Michael,
I own a Pioneer 6X model. I have no trouble getting full screen real time
framerate and there is no region specific hardware on board.
It runs all movies just fine, even double layer ones.

Likewise, I'm not able to get the wheel working on my Logitech FirstMouse
plus. The appropriate section from my XF86Config file is:

# **
# Pointer section
# **

Section "Pointer"
Protocol"MouseManPlusPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
Resolution 100
ZAxisMapping 4 5

# When using XQUEUE, comment out the above two lines, and uncomment
# the following line.

#Protocol "Xqueue"

# Baudrate and SampleRate are only for some Logitech mice

#BaudRate 9600
#SampleRate 150

# Emulate3Buttons is an option for 2-button Microsoft mice
# Emulate3Timeout is the timeout in milliseconds (default is 50ms)
#Emulate3Buttons
#Emulate3Timeout50

# ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice

#ChordMiddle

EndSection

All the documentation I have seen says thats all thats needed, but it
don't go. What else is missing?

PS at the risk of continuing an overlong saga, it worked under ver 6.0 -
is this another ver 7.0 "feature" (we've all agreed this is not a bug, so
what else could it be???)

That's correct. If you do an "ls -l" on /dev/cdrom, it SHOULD indicated that

Re: [expert] Configure your own JRE for Netscape?

2000-03-25 Thread Pj

Before you blame Netscape 100% consider my latest experiences, but first
a little background. Because M$ engineers fouled W98 to cause Netscape
browser users serious security issues, I chose to use Netscape 3.04. Odd
as it sounds I can see properly written Java, JS, and Frames without
difficulty, but I normally do not enable Java. Even with Java turned off
I do not have problems with pages written properly. I stress proper code
because..ever since the coming of Front Page and what looks to me like
odd and bloated code my browser crashes hard at every single site. Not
one or two sites but every single FP site. Often this happens before the
page loads and before I get a chance to look at the code. This naturally
makes me suspicious as to whether or not Linux-Netscape is victim to the
same problem? Don't forget who killed Dr.Dos and the IBM pc because he
was afraid of the *American Way*: COMPETITION!

find
[root of search] [option] regex [option]

So, to
find the file "httpd" do the following:

First,
if you like, try "which httpd". It might be in your path. If that doesn't do
anything, then try "find / -name httpd -print". That find command will search
the whole file system for that file.

First, you would be advised to lose the HTML when posting to mailing lists.
Second type "man locate" at the command line for information on using the

Here's the pointer section for my XF86Config, which works quite well
with my MS Intellimouse:

Section "Pointer"
Protocol"IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"

I usually load imwheel on boot, since so many programs don't listen for
buttons 4 and 5. Works reliably for me.

Nevermind. Here is the correct setup for a Microsoft Intellimouse:

XF86Config:

Section "Pointer"

Then drop 'imwheel &' or 'imwheel -k &' somewhere (kde autostart folder,

This sounds like a fix for something I have been wanting to do for a while.
At one point, I wanted to mount a couple of PC in my equipment rack with

[expert] Intellimouse

2000-03-25 Thread A.Sleep

Anyone got the Intellimouse to work correctly on 7 (v.2)?

I was using MetroX but had to drop it. MetroX picks up the IM perfectly.

Here is the pointer section of my XF86Config:

Section "Pointer"
Protocol"PS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"
Buttons 3
EndSection

No other options are activated. I tried intellimouse protocol but it
went nuts when I did that. I also tried 'picking up the slack' w/
imwheel. Still no good.

Any ideas?

RE: [expert] {EXPERT} Kppp/dial on demand

2000-03-25 Thread Russ Johnson

No you don't.

Read the PPP how-to for ppp 2.2 and 2.3.

I have the following options in my ppp configuration: demand idle 300

This causes ppp to auto-dial when needed and disconnect on idle time of 5
minutes.

Diald has not been needed for many months.

You'll still need to "start" pppd when your system starts, but it will
actually only dial the phone when a connection to the net is needed.

Re: [expert] multi-processor system support in Linux

2000-03-25 Thread Tim & Val Litwiller

do you have a bp6 motherboard? I also am only running on one processor because of
APIC problem when I run dual, Even with the NOAPIC in the append line in lilo I
still can not seem to get the machine to run reliably with a smp kernel. I have
tried making my own (mandrake sources) and mandrakes smp kernel. I guess I should
get a generic kernel source and all the patches and try making from scratch. I
know it worked better in 5.3 with a non-mandrake kernel but I haven't took the time
to try again since then.

[expert] mouse scrolling

2000-03-25 Thread Michael Holt

Hello,
I'm using a Logitech trackman marble with the scroll wheel in the
center and I just can't seem to get that thing working! I know that it
will work, but I just don't seem to understand the docs, maybe too much
coffee?!?

