Re: [expert] spaces and command line

2001-09-16 Thread ddcharles

Hi,

when you cd to a directory that has spaces in its name, you have to escape
the spaces with a back slash, e.g.:

[/]$ cd dir\ name\ with\ spaces\ in\ name
[/dir name with spaces in name]$

as for scrolling up, try SHIFT+PGUP.

[expert] oki4daemon problem with LM8.1b3

2001-09-16 Thread Bjarne Thomsen

I have encountered a problem with the daemon for
an Okipage_4w printer.
The oki4daemon (perl script) dies when I try to print
a test page; but the user space driver works fine:
oki4drv file.ps -o /dev/lp0

Any ideas?

RE: [expert] samba printing

2001-09-16 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

Ok, to append that last message, I've narrowed it down to Microsoft
photo editor that comes with office. I was able to print with the gimp
(a windows port) and I was able to print a project from publisher. It
seems like I'm going to have to go through and find out which programs
can and can't print to samba. I would still like some insight as to why
this is if anyone feels qualified to take a stab at an explanation?

Backquote them.

For example

cd A\ directory\ with\ spaces

Don't forget you can always uses filename completion by typing part of the
name and hitting tab.

As for scrolling back up console screens, you can use SHIFT-ARROW-UP or
PAGE-UP

I've got a couple of newbie questions that I've just never really
bothered asking before but it's always bothered me, so here goes.
1st,
I've noticed that bash doesn't seem to handle spaces in directory or
file names very well. When I look at my windows partitions from
linux,
I can see the complete file names, but when I try to 'cd' to a
certain
directory, bash doesn't seem to deal to well with the spaces. I've
found that I can just use an asterisk in place of the spaces, but is
there another way?

2nd, if I'm at the command line, no X server involved, is there a
way to
'scroll' up to see what stout was previously on the screen? Say I
do
'ls' and then do some other stuff and lose that information, is
there
anyway to retrieve that screen or is it just printed once and lost?

Anyone interested in saving keystrokes can save a whole lot more by
typing these first thing upon login:

mc

Once you do that, you find the dir you think you want to remove and hit
enter. Now you can see whether what's in there is what you really do
want to rm. Hit enter again, then F8, confirm, and it's gone.

[expert] postcript and text printing

2001-09-16 Thread Andreas Müller

Hallo,

I've finelly managed to make my printer work. But it still does not produce
desired results.
I'm using cups with a 24dot matrix printer.
It prints the postscript printer test page all fine, BUT hwne printing e.g.
from StarOffice I get garbage. The same from Netscape or from Kmail. I
assume, that StarOffice and other applications do not produce postscript
files and that this is the reason for the garbage. Can someone plz help me
here? How to make all applications print with the same quality as the
postscript testpage?

I made all apps use qtcups or xpp...but hte same probs.
I cannot print pdf files at all. gv says thet it cannot find a temp file it
creates and the pdf viewer from KDE sends something into the que, but this
gets deleted.

Any ideas?

Thanx in advance

Andreas

Ive often found that after install, i need to set up the printer again as it
moves to the one in the list after the one i originally chose. It should then
work fine. (i used drakconf to reset).

[expert] irq conflict

Ok, ive got a mean IRQ conflict on my flatmates machine. We had the same
problem under winblows that meant he could no longer use the scsi card for
his zip-drive. Anyway, the network card loads fine, HW address and
everything, we just cant ping any other local machine. Also we are trying to
get his geforce 2 card to work with nvidias drivers, but x crashes completely
after about 10 seconds use. The geforce card we think is the culprit as the
network used to be on irq 12 (its a realtek 81930 or something). Here is the
important otput from /proc/pci :

This is without USB interface loaded which uses irq 10 also. How can i

I hadn't thought of that, sounds fine, and of course i'd have to be very
careful with the security. And maybe i'll check out the code from autologin
and start modifying it to fit my needs, if i get over my lazyness :)

Hola Francisco (No hablan mucho español en estas listas, eh? :)

Ok. AFAIK IceWM doesn't support icons on the desktop by itself

But you could use another thing that does, along with it. Typical
examples are the corresponding parts of KDE or GNOME that do that,
but as you appreciate the memory savings that could not be a good
idea (when are they going to optimize those to run fine on a 32Mb
box?). For that, check out DFM (Desktop File Manager). It imitates
the look and feel of the OS/2 WPS (if you used it before you may
like this), and as the name says one of it's functions is exactly
that, to put icons on the desktop. It's light on memory too, and
it's not hard to get used to it. I used it before, but since a
hard disk crash some time ago i haven't reinstalled it, i'll do
it soon :)

I have inserted this line at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:

/sbin/hdparm -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 /dev/hda

 - and I also have a line just like it for /dev/hdb and /dev/hde.
This has proven to be the best place to put it, at least for me, unless you
want to put it in a script and run it from your init.d.

