[expert] again realtec 8139
hi, have detected a weird problem on my box with realtec 8139. let me start : have tried the follwing situations : first at all I made an install like absolutly new PC. had installed a 3Com3c905x as a eth0 and a realtec 8139too as a eth1 eth0 first got the ipadress 10.0.0.10 for a connection to my adsl-modem from alcatel, realtec as a eth1 got the ipadress 192.168.10.15 for hosting as an internal network-host. every 20 to 30 hours my machine stucks again and again. got a lot of this message here : probable hardwarebug: clock timer configutation lost - probably a VIA686a motherboard.d:0 probably hardware bug: restoring chip configuration now I've tried the other situation : installed again on the same new PC, but made a change of eth0 eth1 so now eth0 was 10.0.0.10 and eth1 was now 192.168.10.15 now I had a connection to internet, but NOT to the slave-host with 192.168.10.5 but a ping to 192.168.10.15 was okay. the hardwareclock-bug-messages disappears, mdk was running WITHOUT stucks after 20 oder more hours. tried a new one situation - installing again from scratch - without 3Com-card the internetconnecton was okay - the machine had ip 10.0.0.10 the machine was running fine without stucks, changing again - now with 3Com and NO realtec - was also fine tried again both - the realtec and 3Com - the weirdness starts again. Now I have 2 3Coms - and NO problems - seems to me, that realtec is not a good choice in combination with 3Com - ON MY HARDWARE. I don't know, which behavior I would have with another PC-Hardware. and am sorry about, that I cannot made a test with 2 realtecs, I don't have 2 realtecs. Is anyone there, which have detected such problems like this one ? On the motherboard I couldn't change the IRQ's because have only the possibility to change from PCI to ISA - not more. tried also to change the Slotplaces, so I had onetime IRQ 5 to realtec and 9 to 3Com the 2nd time I had 5 to 3Com and 9 to realtec. IRQ 9 to realtec produces the weird hardwareproblems. during this testphase I was missing a tool in mdk 8.0 that I can change the configuration of eth0 and eth1 from ip-1 to ip-2 a littlebit easier. think that some routingerrors was also a result of these missing tools, but am not sure about. all this test takes me a long time now for about 2 or 3 days. and the onlyone result for me is, with realtec I have a lot of problems. would be very interested of about your experiences about such problems - are there some experiences in this list ? bye hans schneidhofer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Although I can't answer with specifics I can point you to a starting point on the wireless stuff. A real good site for starting is here. http://www.netscum.com/~clapp/wireless.html It goes into the theory needed. If you are looking to do this on the cheap (and I do mean cheap) check out this site for homemade antenna. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/has.html For a 400 meter run if you have clear line of site, (No trees buildings etc.) Low power Microwave (0.5 watt or less) should do the trick. This is were I'd start to look. It will require a clear path and should be encrypted but it will be the easiest way to setup and maintain a link. 802.11b with one of the antenna's mentioned on the first link will actually work over that distance but is much more subject to weather etc. If you want a bunch of sites put pringles and antenna into google and have fun surfing. [expert] Printing to Win2K fails
I'm having a terrible time printing from my Mandrake 8.2 system to an OfficeJet K60 spooled on Win2K. I use SMB to print. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just doesn't; the pattern has been completely random. When it doesn't work, the document will appear briefly in my Win2K queue but disappears with no printer activity before any page or size data comes in. As best I can tell from my packet sniffer, the connection is established but no actual data passes through. I expect Win2K to give me little or no diagnostics, and it doesn't. But neither does the Samba system on Linux. All I (sometimes) get is the Cupsomatic filter stopping with status 32 just after the samba backend starts up. When printing DOES work, however, it performs brilliantly, and I do everything reasonable to maintain whatever settings and configurations I made to accomplish it. But a week and a restart later, nothing. SMB works fine for file sharing, however. Absolutely no problems reading-writing a shared directory on the Win2K pc. And I tried going the other direction: setting up Win2K to accept LPD connections from Unix. That didn't work either;. Win2K complains Linux sends it illegal instructions over the port and rejects the job. Any ideas? -- j Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
