Hi Jenny

That is so great of you to offer. I hope Mike gets back to you. I actually
mixed my positive and negative after a short period apart. The negatives
were vaccinated. There had already been exposure in my case. It was less
stressful for all the cats. I have 11 now. I think I had 9 then but new ones
kept showing up. They get dumped here.

there are several FIV groups. You will need a intro to the moderator Joel.
Just explain your needs and you have an FELV cat. There are other members

If you search the groups archives you will see posts from Hideyo, who used

reversing severe anemia. You may want to join the yahoo FIV group and it is
a very technical group when it comes to treatment. You do not need to have

I had luck with immunoregulin reversing anemia.

I am certainly not diagnosing your cat. In humans a smooth tongue is a
symptom of anemia. Anemia is common in FELV cats. Are her gums pale? I had
severe anemia and my tongue was very sore as well. Could be why she is not

Re: [Felvtalk] Anemia

2009-01-17 Thread Sally Davis
HI Graca

I do not know what tests have been done. It is possible your cat has
hemobartenella, which often causes amemia in feline leukemia infected cats.
They often test negative for this and you should just treat as if the cat
has it. Normal treatment is 3 weeks of doxycycline and prednisone. If a
transfusion is needed until treatment starts to be effective then I would
advise the transfusion. My cat was treated for this in the beginning and
was not anemic after that. Of course he had his share of other problems.

Best of luck

I started to answer this and I am using a laptop, new to me. I am already a
terrible typist so somehow the whole response got deleted before i could
send it. Drat,

Anyway I will always look for the why. I think a friend of mine gave me a
reassuring one for why.

She said Baby Girl was obviously older than we thought. She had no teeth
except for a canine.

My friend a vet assistant and former nurse, she say probably one of three
things.

Toxin, doubtful as I think her death would have been sooner. We are under
strict guidelines for storage and use of pesticides.

Heart disease, and underlying symptoms

Thrombosis and in conjunction w/heart disease. I think likely. It hit her
very suddenly. She had blood coming out of her mouth right before she died.

She had a good six years with us and will always be missed.

Thanks Gloria..

The place I work is in a bit of an uproar.. call it "the economy"

Some of us have been "laid off" including a good Friend of mine.

We all had our hours cut..I live paycheck to paycheck like many.. so a 12.5%
cut was too much

Now they are telling us we have to take a week w/o pay off, DO WHAT

Plus the board met again yesterday and every time they meet something else
goes down

I had worried about our sweet girl if somehow we close.. She now has a
permanent home in heaven. I wonder if she picked up on our stress. Maybe her
recent friendliness was to comfort us. It certainly did. She will me missed.

Hi Diane,

Thanks. I saw Pat today and gave her a hug. She is not the hugging type, but
she is having a hard time, and doesn;t want to befriend any of the cats. She
is feeding another cat a Tuxedo male. I think Baby Girl kept him away but I
think he will come closer now. He too has been TNR. He still needs to be

HI Sherry

She actually visited me last night. She was telling me it was alright and
she was ok. It spooked my cats though, I heard a loud meow, and truly I am
not sure it came from any of my cats. Three of them were on my bed and all
were wide eyed what was that look on their face. I cannot say that the meow
came from any of them. Maybe she spoke though one of them. I cannot believe
she is gone. She had lost all her teeth except one. The vet said she was in
good body condition. Whatever took her it was very fast. She knows she was
loved. I hope she was able to visit Pat as well. I have her pawprint to give
to Pat. She is the lady who bought her food, canned food at that.

Thanks.

[Felvtalk] Baby Girl please add CLS

2009-01-12 Thread Sally Davis
Please add sweet Baby Girl to the CLS if possible she was not positive but
had 7 good years as a Feral cat next to where I work.

Here is what happened:

Yesterday I noticed the cat at work (a TNR feral) named Baby Girl was not
feeling good. She has had a URI on and off, but never seemed affected by
her. This time she was not eating and even allowed me to touch her. Normally
she would have swatted me. We discussed taking her to the ER but we did not
have a way to catch her or anything to put her in and it was closing. Today
before I even got to work Pat, who is really Baby Girls momma with the help
of another girl caught her. She had not eaten any food left for her
yesterday. So Angel first went to a vet that is one street over from us.
They could not see her gave names of other vets. I already decided to call
my vet who is also close. She could not be seen until 3:30 first . She was
in distress and I had noticed she was cold to the touch although she was
kept by a heater all day.

