[expert] An observation about Winex 3

2003-05-28 Thread Patrick Mayer
Good day everyone,

After getting my hand on the new version of Winex 3, I have observed that it
is much slower than it's predecessor, especially when run on Mandrake 9.1.

On remedy to this is not to use the pre-built RPM and compile from CVS
instead: I saw a TWO-FOLD increase in display performance afterwards. It is
really worth it, even if there were some minor problems associated the
compilation (mostly library dependencies that were easily soled using urpmi
(tm)).

One last small problem that I had to solve was that Winex whined about being
unable to find the libntdll.so library. A quick search provided it's
location: /usr/local/lib, which was not added to /etc/ld.so.conf when doing
the "make install". Manual modification of the file was therefore required,
followed by ldconfig. Problem solved :)

Time to get back to my Panzer General 2 campaign ;)

[expert] NVIDIA Drivers RPM: Solution!

2003-03-28 Thread Patrick Mayer
Hi all,

I've just completed the installation of Mandrake 9.1. I've met a few
roadblocks in the process but still managed to get it done properly.

1st roadblock: Sound did not seem to work in KDE.
Solution: ALSA does not work on my machine for some reason. This is odd since
everything was OK in RC2. Anyway, switching back to OSS solved my problem.

Most importantly:

2nd roadblock: NVIDIA driver installation.

The RPMS provided through MDK club work but installation is not completed
properly:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 must still be edited manually to replace Driver "nv" by
Driver "nvidia"... Is this such a big issue to fix? XFdrake would simply not
be able to change it to the new drivers...

Anyway, once that was taken care of, a second problem arose: glxgears would
simply restart X. It turns out that XFree 4.3 is setup to load libglx.a when
asked to do so in the config file.

The NVIDIA GLX RPM provides libglx.so instead. The solution to my
problem was therefore to rename libglx.a to libglx.a.org and create a new
link between libglx.a and ligblx.so.

This is done in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/

I know that some people have faced the same problem in the past but it never
hurts to repeat a solution! I hope that they'll fix this when I get my
shrink-wrapped pack...

Patrick

In France, lots of schools have received letters from Microsoft in june
2001 (or 2002?).
Public schools don't have a lot of money so they didn't pay anything.
Now there are national administration and educational services that
develop Linux distributions for educational purposes.
For french reader : www.atica.gouv.fr (a Prime Minister's service).

[expert] Scripts or software to add many new users

2002-11-14 Thread Patrick Atlas

Hello,

We are managing hundred of users on a network based on Netscape Exchange
Server (mail, news and web).
In a few weeks, we would like to change to a linux server (Mandrake of
course!)
As we don't want to create by hand each existing user, is there a script
or a software that will automatically:

-create a new account (possibly from a list of existing
logins/passwords)
-apply the new user to adequate groups
-create a file with his login as name
-create a virtual host to his file in the apache configuration
-apply a DocRoot in proftp configuration
-create a user and his database with his login/password in mysql
-copy a phpmyadmin with adequate configuration
-and few other little things...

Any ideas?

Thanks

[expert] PPC installation problems with GeForce Video Card

2002-11-05 Thread Patrick, Robert W (CAP, CORP)

If this is not the correct list to post
this request to, I apologize J  and could someone redirect me?

Does anyone have advice on installing Mandrake 8.2PPC on a
dual 1Ghz Mac?

I have had zero success with installing and using Linux with
this system.

The system is a Dual 1Ghz Apple (Quicksilver, I think)

Video card is a Nvidia GeForce4 MX

And it uses the USB sound system and the sound sticks from
Harmon Kardon.

Also the flat panel display.

My two biggest problems that I can as yet identify are:

Bootstrap/ patitioning

And video support.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! J

Thanks to all in advance.

P.S.  My goal
would be to have a Linux only MAC.
Not Dual boot… is that possible?  Or must I have a Mac partition first?

Re: [expert] trouble with wireless card

2002-11-03 Thread Patrick Atlas
Did you follow Simon's indications?
After the hermes.conf file is copied in /etc/pcmcia, try to launch Mandrake
Control Center, choose Network and Internet then connexion.
Use the assistant to configure the eth0 and choose orinoco (Prism II).
I think that will configure the NETGEAR wireless.

