RE: Outlook 2000 Contacts

2002-06-06 Thread Brien Mayer

TOOLS/SERVICES click the addressing tab
click add where it says When sending mail check names using these address list. Also
on this page are other settings you are going to want to set. I'm sure you can figure
it out. If you click add you don't see the contact list you are going to want to
right click on the contact list its self choose properties one of the tab will have
a box saying show in address list

In Outlook 2000 running on Windows 2000, when you click New (message) and
then click To:, it says that the file associated with this address book is
missing. All the contacts are in the contacts file. How do I re-associate
the contacts with the address book, or make the Contacts the addresss book?

Thanks

Outlook 2000 clients get an exception in OUTLOOK.EXE when opening. This
just started happening on O2K clients that use offline folders a couple
days ago. Believe it or not, we have 98 clients that are syncing just
fine (go figure). The server end is 2K server w/Exch 5.5 SP4.

Here's what we've tried:

New profile
New .ost

Has anyone run into this before??

Thanks in advance.

RE: Outlook 2000 security setup

We have Access automatically sending emails. Outlook with the enhanced
security does not allow MAPI email from a program without confirmation.
This is a problem with an unattended running of the db. Again, we can
override it successfully on our WIn2KPro clients, but not on our Win2K
server.

I am able to override the settings on a Win2K pro client, no problem. But,
whwn I try to do it on one of our Win2k servers for the administrator
user, it does not seem to get it. We have automated email coming off of a
server and now that we went to the newer mail client, we are dead. We
believe we followed the same procedure on the server that we sued on the
workstation.

I have Exchange 5.5 SP4 and NT Server 4.0 SP6a running with outlook

have the person's e-mail address show up and not their name for the
section labeled e-mail. The name is showing up because the person is in
our global address book. Is there a way to have the person's e-mail
address show up instead of their name? Any help would be appreciated.

with
Crystal Reports you look at each folder and get the sizes but it would be
a very large report. I have over 25 rules and about75 folders. The
minimum number of of folder for each person would be9 (10 in XP)and
most people additional folders. In addition you will not get info of
public folders people may have created. If you could explain what you are trying
to do we maybe more helpful???

It is
easier - as stated before - just to get total amount for each
mailbox.

I have
explained to the mangement here that it is not worth while in doing this
excercise and have finally persuaded then to just stick to the total size of
each mailbox.

I
think it was just a way of finding out as to what people really do with their
mail...ie. creating folders for Misc. and filling it with junk
mail.

Anyway, I have also mentioned to them we are in the process of evaluating
products such as Mail/WebMarshall and such like.

the auto-response only works when Support is logged in and the Support email
is open.

Any help with this would be and is greatly appreciated.

Clarifying what Martin said, when you make the rule up there is an
option to have the server reply using a specific message or template.
That will make it a server side rule.

Well, there is the problem.
Now, tell me why you need a client only rule for an auto responder. The rule

Subject: Outlook 2000 Auto Response

Hi All,

I have created a user called Support and a mailbox for that user on
Exchange. The person checking this inbox is a user named Marty. She has
permissions to the Support inbox and can view Support's inbox while her own
email is open. I want to set it up so the auto-response feature will happen
automatically (server-side) when a client emails Support even if the user
Support is not logged on since Support is not a real user. The problem is
the auto-response only works when Support is logged in and the Support email
is open.

Any help with this would be and is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Danielle Roper

Did you try to start Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch? If not in
the run window type outlook.exe /cleanreminders

That will fix a corrupted reminder.

Happy New Year to all!

I have 2 clients who just started having the following issues:

Client - Win2K SP2- Outlook 2000
Server- Win2K - Exchange 5.5 SP4

1. Outlook will hang within 15 minutes of launching, taking ~100% CPU Usage.
Rendering the machine unusable until the process is killed.

2. Outlook will hang immediately when launched and they try to access their
Calendar. Same hanging as above.

Could this be a corrupt Inbox or Calendar? How would I go about fixing it,
aside from re-creating their entire mailbox?

I have tried the Inbox repair tool, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

Help is greatly appreciated!

RE: Outlook 2000 Hanging

2002-01-07 Thread JENSEN, TIMOTHY C (AIT)

A suggestion to add to William's, is to not configure any Personal Folder
service in the newly created MAPI profile. Just try and get the user into
Exchange first. If it works then you know then problem lies with the .pst
or another service other than Exchange Server. My experience has been that
my lovely users think of Personal Folders as dumping grounds. Over time I
have had users with .pst files in excess of 1.5GB and it would take Outlook
30-45mins to come up and sometimes not at all.

I've also seen this when a reminder isn't working properly. You can try
/cleanreminders, but we had to isolate the item - it turned out to be a task
with a reminder set. In order to isolate it, we had to move the items to a
PST, then move them back to the mailbox a little at a time to see when the
hang happened again.

The issue happens from every machine they log into. OWA access is fine
though. We are running Outlook 2000 w/o any SR updates.