I drive her to Junior's vet. Since she is feral I also notified the guy,
Phil who looks after her colony. She is only one of 3 or 4 cats that hang
out next to us. He said they would probably test her for FELV in fact he
wanted her tested. They vet had a hard time getting blood she was so wek she
did not fight. Her temp was 94. The vet though she would test positive but
she was negative for FELV and FIV. She had pnuemonia and was now coughing
blood and she was shutting down. The vet was sure she was dying
and euthanized her. Of course it was a heart stick and I decided I did not
need to watch. It was over before I even was out of the room. The test came
back after she was pts. I called Phil to let him know. He will adopt out any
who are adoptable and has kept many cats himself.

Anyway I will miss Baby Girl. She was just getting freindly after 6 years
and would rub up against all that she used to run away from. The vet was
so kind she is going to bury her in her yard . She is now an Angel.

Hi, Jenny. Wisconsin Humane Society will, indeed, euthanize FeLV cats/kittens.
They tested a litter I rescued, told me they were positive and asked if I
wanted to come and get them or if they should euthanize them. Thanks to this
group, I retrieved the kittens. Only one was positive. Again, thanks to this
group, my vet re-tested and they were all negative. I placed 3 and kept 1 -
they are 4 months old and healthy, happy, and thriving. To think the Humane
Society would have killed them all!!!

Re: [Felvtalk] FelV kittens

2008-12-28 Thread Sally Davis
My Tiny died this way. He was pretty much asymptomatic. Other than initial
treatment he never required antibiotic or all the measures I too for Junior.
On Christmas day 2006 I knew he was not feeling good, but it was not such
that I would have taken him to a vet even if it was a regular day. I spent
some time with him watching TV. He went to sleep on the couch. I left the
room to do some other stuff. I heard a horrible coughting sound, I had heard
from him once before. I moved him thinking he might cough a hairball. This
was a much more violent cough than that.I realized he was not getting air. I
got the tank of oxygen it was empty. His gums were blue at this time the
spasms had stopped. He still appeared to be breathing. I went to get the
concentrator. I got yelled at by ny husband for waking him up. This was 5PM.
I went back to watch the life leave his body. I am told he was probably dead
after the intial couigh, and he most like threw a blood clot.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. These kittens would have had no life
without you. They know they were loved and will be waiting for you at the
Rainbows Bridge.

Try baby food meat. Junior loved the turkey, just be sure there is no onion
in it. I forget which brands are appropriate. It has been a while since I
had to entice Junior. Also try the L lysine added to it cause the URI could
be frome the herpes virus and this will help. Be sure he doesn't get
dehydrated either.

When the parvovirus first started to hit dogs, when there were puppies in the
house we would make everyone who came in spray the bottoms of their shoes with
a bleach solution we had in a spray bottle on our porch. Then everyone had to
take their shoes off and wash their hands thoroughly before handling the
puppies.

Did it work? Who knows? We had no vaccine at the time and I did have 2
puppies come down with the virus. But we felt that at least we were killing
any viruses of any sort that were on the shoes.

Re: [Felvtalk] LTIC/Imulan & Losing kitties

2008-11-25 Thread SALLY NORDSTROM
Amber, I'm sorry to hear about baby Parker.

One thing that everyone needs to keep in mind all the time - every living thing
on this earth will someday die. Nobody knows when or how, and to deprive
ourselves of love and affection even for a day, because of what may or may not
happen today or tomorrow is a slap in the face to life and love itself.

Good to hear from you. It is getting near the anniversary when Tiny and

He knew that Junior's time here was to be short. It is so bittersweet.

My Junior ran fevers as well. In the early stages he was running a
temperature as high as 106.5. Imunlan was not available then to my knowlegde
he was on Immunoregulin. It too is an immune booster, so my thoughth would
be the Imulan should be helping this. Initially he also received fluids.

When my P'Nut tested positive at 8 weeks old, we re-tested at 10 weeks.
Negative. My vet said it's not at all unusual to get a false positive on an
ELISA test, that there are many factors that could cause a kitten/cat to throw
a false positive - not just being exposed to the virus.

Re: [Felvtalk] Holistic vet

2008-11-18 Thread Sally Davis
Gary,

You are right about the studies not being long enough. The company is still
testing the drug. It may be possible though your vet to get it as part of a
trial. I have no idea what is involved. I have heard from someone on another
group that her vet used to be in the trial for immulan and he feels the
drug is useful. He continues to use it for FELV cats. He however opted not
to continue with the studies because of the issue you bring up.

Sue I am not sure about a cat who critically ill whether this would pull
them out. Is it the anemia that is the problem, if so would a transfusion
buy you some time so you can get this treatment? When my Felv kitties
crashed they crashed hard. The choice was easy then, not to have them
suffer. I was lucky to have been able to buy Junior 1.5 years of time with
us. He did not suffer.

