Yes, I know that. But you could click on an RPM in Mdk 9.0, and it just downloaded. In
9.1 this is no longer possible, is this a bug ? Or was it done intentional.

I didn't have this problem in 9.0, but when I installed 9.1 this problem also arose
here. I fixed it by deleting the rpnp.so link from the mozilla plugin directory
(/usr/lib/mozilla-1.3/plugins/rpnp.so).

You specify only the dir in the script, but the files are a wildcard. This only works
on a local machine, not with a url. I've tried and I get something like:

Verifying "rpm1.rpm rpm2.rpm rpm3.rpm rpm4.rpm rpm5.rpm  etc. etc."

All rpms in the remote server are treated as if they were one file.

Lately I had very many files missing after a filesystem check of my root partition. I
executed these commands like on your page:

rpm -Va --nodeps --nomd5 --noscripts | grep missing > missing_files.list
urpmf [filename]

It took for hours to reinstall all corrupted packages from the CD's, so I've come up
with a script:

--
#!/bin/bash

RPM_DIR="/mnt/cdrom2/Mandrake/RPMS"

for FILE in ${RPM_DIR}*/*.rpm ; do

RPM=`rpm -qp --qf "%{NAME} " ${FILE}`

echo -e "Verifying \"${RPM}\" ..."

if rpm -V --nodeps --nomd5 ${RPM} | grep "missing  " ; then

echo -e "\nReinstall \"${RPM}\" ? [Enter/y/n]:"
read ANSWER

if [ "${ANSWER}" != "n" ]; then

RPM=`rpm -q ${RPM}`
rpm -Uvh --force ${RPM_DIR}*/${RPM}*
echo -e "\n"

fi

fi

done

exit 0
-

This will check all RPMS on the CD's (or in any other folder you specify), and ask to
install them.

[expert] Characters messed up in 9.1 / Unable to shutdown.

2003-06-05 Thread Maxim Heijndijk
Hi, I just did a clean install of 9.1.

1: Language is Dutch/Netherlands. When I start manpages or ncurses based apps or type
characters with umlauts etc. I get the wrong (non-ascii ?) characters. Its almost
impossible to work with mc from the command line this way.

2: I cannot shutdown the box, when I do CTRL+ALT+DEL I get these characters on the
console: ";2R". When I tap enter I get an error message from bash and the prompt
appears.

3. I did a upgrade of 9.1 over 9.1 to see if this would fix things (this worked for me
in the past with other issues I had with 9.0). The "upgrade" automatically installed
hdparm and when I rebooted the boot process hung on hdparm for about 5 minutes. After
login I got lots of errors about "command not found" and I discovered that many files
in "/usr/bin" had disappeared. I fixed this by reinstalling a lot of RPMS manually.

Can anyone help me to fix 1 & 2, so I can go on with building RPMS ?

If you rebuild your kernel on 9.0 the modules end up in
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdkcustom. When you install the Nvidia driver it ends up in
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk and it does not get loaded automatically anymore.

I don't use mcc. It crashes at startup. Only when i do "su -c mcc" or "kdesu mcc" or
"sudo mcc" it will start normally. I posted this to cooker and they said I had to use
drakconf from updated, but that did not solve the problem. Look in the Cooker archives

This is a nuisance. Also, you have to give the root passwd for installing,
uninstalling, updating, or managing the sources. That's giving your passwd 4 times for
one program. What's that good for ?

There is a GUI program called paloma that uses MySQL to keep a catalog of your CD's
MP3's, wav-files, and ogg's. You can rip and encode, and search on songname, album
title, artist and lots more. You can also use it as a player. I have an RPM for 8.2 of
it on my website, and I have an RPM for 9.0 (not on my site) that requires some libs
for 8.2 though (libsig++, libgdkmm), because it won't build with the libs from 9.0. If
you're interested I can send you the 9.0 RPM.

http://paloma.sourceforge.net/
http://home.wanadoo.nl/cchq/conmen/rpms.html#paloma

You can also try 'gtktalog' which is simpler and easier to get started with, yet very
efficient. I use it to maintain a database of mp3/ogg CD's. Maybe it could be used for
cataloging audio CD's also.

