RE: Outlook 2003 Cache mode issue

There can be a lag of up to 36 hours between creating the user and it being in
the OAB.

Has it been 24 hours since the new user was created?
If not, I think the exchange generates a new address book each night and
the outlook clients in cached mode download that new address book first
time they connect after the generation.
I always tell our cache mode users that new users and dist lists wont
show in their address book until the day after I create new users and
dlists.

Is the missing address a new user? If so, it sounds like the OAB hasn't
rebuilt correctly or this Outlook user hasn't downloaded the OAB
updates.
I'd set OAB diagnostics logging to medium or higher then force the OAB
to rebuild (be careful if you have a huge organization). Check the
event log for any issues. If it rebuilds successfully, make sure this
user has downloaded the updates and then check again.

We have a user who is using Outlook 2003 in Cache mode. He wasn't seeing
one address in the GAL(Ex2k3).
I got him to untick Cache mode in Outlook and restart the laptop. When
he logged back into Outlook the name appeared.
Now he is back in Cache mode the name has gone again.
Any ideas on why just one address disappears when working in Cache mode?

AFAIK, no PDAS are syncing to the laptop.

Certificates

2008-10-28 Thread McCready, Rob
By default, a certificate is installed on the first Hub Transport Server in an
Exchange 2007 environment, which last for 1 year, correct?

My question is, if I want to buy a certificate from a Certificate Authority (to
use as verification of encryption between us and another company), do I place
it on the Hub Transport server to replace the "default" certificate, or do I
need more than one certificate? One to replace the Hub Certificate which will
expire after one year, and one to be installed on the Edge Transport Server(s)
in the DMZ?

Thanks all,

Rob

2008-10-28 Thread Michael B. Smith
HMC comes with lots of guidance. Microsoft.com/serviceproviders is a good
place to start.

If you aren't going to go into this in a big way, I wouldn't recommend it
for you. There are lots of providers out there, the barrier to entry is
pretty high, and the licensing is even more confusing than normal.

BT has reseller plans for hosted Exchange on that side of the pond. You
might want to talk to them.

Put up a dns record with the correct url on the dns server that your internal

Outlook 07 prompting for passwords

2008-10-28 Thread Domingue, Jamie
All,

We have Outlook users who are prompted for a password multiple times daily.
Whether they enter it or not the prompt continues to appear.

Current environment:

Single domain running Windows 2003 DC's.

Users all use Outlook 2007 SP1, outlook setup for Outlook anywhere. This seems
to only be happening when the users are connected to the LAN.

Servers: Exchange 2007 SP1 update rollup 4 set up in a CCR environment.
Exchange 2007 CAS/Hub server running SP1 and the update rollup 4.

We also still have an Exchange 2003 Sp2 server as we are in the process of
migrating.

This only became an issue about 1 month after we moved a "test" group to the
new 07 server. Not all users are getting the prompt. I have applied the
hotfix mentioned in KB957909 but his doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

Anyone seen this and have any recommendations on how to resolve?

Thanks in advance,

Jamie Domingue

Create a DNS zone on your internal DNS for company.com. Then place the

Correct, the self-signed certificate installed on the Hub Transport server
will expire after 12 months and therefore requires renewal. My opinion here
is that, generally, the self-signed certificate is ideal for Hub-Hub,
Hub-Edge and Edge-Hub communications so in your case I'd leave the
self-signed certificate on the Hub Transport server and renew as required.

I don't disagree with the answer below, but if you do go for a commercial cert

Much more cost effective. 200 bucks or so from GoDaddy.

Subject: Outlook 07 prompting for passwords

I think the barriers are lower than they used to be.
But it is quickly getting crowded out there for hosted services.
Obviously economies of scale come into play here.

Does anyone know of a book/guide about setting up Exchange 2007 hosting?
We've been asked by a few small charities this week whether we do this and
we think it may be worth having a look at for them.