2008-11-15 Thread Sally Davis
HI Lisa

You will not regret keeping this kitty. I wound up mixing my positives and
negative because they were all exposed before I found out what was going on.
I felt it was less stressful. Keep the litter box cleaned out. I really
thought I could not manage what I had going on. I will nto go into details
but I wound up with 4 positive cats one was a resue from animal control and
probably the source. It was a nightmare initially. I am not going to say it
will be a piece of cake but it will get better. I would do it again if I
wind up with another positive.

We all have an endpoint on this earth. We just do not know when. Ok so
yesterday was my dad's birthday he has been gone 14 years.

Bless you

Lisa, I had a kitten come up positive for FeLV on a Snap test. When the
others, plus mom, tested negative, my vet said she thought it was suspicious
and that I could stop isolating her. Happily, she just tested negative and the
vet's pretty sure it was a false positive.

Stick with this group! They are a wealth of information and inspiration, and
you will know what to ask your vet when you go. You will also get a feel for
if your vet is up to speed on leukemia by reading these posts.

Lisa

It is good that you have a vet who is willing to work with you. I am one of
those on this list who mixed my cats. By the time I knew I had a problem all
my cats had been exposed for months. Since stress management is very
important it would seem wise not to upset the kitten by separating him. That
being said he will also be exposed to anything your cats might get as well.

There are many treatments should the IFA test be positive as well. Also
sometimes kittens can throw the virus. I too have used probiotics for my
cats. Some find pumpkin to be useful for diarreah.

Re: [Felvtalk] felv kitties and their people

2008-11-10 Thread SALLY NORDSTROM
About 2 weeks ago I found this group when I was told a litter of kittens I
rescued from my alley was FeLV+. As it turned out, the Humane Society had made
a mistake - they are all negative.

In the few days I was asking questions everyone was so kind and so forthright -
thank you for your knowledge and concern. It made the fear and dread go away.
You are a great group of people and I hope it's okay to read the messages you
send back and forth - I learned a lot! Not just about FeLV, but about hope and
love, too.

When I thought my babies were FeLV+, the things you wrote made me see that they
were no different than any other cats. They can, and some do, live long and
healthy lives. They love and play and purr. If I ever do find a cat that has
leukemia or any of the other diseases you discuss, I won't be afraid, I'll just
keep on loving it and accepting the love it gives to me.

Bless all of you.

Hi Caroline

I love the term Gentle soul. My first to pass from FELV was this way. In
fact he was so laid back we did not realize he was in trouble until it was
too late. He crashed after being kept overnight on IV antibiotics. He
imoroved enough for me to hold him happy and alert, and that same night he
had seizures and was just a shell of himself when I visited him the next
day. I sent him on his way to the Rainbows Bridge. He was never tested for
FELV. Junior was tested the week Pumpkin died and was positive and so began
a horrible year .I can only be happy yo have knowm Pumpkin for his short
journey in my life. I had him 6 months.

I have a cat that does this kind of licking thing and always has. She is not

Re: [Felvtalk] Stray Kitty I took in tests positive

2008-11-02 Thread SALLY NORDSTROM
My vet said to keep them together, that's what I did. I kinda figured they
should be separate, but my vet doesn't seem real concerned since Mom tested
negative. The way she put it was that right now, anyway, we have 4 negatives
and a positive. Apparently, because they are only 8 weeks old, if mom is
indeed negative, they would have been exposed at about 3-4 weeks old and it
would be unlikely that mom would have let any other cats that close to them.
(this is a litter I found in my alley)

Any thoughts?

Re: [Felvtalk] my kittens!

2008-11-02 Thread SALLY NORDSTROM
Thanks for your response, Tonya. I found out a lot of things, one of which is
to stop crying, calm down and get to work. I have a wonderful vet who looked
at the paper work and said only 1 of four kittens tested positive. We tested
Mom - negative. We will test the positive kitten with the more definitive test
in a few weeks. In the meantime, I need to place the three negatives - I am
willing to pay for their second ELISA test, and am telling people that we don't
know right now. All we know is that they must be the only cats in the house
until we find out, and that if positive, they can live long and healthy lives
with other positives.

They are spayed/neutered, have their first shots and have been wormed. They
are sociable and self-confident. If anyone can help out by opening their home,
or know someone who can, please contact me!

Thanks to everyone on this site who has helped me so much. Whatever happens, I
know I'll always have you guys.

Now this was many years ago like 1972 when my Bud cat got sick. I was in
college and my dad took hin to the vet who dx'd FIP. Now I know there were
not tests done it was based on observation and he did not respond to
antibiotics. Anyway the weekend I was to come home he left and was never
seen again he was 10. I do not know about the tummy part I do know he was
losing weight.