Bear in mind that I am using ext2 partitions, not Reiser; so make sure you
check the viability of the options I used before you go trashing your system
by blindly following my lead. I haven't checked into the Reiser system's
differences from ext2. I am just telling you what works for me.

is the card a pci or agp? what slot is it in? it must in the slot next to the

Hi,

That IS a good solution Civileme; however, most of the time when I am
going to delete a full directory, I do the following:

ls /dir
and if it IS in fact what I want to delete, I then type
rm -Rf ESC+_
(that is escape and underscore, to insert that last argument from the last
command)
which prevents ANY possible typo/cat-from-hell incident.

[expert] Screen resolution

Hi everyone,
I've just installed Mandrake 8.0 on my PowerPC G4. The installations
works fine until I reboot for the first time. The resolution of the screen
is not the right one and I'm unable to change it. I change the setting to be
able to login in the "text mode" but when I type "startx" to go in the X
window environment, it is impossible to work. Is there a way to change the
default resolution without being in X window? I don't know where the screen
resolution is set.

Thanks

[expert] Securty upgrade broke my system.

2001-09-16 Thread Christian Dysthe

Hi,

I added a security upgrade source to the software manager in Mandrake 8.0.
There were a lot of packages that could be upgraded. I did them all thinking
these are security ones and not from a unstable tree.

After a reboot modules weren't loaded right. I didn't have sound and other
things didn't work either. I resintalled Mandrake 8.0. I have now been
upgrading again, but avoided the three packages that seem most "fundamental":
glibc, ldconfig and the kernel stuff. Everything works fine. I was wondering
which of these could be the "killer"? Since I am not sure if the kernel
upgrade actually installs a new kernel I would think it is glibc or ldconfig,
but I am not sure, and I do not want to test it! :)

Ideas?

TIA

cases, you can put a left double quote then use tab completion to call up

If you did the kernel update from MandrakeUpdate, that's what killed your
system. You need to download the .rpm files for that one and install
manually to make it work right.

Re: [expert] irq conflict

2001-09-16 Thread Asheesh Laroia

In the BIOS settings, find the advanced hardware properties. In there,
there should be an option to disable "IRQ for VGA" (that is, take away the
video card's IRQ). That's how all my systems are set up, and it works for
me (tm). Then tell it to "Reset ECSD Data" (this clears the IRQ-device
cache).

That should free up that conflicting IRQs.

In the BIOS, there should also be a "Manual IRQ setup" configuration
option. Make sure it is either disabled, or enabled with *all IRQs* set
to "PCI / PnP".

The only thing I'm worried about is 3D speed. None of the machines here
are used for it, so I can't say disabling its IRQ doesn't slow it down.
Does anyone else know?

Hope this helps.

Another note:

If you don't need serial ports, disable them. You might be able to enable
USB and still disable its IRQ in the BIOS as well. Disable all unneeded
parallel ports. If he doesn't have any devices on the floppy controller
(e.g., I don't have a floppy drive in my system), disable it. Same goes
for any BIOS-controlled devices.

You might be able to get around the IRQ conflict by just disabling serial
ports (how long has it been since I used of those, anyway?).

The card is agp, an the crash is in X, not the linux framebuffer. It
displayes the nvidia splash., then you get approx 10 seconds of kde usage and
it just locks, although you can move the mouse the keyboard is unusable. But
this may now be fixed thanks to asheesh's advice. Is this a common problem

[expert] win2k to samba printing [This is a REPOST]

2001-09-16 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

Hello all,
Over the weekend I was able to setup Samba on mdk8.1b3 and I'm
able to see my shares under Network Places on the win2k box and I can
also see my Epson860 printer and I can print to it with most programs.
However, there are a few programs that I've noticed so far that generate
a simple "print error" message and fail to print (microsoft photo editor
and kodak image editor are two such programs). After this happens, it
takes a few minutes for the win2k box to find the printer again (maybe
it actually is receiving the file and just not spooling it?)

My question is this: How can I get seamless support for printing? I
use multiple client platforms (imac, win2k, linux, etc...) but I would
like my backbone stuff (web, email, printer, file servers, etc...) to
run on linux only without having to unplug and plug cables different
places or boot into different operating systems to get the job done. I
will be setting up netatalk this week, but again, I would like to know
that samba is functioning correctly first.

Should I grab the newer Samba packages from cooker? Is there maybe a
setting that I've overlooked? Is the problem more likely to be in the
cups packages or another package that I haven't thought of yet?

TIA, Mike

If my email seems to vague, please write me for more info ~ I really
need help!!