Re: [expert] trouble with wireless card

2002-11-01 Thread Patrick Atlas
Thanks Simon, I saved my souls... and my wireless connection.
I have point-by-point followed your indications and now my Netgear MA401
PCMCIA wireless card is working fine on my notepad.

Some points to fix, yet:

It seems that the
WIRELESS_ESSID
WIRELESS_ENC_KEY
options are erased after reinitialization of the PCMCIA or the SERVICES, in
the ifcfg-ethX file.
Any idea?

So I need to write the END_KEY.
The KEY must be written in hexadecimal or ASCII?

[expert] Warning: supermount problem

2002-10-03 Thread Patrick Mayer

I have installed Mandrake 9.0 last week and I have been running into problems
with both of my cdrom players. The symptoms are as follow:

-Mounting the cdrom automatically works well.
-ls gives the files list as it should.
-copying all of the files present on the CD gives the following result:
The first file copies without problem, in the case of a multifile CD.
The following files seem to disappear from the CD, giving out a message like
"file not found", although it was listed the fisrt time ls was used.
- subsequent ls will list the first file and return errors for the next ones.

On a CD containing a large tar file (for example), the file is listed
correctly BUT copying this file to a hard disk corrupts its.

I have disabled the supermount feature (in mtab and fstab) and reconfigured
the cdrom players to be mounted manually.

All of the previous symptoms have disapeared:
-All files are now accesible.
-No more corruption occurs.

It is quite strange that such a bug was not picked up before today... Although
my hardware might be flakey since that last thunderstorm ;)

The cure to my problem was to disable supermount. Anyone encountering that
type of problem should do likewise until this issue has been fixed...

What's the netmask of the nic on the LAN side? If its 255.255.255.0 it will
not work. Change it to 255.255.0.0 and you should be set.

[expert] Quake 3 arena and Mandrake 8.1

Following my first post about the subject:

I have managed to make it work, although not in full screen mode. Sound works

Only the skirmish mode works properly. Whenever I try to launch a full game,

starts (just before moving).

So, basically, it just about works but not quite.

Setup is as follows:
Mandrake 8.1

Xfree 4.1.0 in 1024x768 x 16bpp
Matrox G400, 16mb ram

Anybody has some advice about this?

Thanks!

DRI runs well with the games packaged with MDK 8.1.

However, Quake 3 Arena crashes just before it gets in play mode.
The same goes with Descent 3.
This crashes X but does not lock up th emachine: I can still telnet and
shutdown.

Both programs have been patched to their latest version.

Has anybody been able to make hose two games runwith Mdk 8.1, using similar

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

[expert] Tuning for large number of processes

2001-10-04 Thread Patrick warn

We run a database system that leaves a large number of connections to the
database open, but inactive most of the time. Since the database is of the
classic server variety, each database connection spawns a new copy of the
database. We have a four CPU Dell server with four GB of RAM.

My problem is that the load on the computer is often well above 6, sometimes
it gets up to 12, at which point even the keyboard on the consol is
painfully slow. Looking at the cpu usage and memory usage, I am surprised to
find that they are not that high. However there seems to be a direct
correlation between the number of processes (our database connections) and
the load.

My question: Is there something special that needs to be done to configure
Mandrake or the kernel to handle large numbers (400+) of processes?

   Wondering what it all means,
 Pat

[expert] Promise ATA100 installation ORDEAL

2001-05-30 Thread Patrick Mayer

Hi everyone,

This is an account of my troubles when installing Mandrake 8.0. As
you'll see, strange things happend when new kernel versions arrive...

My setup is as follows:

PIII 800 on a ASUS P3B-F (I know, it should not support a processor with
a 133mhz front bus speed but strangely enough, it works like a charm ;)
256 meg (PC133)
30 Gig WD hard drive.
Promise ATA-100 drive controller: seen as scsi controller by the bios,
used to be recognized as /dev/hde in Madnrake 7.2)
2 cd-rom (writer and reader) on Secondary ide controller (/dev/hdc &
/dev/hdd)
Primary IDE channel is disabled, thus leaving IRQ 14 free for the
Promise controller.