If there's anyone else using Mandrake 7.0-2 with this pointing device,
could you please walk me through the set up?

When I installed Mandrake, by default the generic PS/2 driver was
selected. I went to XF86Setup and deselected 'emulate 3 button mouse'
and I've also tried typing 'imwheel' in eterm but that doesn't seem to
work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can find the 'smp' kernel at there cooker site; I use these two:
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/contrib/RPMS

In fact I just downloaded there standard kernel 2.2.15-0.17mdk last night and I
saw the smp kernel right there.

[expert] Fax Viewing Program?

2000-03-25 Thread Lane Lester

Receiving and sending faxes is a big part of my life, but so far I only
need to receive them while I'm running Linux instead of Windows (software
that generates documents to fax only available in Windows).

I've got a good arrangement for receiving with mgetty to get them and
ledcontrol to let me know when they've arrived. But I really need something
better for viewing. I've been using kfax, but it only will load one page at
a time. I often get faxes as long as 10 pages long which I need to be able
to print. Is there a program that will display and print multi-page
receptions?

Ok, I'll take a look. I was just wondering if there was something
at the kernel level that I needed to be aware of.

Yup, I've got DeCSS. =) I made sure I grabbed that puppy when all the
sh*t hit the fan, so to speak. The DVD-ROM that I have didn't come with a
decoder board (it was a difference between $169 or $389 CAN for two
different drives, one with the board and one without), so I have to rely
on software decoding... I'll give DeCSS a shot.

Yuck! That's pretty annoying. Ok, so there's nothing I need to do at the
kernel level in order for this to work?

Re: [expert] accessing floppy and cdrom?

2000-03-25 Thread Vern

Thanks again Civileme for answering my messages,
I hope my mailer does better this time around. I have a
pretty generic setup hardware wise I believe. It's a six
month old Hewlett Packard Pavilion 6540C, Intel Celeron
466Mhz. All onboard junk video/audio/modem I junked
the modem in favor of a external USR model which worked
flawlessly in MDK 6.1 I need to read my floppy which has
the RPMS to drive my on board video (i810 based) it all
worked in the 6.1 version. I used the "recommended"
install, Lothar entered a bogus "scuzzy" device for an alternate
CD-ROM (two on the list). I can spin the floppy with a manual
mount command but nothing shows on the /mnt/floppy
directory? I'm still using VGA16 which won't let me see
all the options in the config GUI displays.
Thanks again for taking the time to mess with
all this "newbie" stuff!

2000-03-25 Thread Vern

Thanks Brian,
I'll give these a whirl before I reinstall
Mdk 6.1 it all worked "out of the box" in
6.1 and I'm more of a newbie and can't
deal with the "bleeding edge" thingy right
now in my learning days. I've got many
text on Linux and "supermount" nor the
CDROM issue is documented anywhere!
Thanks again!

dunno how it works, but I rather tell you: those are pretty old
(from last year! three months ago!). I wouldn't install them. Too much
development has evolved since. I rather try to download RedHat RPMS from
ftp://people.redhat.com/bero/RPMS/. I used to install them under mdk-6.1
and worked well. I hadn't tried under mdk-7, but I think they work. And if
you like it, check this url each 15 days. they put new rpms here.

good luck, and comment about result. I'm interested.

There's an "smp" (multi-processer) kernel right on the 7.0 distribution
disk, that you should have been able to select at install. (Per
civilme it should have been the automatic default.)

Are you sure it's not already running?

Hi,

Does it need qt2.1 ? if not, I'd stick with qt2, or more exactly
the mandrake qt2 and qt2-devel packages.

Here's how I got kVirc to compile using the qt2 and qt2-devel
rpm's from mandrake (on Mandrake 7.0), after previously encountering
similar problems as you did with licq:

- create a /usr/lib/qt2 directory

- put a Link *named* libqt.so there, which points to /usr/lib/libqt.so.2

- run the configure script with

   --with-qt-moc=/usr/bin/moc2

   --with-qt-library-dir=/usr/lib/qt2

No, they will not upgrade from the previous version.
further more trying to install kde2 while it is still

Re: [expert] Linux and DVD and Supermount

2000-03-25 Thread Wayne

Vince,
I have a Pioneer DVD and it hasn't caused any problems. For all intents and
purposes Linux will see it as a CDROM drive. Livid is about the only DVD
software available at the mo, mainly because of a court battle or some such
nonsense. SOmeone doesn't think DVD software should be free...
As for using Livid, I am not yet comfortable patching my kernel to use it, so
someone else had better answer this...
