2000-06-22 Thread James Sparenberg

Werner,
There could be a couple of reasons that you can't connect and they
aren't your fault. Since you can connect to the one site that indicates
that your set up correctly (however this could be a bad assumption on my
part I really doubt if it is.)
  1. Rush's site is so slow or overloaded at the time you are trying to
connect that it's just taking forever for RPlayer to get the data it needs
and it's timing out or freezing.
  2. The webmaster at rushes site made a typo on the page and as a result
it can't connect correctly.
  3. Since realplayer for linux is in a state of perpetual beta testing it
could be unable to connect due to some weird Windoze only feature the
webmaster has enacted.
  4. The people at Real.com are liberals and they have added software to
block Rush. :)

Hope this helps.

Actually, the pop3 server is in the IMAP package. You have two ways to
retrieve your mail. Imap lets you read your mail directly on the server
and store your messages there (you can create folders), while POP3 only
supports downloading.

So when you install the imap package, you get both.

They changed a bit, but it's really borderline. There is the crypto-export
issue, the Wasennar (sp?) agreement, and also some patent issues related
to RSA and IDEA.

You are not allowed to export 128-bit software from the US, but you can
export it to Canada only. If the software is open-source, and has most of
the code coming from another country than the US (openssl comes from
Australia originally, now Switzerland and Germany while openssh comes from
europe originally but now is in Canada), I think it should be safe to
export it.

I am not a lawyer, but this is what I understand from a lot of reading.

[expert] Network Questions to Ask?

2000-06-22 Thread Lane Lester

At the school where I teach, we are on a T1 and a Win NT server. I
have had Internet access in Linux before, so I know it can be done.
However, for some reason, I can't get it going with my new 7.1
installation. The install found my NIC automatically.

Part of my problem is that I am the only Linux user on campus. Even
the head computer guy only know Windows and Netware (our office LAN,
which is another Linux horror story... but another time). So I'm not
sure just what questions I need to ask the honcho to be sure that I
get the right answers.

I'm next to positive that I have my IP correct; it's not dynamically
assigned.

The mask is set correctly, as is the default gateway. However, there
was a question for which I don't have the answer: Gateway device? So,
during the install I left it blank. Is that my problem?

We have to DNS numbers, and I put the first one in the spot where it
was called for. I think that's OK.

But I'm not sure about my host name. I understand that it has three
elements, separated by periods, as in "a.b.c". Here's my thinking on
that:

a. Is this my username (on the school's system) or my computer's name?
b. The college's email address is "emmanuel-college.edu", so I guess
that b is "emmanuel-college" and...
c. ... is "edu".

things I double-clicked, it said I didn't have room for them! So I
gave up and let it dump everything on there.

So how do you unselect and select at the screen where each individual
program is listed?

>(regarding this subject). What's the difference
> between SMTP and POP3 servers? Is one dependent on the other? Can they both send
>and receive? Are some of the POP3 servers easier
> and quicker to setup?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) are
commonly
used protocols
for receiving and sending out emails.
In your /etc/services you find entries for both services and their standard ports

smtp25/tcp mail
ssmtp 465/tcp # SMTP over SSL
pop3110/tcp pop-3 # POP version 3
pop3110/udp pop-3

The whole stuff is a relatively complex matter that cannot be explained in 2 words. In
short: one sends email
with SMTP over the SMTP port 110 and gets them using POP3 over the POP3 port 25.
Before you start, you should read first some documents about this; for example

http://www.sendmail.org/
sendmail is THE mail server program

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Qmail-VMailMgr-Courier-imap-HOWTO.html
This document is about building a mail server that will support virtual domain
hosting
and provide
smtp, pop3 and imap services, using a powerful alternative to sendmail.

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ISP-Setup-RedHat.html
Outlines the setup of a single RedHat box for dial-ins,virtual web hosting,
virtual
email, POP3 and ftp servers

or take the classical sendmail book by Bryan Costales & Eric Allman (here you'll find
everything you need to know
... but you'll maybe got hammered by the mass of details)

Actually it depends on your taste, what server you run. Sendmail is the most powerful
but
live can also become
very difficult with it (I am the SysAdmin in our ISP and got gray hair on it :->) With
sendmail you can do
both smtp, pop3 and lots more ... we do nearly everything with it. For the easy
tasks you
don't need much
info and you are quickly done ... but the more you want to do with it the harder it'll
be.

A lot of people love qmail because they say its easier to handle. But it is less
powerful
(though most services
you'll never use) and it has some strange license agreement: you cannot distribute a
changed
version of it -- you
can only provide patches. But even big providers use qmail.

But with Mandrake you have also postfix ... and maybe you try it out.

Best,

Daniel.

smtp is simple mail transport protocol.

pop3 is post office protocol (3?)

pop3 picks up mail delivered to a machine.

smtp delivers mail to and from a machine.

