[expert] Wireless lan card setup?

2002-07-12 Thread Nelson Bartley

Hi Guys,

I'm really rather new to pcmcia and wireless lan in general, however I
was recently given a wireless pcmcia card which uses the wvlan_cs driver
and thought I would try to get this up and running.

However I'm not exactly sure how to do this?

Do I:
1) add an entry to modules.conf that sais:
alias eth1 wvlan_cs
2) goto /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and edit ifup-eth1 and add the
WIRELESS device entries?
3) start eth1 and I should "in-theory" be able to use the wireless nic?

If I'm missing something here I'd like to know. I know the card works as
it has been detect in both windows and linux properly.

Thanks Guys, anyhelp is greatly appreciated.

Nope, pmfirewalls does not work with iptables but I sure wish the hell
it did. You are totally right on, pmfirewall rocks! On his web page, the
creator says he wants to get around to doing a program that supports
iptables. Maybe if we offered him some money, he would find the time :-)

We are using MailScanner with NAI uvscan and are very impressed. MailScanner
works well with SpamAssassin, catches 99.9% of all spam that was coming

[expert] Anti-virus for mail server--best solution for cash-strapped org?

2002-07-12 Thread Damon Lynch

Hi,

We have a mail server, and for the moment anyway, windows users
(although I'm hoping for a few Linux converts with our new terminal
server setup :-) ).

We have a setup on the mail server where an anti-virus program can be
called from the command line before the IMAP folders receive the mail.
There is no need for some complex Trend anti-virus with pre-packaged
SMTP. The way it was set up, normal command line mail tools still work.
I didn't set it up and actually I don't know a lot about these things
:-) I just know in a situation with mail, keeping it simple and being
able to used time honored tools can be a very good thing.

Is F-Prot viable in a setup like this? It seems a lot cheaper than some
other solutions. Dev-Zone is a non-profit organisation, so these things
count.

Depends on your firewall methodology: if using iptables, write iptable
rule; if using ipchains, use ipchain rule. Search the docs (online or
offline) for syntax on rules.

I am running 8.2 with xinerama, and it worked out of the box with kde 3.0.2
packages. The X configurator asked me if I wanted xinerama version or just
plain screen (Matrox G550).

The boxes are of course grayed out if the xinerama is not enabled on the
server itself. In kde xinerama options only tell the window manager to be
aware of xinerama and make more intelligent window placement decisions.

Even without that, you should be have two screens up and running and you
should be able to move windows across the two screens at will.

Dean,

You need to recompile the kdelibs package. When you are recompiling it,
ensure that --enable-xinerama is passed to the configure script.

I have read the HOWTO (several times). (a) It is old; at the time it

problem is _not_ getting xinerama to work. It _is_ working just fine.
I can slide windows from one monitor to the other.

Also the xinerama extensions _are_ enabled in /etc/X11/XF86Config.

There is no problem with X and Xinerama.

But the _window manager_ (indeed all of KDE) acts as though it is
unaware of the two physical monitors so that, for example, if I
horiztonally maximise a window it stretchs across the whole desktop.

I appreciate your trying to help. I don't want to be rude and ignore
your attempts. But re-stating all this every third message is

[expert] Sound Is Impossible

2002-07-12 Thread Daryl Johnson

It's taken me 4 weeks of fairly constant tinkering, adjustment and
experimentation to arrive at the conclusion that it is impossible to
configure my sound card - which seems remarkable as in most ways it is
getting recognised.

Forgive the long post but if anyone has anything constructive to add at least
all the information should be here :o)

Hardware Configuration

ABIT VP6 mother board
Twin Pentium III processors 1000 mhz
512Mb ram
1 x 40 Gb drives
1 x HP CdROM RW
1 x Adaptec SCSI I/F
1 x Travan SCSI tape
1 x GE Force 2MX video card
1 x Creative Blaster 4.1 Digital

Software

Started with a purchase of Mandrake 8.0 Powerpack because I liked 7.2
Currently using 8.2 because it came on the cover of Linux Today and I hoped
it would self-configure the sound.

The Bios in the machine has been tried with plug'n play switched on and off.
It's currently on

Information

Output from dmesg shows no recognition of a sound card at all, though there
have been times during this saga when I have seen es1371 mentioned.

My /etc/modules.conf is :

alias usb-interface usb-uhci

# ALSA native device support
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major = 116 snd_cards_limit = 1
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1371

# OSS/Free setup
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

probeall scsi_hostadapter advansys
alias eth0 3c59x

Output from lsmod is:

Running drakxservices shows that both Alsa and Sound are started at boot and
running. Checking further I find that in Control Centre my board is
recognised as an Ensoniq 5880 Audio PCI using kernel module es1371 (which was
why I used this module when setting up modules.conf) The configuration tool
produces nothing however and neither does sndconfig.

The IRQ is 11 and is shared between advansys, usb and ensoniq
The ports are cc00-cc3f Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI

Interestingly the PCI report states:

00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
Subsystem: Ensoniq: Unknown device 8001
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
I/O ports at cc00 [size=64]
Capabilities

The last line certainly makes me gnash my teeth because I can't see why that
would be the case, however...

I am at the end of my tether. The card appears to be recognised and has a
module available but has defied all my efforts to get a peep out of it.

If there are any suggestions I would be more than willing to hear/try them
out. As I say, after 4 hard weeks I figure I'm out of ideas and patience.
The only thing I can say for certain is that there are plenty of people
writing to a variety of ngs using this chip-set who

Re: [expert] kernel building questions

2002-07-12 Thread Jason Bowman

Have you tried compiling reiserfs into the kernel instead of a module? I know
you can use the mkinitrd to make a ram disk with all of the modules you need
to load before the file systems can be mounted, but I have found it easier
(sometimes) to just compile it in.
