Re: OT my neighbor is killing all the cats- SOS
One of my friends had a similar problem with a neighbor. I contacted our state senator she had one of her staff people get back to me about the specific regulations what to do. They were very helpful. So, maybe try contacting your state senator state assembly representatives. Hopefully they are animal lovers. Incidentally, this neighbor apologized to my friend out of the blue recently asked her to forgive them...and these people used to be absolutely horrible, to the point that my husband put a surveillance camera on my friend's property for documention of this creep's activities. Thankfully, he has ceased his animal abuse, at least as far as we can tell. Good luck to you and to these babies...bless you for helping them. Yvonne In a message dated 11/19/2006 3:59:15 P.M. He said that he threw cats who were dead outside of the fence yesterday, but I did not see anyone in the alley – it’s so awful – I was thinking of warning neighbors with flyers – but is there anything I can do (putting a rat poison is not illegal – he will claim that he is trying to kill rats)

Evan Dee, I am so sorry that you lost your Ginger. What a great idea for keeping her memory alive! She is abeautiful girl. Yvonne In a message dated 10/13/2006 7:25:01 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: It breaks my heart to see the loss of so many cherished souls and I wish I could offer words that would ease the pain, but they've all been said, and said well (this is a very nurturing group). We lost our beloved 15 year old (canine) daughter earlier this year and it was a devastating loss that we still mourn. One of the many things that we decided to do to help keep her spirit in our home was to create a digital photo montage and take it to Staples and have it blown up into a 2x4 poster for our dining room (the size allows for larger, more life size images). I know it's not much, but I would gladly create a similar montage image for anyone that wishes to do something similar for their loved one. The advantage of creating it digitally is that you can insert several images into one digital "photo" (as well as a poem, verse, tribute...) and that image can be directly transferred (on a much larger, but crisp) scale onto the poster. We also did the same for a single photo, which hangs by our bed. I put a scaled down copy of the poster we had made at the site below. Please feel free to contact me if you would like me to try and do something similar for you. There would be no charge for creating the image - it's just a chance to give a little something back to a group that has given so much. You can have it blown up and placed on a poster board for between $30.00 and $50.00, depending on size you want. It may be even cheaper if there's a Kinkos in your area.~ Evanhttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g133/iamlazarus/GingerPoster.jpg

Dear Nina, My heart breaks for you on your loss of little Spencer. He sounds like an absolutely magnificent boy I am so glad that you both got to share your lives with each other. I have no doubt that he is chasing butterflies at the Bridge with my Peanut all of our furkids. I have been impressed many times with your strength faith, and I know that you know that Spencer's spirit is with you always. Take very good care. Love, Yvonne P.S. What did Spencer look like? In a message dated 10/12/2006 11:29:00 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi Belinda and All,I'm so sad and numb this morning. So completely worn out, I know you all understand how I'm feeling. Spencer had been so weak yesterday, but still so attentive and loving, what an incredible spirit this boy has. The vet was late, (I'm so glad he was), and I had been laying next to Spencer on our bed, keeping him company while we waited. He lifted his head and tried to move, but he just couldn't get his once magnificent body to work. I decided to bring him out front. He used to love going out with his dogs every morning to get the paper and I thought he might enjoy going out one more time. I was right. Unbelievably, he rallied and was actually able to stumble to his favorite spot under my Jeep parked in the driveway. He even drank from the feral's water bowl. I couldn't stand seeing him on the uncomfortable cement any longer and put him on his bed and we sat and quietly watched the neighborhood comings and goings from the front steps.I had just brought him back inside when I saw my vet approaching up the front walk. Heaven help me, but I wanted to scream, NO! NOT YET! Of course, it was time to finally say goodbye.Do you still do tributes with their pictures? I'm going to send you his picture off-list to include in case you do. Bless it, this was a hard one, (but then I guess there just aren't any easy ones, are there?).I want to express my gratitude once again to this incredible list of caring people. I went through such contortions dealing with Spencer's illness and decline. I don't know how I would have coped without your support and prayers.Much love as always,Nina