We are using InoculateIT 4.53 for AntiVirus on these machines.

Have you confirmed that you don't have any network issues with these 2
clients. Try from another machine to see if they can login into there
mailboxes try and isolate to the mailboxes or the PCS first. Are you
running any virus scanning software? What version of Outlook are you
running?

Happy New Year to all!

I have 2 clients who just started having the following issues:

Client - Win2K SP2- Outlook 2000
Server- Win2K - Exchange 5.5 SP4

1. Outlook will hang within 15 minutes of launching, taking ~100% CPU
Usage. Rendering the machine unusable until the process is killed.

2. Outlook will hang immediately when launched and they try to access
their Calendar. Same hanging as above.

Could this be a corrupt Inbox or Calendar? How would I go about fixing
it, aside from re-creating their entire mailbox?

I have tried the Inbox repair tool, but it wasn't what I was looking
for.

Help is greatly appreciated!

Free/Busy issue
Ok, I've looked and looked
and tried a few different things and can't seem to figure this one out. I
have a user that is having free/busy information issues. Basically, no
free/busy info is being shown for him beyond this year. On January 1, 2002 the meeting
request screen just shows the white hash marks instead of the free/busy
info. I've tried started Outlook with the /cleanfreebusy switch and
that didn't work. I've
recreated a new Outlook profile (different name) and it didn't work. I
double-checked to make sure his free/busy settings were still set for the
default of show 2 months worth and update every 15 minutes and it is. I
checked other users, such as our president and I see now end of his free/busy
info. Others have an end, but
it is a long time in the future. Another guy I checked ended on February
1, 2002.
Has anyone seen this
before? I found out when another user attempted to schedule a meeting for
2002 on his calendar. Thanks for any help.

At the site level, 'Everyone' has View Only Admin, but below that there
are only the normal service accounts.
On further investigation though, the problem is even worse. It would seem
that any user can view any other user's mailbox data, even mailboxes where
no delegate permissions have been set.
This is a MAJOR problem.

Thanks for your help,

I would look at the network protocols on this particular workstation.
Maybe reload TCP/IP. Maybe attempt to connect to the exchange server and
do a sniffing to see the communication between the workstation and the
exchange server.
Rodney Li
I have one workstation at a remote location along with 7 others. For some
reason on this one machine, Outlook can't find the exchange server. I
uninstalled and reinstalled Office, I can ping the exchange server both by
IP address and name. Using a host files, not WINS. I get the error
message that the Exchange Server is unavailable.

Any ideas on what to try? Exchange server is a NT 4.0 BDC.

 Thanks.

Subject: Outlook 2000 slow to open MAPI account with Exchange 2000

I have a new install of W2K/E2K and am having problems with the clients
(Outlook 2000) accessing the server. The first time that you create the
profile, it connects to the server quickly, but if you close Outlook and
go back into it, it takes a long time and periodically times out before
it finally goes in. It is not a netbios name resolution issue...they
have WINS running and nbtstat shows name resolution working fine. You
can open files shares up immediately, and ping replies right away. I
have a couple of other installs of W2K/E2K out there and haven't had any
problems, but I can't figure this one out...

BTW everything is service packed and up to date on patches.

Strange Problem - Have you tried this from several places on the network -
tried on a totally new user account and profile (with an empty mailbox) - I
would even try the client on the actual server and see if that is any
faster. Check logs on client and server for anything.
Otherwise I would be really interested to see what the issue ends up as. I
have had a similar problem with a faulty card on one of our switches and it
took me weeks to find. Good luck.

I am going to check on the DNS settings and play with that, but that would
be a new one to me that it would be required.

They are only going to use it for internal use and will not have an Internet
connection at least initially.

Neither the server or workstations are over-worked, the network is fine, and
shares open up immediately.

The weird thing is like I said...if I blow away the profile and re-create
it, the first connection is fast, but thereafter it is slow again.

Or your last point upgrade to Windows XP Server (when available) which will
allow you to change DC's and domain names.

First let me say thanks for the responses and the advice.

It turned out that when my co-worker did the install, he chose to name the
computer something like computer.xxx (and the xxx wasn't a .com or .org, it
was something like abc or whatever). DNS was running on the server and the
records were created what looked like successfully and the workstations were
using the server for DNS resolution...however, it wasn't happening correctly
for whatever reason. I didn't have an nslookup utility on the workstations
to check, but as soon as I put a HOSTS entry on the workstations for the
computer.xxx they worked just fine. I am not sure if the workstations were
having a problem querying for a non-standard FQDN, or if the server was
having problems answering for whatever reason, but the HOSTS file saved the
day...I am glad that there are only a few workstations to worry about.

Since you cannot change the name of the domain controller after the fact,
you guys may want to consider conventional naming when doing your installs.

Thanks,
Garrett

Ping to FQDN replies immediately?

Anything else between the workstations and server?

Are the clients of sufficient power? Is the server overburdened?
