RE: IMC accepts messages but nothing further
Hello All, Little weird problem An Exchange 5.5 machine with SP4 is installed only for IMC. The messages are accepted but I don't see them in the queue's for delivery nor the event viewer is complaining. Stopping the IMC end in that I just need to reboot altogether (which takes about 10-15min). After the reboot all the mail gets delivered. Anyone else experianced this challenging issue? IMC refuses connections
Hi Everyone ! We are using Exchange 5.5 and IMC is used for sending and receiving internal and external SMTP mails but through a Linux SMTP box that directly conncets to the ISP .Now the problem is that when there is a large no of queues on the IMC which then forwards it to the linux box ,the linux box gets the message that connection refused by the IMC .We have also tired increasing the no in the max connections to a host in the IMC settings from 10 to 500 then to it doesnt work . Has anybody out here faced the same problem . I tried to search for this in technet but didnt get any info . Any info would be appreciated . Harshang (MCSE,CCNA) __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! MTA not starting
Current setup - Exchange 5.5 SP4 on WinNT 4.0 SP5 PDC Problem is everytime I restart the server , the Exchange MTA (Message Transfer Agent) service does not start. This causes other dependent services like the IMS not to start as well. I shut down all the services properly before the restart but it does not help when the server comes up. When I look in the event logs, the MTA conducts field engineering on restart as though it was not shutdown properly. What could be causing this. RE: spam question
Depends on what your firewall does. Many can act as a store and forward device. In this set up the mail to received by the firewall and then forwarded into your internal mailing system. As the firewall is technically a mail server at this point then is should act just as any other mail application. Other firewalls just proxy the connection to the mail system. Same principal applies. You want to set up the rejection at the point of entry so you don't have mail being accepted by your systems. Personally, I find that trying to filter for spam to be a futile exercise. Between the relayers, the spam houses and the opt in mailers that users sign up for, it's next to impossible to keep up with them. You could end up spending more time and money trying to prevent spam, then you are spending for your users to hit the delete key. -Original Message- From: Matthew Carpenter [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 5:13 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: spam question I understand the issue, and yes relaying can be handled at the firewall. The Spam House and the relayer. The spam house has customers pay them to send mail to people on their mailing lists or ones provided by the customer. These folks have domain names, ISP's and semi human operators. Some times you can complain enough to them that you don't want their mail offerings and they will remove you from their lists. These folks can also be blocked by domain name/ip address. The second type is the realer. These subterranean creatures use open relays to bomb away. These folks are harder to catch as they will use anyone they can find that's a relayer to sent their mail. It's about impossible to block these folks using domain names/ip addresses as they change the relays they use about as often as I change my socks (daily before you ask). I dislike these weasels the most. -Original Message- From: Matthew Carpenter [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 2:54 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: spam question I have never heard of filtering spam at the firewall. Better to block them at the firewall (if possible) and return them a 5xx error. Dropping the request (as some do) returns a 4xx error so the mail will queue on their systems and retry. As too why they would have a read receipt is beyond me. Most spammer could give a damn if their mail gets there or not. They are charging by the piece sent, not delivered. Spam houses take the add, merge it with a database of names and open up the mail cannon. Relayers wouldn't want a receipt anyways. That would give me a way to go after them directly rather than try to get the open relay to shut his hole. -Original Message- From: Drewski [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 1:09 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: spam question Doesn't that violate RFCs? :P -- Drew Visit http://www.drewncapris.net! ADSIEDIT is part of the Windows 2000 Support Tools which can be found on your Windows 2000 Server installation CD. Browse to the Support\Tools folder and run Setup to install these tools. When you open the tool go to the domain then to the DC object and then to the Domain Controllers object. Delete the server that no longer exists. Hello, perhaps a win2k list would have a better explination, but- there is not a hard, fast # set for SAM size in NT 4.0. This will require that you restart at least up to the Information Store level(SA, DS and IS) Be aware that if you rely on flat file copying, it may be more difficult to restore the files. Re: Sendmail Exchange