I was afraid they might not do it as she doesn't seem to be in very good shape to me, but they did. They mentioned that she had ovarian cysts, and I thought this might be part of why she is unwell, but my vet says ovarian cysts are normal when cats are in heat. Since I brought her home from the animal shelter in April, she has had URI, eye infection, stomatitis with 8 teeth removed, IBD, and now ovarian cysts. She is neg/neg, been dewormed twice, negative fecal, treated for fleas and ear mites. She seems very immune suppressed. Dull coat, eaten up with ringworm (I mean big bald patches on tail, back, bald ears), even though none of my other cats have it. She's on flagyl for the IBD. Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi Guys,I can't make up my mind about Spencer. He's been on the dex shots since 9/7. I started to half his dose eod on Sat. It doesn't seemed to have had any negative effect. If it wasn't for the fact that he's all but stopped eating, I would think he was on his way to recovery. He's so emaciated now. He continues to enjoy life, he does things that are not at all in line with someone that is dying. He has decided that the roof of our outside habitat is the perfect place to get away from it all and somehow he scales the 8 foot fence to climb up there. The first day he did it I helped him down, figuring he wouldn't be able to do it himself. I was wrong. I haven't seen him do it, but he gets up and down on his own. He's active during the night and his eyes are bright. He's not hiding, he's not sleeping excessively, when he sees me approach he meows hello to me, if only he would eat! I've tried assit feeding him. He stresses out and won't swallow. He acts like he's interested in food, sometimes he'll take a couple of bites, then he makes a face like the food is his enemy, like it makes his stomach hurt to eat. It doesn't seem like he's not eating because he's preparing to die, it's like it hurts to eat, so he won't eat.Bruce thinks I should leave him alone, that I shouldn't bring him back to the vet. He thinks that I'll only be making the time he has left miserable to do so. I just don't know what to do. When I ask Spencer about going to the vet to see if they can help, I swear I hear him say NO! No more vets! I don't know if this is wishful thinking on my part, but I keep wanting to save him. We never had a diffinative diagnosis... I hate the idea of him slowly starving to death. I hate the idea of pts before he's ready. I hate the idea of bringing him to the vet and putting him through the poking and proding. I just don't know what to do.Thanks for listening,Nina
Re: Sharing price information
I'm in a Milwaukee, WIsuburb one of the vets we go to charges 115 for a senior wellness profile,24 for the exam, 14 for a fecal, 50 for an X-ray, 32 for a snap test, 10 for ear cleaning, 14 for distemper vac. The cat-only clinic we go to is comparable in its rates, higher on some items, lower on others. I don't know what they currently charge for spay/neuter, b/c it's been 5 years since I've had to have that done. If I remember correctly, dentals at the cat only clinic are usually b/t 100-200, depending on if extractions were needed, etc. Yvonne In a message dated 10/9/2006 11:06:33 P.M. Hi Nina, Ashley Basil seem to be doing well. I think our furkids often have a better understanding of life than we do they know that Peanut was ready to graduate into the next world. During Peanut's final hours, Basil went up to her very cheerfully headbutted Peanut twice, like she was givng her a happy send-off knew that she would be ok. I, on the other hand, keep getting paranoid about my babies this week, but I think that is only natural after losing a furkid. Thank you so much for thinking of us! Hugs headbutts from Ashley Basil. Re: Samantha/Good News
I actually think she would probably be ok. She has had dental issues since she picked me at the humane society in 1990, has pretty much had dentals done 1-2 times per year she's never had a problem with the anesthesia. She had some sort of episode a little over a year ago...my husband saw it what he described sounded like a seizure, but we can never be sure what happened. We took her to the e-vet at the time they suspected it was her heart, since her labs indicated enlargement. She had an ECG, tho, about a week later it showed no mechanical defect. She has had her teeth cleaned once since then they just used the gas, not the injectable she came thru it (Maya, a black white 6 year old just minimized my screen while I'm typing...stinker!) just fine. I'm justalways a bit nervy about my furkids right after I've lost one. She's been fine the last couple days, but I think it's time for another dental. Re: Angel Peanut
