurring
meeting eating up time slots.

Thanks in advance for all of your help and harassment.

That is typical but you can stop antigen then start up exchange services. If
you turn the antigen services to manual - exchange will come on but antigen
will not.

RE: can't send message on behalf

2002-01-25 Thread Chris Thelen

When I do this with Exchange 5.5 SP4 and outlook 2002 SP1, It doesn't give
the name of the public folder as the from address. Am I missing something
like where the option is to say from?

In Exch Admin,
Give the delegate "Send As" rights to the mailbox.

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4..

I have a delegate that is trying to REPLY to a message from the mailbox.
When they try and send the message they get 'you do not have permission of
the individual to send this email' message.

I looked at Google and it says to give the delegate Owner permissions to the
Inbox. I have done that and I still get the same message.

Please help.

Bummer - there was a posting about this a few weeks back. I think they
were bumping it to PSS as it seems to happen for everyone. Maybe it's in
the XP SP1?

Subject: Contact List view?!?!

Hey all, I have an Office XP box that for some reason when I click on
the To.. button in email and goto contacts it shows the name, mail type
as SMTP/FAX and the display name and I have to scroll way over. Its not
like the

name (business fax)
name (email)

I went into the PAB program and looked at it there and its the same way.
I dont see any way to change the views. I tried removing the Outlook
Address Book and re-adding it etc etc.. with no luck.. any ideas? List
