RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-29 Thread Benjamin Zachary

Not sure if this is still the case or not, but when we had our bes server, I
could go into my BB browser and hit internal server shares. \\server\files
file:///\\server\files for example and I would be able to browse the
files and documents that were shared with everyone or domain users access.
This made it convenient for us to be able to get documents and things on the
fly instead of trying to get the emailed to us or making sure you sync'ed
and such.

I've started a new thread, because my manager is now asking me to create
a proposal document for our Director, in order to recommend the best
solution. I have a few specific questions that may or may not have been
covered in the last thread.

1) Does the BB, if I have BES installed in my server room, allow
sync of contacts/tasks/calendar etc. Also, just to be fair and
complete, does the WM device have this capability?

2) Does the BB have the same ability to open the same types of
attachments as the WM device?

3) Are there any other functionalities that one device has over the
other, from an end-user perspective, that would be something I need to
know about?

I'm sorry if the last question is a bit vague, but this is really my
first endeavor in these waters, and I'd just like to have as many real
world experiences as possible to draw from to make this decision. I do
understand that it's not difficult to support both, but I just need to
make sure the endusers are going to be satisfied with the chosen
solution.

RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-28 Thread Schwartz, Jim
Interesting discussion. The old Coke vs. Pepsi, Ford vs. Chevy question
for the techs.

We recently deployed BlackBerry and it been a major PITA for a number of
users. Bad provisioning by the carrier, bad devices, lack of knowledge.
My trouble calls for BB outnumber my normal calls 2 to 1 and I only have
700 BB users. (28,000 Exchange seats).

I think if you gave someone a device that has never before used a BB
then they would get the WM device faster. BB has far more features for
the power emailer, but not everyone is going to use those features. Same
with some of the advanced security features in BB. You do pay a premium
for that manageability and that is typically why the BB's only go to the
Executives, Sr. managers, sales weasels, 24/7 support folks etc.

Where BB blows away WM at the moment is manageability of the device. The
BB essentially becomes another managed node on my network that I can do
what I want with.

If you are interested in better management around WM I would suggest
that you take a look at Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manger
2008 (pauses to catch breath)

2007-12-28 Thread Joe Heaton
I definitely will. So, as I understand it, the recommended devices are:

WM – Treo 700wx

BB – Curve (if available), and 8830 if the Curve is not available.

I’ve spoken with my manager, and she agrees with me that we should pursue
getting one of each device, for me to trial, so I may end up walking around
with 3 phones on my belt soon…lol.

a proposal document for our Director, in order to recommend the best

I do
understand that it's not difficult to support both, but I just need to
make sure the endusers are going to be satisfied with the chosen
solution.

Thanks,

Joe Heaton

RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-28 Thread Kevin Miller
Security it like cloths. Some people think that dresses should be at the
ankles, the knees, or just below the panty line. All lengths work to cover up a
minimum required amount of skin, and you will get plenty of people who argue
the benefits of each length, and claim that another length is nuts.

Personally I am happy with SSL for OWA, and Windows Mobile and feel that is
more than enough. I am sure that others would tell me that I need a windows
VPN. Someone else might take it further and tell me that I need a Cisco VPN, or
take it another step further and tell me that I need smart card authentication
for my VPN.

Apparently our WM POC was setup by MS - who feels it is unnecessary and
that ISA is sufficient. (wasn't my choice or responsibility)

So you don't set you WM device to do the same? We do.

Yes. Lots internally and at times externally - through a reverse proxy
with 2 factor authentication or VPN.

1) yes, and notes as well as GAL lookup. WM generally yes but
can't say about tasks or notes and I personally prefer the BB's GAL
lookup - with a large GAL like ours, this is important.

2) Generally yes, but to be fair, MS office docs MAY be more
compatible on the WM devices just due to the same vendor.

3) Security - BES has server initiated outbound connection - WM
requires exposing your Exchange environment at least partially to the
internet. BB intranet web site access via BES without allowing direct
internet access is included.

2007-12-28 Thread gsweers
Definetly check out the new VX6800. I have a few friends who picked one
up and its hands down better than the 6700. I am very tempted to drop
my BB and go back to WM. Miss the touchscreen and HTML Email.

I will say that the email functionality of the BB is much better than
the WM.

I definitely will. So, as I understand it, the recommended devices are:

WM - Treo 700wx

BB - Curve (if available), and 8830 if the Curve is not available.

I've spoken with my manager, and she agrees with me that we should
pursue getting one of each device, for me to trial, so I may end up
walking around with 3 phones on my belt soon...lol.

