James,
 I have mozilla 1.3.1-4.1mdk and netscape 7.0-2tex on this machine,and I
have the same problem on a redhat box and a suse box, with different
versions of mozilla, galeon doesn't have the problem on this mandrake
box, but does on the others.I've seen this happen before on a windows
box on a different site. Never could figure out how it happens.

Thanks very much for your answer. Unfortunately I was unable to find it in

Would you happen to have a closer reference?

The size of the monitor does not necessarily have anything to do with
the resolution. My first 14" bought in 1992 went right up to 1024x768
and even now I have a tiny 9" at home which happily does 800x600
(beautiful little monitor). Maybe you can look around for a second
hand one of the right size with a better reolution?

Other than that I do actually agree, that much is over the top at the
moment - for many things, there is no reason to force a high
resolution.

Aha, I wasn`t aware of that. I thought it was all proportional and I can`t
accomodate a larger box between my keyboard and the wall.

Thanks all, I found the solution. It turns out that the tmdns stuff that
Mandrake loads for zeroconf is the cause of the rewrite. I removed it and
now everything is working fine.

First thing that I did when I had problems was update the BIOS. No, I can
clearly see the error where Linux is trying to load the 366 hpt driver when
it detects the controller. I did a lot of reading and everyone mentioned
problems with the hpt driver included in the 24 kernel. Alan Cox did a patch
and put it out but it hasn't been implemented in the stock kernel.

I can get past the kernel panic by recompiling with the actual highpoint
driver from highpoint tech, only problem is it was unable to see the one
drive that I hooked up to it. Could be my fault though, the drive wasn't on
that controller when I installed and I may need to do something further. It
just wasn't worth the effort of pursueing since I only have 4 ide devices
hooked up currently and they all fit on the primary ide controller channels.

I would the thrilled if it was something easy but after spending 5+ days
trying to get it to work, constantly moving drives to different controllers
and having to recompile the kernel, I am not sure that there is enough value
in getting it to work to justify the time.

Obviously, I am not an expert with any of this, just a squirrel trying to get

It is also possible that this is all a combination of other stuff. When I
first loaded up Mandrake, it was a brand new install after I just purchased
my new system with the Dragon KT400 Ultra Platinum MB installed. First I had
major problems because I had a 128MB video card along with 1024MB of RAM.
Mandrake 9.1 has major problems trying to boot from the boot disk if you have
more than 1024 of RAM and a video card with more than 32 mb of memory.

Couple those problems with the APIC issues and ACPI as well and simply getting
a stable install was a major undertaking for me. At this point, with what I
know now, I could probably do a much better install and perhaps get the RAID
stuff working (although I am pretty sure that 9.1 does have problems with
hpt372, at least, I am not the only one having those problems according to
the forums), but I would have to go back and reinstall all the software and
at this point it is simply not worth the effort. Perhaps when 9.2 comes out.

[expert] XMMS crashing

2003-08-20 Thread Guy Van Sanden
Hi guys

I have this weird problem with XMMS.
It crashes on one of my PC's with specific mp3 files, which is identical
in installation to the other one. No special message is given.

The system runs Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1.3tex.
Packages installed (on both systems) are:
xmms-1.2.7-18mdk
mpg123-0.59r-17.1mdk
arts-1.1.3-1tex
xmms-arts-0.4-8mdk

mpg123 on that system plays them fine, but says (on both systems):
Playing MPEG stream from Ronan Keating - InThisLife.foutemp3 ...
Junk at the beginning 49443303
MPEG 1.0 layer III, 128 kbit/s, 44100 Hz stereo

A lot of my MP3 files have this problem, but they have always played
fine (they even worked on that sytem on Mandrake 9.0, and work fine with
noatun).

Any ideas on what the problem is?

Thanks

Guy

The only way that I know of to do this is to bring the computer up in Single
User mode and reset root password from there. You should be able to do that
by putting options in Lilo at boot to bring up Linux in single user mode.

