Thanks, Larry!

I did an upgrade from MD 7.2 to MD 8.0 with the kernel that ships with MD
8.0. And you are right: I forgot to do make clear and make dep, which I
will do this evening (just sitting in my office in front of a Windows
machine...).

And I will try your hint with etc/ispnp. (As far as I remember I habe in
/etc/modules.conf only an entry for my old als100-module. But I will check
this again when I am back home.)

The syntax is almost identical. But iptables can do a many more things.
I don't know the document in the link. I used the Packet-Filtering and NAT HOWTO
from netfilter.filewatcher.org

The are very good. And if you are familiar they have a little summary
concerining the changes between ipchains and iptables.

If gooey config still doesn't work, look in /etc/sysconfig/network.
It should have the line "GATEWAYDEV=eth0".
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 will also be useful.
And "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start" is vital!!!
I'm sure I'm forgetting a file or 2. My eth0 and Cox@Home have
been working for so long, I forget what I did. :-\

Re: [expert] Cable modem

2001-08-30 Thread David Rankin

Guy,

I think your still a bit confused about what civileme was saying. From my
recollection of your original post, you initially had your system configured
to use your modem to access the internet. (or that is the way the install
configured your system) You now have an ethernet card and a serial modem
installed in your system. You want to use the ethernet card and your cable
modem to access the internet and you want the serial modem to "shut up" and
let you do it. The problem is that your network configuration still thinks
your serial modem is the default route to the internet and has no idea what to
do with your ethernet card or cable modem.

To solve the problem, follow the steps that civileme suggested. What he is
having you do is reconfigure your network configuration so that your ethernet
card (eth0) is the default route to the internet instead of your USR modem.
The configuration that needs to be done has nothing to do with your USR modem
being on or off. You basically just have to configure your box to look to your
network card for the internet connection instead of looking to the USR modem
for the connection.

I haven't played with LM8.0, basically because 7.2 works flawlessly for
me. If they still have linuxconf in 8.0, give that a try to configure your
ethernet card.

Shouldn't your hostname be something like

( # being a number )

This seems to tell me that Mandrake isn't seeing my NIC (or so I think).
Can anyone tell me what the problem MIGHT be?

What is is saying is that your NIC is not the internet connection.

In order to have more than one internet connection, you need to use
DrakProfile to set up
multiple profiles.

If you during install set up the NIC first than added a normal modem (not a
cable modem), this
would be exactly what would happen. The NIC would be assumed to be a local
netwiork connection
and the modem the internet connection.

To do this properluy, remove ALL interfaces then put just the NIC back and
let that be yuour
internet gateway. Draknet was set up this way because many customers use a
Mandrake system as a
gateway to the internet for other local machines--sharing an internet
connection.

The easiest way is to reinstall in this case, and make sure you talk to
Draknet in its interface window
during install and install ONLY local network.

The current Beta has a Draknet that removes manyu of the restrictions of 8.0
including the one you speak of.

Try removing all cups packages from your system with rpm -e, then reinstall
1.1.10. I have heard of the remove/reinstall fix being successful, but I have
never heard a concise answer as to why it works.

[expert] Upgradeing KDE to 2.2 problems

2001-08-30 Thread lhon

Dear Stephen,

I suggest you upgrade to 2.1.x kde version. That is easier to handle.
>From release 7.0, I never upgrade gnome or kde success.

Too many dependencies problems together with other packages (software)
problems.

Just because mandrake does not provide their own kde new versions(I cannot
find in their web site, see if any tricky), like SuSE, Slackware, (redhat
sometime
provide but just install kde new version download from kde ftp site 99% work
but the download version from kde ftp site broken the gnome in Redhat 7.1),
so suggest not upgrade if not a advanced user of Linux or Mandrake.
If you buy Mandrake package, summit the serial number and get Mandrake is a
better way. Also some software need newer rpm version to install, take care.
Don't try to upgrade other software from Mandrake cooker but you can download
Mandrake Cooker iso to burn a cd then just install the cooker version, it is
work
and contain many new version software, kernel, ...etc.

Until now (over one year) I cannot find any document outline about new version
of
kde installation problems in Mandrake (gnome too).

But other then upgrade new software, Mandrake is the nicest Linux for common
user.
Easy install and use.