Why must you say email is better on the BB?

My wife has the 6800, loves it. ( I wish I would have waited for it to come out

WM - Treo 700wx

BB - Curve (if available), and 8830 if the Curve is not available.

Why must you say email is better on the BB?

My wife has the 6800, loves it. ( I wish I would have waited for it to
come out and get it instead of my Samsung i780) My son got her old 6700, and
keeps trying to scheme ways to steal the 6800.

Definetly check out the new VX6800. I have a few friends who picked one

BB and go back to WM. Miss the touchscreen and HTML Email.

I will say that the email functionality of the BB is much better than the

I definitely will. So, as I understand it, the recommended devices are:

 WM – Treo 700wx

BB – Curve (if available), and 8830 if the Curve is not available.

I've spoken with my manager, and she agrees with me that we should pursue
getting one of each device, for me to trial, so I may end up walking around
with 3 phones on my belt soon…lol.

does the WM device have this capability?

 2) Does the BB have the same ability to open the same types of

 3) Are there any other functionalities that one device has over the
other, from an end-user perspective, that would be something I need to know
 about?

I'm sorry if the last question is a bit vague, but this is really my first
endeavor in these waters, and I'd just like to have as many real world
experiences as possible to draw from to make this decision. I do understand
that it's not difficult to support both, but I just need to make sure the
endusers are going to be satisfied with the chosen solution.

Ok not too pound on this topic anymore, but one thing that just barely gets
addressed between BB and WM is what Kevin said earlier.

WM is a computer, my 6800 does full IE (almost), has 6-8 applications I use
all the time, and is nearly a 2nd laptop for me.

BB is an email machine, there are apps available but few by comparison (though
google maps was a great addition)

I prefer WM because of the options, we run BES because some of our execs can
barely find the power button on their laptops. If we had all folks who were
tech savy and used email/calendaring/tasks/exchange to its fullest potential as
well as needed a simple laptop replacement for short trips and what not, there
would be no question. But we don't, and hence we support both J

Agreed - it depends on your needs. What we provide is a company owned,
managed device for wireless extension of the Exchange mailbox (which
includes mail, calendar, address book/GAL access, notes and tasks),
intranet web access and cell phone - if required, gps and telenav like
application. Our intent is not to replace ones personal cell phone/pda
with all their personal apps - this is a business device. As such,
BB/BES excels in our minds. YMMV

RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-28 Thread Schwartz, Jim
ATT and Verizon keep sending me phones to eval so I've used most of the
BB's and a bunch of the WM.

If I had to go BlackBerry I think I'd go with the Curve first and one of
the 88x0's second.

WM. BlackJack II (in hand now) is really nice. So is the Palm 750.

I'm not a huge fan of the slide out keyboards but the Tilt I have here
is nice as well as the 6800.

I'm waiting for them to send me the i760 so I can play with that for a
while. I'm interested to see if the front keyboard acts like the Pearl
for quick reply capabilities and then you can open the keyboard if you
need the qwerty.

I wouldn't buy another Q if you paid for it.

Definetly check out the new VX6800. I have a few friends who picked one

I will say that the email functionality of the BB is much better than

I definitely will. So, as I understand it, the recommended devices are:

WM - Treo 700wx

BB - Curve (if available), and 8830 if the Curve is not available.

I've spoken with my manager, and she agrees with me that we should
pursue getting one of each device, for me to trial, so I may end up
walking around with 3 phones on my belt soon...lol.

BB/BES excels in our minds. YMMV

gets addressed between BB and WM is what Kevin said earlier.

WM is a computer, my 6800 does full IE (almost), has 6-8 applications I
use all the time, and is nearly a 2nd laptop for me.

BB is an email machine, there are apps available but few by comparison
(though google maps was a great addition)

I prefer WM because of the options, we run BES because some of our execs
can barely find the power button on their laptops. If we had all folks
who were tech savy and used email/calendaring/tasks/exchange to its
fullest potential as well as needed a simple laptop replacement for
short trips and what not, there would be no question. But we don't, and
hence we support both :-)

Second that.

IME, the BB has the worst browser compatibility (WAP only with any
consistency). WM I would say comes in second (doesn't do WAP), and the Palm
has the most versatile browser that can handle WAP, HTML, and some script.

RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-27 Thread exchangelist
1. Yes, they both allow sync

2. Yes, but not in native office applications. Functionality is similar.

3. Yes, each application has it's plus and minuses, as well as fan boys.
That's like asking Chevy or dodge. I am a WM fan boy myself. My wife, 11 year
old son, and myself all have Windows Mobile devices with unlimited data
packages that sync to our home exchange server.