If you have password protected Lilo, I am not sure that you can reset the root
password without some type of reinstall.

Re: [expert] 2.4.21-0.25 hates my thinkpad

2003-08-20 Thread Praedor Tempus
I actually have now tried and failed to build
kernel-2.4.22-0.6mdk (from cooker). I upgraded
kernel-utils (built from source rpm so it would be
cool with MDK 9.1) and then tried building the kernel.
No go. First off, xconfig doesn't work so I had to
go with menuconfig (no problem with 2.4.21-0.13mdk).
It built just fine but when installing the kernel
(make install) it failed to find a bzImage and didn't
install a vmlinuz to go with the build. No amount of
tinkering/manual file play would get around this. I
haven't yet tried (again) to go to 2.4.21-0.25mdk via
your method. At this point, I give up and will, I
suppose, wait for 9.2 and HOPE that the kernel is all
cool and functional on my laptop.

Just a quick note on this.. I find it better to run the command
"service tmdns stop" then "chkconfig --del tmdns" as if tmdns was
removed with "rpm -e" it gets installed and enabled again, when one
configures their network with drakconf.. It's just better to switch it
off.. When it is just switched off, drakconf does not re-enabled it.

One thing I never worked out why did mandrake go for Zeroconf stuff when
no-one knows what it is..I certainly did not make any of it work,
and if anything all it does is make a mess of the resolv.conf file..

Cheers
Mark

When you installed your re-built rpm you should have gotten a conflict
notice.
The kernel-utils rpm is only needed if you are running cooker or 1 of
the 9.2 betas.
In 9.1 or earlier all the necessary files are still included in the
initscripts rpm.

The only way that I know of to do this is to bring the computer up in Single

User mode and reset root password from there. You should be able to do that

by putting options in Lilo at boot to bring up Linux in single user mode.

If you have password protected Lilo, I am not sure that you can reset the
root
password without some type of reinstall.

What it is, is a re-implementation of Novel Network. And is supposed to
be (according the the website I was directed to by someone) in very
alpha form. As for the why. After watching the list on 9.1, I got the
feeling that they wanted to. Nothing more. I was an advocate of making
it "optional" not mandatory but lost out. I've put it in my urpmi skip
list in fact.

I did just remove the service. Funny thing is, I disabled some other device
from zeroconf because of an earlier problem. I just never noticed the
problems from tmdns because all the other network stuff is more forgiving of
a bad nameserver in the file.

2. Accept cookies from a 3rd party server.

A couple things you can try:

1) Update xmms. One version had some problems that may be related.

2) Use a different decoder and convert the MP3 to wav. Then re-code back
to MP3. This will update the header.

3) Delete (or move) your .xmms directory.

No, I don't have non 9.1 Sources listed. Besides the Installation CDs,

update_source

{
 hdlist: hdlist.distrib_mirrors.secsup.org_i586_9.1.cz
 with_hdlist: ../base/hdlist.cz
}

Besides that, the original Error was about the following:

The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:
bind-9.2.2-1mdk (due to conflicts with bind)
caching-nameserver-9.0-2mdk (due to unsatisfied bind >= 9.2.0-0.a3.2mdk)
I still think that this is a Problem with the recognition of Versioning
within URPMI. Not my selected Sources for URPMI.

Anyone else care to comment? I think that the improvements in urpmi are
Great, but I also think that there is another problem which needs to be
resolved here.

I'll second this. I sure would like to know what it is good for. It
must be good for something.

In all fairness, I believe a number of those sites are merely being
protected by FreeBSD proxies will the actual site is W2K(3)/IIS. I
guess that does go to show that even some people at Microsoft have the
common sense not to attempt to use Windows a proxy/bastion host OS.

This is an uptime report for the enitre Microsoft netblock, they sure
are using a lot of Linux and FreeBSD (not to mention moving a lot of
their sites to akamai on Linux).
But the funniest part are the average and maximum uptimes.
Linux shows uptimes arround 300-350, while the windows guru's seem
unable to keep their systems up for the same amount. They peek at
arround 150!

