Are there
two Kevin Miller’s on this list?
Do any of you (Kevin Miller’s) live/work in Florida?  I have an off-topic question if
so.  This may sound weird, but a
long time ago someone named Kevin Miller helped me with an Exchange issue and I
believe he said he was in the process of moving to Florida or just moved
there.  Anyway, I’m considering a
move so I wanted to chat to him.  Of
course, I could be losing my mind and it was someone else who lived in Florida…

How many channels do you need for phones at max usage?

Subject: Slightly OT: Connection

Hello,

We are currently connected via DSL that I just tested at 2.4Mbps Down
and 556Kbps up and we pay about $70 a month and we have a PRI for our
phones.

Well my AT&T rep is suggesting we convert the PRI to a IP Flex T1, our
concern is the download speed going from 2.4Mbps to 1.5Mbps and some of
that going to the phones.

Anyone have any good info regarding this, how our users will be
affected? We have about 30 users on this circuit.

Thank You

Your users will have become accustomed to the avilable bandwidth,
contracting it will be a big deal. IIRC, phones take 20Kbps/line when in
use...

>From what I am reading...
"IP Flex T1" - this is probably their term for SIP trunking.
What that means is you have 1.5M T1 circuit to use either for phone
calls or for internet.
If you use 20 lines for phone, that doesn't leave you with much left for
internet traffic.
How about getting (2) T1 circuits, have ATT bond them together, and this
would give you 1.5M for phone calls, 1.5M for internet?

Do you have any other DSL options? I don't buy his latency sales pitch.
If your IP flex T1 is pegged you are going to feel it more, IMHO. I
have 2 data T1 lines bonded for about 50 users plus Exchange and our web
sites. I pretty much have at least 1 of the T1s worth of bandwidth used
throughout the business day. We are about ready to switch over to 10MB

2009-11-20 Thread Jonathan Link
That's hooey. If you needed a lot of interaction latency might be
important. Or if you were used to satellite internet service it might be
important. While the difference in latency between DSL and his offering may
be measurable, it may not be noticeable to you or your users. The lack of
available bandwidth will be measurable AND noticeable.

This will give you the age of a message within 0 hours to xx Weeks. Then

One of our desks has a contracted response time of 1 hour for all email.
Management want outlook to display all mails older than one hour in a big
red font. Problem is, conditional formatting in O2K will only allow this for
Today, Last 7 Days etc. Does anyone know how to conditionally format either
all items received in the last hour, or all items over 1 hour old? Failing
this, can anyone think of an alternative way of notifying them after an
email passes it's contracted response time? I know this is per-user, but
that's not an issue for me - I only set it up, whether they get fed up and
turn it off isn't my problem.

TIA for any help!

Nice bit of coding!! I tweaked it a bit to add minutes and write !!OVERDUE!!
instead of hours, and that's close enough! Can't get it to conditionally
format, but at least it gives them at-a-glance view of what's outside it's
agreed time. They'd shrunk the 'received' field so they couldn't see the
time - you should've seen the looks on the agent's faces when I put it on in
front of the manager, and a whole lot of '!!OVERDUE!!' warnings appeared.
Classic:o) Thanks a lot Nikki, much appreciated!

Maybe a stupid question, but what do the contacts look like in Outlook?

Have seen that here with express and 5.0
Reactivation without wiping the dev causes it but we also saw it happen if the
user was not removed from the server. A combination of device wipe with
remove/re-add did the trick.

New BB Express server.
One high level exec using it just fine. No problems.
Second high level exec just wiped his BB.

RE: Slightly OT: Blackberry Issue

2010-05-11 Thread Brown, Larry
If BES Express treats the mailbox the same as BES does...then I have seen this
before. The only way we got it to stop was to delete the user account from BES
when we started from scratch, and selected the option to remove all BES traces
from the email account. The downside to this is, by default, BES will only
upload the last 14 days worth of email to a new set up. But...so far no one
has complained.

Subject: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

With our current setup when emails leave Exchange destined for the outside
world these emails are scanned and then delivered to the ISP.
We went through a process of giving certain staff an additional email address.
This is designed to be used to send secure emails via a secure link and these
emails get routed based on the recipients address.

If the recipients email address is @secure.domain.gov.uk the emails are send
down a secure pipe regardless of the senders address.
The software we have in place does this OK.