As a matter of timing someone asked me this weekend why I liked my WM phone.
This is my answer.

I've come to rely on my Windows Mobile device pretty heavily in the last few
years. It enables me to be a great deal more productive, have more information
with me, and have access to real time information from out there. The
following are a few of the things they my phone does for me.

1. It syncs with Exchange over the wire. My Contacts, My Calendar, My
Tasks, and My Email are with me and up-to-date when I need them. With direct
push they are kept up-to-date in real time between 6am and 6pm every day. Then
every 30 minutes outside of those hours.

2. I am big into putting my life in my tasks, and calendar to help remind
me of what I need to do, and make lists of things to accomplish for the day.
Having the same reminders and lists with me on my computers and my mobile and
synced between the two gives me greater options.

3. I have dates, spouses, pictures, addresses, phone numbers, personal
sound greetings and so on for all of my contacts. If I need to know something
about someone it is in my contacts. Even better, once it is on my phone it
uploads to my computer, or vice versa.

4. I use an application called EWallet [1] to store pretty much all of my
information: website logins, SSN, DL#, Medical Numbers, Insurance Information,
Bank Accounts, etc.. You name it data wise about me and my family, and it is
stored in this application. The app uses 256k encryption. Plus you need the
password for the device, then the password for the software to see anything. 6
digits for the phone and I use 12 digits for the software. It only syncs to my
laptop with a cable. It is secure enough for me to feel safe, and enables me to
have all of my data with me,

5. I have a few IMAP accounts on my phone to get email for work, and what
not.

6. I use an application called Live PVR that allows me to record all
incoming phone conversations from select people (Xwife). This application has
been helpfully when building court cases, or calling her on her later false
statements.

7. There are nice video games for my phone that let me zone out when I am
waiting for something

8. I run communicator mobile on my phone synced to MS or Work depending
on where and what I am doing . This gives me presence and instant
communications with the people I work with. It also allows me to make VoIP
calls when on a WIFI without great cell reception.

9. I run some SPB apps too, like the weather and time bars that let me
know what is going outside since I don't see it much.

10. Through the web browser I can quickly check the status of the ferries via
webcams. Via an application called SmartPhlow I can check live traffic data for
my routes. Between these 2 things I can select the best route to get to my kid
in real time. This has saved me all kinds of time over the last few years.

There are other things, but these are the big ones. In short I very much love
how much information and access I have in my pocket with a Windows Mobile
Device.

Subject: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

I've started a new thread, because my manager is now asking me to create a
proposal document for our Director, in order to recommend the best solution.
I have a few specific questions that may or may not have been covered in the
last thread.

1) Does the BB, if I have BES installed in my server room, allow sync of
contacts/tasks/calendar etc. Also, just to be fair and complete, does the WM
device have this capability?

2) Does the BB have the same ability to open the same types of attachments
as the WM device?

3) Are there any other functionalities that one device has over the other,
from an end-user perspective, that would be something I need to know about?

I'm sorry if the last question is a bit vague, but this is really my first
endeavor in these waters, and I'd just like to have as many real world
experiences as possible to draw from to make this decision. I do understand
that it's not difficult to support both, but I just need to make sure the
endusers are going to be satisfied with the chosen solution.

RE: EAS vs. BB - new thread for less confusion

2007-12-27 Thread exchangelist
1) yes, and notes as well as GAL lookup. WM generally yes but
can't say about tasks or notes and I personally prefer the BB's GAL
lookup - with a large GAL like ours, this is important.

2) Generally yes, but to be fair, MS office docs MAY be more
compatible on the WM devices just due to the same vendor.

3) Security - BES has server initiated outbound connection - WM
requires exposing your Exchange environment at least partially to the
internet. BB intranet web site access via BES without allowing direct
internet access is included.

I'd go with the most recent which would be the 8830.

The 7130 and Pearl are sure-type keyboards (multiple letters per key)
and not everyone likes them - have a look at http://www.blackberry.com
http://www.blackberry.com/ for full device feature comparisons.

If you have carrier choices, I'd also recommend a look at the Curve -
83xx series - very nice if its feature set fits.

1) Does the BB, if I have BES installed in my server room, allow
sync of contacts/tasks/calendar etc. Also, just to be fair and
complete, does the WM device have this capability?

2) Does the BB have the same ability to open the same types of