The rest is not relevant and you'll soon see why:

The installation went well and smoothly only when I rebooted:

The kernel loaded fine but panicked at the start of the "interactive
setup" part of the boot. It mentionned that it could not find the
/dev/hde6 device
(that's the / partition) That's strange because it just booted from
/dev/hde5 (the /boot partition) so if it could boot from one partition,
it should be
able to locate the next one on the same drive. After a few minutes of
trial and error (lilo: linux root=/dev/hde6), I tried booting with the
floppy created during install. To no avail! Things weren't looking up
when I tried something else...

Let's suppose that the kernel renames /dev/hde to /dev/hda after it has
booted.

The boot got one step further, mentionning that it could not mount
partition /dev/hde6 on / This meant I was on the right track. So, I got
a copy of
Tombsrt (the mini distro on a floppy), disconnected the hard disk and
installed it on the mobo's primary IDE channel and rebooted in tombsrt.
Then, I mounted
the / partition while in tombsrt. I changed the fstab entries to rename
all references about /dev/hde to /dev/hda. Shut down the machine,
reconnected the HD to
the Promise card and rebooted the thing.

It worked, at last...

Now my question is: Why does this version of the kernel (2.4.3 I
believe) remaps devices like this? This does not make any sense!

Just my 2 sense (s)!

Réf. : [expert] problem with usr 56k modem

2001-05-23 Thread Patrick . Bussi

It is very likely that your "old modem" is a true one, that is to say it has a
controller inside and is reachable from the CPU by the simple Hayes set of
commands. Since (about) '96, modems are winmodems and the CPU has to manage them
directly. The CD-ROM delivered by the manufacturers generally do not include any
driver for Linux. Therefore you need to find the appropriate one on the web. I
suggest you have a look at :

http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

or

I have recently bought a external 56k US Robotics modem and
I can't make it work under LM 7.2. It doesn't respond to
any query.
It is not a hardware problem (the thing works almost correctly
under Win95) and not a serial port config problem (If I unplug it
and replace it by my old Olitec, things works immediately
without even having to reboot)

In fact, the programs that I have used (Harddrake, kppp) seems
to not even see that there is a physical device on /dev/ttyS0.

Any idea to help solving this mystery ?

Thanks in advance.

I am almost sure that it is not any more useful to take care about the 1024

second half of a 20GB drive, shared with WIN9x. It ran happily.

I dont think it will be a problem...
except take care that while partitioning ,
the /boot partitioning ,
the cylinder numbering should not exceed 1024..
ofcourse this partitioning logic is a bit old...
thats all...everything else will fit ..well..
may be present boot loaders will take care of
the higher numbersI dont know..
atleast upto 40GB I dont have any problems...

[expert] Using iso image for 8.0

Hi.

Can someone tell me how to get the iso image to work?

I have downloaded it and then wrote it to a cd but I can't get it to
work.

Is there supposed to be some kind of formatting to the iso image that I
am supposed to do before burning the cd?

At the moment I have a cd with:

 mandrake80-inst.iso
 readme.txt
 md5sums

I get the impression that the mandrake80-inst.iso image supposed to be
opened up before I burn it? Kind of like untarring it.

What makes it worse is that I am using windoze to do the download and
it is driving me nuts.

[expert] Install Problems

2001-02-08 Thread Duczyminski, Patrick (P.)

I am not new to installing Mandrake but I've never come across a problem
like this before. While installing I do my filesystem layout pick the
applications I want then it starts to load the software. During the load
the system will just lock. I have no mouse movement, my cdrom stop but my
hard drive light stays on. The system will not come back no matter how long
I wait. I have tried installing a bare bones load but it does the same
thing. To verify it wasn't a hard disk or other problem I've loaded 6.1 and
7.1 and each loads and functions fine, but the 7.2 load will not work. I've
tried running the patch.pl and changing my ides to noautotune but that still
doesn't work. I am at a loss as to what to try next. I've been trying to
load this now for a few days and haven't been successful yet. Any help
would be appreciated.