My two cents... even though they were all exposed equally. I would keep them
apart. Repeated exposure is needed for infection to occur. So even though
they are not positive now it could still happen. If you get to the point
where the negative kitens are still negative after a few months and have had
their vaccines you may be able to mix them then. For now I would separate.

Another question. My kittens tested positive with the ELISA test. May they
have their vaccines? Mom gets tested Friday. If positive, may she have her
vaccines? May she be spayed?

I'm getting real confused about the available tests and their accuracy. Can
anyone shed some light on this for me?

I had to file a bankruptcy and can't afford testing. Is there someplace that
can give me help?

How hard is it going to be to place my rescued kittens in homes? What
resources should I be using?

Re: [Felvtalk] New to group

2008-10-18 Thread Sally Davis
Tracey

It is a very personal decision. In an ideal world with a perfect setup, I
probably would not mix. However in a small house 10 cats and all of them
were exposed before the diagnosis I mixed after vaccinating the negative
cats. I wound up with 3 positives out of 11 cats and a cat that died just
before this but never tested. I am sure he was positive too. Junior lived
the longest. I felt it was less stressful mixing them. I did wound up with 3
additional cats. No I did not add them they showed up. The three new cats
were kept separate while getting vaccinated and time for it to take effect.
None of the other cats became positive. Be aware there is still a risk.

Good Luck and bless you for taking care of her.

Oh yes I found that the immuno regin helped Junior's gingivitis clear up. It
is an immune booster mentioned on teh website.

You Are at the right place for advice. It will vary from person to person. I
am so glad you took Macy into your home. Lessening stress is important.
Feeding a high quality diet the best you can afford. I say that bc the best
that I could afford was different from what other folks feed. Immune
boosters are a start. Since many of these cats also have FHV L Lysine is a
good start and may alleviate her upper respiratory symptoms. At any rate it
will not do any harm and is inexpensive. I got mine from Puritans Pride. I
ordered capsules 500mg. You can mix it with wet food. One or two per day
depending on symptoms. Well I have to run to work. You will get more
information I am sure.

I am so sorry for you and Zing Zing. I had a cat named Ling Ling . He
started out life as Sting. He was a black tabby, you know very subtle

I have ten cats now in a 1000sqft house and a small lot in the country. Most
still are in/out cats. Pewter has decided inside is ok with her. She got her
booster rabies and all other shots yesterday. I decided that she needed this
round, but after that I will either go every three years or call it a done
deal except for rabies. My Senior girl mostly prefers inside. JJ sneaks out
anytime he think he can get by me.

Re: [Felvtalk] Help with Anemia questions...

2008-09-16 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Joey

I am sure you will get lots of help and answers. I can give you my
experience.

My Junior was diagnosed with anemia in 2006. The vet thought was sue to
hemabartenella(sp). I know you say no fleas but as she explained it only
takes one flea. He was put on antibiotics. In the meanwhile I had another
cat get very sick. Hospitalized with anemia, jaundiced and probable fatty
liver disease. He was hiding the fact he was not eating so probably
lethargic which is what I noticed before taking him any. Well he died at the
vets office. Even though on IV antibiotics and fluids. I go into panic mode.
I take Junior back to see his vet(different clinic). Well Junior though
showing no symptoms is running a fever of 106.5. Ok they keep him subq
fluids and she calls me to test for FELV. He had tested negative 4 months
prior to this, but symptoms dictated to test again. He is positive. He stays
on antibiotics and I am dealing with a crisis because I have 11 cats now 10.
2 more test positive. I isolate Junior and Tiny until all my cats can get
vaccinated. The other thing which stabilized Junior was the Immunoregulin.
His anemia went away and never returned to my knowledge. He crashed this
past spring with breathing difficulties due to heart problems. This could
have been brought on by anemia but he did not have pale gums or nose ,so I
do not think that was a causative factor. I had junior for a year and a half
past his dx in spite of being very symptomatic. He had fairly good quality
of life. There are other things you can do once Kitty's anemia is stable.
This is my experience. Tiny who was asymptomatic actually only live a couple
months he threw a blood clot and is unknown if FELV had anything to do with
his death.

Oh yes ask if the anemia is regenerative or non regenerative

What helped with anemia. The antibiotics assuming he had hemabart. He also
got several B12 shots when he was treated for his fever. I gave him Pet
tinic (vitamins and iron).

[Felvtalk] Junior jr.

