Re: [expert] IDEcdrw - SCSI emulation

2002-06-11 Thread Ross Pearson

I've checked out some other stuff and it seems the ide-scsi module is loading at boot
(insmod ide-scsi reports that the module already exists).

the problem is that when I try to mount the drive I get:

[ross@localhost dev]$ mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist

and this is because the /dev/scd0 link is broken ie:

/dev/scd0 - /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

when it should point to:

/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target2/lun0/cd

As this is all automatically configured at boot can anyone help with suggestions of
what could be going on.

thanks
Ross

The SMTP server is unable to find the hostname that belongs to the

The error is temporary (450 means try again later). This probably
means that the address-hostname lookup timed out.

In order to fid out what DNS server is responsible for your

dig mx yyy.xxx.195.in-addr.arpa.

or

host -t ns yyy.xxx.195.in-addr.arpa.

So, as I noticed before, It's not only up to you to have your DNS properly

Or am I wrong again?

Hi guys,

my latest install experience with KDE301 was with the texstar packages
and once I was finished jumping through all the hoops kde was putting me
through and the packages were installed they've been working flawlessly.

now, I feel compelled to mention that kde 2.x did not exist on this
machine before hand so I have a feeling that made a great deal of
difference since when it was here and I was upgrading from it to kde
3.x it would kill the X-server each and every time leaving me with only
console mode.

So, my two cents would be if you've got kde 2.x on your system already
and you want to upgrade then uninstall 2.x first and make sure you get
it all cause if you don't it will make you very sorry. If you don't
then your work is already half done.

you can get the packages from texstar here:

[expert] again realtec 8139

2002-06-11 Thread hans schneidhofer

hi,

have detected a weird problem on my box with realtec 8139. let me start :

have tried the follwing situations :
first at all I made an install like absolutly new PC.
had installed a 3Com3c905x as a eth0 and a realtec 8139too as a eth1
eth0 first got the ipadress 10.0.0.10 for a connection to my adsl-modem from
alcatel, realtec as a eth1 got the ipadress 192.168.10.15 for hosting as an
internal network-host.

every 20 to 30 hours my machine stucks again and again.
got a lot of this message here :

probable hardwarebug: clock timer configutation lost - probably a VIA686a
motherboard.d:0
probably hardware bug: restoring chip configuration

now I've tried the other situation :
installed again on the same new PC, but made a change of eth0 eth1
so now eth0 was 10.0.0.10 and eth1 was now 192.168.10.15

now I had a connection to internet, but NOT to the slave-host with
192.168.10.5 but a ping to 192.168.10.15 was okay.

the hardwareclock-bug-messages disappears, mdk was running WITHOUT stucks
after 20 oder more hours.

tried a new one situation - installing again from scratch - without 3Com-card
the internetconnecton was okay - the machine had ip 10.0.0.10

the machine was running fine without stucks,
changing again - now with 3Com and NO realtec - was also fine

tried again both - the realtec and 3Com - the weirdness starts again.

Now I have 2 3Coms - and NO problems - seems to me, that realtec is not a
good choice in combination with 3Com - ON MY HARDWARE. I don't know, which
behavior I would have with another PC-Hardware. and am sorry about, that I
cannot made a test with 2 realtecs, I don't have 2 realtecs.

Is anyone there, which have detected such problems like this one ?

On the motherboard I couldn't change the IRQ's because have only the
possibility to change from PCI to ISA - not more.

tried also to change the Slotplaces, so I had onetime IRQ 5 to realtec and 9
to 3Com the 2nd time I had 5 to 3Com and 9 to realtec.

IRQ 9 to realtec produces the weird hardwareproblems.

during this testphase I was missing a tool in mdk 8.0 that I can change the
configuration of eth0 and eth1 from ip-1 to ip-2 a littlebit easier.
think that some routingerrors was also a result of these missing tools, but
am not sure about.

all this test takes me a long time now for about 2 or 3 days. and the onlyone
result for me is, with realtec I have a lot of problems.

would be very interested of about your experiences about such problems - are
there some experiences in this list ?

bye

** server can't find simpson.preciso.net: NXDOMAIN

You see, you do not exist, so mandrax, rightly so, is not allowing mail
from you. You do not exist when I look you up on a dns server that is
out on the internet too:

[drjung@sherman drjung]$ nslookup -sil simpson.preciso.net 4.2.2.1
Server: 4.2.2.1
Address:4.2.2.1#53

** server can't find simpson.preciso.net: NXDOMAIN

If you want to send mail to smtp.mandrax.org, you must first make sure
you register your domain name, and you must then have that name in the
address space of a dns server running on the internet (just ask Pierre
about this...grin). Some public dns server needs to point to your
hostname. I might be best to read up on domains, hostnames, and dns
records.

Good luck,
drjung

Although I can't answer with specifics I can point you to a starting
point on the wireless stuff. A real good site for starting is here.

http://www.netscum.com/~clapp/wireless.html

It goes into the theory needed.

If you are looking to do this on the cheap (and I do mean cheap) check
out this site for homemade antenna.

http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/has.html

For a 400 meter run if you have clear line of site, (No trees buildings
etc.) Low power Microwave (0.5 watt or less) should do the trick. This
is were I'd start to look. It will require a clear path and should be
encrypted but it will be the easiest way to setup and maintain a link.
802.11b with one of the antenna's mentioned on the first link will
actually work over that distance but is much more subject to weather
etc. If you want a bunch of sites put pringles and antenna into google
and have fun surfing.

Many switches
(not hubs) can be used to extend the distance of CAT5 cable. You'll have
to locate them alongthe wire so no segment exceeds the max length.

[expert] KDE commandline parameters?