RE: Outlook 07 prompting for passwords

2008-10-28 Thread Neil Hobson
I'm aware that Microsoft is tracking an issue with IIS7 and kernel mode
windows authentication. Taken from the comments at the bottom of this
Exchange Team Blog post:

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/06/20/449053.aspx

Hey Folks,
As promised, here's an update on the reprompting issue that many of you have
encountered.
The gist of the issue is that IIS7 uses kernel mode windows authentication
by default. Turning this off will fix reprompting. I will post a detailed
update once I dig through some more and talk to the IIS PD, but for now I
wanted to provide this update so you can give it a shot and let me know if
(no, "that") it works for you

Here's the command that needs to be run on the CAS boxes ->
%Windows%\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config /section:system.webServ
er/security/authentication/windowsAuthentication /useKernelMode:false

RE: Old 03 server

2008-10-28 Thread Phil Thompson
After some researching on this, let me rephrase my question.

In the ADSI edit, looking at the 'exchange system objects' - 'system mailbox'
There are 3 references to the 'home' server that are pointing to the old server.

- HomeMTA -

- HomeMDB -

- MsExchHomeServerName -

Maybe all I need change the server name?

Last year I upgraded from exch03 to 07 on new 03 server.

I'm sure I removed the old server correctly but(obviously I didn't) it still
pops up and I can see it being referenced in the 07 server. It doesn't seem to
be causing any problems -yet. I need to rebuild the old server and I'm afraid
it is going to mess with my current server. Any direction I can go to find out
more about this and remove it?

It is the bottom server.

I am curious how this works..

Technically there is no account on the laptop, just cached credentials and
since the domain can't be reached, no lockout has been reported. Jim said that
GPO can give an unlock period, but I would be surprised if there wasn't a
default time period for this.

I don't know that our remote users experience account lockouts when they can
reach the domain ( and believe me, we would hear about this if it was possible
). Though all of our remotes are XP.

Interesting When I get a couple minutes I need to shutdown and undock my
vista laptop and try this out.

Good idea Troy. I just tested it. It does not lock you out, there certainly was
a long pause as the machine tried REAL hard to contact the domain on my fifth

Thanks Jim, saved me the application shutdown horrors.

So Kevin, what in the heck is up with that user. Do you have pre-emptive VPN
? (if so a password change on the domain should propagate and you should be
fine) Are they using a local account rather than domain for access (my guess,
which means you are toast and have to get the laptop or give up admin pw) ?

Or even better, he is probably locked out of hotmail and has really bad

RE: Laptop Login

2008-10-28 Thread David McSpadden
Without physical access to the User accounts on the workstation or on
the domain you can not fix him. Giving him the password for local\admin
could unlock a local\user but not a domain user. For that he will need
domain access. If his domain access is locked you should see it on your
DC. If you don't see it then he is just locked and he needs to hold the
power button until all life is gone from the laptop. Then boot up and
sign on as himself on the domain making sure caps lock is off and if he
has an IBM the num locks is off so the keyboard won't report numbers
when he is typing letters. It is all 0's and 1's there is no 3 option.
It is either connected to the domain and has domain user problems or it
is not and has local user problems.

I am curious how this works..

Technically there is no account on the laptop, just cached credentials
and since the domain can't be reached, no lockout has been reported.
Jim said that GPO can give an unlock period, but I would be surprised if
there wasn't a default time period for this.

I don't know that our remote users experience account lockouts when they
can reach the domain ( and believe me, we would hear about this if it
was possible ). Though all of our remotes are XP.

Interesting When I get a couple minutes I need to shutdown and
undock my vista laptop and try this out.

Would that be default? I only do the domain admin stuff part time

He seems to be locked out of being able to login; put his password in too many

Re: OWA from LAN SSL

2008-10-28 Thread James Kerr
Thanks. How about this one. I am having this issue also with my new
watchguard server. It has created its own ssl cert for its quarantine server
but when you go to access it you get a message in IE. This is going to be a
headache for my users. Is there possibly a way to install this cert and
make it trusted on the domain for all our desktops? I may have to post this
over in ntsysadmin as now I am going a little OT.