[expert] SBLIVE! + JOYSTICK = SOLUTION!

2000-12-16 Thread Patrick Mayer

Hi everyone,
After a few days of unsuccessful trials, I've managed to activate the
joystick port on the SBLive! and enable the joystick support in LM7.2.
Here's how I have done it:
-Downloaded kernel 2.2.18
-Compiled it
-Rebooted with the new kernel; There's a catch there: Xfree 4.01 will
not run anymore but it is not needed right now anyway (conflict in
agpgart.o and mga.o module version: they won't load in Xfree 4.01
provided with LM 7.2).
-Downloaded the emu10k1 driver from opensource.creative.com
-Compiled it (without a hitch, at last!)
-Do not "make install" afer compiling...
-cp emu10k1-joy.o /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/
-Reboot with kernel 2.2.17 that came with LM7.2

and then the fun begins:
Once bootup is finished:
insmod emu10k1-joy io=0x200
cat /proc/ioports
You should see the the joystick port at address 0x200.
insmod joystick
insmod joy-analog (or digital, or anything else).

That's it: it worked for me. I hope this helps others!

Now, let's hope that the next version of Mandrake will be more up to
date, driver-wise: the included version of the emu10k1 dates back to
october 1999. No joystick port support was included in that version.

[expert] SBLive!, Mandrake 7.2 and joystick support.

2000-11-27 Thread Patrick Mayer

Basically, here's the problem:
I used to be able to compile the creative driver for the SBLive! This
driver includes support for the joystick port on the card.

In order to use a joy with this card, I had to use the emu10k1-joy
module with a specific io address (insmod soundcore, insmod emu10k1-joy,
insmod emu10k1-joy i0=0x200 then insmod joystick.o and finally, insmod
joy-analog.o) This sequence worked on Mandrake 7.1. (with or without the
joystick.o: can't remember :)

Now, using Mandrake 7.2, I can't compile the creative driver anymore.
I've been able to compile it on a vanilla kernel 2.2.17 but not with the
one supplied with Mdk 7.2. Unfortunately, the vanilla kernel does not
include agpgart module (no problem, I've found it) or the Xfree 4.01
video-card specific module (mga.o in my case, for a Matrox G400). Also,
I can't use the module compiled on the vanilla as it complains about
unresolved symbols when I try to load it on the Mandrake kernel..

Here is my question: is there any way to compile the creative driver
with Mandrake 7.2? If not, where can I find the Xfree 4.01 DRI
video-card module (mga.o) to patch a vanilla kernel 2.2.17?

By the way, hardware acceleration works well on the G400: I've played
with Terminus for a while w/o problem... Except that it's very hard to
pilot with the keyboard :)

So, does anyone have any answers about this? Thanks :)

[expert] Adding joystick support...

2000-11-25 Thread Patrick Mayer

Hello everyone,
I'm using Mandrake 7.2 and have the following problem:
I would like to compile a driver for the SB Live! This driver supports
the joystick port on the SB Live! as well as the remaining functions
already supported by the driver-module bundled with Mdk7.2's kernel
2.2.17-21mdk. Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful after a few hours
trying it.

Not being a programmer, I can only give the output when compiling:

[me@jupiter emu10k1]$ make
grep: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf-.h: No such file or
directory
Makefile:44: /Makefile: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `/Makefile'. Stop.

I've already compiled my kernel a few times, have done make clean, dep,
etc. But I just can't make this work.

Has anybody been able to use it's joystick when plugged in a SB Live!
with Mandrake 7.2? I would love to hear the story if someone has done
it!

TIA!

with the first ip is a system somewhere in the internet, the second IP
the system i connect to at my ISP.

these log entries are quite usual, mostly caused by dumb asses
scanning the system for security holes..

but later i got entries like this:

Nov 24 00:29:09 orbit kernel: Packet log: output DENY ppp0 PROTO=17 192.168.0.104:137
213.239.137.56:137 L=78 S=0x00 I=30419 F=0x T=127 (#1)

this is clearly a system from within, trying to connect to a system
outside..

what is it? i already checked the system within for viruses - without
success..

could smeone give me a hint?

[expert] Modem Busy? IRQ conflict?