Hi,

I use KDE 3.0.1 (the newest version by Texstar). I start it from the cli
with kde3. When I log off from KDE I get back to the cli and see a lot of
warnings and error messages from KDE.

At LinuxTag in Karlsruhe, Germany I asked the KDE guys about it and one
of them stated that most of it are debugging messages which I can turn
off by using a start parameter. I did not jot that parameter down, so I
forgot it the minute I returned home.

Anybody knows this?

At LinuxTag in Karlsruhe, Germany I asked the KDE guys about it and one
of them stated that most of it are debugging messages which I can turn
off by using a start parameter. I did not jot that parameter down, so I
forgot it the minute I returned home.

 Anybody knows this?

That seems to handle some of the messages. Other messages are stating
that this or that file was not found in /usr/share/mdk/kde/ while KDE is
installed in /opt/ and I don't have an older version of KDE in /usr/.

OK, thanks for this and I'll go on learning.

[expert] Sound in Xine

2002-06-11 Thread Wolfgang Bornath

Hi,

I run xine to view a dvd. Xine shows the pictures fine without any
problems but I don't have any sound.

Otherwise sound works (CD, signal-wavs in KDE, etc). The audio tab in the
config screen of xine shows audio driver to use: 'null'.

I use xine 0.9.8

Optical fibre would probably be the easiest if running a cable is no
problem. This would also have the advantage of providing electrical
isolation between the segments and of course deliver full bandwidth.
All you would need is a fibre transceiver at each end and a cable in
between. I think it would be tough to do it any cheaper than that - at
least without compromising the bandwidth enormously.

[expert] Pinging Secure Mandrake

2002-06-11 Thread Jeremy Mereness

The table on http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/msec.php shows that
Security Level 4 and higher causes ICMP Echo (ping) packets to get
dropped.

How is this accomplished? Is it in the kernel itself? I thought it might
have been a pre-defined IPtables rule executed by an msec script, but my
IPtables are empty. Yet pings still get dropped.

Thanks!

Hans ...
If you have the two 3coms working I'd stick with them. Some
benchmarks we ran at my old job had the 3c905 and the Pro100's as the
two Nics with the greatest through put. realtek and linksys were nice
but only about 80% of the through put of the 3coms.
Davicomwell. it worked. sorta.

[expert] RPM - Rebuild question.

2002-06-11 Thread James

All,

Now that I have a boxen that is kde3 only (as apposed to kde2) I've
been trying to re-build some apps that are kde3 compatible but not yet
built into rpms. My Q is How do you pass a prefix using rpm --rebuild?
Check of the man pages etc. Make it seem that this can be passed only
for a relocatable rpm. Really just want to check and see if I'm off
base or not.

[expert] Connection to ODBC database

2002-06-11 Thread Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I have a client that is using a Windows program to access a database file on a Samba
share. The program is using Windows built-in ODBC drivers.

Question: how can I make database queries to this file? The only info I've got so far
is that it is a Fox pro database.  It's not being served from a database server;
each windows client uses its
odbc to serve it to the client.

[expert] Printing to Win2K fails

2002-06-11 Thread Jeremy Mereness

I'm having a terrible time printing from my Mandrake 8.2 system to an
OfficeJet K60 spooled on Win2K.

I use SMB to print. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just doesn't; the
pattern has been completely random. When it doesn't work, the document
will appear briefly in my Win2K queue but disappears with no printer
activity before any page or size data comes in. As best I can tell from
my packet sniffer, the connection is established but no actual data
passes through.

I expect Win2K to give me little or no diagnostics, and it doesn't. But
neither does the Samba system on Linux. All I (sometimes) get is the
Cupsomatic filter stopping with status 32 just after the samba backend
starts up.

When printing DOES work, however, it performs brilliantly, and I do
everything reasonable to maintain whatever settings and configurations I
made to accomplish it. But a week and a restart later, nothing.

SMB works fine for file sharing, however. Absolutely no problems
reading-writing a shared directory on the Win2K pc. And I tried going
the other direction: setting up Win2K to accept LPD connections from
Unix. That didn't work either;. Win2K complains Linux sends it illegal
instructions over the port and rejects the job.

Any ideas?

Bob,
Is it an actual Foxpro Database, which is a container for Foxpro tables,
views, triggers and stored proceedures, or is it just a DBF table?
If it is just a table how many records are in it?

Believe it or not, OpenOffice has a nice built in odbc DBF connection. All
you have to do is create folder to contain dbf tables or point to a directory
which contains them. You can use Access-like query makers to generate
queries that can select records, and you can create forms with data-aware
controls on them to display, edit, add and delete records!

Unfortunately, posting to the list is giving me fits. I think my
messages are actually being posted because I saw a response from Pierre
to one on my postings. Yet, I never saw my own post. This leads me to
think that maybe it is my pop3 server that is screwing up.

I don't think it's your server that's in question, Dr J...cause I have
been noticing the exact same thing. Sometimes I see replies to what I
have posted before I see my own message hit the list; and this has been
happening ever since I joined.

 I am still
receiving mail at a ISP pop3 server because when I joined the list some
three years ago, I did not have my own mail server running. Looks like I
will have to rejoin again but everyone will have to promise to never,
 ever send html postings :-)

 drjung

Do you think it's possible that rejoining would solve the problem? I'm
not so sure of that

But I do promise to keep on boycotting the html email. ;)

[expert] kde 3.0.1; kmail gpg not available

2002-06-11 Thread Kevin

I recently updated my kde to the 3.0.1 rpms. Since then, I can no longer
encrypt emails using kmail and gpg. Before, I could at least select the
encryption button even though it returned a malformed header error. Now,
the encrypt options are totally greyed out. Is anyone else having this
problem?

Thanks,

Kevin