But just the administration of the system is not quite good.
The new beta version 8.1 contain many gui interface to configure the system,
But I
want to point out that gui user interface contain many weak points in doing
things in a
operating system, many mature Unix version also have many problems in gui user
interface.
But rare people like command line. So mac and pc attract people, this is a
rule.
Every people from the beginning in the world govern by this rule. The
definition of the rule
is : Every people in the world like easy, pretty and usable things BUT does
not like to give
time to work hard and Thinking, this doesn't mean people are lazy. Every
people in the world
from the beginning is that. But if a software/hardware or other products (TV,
mobile phone,
...) need too much time to learn to use, need to think too much time to use
every time, who buy
it ? Much people say balance, but until now no one success for a few hundred
of years.

Each Linux(Unix) version contain strong points and weak points.

I personally like Mandrake, SuSE, Slackware, Redhat, Debian, ...etc and
FreeBSDs.
Also some other distribution (you can find many in www.linux.org, lwn.net,
...) are
very good choose.

Umm...vi /usr/bin/logcheck.sh

change line 42 to SYSDADMIN=alert
:wq

assuming that mail defaults to service.mydomain and that alert is a real
acount., otherwise put an entry into /etc/aliases to redirect to a real
account

That changes the "To" header, which you can use with a filter on your
favorite mail proggy...The script is actually getting run as part of a root
process so the only way I can think of changing the From header is:-
create an account called alert
give the user alert full access to /etc/logcheck and /var/log/
log into the account and set up a cron job to run logcheck.sh
use an alias to redirect the mail to your normal account

seems like overkill to me

I have come into this late, so I may be going over old news, but the
last line looks odd. If you are on Rogers Wave, your hostname should
look something like:
cr12345-a.pr1.on.wave.home.com
cd12345-a
is your individual computer name assigned by Rogers and
pr1.on.wave.home.com
is the subnet of Rogers network that you live on. DHCP will not work
with Rogers unless the DHCP server recognizes you machine name. It just
will not hand out an IP address. You might want to run draknet again and
put in the whole name in the third or forth screen.

BTW; I pinged 24.102.7.207 at about 16:04 EST Aug 30 /01 (20:04 UCT) and
you modem was not answering. If you would have expected it to be live at
4:00 pm that might be your problem.

Hope this helps. John T

First off, read the security advisory... you're not really supposed to
use MU for this. =)

Second, boot from your rescue floppy/install CD and mount your root
fs. You can take the 2.4.3-20mdk from the original 8.0 install and
re-install it (use rpm -ivh) so it's alongside the other kernel. Then
edit /etc/lilo.conf to include it (it should already be in there, but
just check to make sure). This should allow you to boot normally into
your system.

At that point, I'd remove the update kernel and re-install it (also
upgrade the header/sources/etc. with it). Make sure you "rpm -ivh" it
so it doesn't remove your old kernel. Then you can try booting from
it to make sure it works.

I don't know *why* it doesn't work, however. If you can provide more
details, that would be ideal.

Re: [expert] What's with this?

2001-08-30 Thread Praedor Tempus

Hi,

I applied a diff file to the tarball. I then bziped this tarball back into
the originally-named xpdf-0.92.tar.bz2. Running the rpm -bb command, it
properly un-bzips and untars the xpdf file and creates an xpdf-0.92 source
directory in the /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES directory. It just wont do anything
else.

I cd'd into this xpdf directory and tried manually doing a ./configure and it
works fine. I can't do this though because there are patches with the src
that aren't applied yet (and reading the man page on patch has never made
sense to me since whenever I have EVER followed the instructions in the
manpage for patch, it INVARIABLY fails to do anything but err out).

So, I am willing to do a manual build since it appears that rpm is retarded.
I just don't know how to do the patches since the manpage for patch is itself
retarded and doesn't work as written.

Any pointers on how to patch? I have tried unbziping and untarring the patch
file, leaving them as tar.bz2 files...all to no avail. Manually running
patch as per the manpage fails.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the source binary goes in
/usr/src/RPM/SOURCES, the spec file then uncompresses this into either
/tmp or /var/tmp as well as /usr/src/RPM/BUILD (maybe only one really gets
created). Then it builds the package in that temp directory, installs it
to a mini-tree, then packages the installed files. If you did not put the
.tar.bz2 or .tar.gz file into the SOURCES directory then it won't be able
to decompress these and make the proper tree. Also if you modified the
tar files layout so that it doesn't properly decompress into xpdf-0.92
anymore but into something else, you will run into a problem.

Can anyone tell me what the problem MIGHT be?