The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a
trusted certificate authority.
The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a
different website's address.

Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or
intercept any data you send to the server.

Create a DNS zone on your internal DNS for company.com. Then place the
correct entries in there and tell your users to use webmail.company.com or
whatever it is.

I have a SSL cert that works fine for users accessing OWA from Outside our
LAN but when accessing it from within the LAN, IE says there is a problem
with the websites certificate. I know this is due to the fact that the
address is different from inside the LAN. What are some solutions to get
around this warning?

TIA

RE: OWA from LAN SSL

2008-10-28 Thread Kennedy, Jim
Couple of ideas.

Is your existing OWA cert a wild card cert? If so replace the Watchguard with
that.

Do you have your own Internal CA set up? Issue a cert to the watchguard and
your internal computers will be happy with that.

Make the Watchguard cert a trusted authority in a GPO. Again that only covers
internal computers and is the idea I like the least.

Re: Certificates

2008-10-28 Thread Tom Kern
Only one cert can be default at one time

You can get a CA cert for your Edge and leave the hub's alone as I
assume its only your Edge that will be talking to the other trusted
corp.

The new CA issued cert will become the default (direct trust) cert on
your edge and will be used for edg to hub and edge to trusted copr
communication

The things to look out for when you install the new cert on your edge-
1. you will need to redo your edge subscription
2. make sure the cert domains match the fqdn on the connectors (or
servername if $null)
3. make sure the cert is enabled for smtp

RE: Old 03 server

2008-10-28 Thread Michael B. Smith
The systemmailbox isn't a problem. You will have one of those on every
server which hosts both a SMTP Virtual Server and an Information Store.

Those get deleted when you delete the server. So.the question becomes, how
did you delete the server?

After some researching on this, let me rephrase my question.

In the ADSI edit, looking at the 'exchange system objects' - 'system
mailbox'

There are 3 references to the 'home' server that are pointing to the old
server.

- HomeMTA -

- HomeMDB -

- MsExchHomeServerName -

Maybe all I need change the server name?

Thank you,

Last year I upgraded from exch03 to 07 on new 03 server.

I'm sure I removed the old server correctly but(obviously I didn't) it still
pops up and I can see it being referenced in the 07 server. It doesn't seem
to be causing any problems -yet. I need to rebuild the old server and I'm
afraid it is going to mess with my current server. Any direction I can go to
find out more about this and remove it?

It is the bottom server.

Thank you,

I don't think you will find anyone on this side of the pond recommending BT for
anything other than a good laugh. :-) The only thing they do well is phone
lines (when you pay the bill to someone else), but I digress.

I read somewhere that Microsoft state that unless you are going to host 10,000
mailboxes then don't bother. They recommend one of the larger providers - and
there are lots of white label solutions around.

UK wise, there is probably only one company I would look at - Cobweb. A fellow
Exchange MVP is in their technical team. (UK Exchange MVPs are not that common
- only 10 or 11 of them).
http://www.cobweb.com/partner_with/partner_options.aspx

I have looked at it two or three times and opted not to bother. The headaches
are just too much.
What Michael also didn't mention was the change in support policy - if you are
doing hosted Exchange then you must have a support contract - you cannot phone
up and pay the per call fee. That further raises the entry barrier.

Someone else mentioned it was very crowded in the hosted market. There will be
a shake out soon when MS enter the market over here.

RE: Guide to Exchange 2007 hosting setup

2008-10-28 Thread Michael B. Smith
I did hosted Exchange for 8 years and got out of it, just a year ago.
Competition is too high, niches are too small, profit margin is too low.
With Microsoft's published prices in the USA - I wouldn't think of entering
that market again. As you say, I expect even greater provider confluence
within the next year.

I didn't recognize that Cobweb/Oliver had a partner program, otherwise I
would've mentioned it.