I created a new user account, without the config files, but the same problem arose.
There's nothing in the logs, xsession-errors looks like this:

I had a similar problem with 7.2 and 8.0. It had something to do with
'md-devices' compiled into the default kernel. If I remember correctly I could
unload a module called md.o (rmmod md.o) and then the problem would go away.
After I recompiled my kernel everything worked fine, but I don't exactly know which
kernel-compile option you have to disable.

One thing to watch out for is that make mrproper deletes the

kernel. Back this file up before doing 'make mrproper'.

You should edit fstab, not mtab, and the option is 'user' not 'users'.

Like:

Diacritical characters are a problem in Linux I guess. I have tried to
get it working in the console and in Midnight Commander, but I didn't
find a workable solution yet. There is information on this subject in
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO.html
Please let us know if you get it working.

When I try to run GLX based applications without Mesa (GL) installed I
get this same error:

It means the Mesa (GL) libraries cannot be found..

If you close those ports you might end up with a non-functional system.

The dangerous open ports are telnet and ftp. If you do not need a
telnet or ftp server, deinstall them or comment them out in
/etc/(x)inetd.conf. If you need telnet a server replace it by sshd.

Another option would be :

http://home.wanadoo.nl/cchq/conmen/RPMS/i586/clockspeed-0.62-1.i586.rpm

This program can synchronize and adjust the system clock with a remote

[expert] Installer creates extended partition on hda2.

2001-07-08 Thread Maxim Heijndijk

I used to be able to mount my ext2 partitions from Windows.
The past half year I tried reiserfs, which gave me problems, so I'm
back to ext2 again. However, I cannot mount my ext2 partitions from
Windoze anymore.

This is the output of fdisk -l /dev/hda :

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 784 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device BootStart   EndBlocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   * 1   196   1574338+   6  FAT16
/dev/hda2   197   784   4723110   85  Linux extended
/dev/hda5   197   392   1574338+  83  Linux
/dev/hda6   393   405104391   82  Linux swap
/dev/hda7   406   758   2835441   83  Linux
/dev/hda8   759   784208813+  83  Linux

It seems that the Mandrake-8.0 Installer (diskdrake) created an extended
partition on hda2. Shouldnt that be hda5 ? I thought hda1-4 could only
be primary partitions. Is there a way to change this without losing my data ?

Well, i'm back to ext2 also. An added advantage:
I can mount my linux partitions from Windoze 95. Linux still does not
print graphics very well, and audio editing is a nightmare ! So I still

I have had problems with reiserfs on LM-7.2. I was testing my
X-Configuration and as a consequense my system froze for a number of
times. I then had to reset my computer, and later I noticed that some
files could not be found by various programs, but they were visible
from within mc. I then had a small rescue partition from where I
managed to repair the corrupted filesytem. I could then access all
files again.

I asked a question on this mailinglist about Xlibs that could not be
found when compiling programs (this time LM-8.0). This turns out to be
the same problem.I was testing my Quakeworld GL RPM, and the computer
froze up, had to do a hard reset etc,etc. I had not changed anything
in my systems configuration, did not edit makefiles, did not uninstall
packages, but when I tried to compile, the Xlibs suddenly could not be
found by the linker. But ldconfig -v gave me this:

/usr/X11R6/lib:
libSM.so.6 -> libSM.so.6.0
libdps.so.1 -> libdps.so.1.0
libXrender.so.1 -> libXrender.so.1.0

libXbae.so.4 -> libXbae.so.4.0.8
libXi.so.6 -> libXi.so.6.0
libPEX5.so.6 -> libPEX5.so.6.0
libpsres.so.1 -> libpsres.so.1.0

libXaw.so.7 -> libXaw.so.7.0
libXaw.so.6 -> libXaw.so.6.1
libXIE.so.6 -> libXIE.so.6.0
libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.3
libxrx.so.6 -> libxrx.so.6.3
libXpm.so.4 -> libXpm.so.4.11
libXaw3d.so.7 -> libXaw3d.so.7.0
libforms.so.0.88 -> libforms.so.0.88
libglut.so.3 -> libglut.so.3.7.0

libGL.so.1 -> libGLwrapper.so.0.1.4
libXlt.so.0 -> libXlt.so.0.8.0
libXmu.so.6 -> libXmu.so.6.2