What we need to do now (as the guidelines have been altered) is:

1. Check the senders address. If this is a standard email address and the email
is being sent to a secure domain route the email to the ISP for delivery.
(email will contain non sensitive data)

2. If the email address is a secure address going to a secure address route
over the secure pipe(email will contain sensitive data)

3. Any others emails route to the ISP (general chitchat etc)

The current software routes all emails destined to a secure address regardless
of senders address and routes all other emails out the ISP

What I'm thinking, is modify the routes so all emails pass through regardless
and then land onto a separate box for routing.

Maybe open source, IIS app, etc

Any thoughts people ?

Cheers

John

RE: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

2010-09-30 Thread Ellis, John P.
The current solution is a cut down version of a the full blown appliance
and as such only has limited routing functions.
The chances of the getting the money to upgrade to the full appliance is
very slim, hence the need to seek other options

All routing is based solely on the destination domain.
What I can't do is do rules based on the From address and To address.

Any clearer?

Thanks

John

RE: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

2010-09-30 Thread Dave Wade
John,

We now send all mail to secure addresses to a mailsweeper box , which
then does source address based routing. We are still on a mixture of
Exchange 2003/2007 which also makes things interesting. I think if we
were pure 2010 you could set up transport rules, but we are not...

RE: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

2010-09-30 Thread Campbell, Rob
Unfortunately, you can't do sender based routing in Exchange 2007/2010. It
just isn't in there.

John,

We now send all mail to secure addresses to a mailsweeper box , which
then does source address based routing. We are still on a mixture of
Exchange 2003/2007 which also makes things interesting. I think if we
were pure 2010 you could set up transport rules, but we are not...

Today ALL MAIL to secure addresses goes via the secure pipe. In future,
e-mail from "insecure" addresses needs to go via the Public Internet.

RE: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

2010-09-30 Thread Michael B. Smith
I'm not aware of any way to do what you want, with built-in functionality.

You'd need either to write or to buy a transport agent that knows how to do
this.

All routing is based solely on the destination domain.
What I can't do is do rules based on the From address and To address.

Any clearer?

Cheers

John

I'm pretty sure Postfix can do that, with the right filters.

RE: Slightly OT: Mail Routing Software

2010-09-30 Thread Jason Gurtz
You mention open source...

If you or anyone there has a modicum of experience with Unixy mail
software such as Postfix, Exim, or Sendmail you can do it. I recommend to
do this since this kind of SMTP software is a much better Swiss-Army knife
for arbitrary mail routing and filtering and you will only very rarely
have to do any operational debugging once it is set up. You could
probably do this kind of simple functionality on an old Pentium III 512MB
server with more than enough performance to spare. Just have a mirrored
volume and dual power supplies and you can set it and forget it

I've been waiting a long time, but Exchange just doesn't have these
characteristics. It's sorta like how you can't have Outlook rules apply
to outgoing mail, apply rules to arbitrary headers, or heck (in the latest
version) even maintain header fidelity on replies and forwards. I guess
these kind of very basic things aren't a priority as your average
secretary or senior executive don't generally know to ask for these
features. Someday maybe I.T. will count as a customer too.

Rant done, sorry.

How were you finding the file sizes?

Subject: Slightly OT: Vipre for Email

Good morning all!

More an informational post than anything.

Was it just me that didn't know that the new MS Office documents (.xlsx, .docx,
etc) were compressed files?

Vipre for Exchange was trapping an 8mb .xlsx file even though the limit was set
to 50mb and saying that it was over the size when uncompressed. So...Sunbelt
Tech Support (which in my opinion rocks!) helped me to determine that the
actual file size was 54mbs..therefore being bounced.

Who'd a thunk it.

Cheers,

Changed the .xlsx extension to .zip and then unzipped it. Amazed me that an
8mb xlsx file went to 54mbs.

  Probably not just you. :)

The OpenOffice/Open Document Format (ODF) formats are the same thing, BTW.

I have 7-Zip add its Explorer context menu items, which include
"Open". 7-Zip will open a great many files which are actually

MSIs out of SETUP.EXE files.

The old .DOC, .XLS, etc., formats generally compressed very well,
too. It would have been nice if Microsoft had started doing this back
when disk space was more precious. :)

I'm confused. So you would bounce .zip files for being too large if/when
uncompressed? This seems to go against why people commonly compress email
attachments.