What is is saying is that your NIC is not the internet connection.

In order to have more than one internet connection, you need to use DrakProfile to set
up
multiple profiles.

If you during install set up the NIC first than added a normal modem (not a cable
modem), this
would be exactly what would happen. The NIC would be assumed to be a local netwiork
connection
and the modem the internet connection.

To do this properluy, remove ALL interfaces then put just the NIC back and let that be
yuour
internet gateway. Draknet was set up this way because many customers use a Mandrake
system as a
gateway to the internet for other local machines--sharing an internet connection.

The easiest way is to reinstall in this case, and make sure you talk to Draknet in its
interface window
during install and install ONLY local network.

The current Beta has a Draknet that removes manyu of the restrictions of 8.0 including
the one you speak of.

Re: [expert] Cable modem

2001-08-30 Thread Anthony Moulen

You probably need to give us a little more information. Like what type of
network card is this that you are having problems with? Is this an
external cable modem or one that is internal and needs its own driver
(this is very uncommon). And for sound, what type of sound card is it? It
is fairly likely that you just need to get a few modules configured to
come up during boot time. The easy, cheating way, to do this is to simply
add the module to the end of the /etc/modules file. But that doesn't
solve some problems that you may have, and it doesn't deal with the
options you may need to set. So it is best to work with this in
conjunction with your /etc/modules.conf file.

If Mandrake can't see your ethernet card, then it can't be configured. So
you need to first resolve the fact that Mandrake can't see the card. If
it is a PCI card you can usually find information on the card by typing
lspci, and reviewing the output. However, to get the card working you
will need to examine your installed modules with lsmod. Then you can
install modules that are missing to make the card work. Once you figure
out what had to be done to make the card work you can configure this
information into your modules.conf file and modules file. The hardware
tools in the Mandrake control panel should be helpful.

M8.0, and it hasn't worked since. I suppose I can do without the sound
card, but I can't do without the modem. So if anyone can help me, I'd
appreciate it. If no one replies, then I'll have no choice but to take
Linux off my computer. And I like it very much.

Now, here seems to be the problem with my modem. When I typed 'draknet'

sorry i didnt understand the initial post very well.

/usr/bin/logcheck.sh is just a shell script and can be
modified to use 'sendmail' instead of 'mail' as the
default program used to send the alerts.

sendmail can force change the "from" part from command
line:

sendmail -f alert@yourdomain message

i dont know if the program 'mail' can do that.

find the file /etc/aliases or /etc/mail/aliases or the
equivalent on your system. make root mails forward to
that account:

root: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

dont forget to run 'newaliases'.

one other way to do that is put a .forward file on the

'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'

hope that helps.

I know how easy it is. I just installed it a week ago on a Red Hat 7.1
system. I just thought it would make a nice feather in Mandrake's cap
(can that light blue top hat be referred to as a cap?) if they included
an e-commerce package ready to go out of the box. They could even
include both AllCommerce and Interchange. (We've already filled 2
CD's. Let's get #3 started right!)

Re: [expert] Problem with soundcard Avance Logic Gold ALS120

2001-08-30 Thread Larry Sword

You haven't stated if you did a fresh install of LM 8.0 or an upgrade or
which kernel you are using. I may be incorrect in this but I believe
that if you are using the 2.4.x kernel you do not need the /etc/ispnp
config in your system. You might try renaming this /etc/isapnp file and
then reboot the system to see if the sound card and modules are then
correctly loaded. Also double check the items in your /etc/modules.conf
file and do a depmod -ae prior to rebooting.

Quite true, but I would suggest migrating now if possible, as everything I've

yeah, thats what i thought initially when i enabled
IPchains support on the kernel. there is nothing on
the Documentations of the kernel that i should already
go for iptables so i stick it out with ipchains so
that i dont need to do much on that server.

my mdk 8 has ipchains and iptables working smoothly. i
can switch to ipchains or iptables mode.

has any of you done upgrade from 2.2.x to 2.4 and got
ipchains working?

please help. thanks.

ipchains has been deprecated in 2.4, and you will need to migrate to
iptables instead. I don't know if there is a workaround to make ipchains
work on 2.4 or not.

hi list

i have an mandrake 7.2 machine that previously have
2.2.x kernel. i have upgraded the kernel to 2.4.9
lately. everything seemed to work fine except for
ipchains. when i execute ipchains commands, i get this
error message:

ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel

im pretty sure i have enabled ipchains (ipfilter, etc)
as module on my kernel but when i try to load it, i
get this error:

modprobe: Can't locate module ipchains

i checked on /lib/modules/2.4.9 and i really cant find
ipchains.o =(. i did upgrade my modutils, and i did
'make modules' and 'make modules_install'.

is there something else im missing? hope someone can
help me out.

