incredibly confusing and slow; the new one is much better in my opinion.

Typically I used rpmdrake to gather informations about a certain package or
file and to make decisions based on rpmdrake's output.

Before, I could query the system about a certain package or specific file by
name, description or file name. In a second I knew wether that package (or
file) was installed or not; if it was installed then I could remove it, on
the other hand if it wasn't installed I knew on what cd or other repository
it was and then eventually decide to install it or not. This was very helpful
while compiling software from source and discovering that I needed some
obscure file to complete the compiling succesfully.

Now I have to know these kind of information about packages beforehand,
because I need to know beforehand what part of rpmdrake I have to call. It's
frustrating to call something labelled Remove Software only to check if a
package is installed on my system.

If you want to keep rpmdrake this sliced way, fine.
But please add a new section (the fifth one!), a query packages database,
one from where a user can get informations about a certain package or file
such as if a package is installed (or not) and if not where he can find it.

Then it would have much more sense to call the Install packages or Remove
packages windows.

Also putting small buttons or icons to switch between the different parts of
rpmdrake would be very handy. This way it won't be necessary to got back to
mcc or the K menu to call another part of the package manager (what a waste
of clicks)...

With this little improvements rpmdrake would stay pretty much as it is now
(i.e. sliced), but with some of the old style commodities that used to
make the 8.2 vesion very easy to use.

PS: if there is someone here that's also subscribed to the cooker list (I'm
not) that thinks that this or other mails about this topic could be
interesting for developers working on 9.1, maybe he/her can forward these

I had a similar problem with my Agfa Snapscan e25 (it's a USB, not a SCSI

Just like you've experienced, my scanner worked fine in 8.2 but it wasn't
recognized at all in 9.0.

I solved the problem this way: I removed all the sane/xsane related packages
that were provided with MDK 9.0 and downloaded the sane (both backend and
frontend) sources from ftp.mostang.com (I also d/loaded the xsane sources to
replace those MDK-specific removed earlier).

I also downloaded the specific snapscan files from the snapscan sourceforge
project site and recompiled the sane backend sources patched with these
scanner specific files.

Needless to say now it works just fine. Probably there are similar files for
Canon scanners too, you should search Google or Sourceforge for Canon
Scanners and SANE.

BTW, it's a mistery why one device was previously supported by 8.2 and now
isn't supported anymore by 9.0. Maybe the MDK developers forgot something
rushing to release MDK 9.0 a few days earlier than R**H** 8.0!

Re: [expert] rpmdrake 9.0, a step backwards :(

2002-10-08 Thread Piero Piutti

I have just joined this mailinglist and I've noticed that one of the hottest
topics is the new look rpmdrake.

My two cents about this topic...

I've been using MDK 8.2 since last June and I was so enthusiast about it that
I have switched all my daily tasks from Windows to Linux.
What made MDK 8.2 so special were its distro-specific tools, the best of which
was no doubt rpmdrake. It was so user-friendly it was almost addictive!

So I was looking forward to update to 9.0 and I was expecting it to feature
all the good things from 8.2 plus enhancements as long as new stuff.

As far as I can see the new release is very good (stable as rock, I must say -
though I have been using it for a few days only), but my first impression
was definitely spoiled when I found out that rpmdrake had been sliced into
three different pieces!

Now it is very uncomfortable to use (at opposite of its predecessor which was
100% user-friendly).

You say that you had to re-work it in order to optimize coding (I'm no
programmer so I don't know much about coding issues).

Fine, but useability (one thing that made Mandrake stand up among other
distros) has gone.

I wonder why - even with coding optimization being the main worry - wasn't it
possible to gather the three parts of the new style rpmdrake in one single
window, separating them with tabs?

That way rpmdrake would be at least useable... one could call rpmdrake and see
wether one package is installed or not without having to call two separate
apps... maybe in MDK 9.1 (hopefully)?

Take care, regards

I wonder if the four icons should've been removed from Configuration |
Packaging? Having two access points, which work differently, for the same
function(s) is probably not a good idea.

Yeah, those 4 different icons in the KDE menu for something you could
previously do from within one single window is somewhat upsetting.

Calling rpmdrake from the panel MMC icon makes the new look one a little
more bearable. Still miss the old one, though.

Ok, I will stop complaining about rpmdrake now, enough is enough... :-)

I understand your concerns about writing software that can be used by the
widest spectrum of platforms and users, but a 333 P2 is a five year old

Wishing to have MDK 9.0 + KDE 3 (or Gnome 2) and maybe even OpenOffice run

Every design comes with advantages and disadvantages. There's no way to
meet every single need with optimum settings.

Right and agreeable. But I still keep my opinion on obsolete hardware - how
reasonable is to try to have a 2002 OS running smoothly on a 1995-1996 PC at
all costs, i.e. giving up useability for EVERYONE only to try not to cut off
a few users with very old machines?

If you don't like it, you are welcome to take the old rpmdrake and
 maintain it yourself.

I really wish I could contribute with code, but I have no coding skills and I
have no time to learn how to write software from scratch. Right now, all that
I can do is to report bugs I come across or give my feedback about apps (and,
yeah, buy a Power Pack, of course!).

With Linux, you have that choice.

That's what I like about Linux :-)

I know I come a bit late to complain about new features in MDK 9.0 but I have
decided to completely switch to Linux only a few months ago and I wasn't
aware about the discussion going on on the Cooker list about the new
features implemented in MDK 9.0.
Should join it soon to voice out my thoughts at the right stage of development
and influence the shaping-up of MDK 10.0! :-)

Before quitting, I wanted to say that there is absolutely no intention to
diminish the work of MDK developers in what I've said - I really appreciate
what you guys/ladies do and there are no enough words to thank the people
that bring us such a great OS for free. It's just that Mandrake is brilliant
and I simply would like it to be better and better - I felt that the new
rpmdrake (and a few other things) didn't go in this direction, that's it, but
I understand your points/concerns even if I don't always agree with them.

