Re: [expert] 8.2 cd burning issues
I communicated that to crashtesters list and cooker list at least two times from beta 3; but finally the buggy xcdroast was put in 8.2. Cdrecord and mkisofts are runing fine so the problem is the xcdroast package. Solution: use other front-end for burning cds or, if you as me like xcdroast, take the 8.1 rpms and you need install (previously rpm -e) cdrecord, cdrecord-cddawav, mkisofs and xcdroast and it run again (probably the other front-end burner not). BTW you need to force de unistallation because other packages need the new cdrecord and mkisofs packages. Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Jarmo, Check the newbie archives from a couple of days ago. Tom Brinkman posted a URL for a version of Eroaster that was fixed to work with 8.2. Nice attitude guys. You're right maybe I should be on the beginner list. I've been using linux since kernel 0.9...I am a unix sys admin, have been for 11 years now. I've used over 20 different types of Unix in production environments. easy man! I was venting at having problems with the new release...happens to all of us. I didn test the rc's ...I waited for the final release, assuming that obvious bugs would be taken care of. Fixed yesterday - removed the two egcs packages that were installed and it went with 2.96. I have an idea the packages are used for kernel compiles, so I will need to put them back eventually. Hi All, I put mdk 8.2 on my test drive then I decided that I wanted to test out VMWare. Of course I'd much prefer to test out such things on my test system. It seems though that VMWare requires certain kernel modules which are not out and do not compile when it tries to compile them itself. Plus seeing that I'm just trying out VMWare for the first time and picked up an evaluation copy I noticed on their website that they said that they do not support folks like me and their self help doesn't help. I recompiled the kernel with the CMI8738 drivers built-into the kernel. I also got rid of a lot of apparently superflous sound stuff (OSS drivers?) and drivers for hardware I don't have. Now sound works fine. If anybody else with the same (or similar) hardware runs into this problem I'd be glad to mail them the contents of my /usr/src/linux/.config file. BTW, I also compiled in UDF write support and have done huge file copies to and from my DVDRAM and had no problems. Why is istill listed as dangerous when I run xmenuconfig? Re: [expert] ADSL setup - first attempt (help !!!)
I finally got a chance to work with this again and this time got in touch with the isp. it turns out that they one of those that bind the client eth0 h/w addr into their config. (i guess this process happens automatically during the setup under windoze..)and they ARE running pppoe and not dhcp. unfortunately, i still could'nt get the adsl to come up. the logs still show the same ...Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2 ...Timeout waiting for PADO packets ...LCP: Timeout waiting for Config-Requests the Roaring penguin site mentions not to use the clients thats ship with distros.. viz RH. so i'm going to the take the latest rp-pppoe, that i just downloaded tomorrow on a disk and try all over again cheers, -- Ashley Moore. - Linux User#229125 - On Fri, 2002-03-22 at 00:32, Raffaele Belardi wrote: > I am not an expert and have never done this in practice. [expert] Major problems with Xwindows in 8.2
Something funky is really going on. I installed 8.2 on Wednesday evening and all was well and I had rebooted 2-3 times since the first install. But last night something funky happened. Btw. I've got a Nvidia TNT2(32megs) card and a HP4033A monitor. Last night, while streaming my fav radio station, I decided to install XMMS presets(converted by someone from Wimamp to XMMS). The presets weren't showing so I closed xmms and tried to reload it and it just wouldn't. I would look like its loading then disapear. So I logged off restarted X server and went back into KDE and still xmms wouldn't start. So reboot I would would fix the problem. This is when the problem all started. Just after you get the login prompt the screen flickers like it's about to go to the NVIDIA splash screen and then back to the prompt again. Then after a few seconds it says it's going to level 3 and I'm back at the prompt. btw: I did recompile and install the nvidia kernal and glx JUST in case. I reboot again and this time I went into FAILSAFE, after the text menu comes up I select GRAPHICAL option, it boots fine into Xwindows(and KDE), I also get the splash screen for NVidia as well. Shutdown reboot back to normal linux startup and nothing, back to the same old thing at the prompt. Here's a copy of my XFree log file after I log in and type STARTX(yes I know small caps) I've attached the log file. _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx XFree86.0.log.bak Description: Binary data Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] 8.2 and Sony Vaio FX200