2008-09-02 Thread Sally Davis
Today when I got home from work there were some girls out playing in the
road. They came over to pet my friendly cat. One of them saw JJ and said he
looked like their cat Goldie who ran away. Well if they live at the house I
think they do I always suspected that that is where JJ came from he was left
in a box on our truck with another young cat and a note saying take care of
us. They have another cat now. I hope it is fixed, I do not need anymore
presents like that.

It has always been my experience that a new cat arrives before one leaves
this earth. I know with some it is the other way around.

[Felvtalk] Cole

2008-08-26 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Kim

I am so sorry to hear that Cole lost his battle. You did all you could Cole
knows that and loves you. 7 years is a good long life for a FELV infected
cat. They are never with us long enough and we learn so much from them. You
will miss him for a long time remember the good stuff. I have a Junior look
alike in my house who is probably related to Junior a cousin or something.
He came from the same neighborhood. It is comforting to me to have this look
a like. I will always miss my Junior as you will miss Cole.

Big Hug

Re: [Felvtalk] Daisy

2008-08-21 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Sharyl

That is how I am treating it. She is a weird cat anyway. She did this once
before when she was in heat. Waiting for her spay appt. I really think she
was letting me know she did not like me letting Little Black in the house. I
have to feed LB in the house becuase the raccoons will eat her food before
she can. She usually goes back out in an hour. Daisy has a delicate stoamch
too. Will puke undigested food several times a week. It was better when I
had them on IAMS, but I can hardly afford food for myself.

Thanks

Sally

[Felvtalk] Daisy

2008-08-21 Thread Sally Davis
Last night, rather early this morning my cat Daisy jumped up on my bed and
woke me up with her attack play. She does this sometimes when she wants out.
Well I let her out and got back in bed. Now Spike was using the litter box
and I smelled really strong urine. I moved to turn my light on to make sure
she wasn't missing the box. Well Daisy had peed on me and the bed. Far as I
could tell it was normal. I think maybe it is behavioral bc she hates my
feral cat who I let in to eat. Last night I had separated them. I have done
that in the past as well . I will keep and eye on her but she prefers to
stay outside so it may be hard to monitor her bathroom habits.

What do you think? Should I panic and take her to the vet or see what
happens. The rest of her behavior was normal for her. Daisy is not a
positive. I think the urine output was adequate, but it is hard to tell when
they pee on the bed.

Hi Laura

I have to agree with Sharyl. I kept Junior a bit on the chunky side for the
same reason. He went from a low weight of 10.5 pounds after being DX'd to
about 12.5 pounds which was a little above his normal weight. He was still
chunky when he was sent on his journey. I am glad he did not go through a
wasting stage. He always had a good appetite.

Re: [Felvtalk] Supplements/lysine

2008-08-02 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Wendy

Since the feline herpes virus is fairly common in cats then I believe the
addition of L lysine would be of benefit to cats with FELV especially if
they are exhibiting cold-like symptoms. Semantics aside as to whether it
boost the immune system or has some other mode of action, giving a cat that
does not have the herpes virus L lysine will not do it any harm. I gave
Junior lysine due to symptoms that would have indicated he had the herpes
virus as well as FELV. Anything to help him fight off the secondary
infections. I think you have a point about it's usefulness whether you are
able to articulate as well as MC. I do not feel that this was meant to be
inaccurate information. It certainly is not harmful information IMO.

I also used Transfer Factor in Junior. It was not cheap and I am uncertain
how much it helped. I was no longer able to afford the good stuff and I
think his health slid a bit when I switched to a cheaper brand. If you are
going to use Transfer factor be sure you get the 4Life formula. It has
changed formulation but is it the plus form.

Mary Christine you are a wonderful source of information and so passionate.
Everyone here has been so kind to me and helped me keep Junior going far
longer than the vet would have given him. They advised euthanizing. He lived
another year and a half. Most of it good, Some not so good. It got real bad
very quick and the decision then was easy. I stay in the group in case I can
help. I know I would certainly do things a bit different now. I hope I am
not put to the test again.

Re: [Felvtalk] Supplements

2008-08-02 Thread Sally Davis
There is this feral cat where I work. She has been fixed and her ear has
been clipped. Getting her to a vet would be impossible as I imagine she
would not get in a trap again. That being said she is very friendly to one
lady at work who feeds her canned food. Anyway for the past couple months
she has had on and off runny eyes and nose. She sneezes. Well figuring there
was a chance it was herpes virus I gave Pat Junior's left over Lysine. In a
weeks time she started clearing up. Baby Girl is feeling much better.

I am so sorry you have reached this stage. The animal communicator idea
might be good or you may just want to ask him yourself. Have you had him