2000-09-08 Thread Riley, Patrick (Patrick)** CTR **

Hi everyone, I'm about ready to explode because I can't get this problem
figured out. I just recently switched to Mandrake 7.1 from Redhat 6.2 and
I'm

trying to dial through KPPP and I keep getting "modem is busy". I also try
to go dial out through other things (minicom, and so on) and I get pretty
much the same response. I had this modem working fine under Redhat by just
adding the "setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0xdc00 irq 5" line but now it won't
work with

Mandrake. What could have changed? Is something conflicting with my modem
(by the way, it is NOT a winmodem)? It's a US Robotics 56k Model

2977. I've copied some of my system info below if it might help. I would
appreciate any help that anyone could give on how I might get this working.

Thanks.
My machine is a Athlon 650, 128Mb RAM, Abit Ka7 if it helps.

[expert] port-forwarding

2000-09-07 Thread Patrick Erler

hello MANDRAKE!

what is the easiest way (means, are there any tools included) in
mandrake to forward aspecific port (or better a range of ports) from
the outside over the firewall to a specific host inside.

means:

0.0.0.0/0:5100-5199 <-> 192.168.0.1:5100-5199
0.0.0.0/0:5200-5299 <-> 192.168.0.2:5200-5299

and so on...

[expert] [SOT] procmail problem

2000-09-04 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

sorry, for the slightly of topic question:

i'd like to execute a program whenever mail for a specific account
arives - so i choose procmail.

procmail is working, the program gets executed - but, how can i bring
procmail to leave the message untouched so that the owner of the
account can fetch the mail via POP3?

i think its quite easy, but i just can't find the solution in the man
pages...

thanks for all answers in advance,

ifconfig - or, if you'd like to have the pure ip for scripting try:

export LOCALIP=`ifconfig ppp0 | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f 1`

or if you have ISDN

export LOCALIP=`ifconfig ippp0 | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f 1`

the use

'ping $LOCALIP' or whatever..

[expert] faking DNS entries

2000-08-31 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

for testing my website before i put them onto webservers at the
internet i would like to put them to virtual Apache domains at a local
linux box

.. ok, i set up virtual IPs (thanks Jean-Michel), put the domains into
/etc/hosts, put up the virtual domains in apache and apache shows the
appropriate pages when i call them from the PC over the LAN which is
the webdevelopement machine. fine.

but why do they show up? when i do a nslookup "testdomain.de" (one of
these i whish to redirect) i get the internet IP back - not the
virtual IP from my linux-box...

as i see it, i need to put these virtual IPs into the DNS (which is a
forwarding DNS running on the same box like the apache) or into my
local hosts file.. i would prefer the first solution - can someone
give me a hint how to do it (maybe with webmin, although i know the
strucures of the dns-files a bit i prefer to change them with webmin -
they are to sensible fore mistypes..)

the domains in question are .de domains - can i symly put up a local
.de domain (without getting into HUGE trouble with the NIC
authorities?) and will the rest of the .de domains still be
accessible?

so many questions... ;)

[expert] Xfree 4.01 problem...

2000-08-28 Thread Patrick Mayer

Hi,

After fighting a while with Xfree 4.0 that came with Mdk7.1 (I could
only get a screen full of garbage), I've managed to install Xfree 4.01
by using the binary tar balls provided by xfree86.org. However, I have a
new problem: the graphical login does not function properly anymore: kdm
appears (with the X background) with all options but I cannot launch KDE
or any other window manager from there. I can only startx from the
prompt (runlevel 3) and I only get TWM, which is far from ideal. Does
anyone have any insight about how to make the graphical login functional
again, as well as the other window managers, short of reinstalling 3.3.6
?

Thank you for your time!!!

to be able to install kooldown i had to remove (as it was suggested

on a windowsbox) i get a completely messed up login manager i've never
seen before. on top is a list of the possible users, below are entry
fields for user and password and below is a dropdownlist supposed to
give me a choice of window managers but it has only one entry with
/all/ windows mangers on one single line?! (apparently a defective
config file)...

anyway, i'd like to get back my good old kdm - but how?

hope someone can help...