Hi Nina, Peanut came to us mid-July, with 2 of her companions from a bad situation. The other 2 gained weight, but Peanut did not. She was obsessed with food, though, she ate, so my first suspicion was hyper-T, as she had already tested negative for intestinal parasites. I never imagined that it would turn out to be something like this, so I've been in quite a state of shock. Our vet said that cancer can sometimes cause an increased appetite, b/c basically the cancer is sapping all the calories nutrients from the cat, so the cat tries to eat more to compensate. They said this probably started before I had her that there was likely nothing I could have done to have changed the outcome, especially with an 18 year old cat. I know how hard it is to let go of the hope for a miracle, but she no longer needs you to fret about her care. You gave her a wonderful life and right up until her last breath you did your best to make wise and unselfish decisions based on what was best for her. Didn't I read that she was healthy and strong until this final illness overcame her? That's the sort of life and passing that I pray for for all those I love. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing how grateful she must be to have been such an important member of your family. Nina

Re: Samantha/Special Needs List
They seemed ok with each other. Peanut knew how to keep the young upstarts from messing with her, but she never seemed to mind Sammy. What's interesting is that Ashley, one of the other cats that came with Peanut, has been sleeping on the couch in the spot where Peanut was laying on her last day with us. She has never slept there before. It's like she senses Peanut's presence there or something. I held Peanut through the night, but I put her on the couch later, b/c I was afraid that it was causing her discomfort every time I moved. Then, I just laid next to her kept my hand on her petted her. Basil, the other cat that came with Peanut, came up not long before we left to help Peanut to the Bridge gave Peanut 2 head butts. It's like she was saying good-bye, but it was very cheerful, like she was saying that Peanut would be all right. Yvonne In a message dated 10/1/2006 7:49:47 P.M. Samantha/Good News
I am happy to say that the antibiotic drops are working...Sammy's eyes nose are already clearing up she just ate some canned cat food. She is moving about just jumping in my lap purring. I am so relieved. Maybe I was worrying a bit too much, but it is easy to do that after losing a furkid. Yvonne
Angel Peanut
I just wanted to thank everyone for their good wishes prayers. Unfortunately, the antibiotics fluids did not get any response. They tried to syringe feed Peanut at the vet she wasn't even swallowing. At that point, they decided it was more likely to be cancer (lymphoma)that was causing the problem not hepatitis. They did not feel that there was any chance to turn things around. Ibrought her home overnight held her, talked to her prayed, prayed, prayed for either a miracle or the strength to let her go. I really thought shewould pass at home, but by 5:00 on Friday, she was still with us seemed to be getting into quitea bit of pain and/or discomfort, so we decided to make the trip to the vet to help her to the Bridge. It was so hard it just seems so wrong that we only got 2 and half months with her. She's a beautiful calico girl with the most gorgeous emerald green eyes. I will miss her climbing up my pant legs whenever I was doing anything that involved food...she had so much personality. I just hope to God that I did the right thing. Belinda, can you please add Peanut to the Bridge list? Thank you all for being there. Yvonne Angel Peanut
Samantha/Special Needs List
Belinda Everyone, Could you also add my Sammy to the special needs list? She is a 17 year old Siamese mix that looks kind of like a Ragdoll. She didn't come out this morning when I was feeding the cats their canned food we couldn't even find her. When we got home tonite, I found her hiding under my desk behind the backup power supply for the computer. She has a yellow discharge coming from her nose eyes. I suspect it may be a URI, possibly related to or complicated by her ongoing dental issues. I gave her some antibiotic eye nose drops tried to get her to eat some turkey, but she wouldn't eat any. I'm going to start syringe feeding her if she hasn't started eating by morning get her to the vet on Monday. Having just lost Peanut, I am feeling really jumpy about this. Please keep Sammy in your prayers. Thanks. Yvonne