I had the exact opposite effect. I went from a 2.4.3 kernel, X 4.0.? and
KDE 2.1 to a 2.4.9 kernel, X is 4.1 and KDE 2.2, not whe whole system

[expert] Strange Login Issue

2001-08-30 Thread David Paik

What
could be causing this?
I boot
up, login, startx.
Try to
open a console window (Which usually goes very fast, a second or two) and it
opens, shows a cursor and then sits for 30 seconds to a minute then gives me a
command prompt. Works fine after this point.
If I
exit KDE, logout of the machine and try to log back in... it takes my
password... sits for about 1 minute or so and then returns me to the login
prompt not allowing me to login as ANY user.

I have
never seen this before. The machine was working fine... no errors on bootup or
anything. Nothing was upgraded or changed on the machine before it stopped
working.

I also
noticed if I try to do a iptables -L it hangs at the INPUT rules and I have to
do a Control-c to get control again. If I do a iptables -F I am then able to do
a iptables -L. If I add ANY input rules by hand or run the tiny firewall
config I get the problem back.

Any
ideas?

I am
using LM8.0 This machine was running perfect...

Re: [expert] RTL8139too

hi,

i got a RTL8139 working a few weeks ago, also with a pcmcia-wireless card,
its a kind of router now. im not sure but i think i had some irq-probs too.
i solved it with the bios settings. i set in the bios NO-Irq-sharing for a
special slot and it worked. you have to try to put your cards in different
slots maybe. its not possible on all motherboards to set irqs in all slots.
its also possible with some modules to change the irq and the base adress,
maybe you have to change the irq-setting on the card to (jumpers?). i have
no access to the box where i installed the RTL8139, but when im there i
will take a look at it.

[expert] Upgradeing KDE to 2.2

2001-08-30 Thread Stephen Kitchener

Hi,

I hope someone can help me please.

I would like to upgrade my KDE but I am having a lot of difficulties
upgrading to KDE 2.2 from KDE 2.0.1 on MDK7.2, (Fully patched).

There are two things that are causing me difficulties, Sorting out the
dependencies (where do I stop getting more and more RPM's) and what
version of XFree should I be using to complete the upgrade.

The Dependencies and where do I stop. The amount of RPM's that rpm -Uvh
--test *.rpm suggest, eventually end up saying that I need to upgrade
glibc, This is not a good move, so where do I stop and ignore the
dependencies required to upgrade KDE and use --nodeps or even -force ?

Xfree, is this relevant, do I need to be running a 4.x.x series of XFree
or will the version 3 that comes with MDK7.2 be sufficient?

Any help appriciated.

[expert] Problem with soundcard Avance Logic Gold ALS120

2001-08-30 Thread Uwe Jochum

Although the problems of the Avance Logic soundcards have been repeatedly
discussed and long howto-texts are available, I need some help for the
following problem.

I switched from MD 7.2 to MD 8.0 In MD 7.2 I used the alsa-package to bring
sound into my system by integrating the als100-module (witch works also for
als120) into my kernel. Then I could use alsamixer and alsaplayer to listen
to CDs and wav-files. The CD-player in the multimedia submenue didn't work.

After switching to MD 8.0 and the new kernel there is an error message
during booting: "coundn't fetch soundmodule als100". After that the
ISA-PNP-soundmodule is correctly loaded. After booting I can use the
CD-player in the multimedia-submenue, while, of course, alsaplayer doesn't
work, since I haven't installed the alsa-package on my new system yet. But
what strikes me is that all other multimedia-devices don't work either:
they all hang when I am trying to start them --exept for the CD-player.

I think I have two options:

a. Integrate the alsapackage into the new kernel. But I am not sure if the
CD-player will work then, and after all I prefer the CD-player and not the
alsaplayer.

b. Delete the old alsaplayer-settings from the /etc/modules.config-file.
But when I do that, there is absolutely NO SOUND available on the system,
even the CD-Player doesn't work.

So which way would be best to come to a working system with good sound
integration?

Any hint very welcome!

Best,

Uwe