Hi Seve,

I'm no expert on this subject, but I can cover the basics. You will probably
want to run both. SMTP is a protocol for transferring mail from machine to
machine as it is routed from source to destination (very loose definition).
It is not geared towards interaction with peoples mail readers. POP3 is a
protocol designed to interact with the user's mail reader. However, it does
not allow you to send mail, only to receive. So the short answer is, you use
SMTP for sending mail (the email clients can handle that), and POP3 for
receiving it (or IMAP if you want to).

Good luck

Tony

Hello everybod...

I'm trying to understand how does the linux kernel works, but it's so
confusing... I don't know where to start... Can anybody sugest me a good
file to start with? Maybe include/linux/ctype.h?

**I kow it's a hard job to do --and I'm not a very good C coder--, but I
would like to improve my skills learning from the masters :-) **

Please, forgive my naiveness... And help me, if you can.

P.S. I've found a site that let you navigate trough the kernel code,
including links for each function, declaration, etc. It's somewhere at
metalab.unc.edu, but now I can't say for shure where. When I get back home,
I'll put the link.

Using DrakBoot did not work since it never gives you an option to use
lilo or grub. So instead it just updated lilo.conf (I saw date change)
and rebooting goes into lilo mode.

So combining all the answers, I went into /boot/grub and edited
menu.lst to add the proper memory setting. Tried running ./install.sh
but it did not work because of permissions. chmod700 the file
(don't want users touching it), and ran it just fine. I tried
running /usr/sbin/grub but it seemed to only go into a menu mode.
Quit out of there, and rebooted... everything is good again.

Thanks... Dan.

hi !

the difference is simple :
pop3 is the server that you use to get your mail (port 110)
smtp is the one that you are sending mail with(port 25)

in order to have a full factional mail server , you need to install both... :-)

[expert] Tulip Driver on LM 7.1

I saw the discussion awhile back about the tulip drivers (specifically the

this. I am currently trying to get the tulip driver to compile on LM7.1
however it is coming up with many errors. If anyone could shed some light

Umm...POP3 is for DOWNLOADING/receiving your mail and SMTP is for
SENDING your mail. Two toally different things. You *must* have both.
Now, one machine can do both jobs.

There's a little more to it than just the pentium optimization. For
example, any GUI apps can include (should include) a menu entry as
well, for Mandrake's new menu system. Then of course you are
building against Mandrake libraries which may contain other
enhancements not found in, say, RedHat libraries. There are quite a
few things, actually. Although Mandrake boasts 99.5% compatability
with RedHat (and it is really close) there are some other
Mandrake-specific things that, although they would be ignored on any
other system (ie. the menu system stuff), really enhances the mdk
RPMs when installed on an mdk system.

Didn't the rules on exporting crypto change recently? Enough that now,
unless you're one of the so-called "Terrorist countries" you're allowed to

that sounds not good ... do you have in you ~/.gnome directory a file named
"Background"? mine looks like

color2=#42528f

simple=gradient
gradient=vertical

this should load the desired background

[expert] Mail Server - Very Interested In Setting Up, But....

I'm looking at setting up a mail server but I'm a bit confused about a few things

receive? Are some of the POP3 servers easier

[expert] How to trace IP packets...

2000-06-22 Thread Tony Smith

I've got an interesting problem which is a little bit beyond me, and maybe
one of you can give me a few hints.

We use a wireless ISP to connect to the internet, and they way it seems to
work is that the wireless device they supply behaves pretty much like a
repeater and all packets that it sees from either side are just repeated on
the other. So far, so good, but I was watching my external interface today
with tcpdump, and I noticed a lot of activity from an IP address 10.1.9.1
which is one of the addresses in the class A reserved network, so it really
shouldn't be out in the wild.

I only see packets like this:

13:23:42.327176 arp who-has 10.1.9.70 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:42.328039 arp who-has 10.1.9.71 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:42.329121 arp who-has 10.1.9.72 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:42.330081 arp who-has 10.1.9.73 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.315266 arp who-has 10.1.9.134 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.317814 arp who-has 10.1.9.135 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.321283 arp who-has 10.1.9.136 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.322147 arp who-has 10.1.9.137 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.328441 arp who-has 10.1.9.138 tell 10.1.9.1
13:23:43.426728 arp who-has 10.1.9.74 tell 10.1.9.1

I never see any replies, so I guess they are going via an internal-only
connection. In my own network we are using the class C reserved subnet so I
know this has nothing to do with us. I think it's another customer of the
ISP with a config error.

So here are my questions:

1. How can I track them down and tell advise them of their problem? I've
already sent a mail to the ISP, but given their normal lack of action, I
don't expect a response.

2. Any ideas as to what kind of config error could cause this? Routing
table? IP forwarding?

All help gratefully received.

Tony

Since the first command is not found you get an error message after
executing "useradd".

Then the shell parses the second command "bdklar".

Somewhere you have a program with this name!

useradd is part of the shadow-utilities, which you probably did not install
during the initial setup.