Re: Peanut/Special Needs List/Update
Thanks Belinda all of you for your support prayers. The vet called Peanut's liver values were all elevated. Her bilirubin white count were thru the roof. He thinks that cholangiohepatitis is the most likely culprit. I took her to the vet for 3 days of supportive care treatment (IV fluids, antibiotics, syringe feeding). I hated to do it...I don't want her to feel scared, but I felt it was her only chance. I really felt that she wouldn'thave survived the night if I had kept her here. It was really hard to leave, but I'm hoping this will turn her around. I had to go to work after that there were no phone calls from them since I dropped her off, so I'm considering that to be good news. They would have called me if she would have needed to be moved to a 24 hour vet for overnite care, so she was apparently medically stable enough to go the night there. Thanks again for the prayers keep 'em coming :) Yvonne In a message dated 9/27/2006 1:37:23 P.M. Not saying this to scare you it is a fact and I've seen it enough to know it is very reversible, Buddie had this, hers was caught very early on and she was fine.Lots of prayers for Peanut. Make sure she is getting a can to a can and half of food a day if this is what she has. And yes it can strike in just a day or two if a cat quits eating, especially if the cat is overweight to start with.I'm adding her now, hope her blood work comes back with out any serious problems going on.-- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ...

Re: Peanut/Special Needs List
Leslie, I can't tell you how heartened I am to hear your story about Goliath. Even Peanut's ears were yellow when I dropped her off...I was pretty scared, but I'm starting to calm down now. Her bilirubin was 10.8 I guess normal is .1 to .4. Her white cell count was a whopping 44,000 normal is 16,000. I will definitely ask about the SamE. I think we got a good omen as we were leaving the vet. My hubby had met me there after he got off of work as we were turning on to the road from the vet, I saw him gesturing at the SUV in front of us. I look where he's pointing this SUV's licence plate says ME A PNUT. Now, what are the odds of coming out of the vet clinic seeing your cat's name on someone's license plate? Maybe it seems weird, but I'm considering ita good sign! Thank you so much for giving me hope! Yvonne In a message dated 9/27/2006 2:14:33 P.M. Peanut/Special Needs List
Hi Belinda, Could you please add Peanut to the special needs list? She came to me 2 months ago with 2 of her companions, from a bad situation, she is now having issues with her liver. I am waiting on results of her bloodwork urinalysis. I have been syringe feeding her through the night, but she is very weak this morning. She stopped eating abruptly the night before last this crash come on like load of bricks. I am floored. She has jaundice her urine is a dark orangey yellow. I'm praying like crazy that we'll be able to turn this around with the force feedings. Depending on what the vet says, I may opt for a feeding tube. I'm pretty scared but trying to remain optimistic, since that's what Peanut needs from me right now I have read of cats recovering from liver issues. She's 18 years old I know they can't live forever, but I've only had her for 2 months I just want to have longer to show her that this world can be a decent place that she is loved before she moves on. But, then again, it never seems like it was long enough when the time comes. I just hope it isn't her time yet, selfish as that may sound. I am determined, though, to do whatever is best for her, to the best of my knowledge. Please keep my precious baby in your prayers. Thanks for listening. Yvonne Check out the new AOL. Hi Everyone, This is another case of someone dumping their pets. I will never understand how these people live with themselves. These kitties are gorgeous! The shelter contact info is below. Yvonne Crosspost from Special Needs Rescue cats 8/29/06:A woman dumped all of her 12 cats off at the Humane Society of Williamson County yesterday. One of the cats is a gorgeous adult male, Russian Blue kitty. Unfortunately he is FIV positive. Many FIV positive kitties live a long healthy life, the only difference is, they need to be indoor only kitties and not with other kitties, unless they are FIV positive as well. She also dropped off a Tabby Momma with her two 3-week old Siamese/Tabby kittens (see description link to photo in second post below). If we can't find homes for them soon, they will be euthanized. Please open your heart to this sweet boy and possibly one of his kitty friends. Pictures are available. Please save this sweet boy! Of course, she never bothered to fix or vaccinate any of us. Now I have FIV