Take care, keep up the great job,

No, all the files in mounted FAT partitions belong to the user that
mounted the partition, all can read, but only he/she can write to
 them.

Find the mount line in /etc/fstab for the FAT partition, and add
 "noauto" to the options.

Reboot, log in as piero, then mount the partition using the icon, the
 command line, or, better, KDiskFree.

Yes, Andreas, thank you.But then, when you consult your mail under Linux,
and decide to enter a new address, you have to write in the file that is still
in the Windows partition. Here comes the problem, and the answer given by
netscape does not solve it.

[expert] A spare console

2000-05-06 Thread Piero

Could anybody help me with the following?

I have two computers, a desktop (with Linux) and a notebook (without Linux).
Is it possible to connect the notebook to the desktop (via a serial port, for
instance) and use it as console to the desktop?

[expert] Coordinating Address Books

2000-05-06 Thread Piero

In order to coordinate the Netscape address books in the Windows partition and
those on the Linux partition, I erased the files corresponding to the last ones
and substituted them with symlinks to the files existing in the Windows
partition.
It wasn't so smooth, but it finally worked.
Now, in the process of doing this napoleonic manoevre, I stumbled over
something that made me perplexed, and for which somebody has perhaps an
explanation.

All the files in the Windows partition belong to root and have mode: rwxr--r--.
When I work under Linux I work under username piero.

Since the changes in the addressbooks, that piero makes under Linux, have to be
reflected on the Windows partition files, I logged in as root, and tried to
change the permissions of these files (chmod o+w filename). Impossible. I
tried the to change their ownership: impossible. I finally modified /etc/fstab,
in such a way that piero has the ownership of all the files in the Windows
partition (uid=piero's user number).
This made the think work, but I do not find it satisfactory. Does anybody know
what prevents root form changing permission or ownership of the files belonging
to the Windows partition?

The entire partition (every file in it) belongs to root; permissions are
rwxr--r-- for data files, and rw-r--r-- for (recognised) program files.
Even root cannot give you the right to write into it (if root tries to change
permissions, nothing complains, but nothing is cahnged either), nor make you
ownre of the files.

like to know what the best way to bust it up for partitioning and

You need a little partition /boot; a little /root; also a little /swap.
On the opposit, /usr, /usr/local, /var, /opt and /home need to be fairly big,
/tmp needn't be enormous.
You best have them each on separated partitions, so that, when you upgrade or
reinstall you can preserve what you have formerly installed. (when you upgrade,
you change essentially /usr and may be /usr/var

My configuration, after several insttallations, is:

FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda6 251M 53M 184M 22% /
/dev/hda1 3.0G 816M 2.2G 27% /mnt/win
/dev/hda5 15M 931k 13M 6% /boot
/dev/hda71004M 47M 905M 5% /var
/dev/hda8 3.0G 1.4G 1.4G 49% /usr
/dev/hda91011M 156M 804M 16% /opt
/dev/hda10509M 104M 380M 21% /home
/dev/hda11525M 72M 426M 14% /tmp

I do not think it is perfect, but, as the we all know, so nobody is.

Subject: [newbie] Problems with boot disk.

I have Linux Mandrake 7.0 Complete installed on the following system
  Athlon 500 MHZ
  64M ram.
  20G byte IBM hard disk.

I have as a first partition an 8G fat32 partition with Windows 98. DrakeX
  setup a swap partition, a /boot partition (hda5) and a root partition
  (hda7). Boot loader is lilo.

I need to reinstall Windows 98. I understand that if a do this Windows 98
setup will remove lilo from the boot sector in favor of its own boot
 loader.
For this reason I am trying to make a boot floppy so I can mount the root
filesystem and reinstall lilo after I reload 98.

I have tried created boot and rescue disks using both dos (writeraw) and
linux following the instructions from the documentation. The boot disk
 works
but whenever I select "rescue" from the "boot:" prompt and put in the
 rescue
diskette I get an error. I am not sure but I think the error message is
 the
  same as below.

I have also tried to use mkbootdisk to make a boot floppy. When I boot off
it says it is trying to load the root filesystem off of hda7, I then get
 an
  "Error: 0x10" message.

  Any suggestions.

May-be somebody will give you a real bit of advice: let me just express my
sympathy. Boot and rescue disks seem to work only in a plathonic space of
ideal computers and virtuous users. If you installed Linux from a cd, you can
just allow Windows to destroy your boot sector, then make a fake upgrading of
Linux from your cd, during which you'll tell it "Oh, yes, I'd love to install a
loader! Lilo 'd suit me perfecly well"

Nevertheless, If I were you, I would backup everything I 'd think valuable. But
I must say that I 'd do that only if I were you: beeing myself, I wouldn't
probably be so patient, and I 'd take the risk of loosing everything. Then I
would be desperate, and I would have to drink it away.

[expert] Netscape window's fonts

2000-05-02 Thread Piero

I just installed a directory of true type fonts, that I made availeble to X
(i.e. the fonts already present in the window partition).

Everything works agreably fine, except for a bizarre side effect: the menu bar,
bookmarks, location and navigation toolbar fonts of Netscape Navigator, as well
as the similar fonts of Messenger and Composer changed in an unwanted and
apparently uncontrollable way,

Daoe anybody have a clue to it? I spent several hours trying to fix it.
