RE: Outlook is prompting for credentials
When it's asking for password, what's the outlook connection status. Worst of all the issue is intermittent. User's only get prompted half the time. I use Outlook on two different machines and sometimes I am prompted on one of them, other times on the other. If I create a new profile I will get prompted the first time I open Outlook, but if I cancel without entering credentials, it will not prompt me the second time I open Outlook. Any ideas? Question about Exchange 2010 version
We're migrating to Exchange 2010 and I'm checking the version number on the server. When I run a powershell command [PS] C:Get-ExchangeServer | fl name, *version* I get the following: AdminDisplayVersion : Version 14.0 (Build 639.21) ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0) This isn't listed here on Microsoft : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/158530 and I can't find it anywhere else. RE: Question about Exchange 2010 version
You aren't running SP1. If you were then the version information would be similar to this: AdminDisplayVersion : Version 14.1 (Build 218.15) ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0) The version number of 14.0.639.21 is listed on the web page that you included. The other version information I believe is for legacy support. FW: Behind the Curtain of Second Tuesdays
Thanks to Susan Bradley for pointing this one out... this is worth watching (IMO). Even though it can be summarized in one sentence: ...but most people have little understanding of the massive amount of coordination and work it takes to release five new lines of code across 22 platforms in 36 languages. Perhaps, in a former life, I spent time as a bard telling stories of Robin Hood and Maid Marian as I travelled from town to town. Perhaps I just spent too much time playing The Bard's Tale on my Tandy 1000 back in the day. Either way, I enjoy telling stories to people. It's even better when I get to tell stories that relate to my job. Recently, I was given the opportunity to tell some stories at BlueHat V10http://www.microsoft.com/bluehat, and that presentation is now online for the world to see. One area of my job that always piques people's interest is the challenges we face on a day-to-day basis. These are the stories I chose to highlight in the Bluehat V10 presentationhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/ff967505.aspx, and unlike most old bard's tales, these stories actually happened. Of course, stories always have a greater impact when they make a point. In each of the case studies I talk about, something went wrong. And let's face it, if I'm involved, it means something has already gone wrong. That doesn't mean that someone was at fault, just that things did not go exactly as we expected. When I was originally approached about presenting something, I immediately thought of a few themes I wanted to highlight about what goes on in MSRC. First, few people understand the scope that we deal with every day. I may joke about rebooting countries (just watch the video of the presentationhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/gg469853.aspx), but it's really not much of a hyperbole to say that. The actions I take and decisions we make have far reaching consequences, so we take them seriously. I also hoped to highlight the number of moving parts we have in any given security update. In addition to all of the work I do, there are developers, testers, engineers, product groups, communications people, security gnomes, operations personnel, release partners, independent security researchers, and the list just keeps on going (sorry if I left you off). My job is to ensure all of these folks work together toward the common goal of addressing each issue and protecting our customers. I'm not asking for your sympathy here (though I'll gladly take it), but most people have little understanding of the massive amount of coordination and work it takes to release five new lines of code across 22 platforms in 36 languages. So how do we manage to make all of this happen the second Tuesday of every month? Well, there are 3 P's that exist here that really drive us to success: * Passion - Everyone I work with is very passionate about security and protecting customers. Let's face it, if we weren't passionate about this, we wouldn't last long in the sixth worst job in sciencehttp://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2007-06/worst-jobs-science-2007?page=4. And hey, we actually did buy a customer's laptop just to get repro (and that wasn't the first time). * Process - We've done this before. And each time we do it, we learn more and apply those lessons toward doing it better the next time. * Pragmatism - Although we might not get everything 100% perfect 100% of the time, we realize we can go back to those first two P's to cover us when something goes a bit askew. Release Tuesday is huge for us, but it's not the end of anything; just a major milestone. We actively monitor the ecosystem to make sure everything is behaving the way it should. Well, I hope you enjoy the presentation and the stories I tell in it. If nothing else, it provides a framework for understanding what's behind that little bundle of joy we deliver every second Tuesday. And if you happen to find me wandering in Skara Brae and would like to hear any more stories, we can head over to ye old tavern where I will spin a few yarns for you. I might even be the one buying. :-] Cheers! RE: SBS websites and activesync
You can't disable all the websites. There is only one website. I think you mean remove all the virtual directories. I think that would be a very bad plan. Regards, Michael B. Smith Consultant and Exchange MVP http://TheEssentialExchange.com From: Bill Songstad [mailto:bsongs...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 2010 3:10 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: SBS websites and activesync I'm side-working in a small shop where I've set up a SBS 2008 server for a client. They love the Exchange with Activesync for their smartphones, but they are nervous about all the websites running on the server. If I do as they ask and disable all the websites, including OWA, won't activesync go kaput? Or is the OWA just a method for configuring and installing Activesync and is not actually a required component of Activesync? Research shows that OWA is required to install and enable Activesync but apparently few people want to turn it off separately. I don't want tell them no until I actually know for certain that what they want is going to break what I tell them it will break. When attempting the unusual, I tend to turn to this group. I suppose I could just shut it down and test, but if someone out there knows and cares to share, it saves a disruption to somebody's workplace. RE: Simple Script Question