This time I had no rescue partition because LM-8.0 wouldn't install on
a 150 MB partition :-(. So I was asking for a reiserfs-rescue flop via
this mailing list. The MDK-Install CD worked. I did a

'reiserfsck --check /dev/hda5' which reported:

free block count 67300 mismatches with a correct one 69489.
on-disk bitmap does not match to the correct one. 589 bytes differ

Then I did:
'reiserfsck --rebuild-sb /dev/hda5'
'reiserfsck --rebuild-tree /dev/hda5'

It froze on the 2nd pass from --rebuild-tree at about 60%.
After that I had no root partition anymore. I never encountered these
problems when using ext2fs (been using Linux for 2 and a half years now).

So, I think that people who have to shutdown, reboot and reset a lot
(desktop users) should refrain from using reiserfs and just stick to
ext2fs. I don't know about XFS though, I never used it.

I don't know what 'default' and 'notail' mounts are.

/usr/X11R6/lib:
libSM.so.6 -> libSM.so.6.0
libdps.so.1 -> libdps.so.1.0
libXrender.so.1 -> libXrender.so.1.0
libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.2
libGLU.so.1 -> libGLU.so.1.2.030401
libXbae.so.4 -> libXbae.so.4.0.8
libXi.so.6 -> libXi.so.6.0
libPEX5.so.6 -> libPEX5.so.6.0
libpsres.so.1 -> libpsres.so.1.0
libdpstk.so.1 -> libdpstk.so.1.0
libXaw.so.7 -> libXaw.so.7.0
libXaw.so.6 -> libXaw.so.6.1
libXIE.so.6 -> libXIE.so.6.0
libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.3
libxrx.so.6 -> libxrx.so.6.3
libXpm.so.4 -> libXpm.so.4.11
libXaw3d.so.7 -> libXaw3d.so.7.0
libforms.so.0.88 -> libforms.so.0.88
libglut.so.3 -> libglut.so.3.7.0
libXext.so.6 -> libXext.so.6.4
libXft.so.1 -> libXft.so.1.0
libICE.so.6 -> libICE.so.6.3
libXtst.so.6 -> libXtst.so.6.1
libXt.so.6 -> libXt.so.6.0
libOSMesa.so.3 -> libOSMesa.so.3.3
libfont.so.1 -> libfont.so.1.3
libXp.so.6 -> libXp.so.6.2
libGL.so.1 -> libGLwrapper.so.0.1.4
libXlt.so.0 -> libXlt.so.0.8.0
libXmu.so.6 -> libXmu.so.6.2

However, Xlibs are installed (I can see them with my own eyes), /usr/X11R6/lib is in

resolv.conf can be found in /etc/ppp/resolv.conf on LM-8.0. If you want it in /etc
just copy it there and disable 'usepeerdns' in /etc/ppp/options.

There seems to be a problem with the supermount options in fstab, I have had
continuous problems with that.
Currently I have these lines that work (after a lot of experimenting) in fstab.

/mnt/cdrom  /mnt/cdrom  supermount  fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/sr0,rw,user,exec 0 0
/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount  fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/sr1,rw,user,exec 0 0

Except, since LM 8.0, I cannot read links from cdroms anymore.
With the option 'unhide', I can read links, but then I have to mount without
supermount.

Maybe this has something to do with your problem also. I remember getting the same
error messages.

Go to http://go.to/conmen (shamelessly plugging my own page). At the RPMS page you
will find a link to the homepage of gShield, from there you will find links to lots of

The source that comes with LM-8.0 is not clean. Before you do anything else, do a