I have Mandrake 8.2 up and running on a twin P3 desktop and now my laptop. The desktop went without a hitch because the disk was erased and full installation was done. My laptop was much more difficult. To start with, I had to use the usb.img kernel on floppy to get anywhere in the install process. If I just ran the cd from the start, the install program would simply vanish after the serial detection. Booting with the usb kernel got me past that and to the upgrade. Things went smoothly until I tried to recompile the kernel with acpi instead of apm. Found out that the links in /etc/alternatives were broken. I had then pointing to 3.0.1 which of course got upgraded to 3.0.4 but the by then the links had been broken. I had to go back and manually but the links back in /usr/bin and correct the ones I had in /etc/alternatives. So far, that was the only glitch. Good work Mandrake. Hello again, I should have mentioned that both the CD and the floppy disk work without any problems. I used them to install 8.1 in another machine that I have. Just to be sure, I checked again and they work. I have also tried the other.img to see if that would work, it gives me nothing. Any ideas? /Edvard -Ursprungligt meddelande- Sounds like a dodgy CD to be honest, can you get another copy or download. If you have the ISO did you check the checksum. Apart from that I have no idea. Re: [expert] Single network firewall install problem
Two things that could be the problem: 1) CD ROM (Swap the CD ROM from a box that you know works) 2) Network Card (The SNF does not work with the tulip driver) Using 2 3COM NICs of the same model need to be configured from within the cards bios before you install the OS. Usualy you can install the OS but I have had it lockup on Second Stage Ram Disk. I have had a simular issues with the SNF. I have had to swap CR ROMs on several boxes - also if you used an ISO to create the CD you may have a problem there with the boot image ( I have had it work on some and not on others also). Create the CD with the lowest speed setting - like 4x. Youe can also make a boot disk and boot from the floopy disk. I have also had to swap floppy drives and had problems with the floppy contoller that gave the same results. Carl Lindgren C. R. [expert] pppd shutting down
I have a machine set up at to facilitate sharing of a dial up connection for my home network. I am finding that pppd will suddenly die completely or sometimes just become unresponsive requiring a restart. The box is an older one still running mdk7.1 (yeah I know it's older but then so is the box). I don't see anything in the logs to indicate any problems. Are there any experts out there that can comment on why this might be happening? Thanks. -- Mike Rambo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] Am I the ONLY one or does 8.2 REALLY Stink??????????
Yeah, I'm getting real sick of this M$ cloak-and-dagger assassin crap. It's like in the last week or so somebody uncorked the bottle containing every clueless slime crawling M$ troller in the world. I mean, here this guy that Dianne responded to has only sent three messages to the expert list since January 12; including this one. None at all to the newbie list. I checked. Out of those messages, there were two threads contributed to; this one and the "How Best to Support Mandrake" thread. No technical issues involved; none at all. Now we get this one. Now you all please pardon me if you think I'm being slightly paranoid; but these days I don't think I'm totally crazy if I'm suspect of somebody blowing off at the mouth with neither a coherent question or a coherent demonstration of technical literacy. If you have a question, post the bitch. If you don't know where to start, well, here's a quarter, go buy a clue. PICK A PLACE AND START. [expert] Problem with a Dell Pentium Pro
Hi, I posted this question at the newbie list but got no luck, they suggested to post it here instead. Here it goes. I´m trying to install Mandrake 8.1 with no luck. When I boot the machine with the CD or the floppy with the cdrom.img it stops just after this line: "SYSLINUX 1.48 Linux-Mandrake copyright 1994-1999 H. Peter Avin" The monitor loses contact with the computer (gets ofline) and the cdrom spins a little and then stops. And all the ligths in the front panel at the computer starts to blink in sync. Any ideas about what could be the problem? Some info about this machine: -Dell XPS 180n, a Pentium Pro machine at 180Mhz with 98 MB RAM. -Matrox Mystique 220 4 MB RAMDAC -Creative SB32 -HD(1) IDE IBM-DAQA-33240 (Master) -HD (2) IDE WDC-AC31600H Both harddrives are clean, nothing on them. The filesystem on both are FAT32 right now after format. I flashed the motherboard with the latest driver, while I had win98 and it worked great. No problems there. I have been removing hardware to see if the install would kick in, but no result there. I appreciate any help. I credit it with my still being able to run very old pc100 at 135mhz, cas2. Asus is another brand besides Sony, Epox and MSI and a few other good quality mobo's which provide extra I/O by default. Probly why they're always on AMD's recommended list ;) > BTW, when running sensors-detect, it mentioned that you didn't need > to do certain modprobe commands if those modules were already built > in to the kernel. A 'locate' will show a sh!