I'm actually not sure what you are trying to do. But the script isn't working because of two things. When you do this: Get-AcceptedDomain | select DomainName, you don't get a simple array back, you get an array of associative arrays back. That is, an array of hashtables. So you have to access each element of $AcceptedDomains as a hashtable. Secondly, PowerShell precedence is left to right. So, just fixing those minor errors provides you output: $AcceptedDomains = Get-AcceptedDomain | select DomainName foreach ($adomain in $AcceptedDomains) { Get-Mailbox | where {$_.PrimarySMTPAddress -like (* + $adomain.DomainName)} } But I don't know what that is supposed to be telling you... Try this. GPO for Outlook signature - with a twist
Morning All - HR has asked for a weird one, I think. They want a standardized Outlook signature for everyone, but - only when they choose to use a signature. SO, we want to force a pre-defined signature if and only if a user chooses to use a sig. No need to add a sig when you're emailing your spouse about the groceries to pick up on the way home, etc. Any suggestions? Is this possible without any extra software? Is there software that would enable such? Thanks for the time - Happy Holidays. --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe exchangelist

RE: SBS websites and activesync
With SBS, if you remove the web sites, then you are going to break most of the functionality of the product. The main selling point for SBS is its remote access functionality over the web site data. If you want to restrict it, then put an ISA/TMG server in front of it. That will allow SBS to work correctly, but allow you to control what is seen by the internet. What is the concern about that content being exposed to the internet? Or are we just talking about someone who doesn't understand how things like this work and simply want to restrict everything to make themselves feel better? (Rather blunt, but I can't think of any other way of saying it). When attempting the unusual, I tend to turn to this group. uhthat can get dangerous. is the server visible in aduc? or ad sitesservices? if so - you should use those utilities to delete the server first. if not, use a tool like adfind (not dsquery for this application) and search both defaultNC and configNC for any object having that cn=server-name. I was just running that. The autodiscover service passes. Outlook Anywhere fails with Attempting to ping RPC endpoint 6001 (Exchange Information Store) on server mail.wrightbg.com. The attempt to ping the endpoint failed. Interestingly enough, I've rebooted the soon to-be-dumped server and my 1 OA user can connect again. Of course, I'll need to resolve the issue for real before I can decommission the server. Steve Hart Network Administrator 503.491.4343 -Direct | 503.492.8160 - Fax From: Michael B. RE: add PF calendar to favourites in Outlook 2007
No, it's not possible. The Mail view shows mail folders only. To see calendars, click the Calendar button. RE: Outlook is prompting for credentials
You have to love intermittent issues. No one I asked to log in received a prompt. I finally found one, so here is the connection status. Server name Type Interface Conn Status Req/Fail Avg Resp Server.domain.comMail Local Area...TCP/IP Established 30/0 4 Server.domain.comMail HTTPS Connecting I'll continue to monitor this and see if this is consistent. I double checked IIS on both servers, and checked against the old decommissioned server. Haven't found any consistency issues yet. I did make a couple of setting changes in IIS for testing, but I didn't find anything that worked. _autodiscover just points to one server, so I'm thinking the connection should hit the same server every time, correct? Worst of all the issue is intermittent. User's only get prompted half the time. I use Outlook on two different machines and sometimes I am prompted on one of them, other times on the other. If I create a new profile I will get prompted the first time I open Outlook, but if I cancel without entering credentials, it will not prompt me the second time I open Outlook. Any ideas? Re: SBS websites and activesync
Thanks, Michael, Simon. Like you suppose Simon, its about making the client feel better. I just wanted to make sure I was correct in telling the client that disabling the sites would disable the things that they wanted. SBS is a strange beast, but when it is configured by someone who understands it, for use by someone who doesn't, it really is a good setup. Now to keep the owners from trying to change things not in the SBS Management Panel... -Bill On Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 10:52 AM, Simon Butler si...@sembee.co.uk wrote: With SBS, if you remove the web sites, then you are going to break most of the functionality of the product. The main selling point for SBS is its remote access functionality over the web site data. If you want to restrict it, then put an ISA/TMG server in front of it. That will allow SBS to work correctly, but allow you to control what is seen by the internet. What is the concern about that content being exposed to the internet? Or are we just talking about someone who doesn’t understand how things like this work and simply want to restrict everything to make themselves feel better? RE: GPO for Outlook signature - with a twist
How do they want it to be decided? Based on who the message is sent to or do they have to choose each time? If it's choosing each time the only non-3rd party way I can think of is to create two signatures. One being the standard, the other being one that looks like it is just blank. Then when sending a message they can right click on the signature and choose the blank one (if that's what they want). -Original Message- From: Russ Patterson [mailto:rus...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, 3 December 2010 2:47 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: GPO for Outlook signature - with a twist I've looked at Exclaimer before.
