I'm not really sure I know what I'm talking about, but I once got
confused with java installations because Mandrake 8.2 came with kaffe
and at that point I didn't know there were Sun versions and other
versions. Perhaps you have kaffe 1.1?

[expert] cannot locate block device '/dev/dvd' on Toshiba 2400

2002-12-15 Thread david . whiting
Hi,

I'm migrating my Mandrake 8.2 system to a new laptop (Toshiba 2400).
This machine has a DVD/CDROM drive, but when I boot I get the following
message:

Assigning raw devices: cannot locate block device '/dev/dvd' (No such
file or directory)

Once the machine has booted, the CD works fine, but not the DVD (no
surprise). I also have a second floppy listed in fstab:

/mnt/floppy2 /mnt/floppy2 supermount
dev=/dev/fd1,fs=vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,umask=0,sync,codepage=850 0 0

which reappears if I try to remove the entry (I think).

Searching for this DVD error message I found one post (not Mandrake,
SuSe perhaps?) that suggested appending nobiospnp to the command line. I
have tried this but it did not help.

Any ideas?

Dave

Interesting and accurate thought... But I still hold to hardware,as a
possible source, only because the same box that has this problem had it
with 8.2 and 8.1 also. (I didn't have it before that, it's a used
laptop btw) The boxes that aren't having problems all have cdroms or
cdwriters that are under 1 year old. I can on my personal desktop
recreate the problem by putting in a 4 year old cdrom drive I own. Yet
with the newer Asus CDwriter I've never had a lick of problems. If my
thought is accurate it doesn't mean the hardware is bad per se but
rather that the kernel builders aren't accurately supporting legacy
hardware. Greatest problem is the fact that no author can ever test
beyond the hardware he/she has in front of him.

I've run every distribution from 7.0 to 8.2. Most of them worked very well
right out of the box. 7.2, however, would always trash itself after a couple
of days. I made a couple of tries, but ended up back at 7.1. It's too soon to
tell about 9.0, but we're not off to a real good start here. Your assessment
that hardware variations have a lot to do with it is probably correct. (And
probably the origin of YMMV.)

I have a perfect 8.0 install that has everything working PERFECTLY !

I now have a 9.0 install that seems to also work perfectly. ( seems to

But I couldn't get 8.2 to work on my "crappy hardware" ;-) ;-) ;-)

It's not the hardware it's the OS. Obviously , not ALL Mandrake
versions work with all hardware configurations.

though some may not like this opinion, it seems to be a fact of life.

James, several people have already said supermount's problems
in 9.0 can be blamed on crappy hardware.

I have seen this excuse several times already, but i just
can't buy it. Mandrake 9.0 includes a kernel whose Supermount
does not work in my box. This would be, according to the many
people that say so, my crappy hardware's fault.

But why does it work OK with 8.2, then?

I would be more inclined to say "Mandrake 9's stock
kernel has bugs that arise only on certain kinds of
hardware" more than "it's a hardware related problem",
as the latter gives the idea that the hardware is to blame,
which it is not.

Re your last sentence, yes. Then do "modprobe nvidia".

I got it working from the following advice:
Load drivers
Vi edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
In the Module section,
Remark out Load "glx"
Instead, right under the line Load "dbe", add:
  Load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
In the Driver section,
Replace driver "nv" (or "NVdriver") with "nvidia"
Save file
Run modprobe nvidia

If you are using an AGP card,
In the Screen section add this line:
  Option "NvAgp" "1"
("0" will disable AGP)

Good luck,

umm, not real sure what you're saying, but yeah, I'd put Load "glx" in
the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Actually, this is what my section
looks like:

Section "Module"
Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
Load "extmod"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx" # 3D layer
EndSection

> Should I change the
> XF86CONFIG-4 Module section and the etc/module file to nvidia?

yes. :)

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

I mentioned putting /sbin/modprobe nvidia in your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
file cause seems like /etc/modules.conf gets read too soon or too
late or something. Mine seems to not load the module. But you could
just put nvidia in your /etc/modules file instead of rc.modules...
either will work. As long as you get that module loaded before
trying to startx. I like to have all three elements present:
correct entries in XF86Config-4, device & modules in
/etc/modules.conf and some place that loads it (rc.modules. or
/etc/modules).

Hello:
This is what is confusing me. I have done recommended install from the
Mandrake DVD. This installed the NVIDIA drivers for 1.0-3123.1 mdk from the
DVD. In my etc/modules it loads the NVdriver, in etc/X11/XF86Config-4 under

section is Driver "nvidia". When I boot I see the NVIDIA start logo. just

What I do not understand is if etc/modules should say nvidia and not NVdriver
and the XF86Config-4 Module should say Load "GLX" and it points to the
libglx.so file why does it appear to work and yet not work when the new rpms

[expert] Error building NVIDIA rpm

2002-12-15 Thread Toshiro
I've downloaded the latest NVIDIA source rpms, I successfully built the GLX
rpm, but when I try to build the NVIDIA kernel rpm, I get an error (see the
full message below); it seems that is looking for some linux/autoconf.h that
it didn't find. Of course the file I downloaded is OK (same checksum as
advertised).

Anybody got any idea?

related to hardware, not a generality (BTW the other boxes I've put

Many downloaders have a resume option which lets you continue
downloadong where you left off at the end of the last session.

Use rsync to download over your 56KB link, but make sure the --partial
option is set.