+load of 'em in /usr/src/linux-2/drivers/ Beginning with the Christmas Cooker 8.2, I got an error durin boot that 'i2c-proc' wasn't loaded successfully, but looking later in the boot process the needed i2c modules were. Even with the boot error mesg, 'sensors' still worked good as ever. There was a discussion of this recently on the cooker mailing list. Some said to put the modules that 'sensors-detect' specified in /etc/modules rather than /etc/modules.conf. I found that simply leaving the modules in modules.conf, but also adding 'i2c-proc' to etc/modules made the boot error mesg go away. Anyhow, I'm glad you seem to have found your problem, still surprised memtest86 didn't find it. Makes an additional case for runnin cpuburn. It's an old overclockers tool to verify stability, but IMO, should be run on any decent system. If a desktop can run cpuburn for an hour, it should be bulletproof to run 24/7 till the cows come home ;) If it can't run cpuburn... it ain't decent. -- Tom Brinkman Corpus Christi, Texas Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] new user and NIS
Hi People, I am missing something. I have a NIS server where I set new users and some others computers connected to it by ypclient. However now I've put some new users and they cannot log in the satellite machines. I did 'make in /var/yp/' and restart yp services, but nothing worked. There's no problem with old users. If someone could clarify me, I'd be very thankful. -- --- Alan Wilter S. da Silva --- Laboratório de Física Biológica Instituto de Biofísica Carlos Chagas Filho Universidade do Brasil/UFRJ Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] Am I the ONLY one or does 8.2 REALLY Stink??????????
care to give more details about your claims? seems to me that its just you. im not saying that mandrake 8.2 is a very very neat distro but just claiming this and that and blaming it all on the distro is not at all gonna help you solve your problems. giving more info about what you did, your hardware details and when the problem shows will at least give us more idea how to help you. --- Larry Blodgett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Something is strange in Gotham City. [expert] Am I the ONLY one or does 8.2 REALLY Stink??????????
Something is strange in Gotham City. I have been using Mandrake from the beginning. I am a big fan but the 8.2 will not configure correctly in so many different ways it is hard to list them all. Network access is not only corrupted but it even corrupts the whole network. I have installed several times on several machines and have found major process corruption. I maybe wrong but there seems to bed a real problem here. The worse problem is the inability to set up any form of network. TCPIP just doesn't work. I always install using expert mode in case your wondering. My MD5 checked good. Someway in the final release poison was put into the mix or something like that. -- Have a nice day, ___ "If you're not a liberal by age 20, you have no heart " "If you're not a conservative by age 40, you have no brain" ___ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] ADSL setup - first attempt (help !!!)
I am not an expert and have never done this in practice. Anyway... My understanding is that PPPoE and DHCP are mutually exclusive (see also http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/configure.html). Which one does your Telco use? Assuming it is PPPoE, ifconfig should show both the ppp and the eth interfaces up. What does ifconfg show when you configure pppoe (not dhcp)? Your previous message showed the folowing log: >>Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/5 >>Timecout waiting for PADO packets What device is pts? The second line shows that the PPPoE client started, it probably sent out the PADI packet but did not receive the PADO answwer from the Telco. Could it be that it was not connected to the eth interface? bye, raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > hi again, > > i am using the mdk 8.1 power pack edition. all software versions are > according to whats on the CD. Try su -c 'chmod a+w /proc/bus/usb/001/002', where 002 is the device number of your USB camera. This number is easy to find out, just ls /proc/bus/usb/001, and look for the non-001 entry!