Sorry, my fault. You still need contacts to forward to external (means non Exchange) address in AD UC snap-in. Maybe it could be set by code :-( Maybe anothoer way, if you are familiar with unix world, let send Exchange all THAT mail to the 1 sendmail mailbox (you need 1 contact) and then sort it by TO: headers to final recipients mailboxes. But, take care, TO: is not allways the final recipient e.g. BCC or mail-lists recipients. In this case X- headers could help you. RE: Sendmail Exchange
It's a little more complicated than that. I think it will still work the same exact way it did with 5.5 and Custom Recipients. If you want to forward the mail off the Exchange server, to another e-mail address, you will still have to create a contact for that other e-mail address. Then, once the contact is created, you can set the user properties (under Exchange general) to deliver to the alternate address (the contact in this case). I don't believe that you can simply add the sendmail address in the Forwarding Address box. I could be wrong, but I don't think it will work that way. One of my users' win2k system crashed. He had to fix his system using repair disk. Everything works but his outlook 2002 is not working. It gives him error like system cannot log you in. It was working just fine before. I don't see any error log in the server. I tried to re-create his profile but nothing happen. I also made sure rpc locater startup is set to manual. Title: Message Defragging it means running eseutil. From a cmd prompt the proper syntax would be: eseutil /d priv.edb /is This must be run from the drive that the priv.edb is located and this drive should have a minimum of 16 GB free space or the defrag will not complete, you should really have about 110% of the size of the database in free space available for the defrag to run. The exchange services must be stopped in order for the defrag to run, and you can expect it to take a while to run. I have been searching technet but have not found anything yet. Any links greatly appreciated! Thanks. RE: spam question
I agree. I spend 8 or more hours each week going though spam messages forwarded from users to pick out keywords to place in out spam list. I think the best way is to educate you users and create a basic filter list to maintain. There is always the issue of explicit material in email either outgoing or incoming. David White -Original Message- From: Schwartz, Jim [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 7:54 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: spam question Depends on what your firewall does. Not an exchange system, but we managed to (at our last mail system conversion) set a 20meg server side mailbox limit with exceptions grudgingly made on a case by case basis. Users start getting warnings (popups requiring OK) at 85% anytime they do anything with server side folders. Many of them have large local folders (they are IMAP or POP clients) and are warned that they are not backed up and that the policy is to keep ONLY currently relevant messages and in no case over 90 days old (chuckle). Mail does not display in Outlook until you click on an existing i tem.
Hello Folks, Several of my users are reporting that new email doesn't appear in Outlook until they click on an existing item or perform some other action in Outlook. This appears to be isolated to a few random people. I am almost positive that if I reboot the server this behavior will go away but its only been up for 14 days since the last reboot. I can't seem to find what is causing this behavior. Perfmon shows what appears to be normal disk and memory usage. NT4.0 SP6, Exchange 5.5 SP4, Scanmail 3.51 w/eManager 3.1. I stopped and restarted the ScanMail services just for the heck of it but that didn't help any. List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

BackupExec 8.6 rev. 3878
Ok, has anyone that uses BENT 8.6 with the Exchange Server agent received the following error? Unable to attach to \\NOELANI\Microsoft Exchange Directory. The device cannot be found. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Unable to attach to \\NOELANI\Microsoft Exchange Directory. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Unable to attach to \\NOELANI\Microsoft Exchange Information Store. The device cannot be found. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Unable to attach to \\NOELANI\Microsoft Exchange Information Store. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ It seems to happen to me about 50% of the time (nightly full backups). I started with BENT 8.5, upgraded to 8.6 when we decided to get the Exchange Agent (since they wouldn't sell it for 8.5 at that time) and then later upgraded to 8.6 rev. 3878 to correct the stupid time zone issue (it would show completed jobs with a start time of 9pm when the job really started at 8pm and it only affected Indiana, Arizona and probably Hawaii users). Anyway, I had this issue prior to the new rev, so I don't think that is related. I can't find any good answers on Veritas support site, although I plan on just calling them next or checking out their newsgroup. Thought I'd check here first though. Thanks, Allen FYI, I've also upgraded the remote server agent on the Exchange Server, I exclude the EDB and log file directories from file-based backups and I've reinstalled the Exchange Agent with the new rev. And remember - Hardware Mirror and RAID Software versions of Mirroring and RAID are worth what you paid for them - nothing. You really want your Exchange Environment to be able to continue operating when you have a drive failure. Even if money is a problem, run the Promise IDE stuff, it's inexpensive and works. And upgrading to 5.5 is easy. Backup, Backup, and then Backup (Online) Run setup and it will upgrade in place to 5.5. Run Optimizer. Then update Exchange 5.5 to SP4, and run Optimizer again. Install the new server - Exchange 5.5, Optimizer, SP4, and Optimizer, and run the Ed Crowley Server Move - works great. Once you get this completed and this server back online, you need to think about setting mailbox limits, running mailbox manager on a regular basis, until this office can upgrade to Enterprise. I have requested the tech there to upgrade to Enterprise but that is another story. He is out today and I started getting calls from his users not being able to connect. I checked and sure enough he passed the 16 gig limit. I have never had to deal with this. How can I reduce the size of the IS without it being started? I have been searching technet but have not found anything yet. Any links greatly appreciated! Thanks. Exchange mounting problem on cluster server
Hi, Appreciate any guidance from the experts in this list. Setup Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4.0 SP6a. Have an Exchange Enterprise runs on two clustered servers with abt 800 mailboxes, last check the Private store slightly more than 16 G and Public store 29 G. IMS and OWA are on separate boxes. Exchange has been running for 4 yrs. For every one to two months I reboot the clustered servers once users start to experience slowness in their Outlook clients. Most of the time things are okay. Yesterday when I do a reboot most of the resources mounted okay except the Information Store Resource. Strange thing is that, the information store take too long to mount on the active server, then the passive server actually take over the cluster resources and everything mounted okay including the IS. Is this normal or is there some problem with the IS? Since yesterday until now everything seems to be okay. Thanks for any help. OMG Im in big trouble. Exchange admins help.
Here's the story, I was moving mailboxes from one machine to another because backup exec was toast on the mail sever. It would backup and say it was ok but you could never restore. I moved over a couple of mailboxes and the ADMINISTRATOR account. Next thing I know I see a scsi controller error on the machine and it reboots. I received an error stating boot.ini was bad then it went to could not load ntsokrnl.exe. please restore the file. I swapped the scsi raid card for the exact same model. Started the server up and received the same message. I edited the boot.ini to point to the correct drive. The machine booted and I received a ton of errors. It somehow lost most of the registry settings. Services dont start up including exchange. I tried to do a setup /disasterrecovery but it doesn't recognize that exchange is installed on the machine. If I try to run exchange setup it states that IIS needs to be installed and that I must first delete the crapped out server from exchange system manager. My questions. 1)What do I do next? 2)Should I remove the server from exchange system manager then reinstall dump the log files back in and do a eseutil repair? 3)The accounts I moved were not important except for the ADMINISTRATOR account. I cant seem to delete the mailbox because it can not connect to the dead server. Is there a way to recreate the all powerful administrator mailbox? 4)How screwed am I (Be nice it's been a bad day) Im running exchange 2000 all around on compaq servers Thanks fer any help Zeek List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

Done 4 myself this way, including 1 at a remote site 1200 miles away, with a MAC technician pushing the buttons locally. run (don't walk!) to your nearest phone and give PSS a call. Obviously something major has gone wrong with your hard disks and without a verified backup you are toast. You may be lucky and PSS can help you recover most of the data. Either way the investment will probably be worth it for the I called on the experts and even they couldn't help us factor alone. -Original Message- From: zeek Turmoil [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, 28 February 2002 9:36 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: OMG Im in big trouble.