Yep.

Knew that.

My Maia Mailguard installation caused a similar problem long ago - it
was quarantining the files because the filetype was zip, even though
the file extension was" [doc|ppt|xls]x".

And I'm extremely unhappy about that, because now I've had to let the
filetype of zip through, which is just wrong...

Re: Slightly OT: Vipre for Email

2010-10-21 Thread Jeff Steward
Kinda funny that this came up yesterday and today as I'm working on parsing
XML data from a public database. My choices are using a poorly formated
text dump or an XML dump. The XML dump is 7 times the size of the text
output. If they had bothered to add delimiters to the text dump I would be
done by now, instead I'm dealing with learning more than I care too about
complex XML schemas and how to work with xml data in SQL 2005 ;-)

On the plus side I enjoy learning new things. The downside is that MSDN
articles almost always:

a) give examples that have nothing to do with what you are working on
b) leave out some critical piece of information in any example that does
pertain to what you are working on

That's about as friendly as generic message size limits that nearly
everyone seems to interpret as file size limits.
(MIME overhead and all being what it is)

Actually, this seems more egregious from a seat of the pants standpoint.
What is the actual description Vipre uses for this size limit feature?
Surely they should mean "message size" like everyone else and if they
really do mean "file size" then it should be the native file size. The
fact that the new formats happen to internally use zip compression should
matter. What happens to a rar or 7z file that is renamed with a .txt
extension?

You are not supposed to know about renaming .docx to .zip after all.
Well, for the purposes of this discussion anyway...

You need header fields defined.

Export from Contacts to see what the headers should look like.

Subject: Slightly OT. Creating Distribution list from Excel

Slightly OT but if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

I have a list of 1000 names and email address's in an Excel spread sheet.
I would like to import them all to a personal address book so as I can
easily create a distribution list.

I was using the Import / Export wizard but this fails with the message the
file to be imported has no named ranges. Use Excel to name the ranges.

Can anyone help me with this please?

We use Exchange 5.5 sp3
NT 4 sp6a
Outlook 2000
Excel 2000

Thank you in advance for any help.

RE: Slightly OT. Creating Distribution list from Excel

2001-10-23 Thread Boswell Tim

Make sure row 1 contains headers rather than data (Name, email address etc),
then drag across all cells containing anything you want to import (including
the header row), click Insert > Name > Define, and type a name.

RE: Slightly OT - Outlook 2011 Accessing Shared Sub Folder Calendars

How about going in the calendar properties, and add the OL2011 users with
specific permissions?

Subject: Slightly OT - Outlook 2011 Accessing Shared Sub Folder Calendars

Sorry for the OT post, but I've posted this to Technet and been searching all
morning for a solution.

We are a mixed Windows and Mac environment. I have a user who has created a
sub folder - calendar which she has shared. The people who are using Outlook
2010 on Windows can access the shared calendar just fine. Users running
Outlook 2011 on Macs cannot access the shared calendar. The sharing invitation
includes an xml attachment that Outlook 2011 cannot process Any suggestions
for getting access to this shared sub folder calendar would be appreciated.

Thanks!

2013-04-11 Thread Michael B. Smith
For better or worse, this is a known issue.

I'm not aware of any schedule for correction.

Move the calendar to the root calendar of a shared mailbox; is the approved
workaround.

Thanks for confirming this is a known issue. At least I don't have to
continue searching for a fix, just the work around!

RE: Slightly OT: Creating Explicit Credentials in PowerShell for WMI, Exchange, Lync, Remoting, etc.

2011-11-07 Thread Michael B. Smith
You are correct. And that's why there is a $host.UI.PromptForCredential
"requirement" in a PowerShell host.

However, as I know that YOU know, security must always be balanced against
usability. :-)

Exchange, Lync, Remoting, etc.

Just note that, AFAIK, the intended purpose of SecureString is to
avoid storing the entire password verbatim in memory where a malicious
program could discover it, and passing in a string argument means the
CLR might intern that string for a while... this is why SecureString
has no string constructor.

I know, I know, it's pretty tough to avoid reading a password as a
string unless you're prompting the user for char-by-char console
input... or maybe reading one char at a time from a crypto stream...