Well like anyone who can hire the very best business managers, Bill &
co. can see the hand writing on the wall. This is why that same group
of folks owns huge shares in open source companies like RedHat. Not
because they want to shut these companies down but rather because they
recognize that Windows market dominence wont last forever. It can't
simply because thier business model of selling media liscences will
eventually be out of date i.e. static media (such as any sort of
recording) becomes so cheap to manipulate and transmit over time that it
becomes a loseing battle. Microsoft knows this which is why they
started really working hard to diversify thier assets. I woudn't be
surprised at all to evenually see an open source verison of Windows or
to see them adopt Linux in the next 10-15 years.

The Error is the reason I thought you might have a non 9.1 source.

The Only reason which would require urpmi to remove bind-9.2.2-1mdk
would be that you are requesting it to install Another pkg which either
'provides' bind or 'requires' a 2nd pkg which does so, but in either
case said pkg conflicts with the currently installed bind-9.2.2-1mdk.

You do not have to actually install them, but answer y rather than n to
the removal and then post the listing of the pkgs which will be
installed.

[expert] Mandrake RULE involvement Was: Worried about resolution...

I really would like to see Mandrake get involved with the RULE (Run
Up-to-date Linux Everywhere ) poject.
It would also really click with the CLIC project. ;-) [place wince
here] One of the bigest problems we had with our cluster was with trying
to use out-of-date hardware with modern software. RULE is a RedHat
based project to eliminate this problem.

Hmm, for some reason I was thinking it was supposed to be the beginnings of
something like what the Mac uses - you know, where you walk into an room with
a wireless Mac laptop and it auto finds every other Mac in the room and they
all recognize and configure with each other.

Might be wrong though - just got off a 12 hour shift.

Anne, I d/l'ed those files and installed them (removed ye "olde" versions
first). Gnomemeeting now works here, at least it does give me a picture.

IF I run it as root. If I run it from my normal user account I get the same
error message that you and I ran into before. It says that it can't read
/dev/video0.

I su'ered, changed the permissions to 777 (yeah I know - just temporarily to
see if I could get it to work), group and owner to my normal user account,
and stillit won't let my normal user access video0. I went into userdrake
and added every group I could find/think of that might affect this, still no
go.

So...I'm stumped. I don't want to run any app as root that I don't have to,
especially considering it would be connected online.

You can try it there - maybe it will work for you? If so, please tell me what

ls -al /dev/video0

shows for you.

Thanks!

[expert] Switching from Apache2 to apache_mod_perl-1.3.27

I've not been able to successfully receive a subscription from the

I have both the Apache2 and apache-mod_perl-1.3.27_1.27-7mdk packages
installed. I need to run the apache_mod_perl server instead of
apache2. Due to prerequisites, can I easily switch from the apache2 to
the apache-mod_perl ? I would prefer to not be forced to remove the
apache2 rpms. Is there a simple solution to this?

[expert] Font and icon problems

2003-08-20 Thread James Conner
I just installed MDK 9.1 on a friend's system and the fonts and icons have a
shadow to the right. This is in KDM, KDE, and GNOME and possibly more. This
was very noticiable right after install. I updated freetype2 from texstar's
site and installed the msfonts from there as well as imported all the fonts
from the Win2000 dual boot side(on another hard drive). I installed nvidia's
latest drivers(with success). I've searched mandrakes mailing list archives,
the forum, nvidia's forum, google and anything else I could think of. It
makes it very hard to read anything and a real strain on the eyes. I'm
unsure of what to do or look at next. This system had run MDK 9.0 before
just fine. I did a screenshot with KSnapshot and it shows up fine on my
computer. MDK 9.1 did detect the monitor and set the resolution at 1024x768
with 24 bit color on install. The monitor is a Dell(Samsung) 17", unsure of
the model right now. I could get it if needed. Any ideas are appreciated.