[expert] samba problem with new disk

2000-08-10 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

recently i added a new disk to my system (hdb).

i would like to share directories on that disk with samba like i do on
disk hda. but here comes the problem. it just don't work. i can see
the disk from the w2k-box but can't change into it.

al i get is

[2000/08/10 21:14:42, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(487)
Can't change directory to /mnt/data/quake3 (Permission denied)

in /var/log/samba/

the options, permissions and everything else of the new directories
are the same like ithe ones of the old directories...

an example:

the fstab reads:

/dev/hda1 / ext2 grpquota,usrquota 0 1
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/data ext2 grpquota,usrquota 0 0

the permissions:

directory in hda (first disk):

 1476284 drwxrwxr-x7 nobody inhouse 4096 Aug 10 20:42 transfer/

directory in hdb (new disk):

 588814 drwxrwxrwx4 nobody inhouse 4096 Aug 10 20:38 quake3/

 the smb.conf reads:

[transfer]
path = /share/transfer
writable = yes
force directory mode = 0770
create mode = 0770
force create mode = 0770
directory mode = 0770
force group = transfer
comment = achtung, jeder kann loeschen!
delete readonly = yes

[quake3]
path = /mnt/data/quake3
writable = yes
force directory mode = 755
force create mode = 755
public = yes

i log into as user pat of group inhouse..

for me it looks perfect...

btw, its samba 2.0.6...

i'm desperate

[expert] strange samba problem

2000-08-03 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

i have a strange samba-problem in Mandrake 7.1

thats what i did:

a directory (called "transfer") is shared with samba and is accessible
for group "inhouse". its located at /dev/hda5 (physical)
/share/transfer (logical).

i create another share for the same group. i do this with the copy
share function in webmin and point the directory to /dev/hdb1
(physical) /mnt/data1/mp3 softlinked to /share/data/mp3 (logical). all
filepermissions (unix) are the same, all ownerships are the same, all
samba settings are the same.

but ehen accessing the share i get:

[2000/08/03 20:56:49, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(487)
Can't change directory to /share/data/mp3 (Permission denied)

here is the relevant part from the smb.conf:

[transfer]
path = /share/transfer
force group = transfer
writable = yes
comment = achtung, jeder kann loeschen!
force directory mode = 0770
create mode = 0770
delete readonly = yes
directory mode = 0770
wide links = no
force create mode = 0770

[mp3]
path = /share/data/mp3
comment = MP3s
copy = transfer

the only difference i see is that the directory-to-get-shared is on
another partition.. can that be the reason??

in hope of a solution,

[expert] starting X for remote access only

2000-06-28 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

i access my router with X from my pc. for this, i start xdm at the
router. when i do this, at the router itself starts an x-session with
graphical login and stuff... i don't see this, because the router has
neither a monitor nor a keyboard... so, this xsession at the router
itself is unnecessary and uses CPU cycles which i would like to use
for something else..

so the question, how can i start the X-server (or client, how you
like it ;) at the router in serve-mode only?

or do i get something completely wrong here?

[expert] x is not starting anymore

2000-06-28 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo Expert!

suddenly xdm behaves strange.

i try to login from another pc with x-win32.

i start xdm at the console of the linuxbox. after that ps -x brings:
=-- cut ---
[root@orbit /home/ftp/pub]# ps -x |grep x
25679 ?S 0:00 xdm

25713 ?S 0:00 xdm
25715 pts/3R 0:00 ps -x
25716 pts/3S 0:00 grep x
=-- cut ---

but i can't log into the linuxbox.

some seconds after that ps -x brings:
=-- cut ---
[root@orbit /home/ftp/pub]# ps -x |grep x
25679 ?S 0:00 xdm
25690 ?S 0:00 xdm
25733 pts/3R 0:00 ps -x

25736 ?S 0:00 xdm
=-- cut ---

see the changed PIDs and three times xdm?!

xdm-error.log brings as the last lines:
=-- cut ---
_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

the full server output, not just the last messages
=-- cut ---

what can i do with this?!

somehow it seems that the security settings of mandrake are a bit

from 6.0 are working but i still can't connect to some ports,