You have been around here long enough to be aware of our

The web site also contains an example of using cron to automatically

double check your Config-4 file that it has nvidia as the driver under
device section and Load "GLX" under module section. Then: modprobe
nvidia (the driver has changed from NVdriver to nvidia). And try to
startx. If it works, put: /sbin/modprobe nvidia in your

Yes, you are right, 9.0 totally F***ed up Supermount, even for me (I disable
it on all vanilla 9.0 installs). It was broken on every install I tried (probably
5 or so, including and especially laptops). In the current cooker kernel,
Supermount seems to work flawlessly for me on my home box. It also works
on my fathers box and he's running the latest cooker too. I can't vouch for
it across the board but it seems to have been addressed by now and I haven't
heard much about it on the Cooker List (in itself a good sign). As for USB
support, I can't comment, perhaps the list can give more insight here...

I've deleted the offending entry in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg which seems to have solved

When a source is properly configured, there are three files per source.
If the souce is called "Main", then there will be:
  hdlist.Main.cz
  list.Main
  synthesis.hdlist.Main.cz

Willing to bet that you did the update process during the install, but
it didn't succeed all the way.

1) Look in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf. Is there a defined source for "Update
for Mandrake Linux 9.0 (ftp1u)"?
2) If yes, urpmi.update -a should have fixed it.
3) Since you said it didn't, most likely that source is not defined in

Don't use Sender: :) Mandrake has an internal news-server which the
lists are gateway'd to and from. If it is posted to the news-server,
the Sender will be set to [EMAIL PROTECTED] by the gateway program
and Sympa (apparently) doesn't rewrite it. Filter on "X-Loop:.expert@"

Again, don't filter on Sender. Filter on X-Loop or X-BeenThere. Those
are the only two that are reliable.

As I understood it (and experienced it) some people were having no problems

directly works. This would appear to indicate a defect in the spec (or
other?) rpm-specific config.

Walt,

I just upgraded to Evolution 1.2.1, and syncing is working again and my

Ok, I offer 2 possible solutions for you then. Download the 9.0 ISO's for
free (or have them burned to CD by someone you know who already has them)
and upgrade the lot (or just upgrade KDE by adding the 3 9.0 CD's as sources
in URPMI). Download the (Cooker) KDE RPM's via RPMdrake, and then satisfy
the dependencies the same way. I just don't understand why you can't do the
downloads (for free) that you need instead of going through the hassle of
compiling something that requires vastly different libs etc. than the system
you are currently running. Just my .0002c worth.

Hello,

I cannot use the prebuilts because I am not running MDK 9.0. I am still using
8.2 so I must rebuild for my system. It seems rather ridiculous for me to
shell out for 9.0 just so I can have a working KDE 3 but have to go back to
the 8.2 kernel in order to retain functionality (usb, supermount). I tried
the 9.0 kernel for a while (built like all my kernels for years) and it was
too borked for me to tolerate it so I went back to the 2.4.18 kernel. It
seems more reasonable to stick with 8.2 until 9.1 comes out with a,
presumably, bug-fixed kernel. Thus, I must build kde 3 myself as the
prebuilts are based on the wrong glibc.

I ran into a similar problem with RedHat 8.0 and Samba (couldn't unmount
a share as a user, even though I had mounted the share as the same
user), my solution was to (as root):
# chmod +s /usr/bin/smbumount

I would think your solution would be to check /bin/mount and
/bin/umount, and try the same thing on umount.

This is not a secure solution, but it works on my (single-user) laptop.

yeah, I guess I could try that..

might be easier to just reinstall cups and postfix.. my main reason is I
want it to fix the /etc/alternative links..

They are all now pointing where they should be thanks to everyones help,,
but the eventual targets are missing..

since they all seem to relate to cups and postfix.. maybe just reinstalling
them would fix things..

FWIW i've had problems with earlier Mdks
when i didn't install all the dox at the start.
try doing an "update" partial installation, simply selecting
"documentation".
otherwise, you'll probably have to re-install, but more carefully.
generally, Mandrake staff seem to test the full basic installation thoro'ly,
but cannot as humans be expected to check every permutation of
part-installs.

[expert] mldonkey: shorewall and port

2002-12-15 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Dear friends,

I am using mldonkey to download some files, but if I have the firewall
activated (allowed ssh and ftp) I can't download anything. Without firewall
it is possible download, but I would like have the firewall activated and
opened the ports for ssh (22), ftp (21) and for mldonkey (???).

Does anyone know which port uses mldonkey? how can I configure the shorewall
to allow mldonkey run without disable the firewall?

Thanks so much in advance

Re: [expert] Nvidia driver chaos! HEAVENS!!!

2002-12-15 Thread SainTiss
Hmm, I know it sounds odd, but when I minimize the glxgears window, I
get around 4500fps, and if I don't minimize it, I only get 650fps!

How is this possible?

Thanks

Hans

Re: [expert] hdc lost interrupt

Hey guys, I'm having a strange problem I'm hoping someone else has run into.

I'm trying to install MNF onto an AMD 350 system. One HD on the primary
channel and one CDROM on the secondary. I've also tried it with the HD and
CDROM both on the primary and the secondary disabled. The first way, it gets
to the thank you screen (starting to install). In TTY4 I see that HDC lost
interrupt over and over. When both are on the same primary channel I get HDA
interrupt lost. That is it. I can't get past this.

It sure seems hardware, since I was unable to install openbsd. I can't figure
out what is wrong here. Help!

I have the same problem with an old 486.

the obvious thing to try is the physical controls on your monitor:
have a look at your monitor manual for details.

FWIW i've had problems with earlier Mdks
when i didn't install all the dox at the start.
try doing an "update" partial installation, simply selecting "documentation".
otherwise, you'll probably have to re-install, but more carefully.
generally, Mandrake staff seem to test the full basic installation thoro'ly,
but cannot as humans be expected to check every permutation of part-installs.