and two little kittens to care for who might also be FIV positive. We will probably live a full long life and just need to be kept indoors and away from other cats unless they too are FIV positive. FIV is not transmittable to any other animal or person. Please consider adopting one or more of us! We promise to love you always! Adoption fee has been reduced to $50.00 and includes spay/neuter and vaccinations. Hi Everyone, This just came thru on another one of my lists...just passing it on in case anyone can help. Yvonne Please respond directly to Cathy at [EMAIL PROTECTED]com or 201-867-4795Hello,I run a small cat rescue in Secaucus, NJ which is run out of an animal hospital. This past week a client brought us two stray kittens. They both test FeLV + by ELISA and IFA. They are 10 weeks old and look healthy at this point. The people wanted them euthanized. But I wanted to try to place them first. My boss has given me 10 days to find a place for them. I am now down to 8 days. I was wondering if you can provide me with any information, leads or referrals. We also work with the town shelter and they brought us two cats yesterday that tested FIV +. They removed the cats from an older woman's property because her children were afraid that she would trip over the cats. Now that they have tested positive they want nothing to do with the cats. They won't let us release the cats and my boss won't let us keep the cats because we already have an FIV+ cat that we haven't been able to place for over a year. So we are looking for somewhere for these cats where they will be cared for.I would appreciate any information or leads that you could give me. Thank you so much! Re: FIV infected Kitten
Hi, We found my cat Simba, at about the age of 5 weeks. He tested positive for FIV. We had him retested at approx 6 mos he was still positive. It is true that FIV tests of young kittens may only be picking up maternal antibodies, so it would be a good idea to retest the little guy after 6 mos. Simba is going to be 8 years old in July. We have allowed him to mix freely with our other 12 cats all along none of ours has ever tested positive. He even gets into occasional spats w/ one of the others he licks several that he is good friends with, shares bowls, litterboxes, etc it has never caused a problem. He is so healthy that we've had him retested several times over the years, because it's just so hard to believe that he is positive. He keeps coming back positive, but I've stopped worrying about it. I just make sure he gets good care thank God that he is healthy. I have also elected not to vaccinate due to a study done at Cornell awhile back that found that viral loads for the FIV increased after vaccination. I don't recall how I initially foundout about this study, but I did call talk to them to confirm the info. I have not heard anything about it ever since, tho. I'll have to do a little digging see if that wasresearched any further. I don't have a reference that I can give you right off hand, but I'll look for one.Simba did get his initial round of vaccinations as a kitten, however. This was my experience...personally, I have no qualms about mixing FIV+ with negatives, but everybody has to do what works for their situation. Hope this helps. Yvonne In a message dated 6/22/2006 7:45:19 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: have been researching the net for information on FIV in kittens and hope to get more info here. My daughter came home two weeks ago with a little freal kitten appr. 5 weeks old. We already hav a 3 year old cat and had not planned on another cat, but ofcourse everybody in the family fell in love with this little thing. Yesterday we were told she tested positive for FIV, which realy upset everybody, but we have decided to keep her and deal with things as they come. Now I read that when a little kitten tests positive, you need to keep testing it until at least 6 month of age because it might be mothers anti-bodies, passed through mothers milk that might make the test come back positive. Is there anybody in this forum that indeed had that happen, meaning that at first the test came back positive but later negative? I know we are grasping at straws, but hope helps. We are also trying to decide whether to keep the two cats separate for ever or introduce them anyhow, I will talk to the vet to have the older one tested too now and if that comes back negative, to have him vacinated, but wonder whether that would be sufficient protection. Any advise??
Re: FIV Infected Kitten
I also wanted to clarify that when I say I don't vaccinate, I mean I don't have Simba getanyvaccinations, other than the ones he got as a kitten before I knew he was positive. The research that I was referring to was with regard to routine vaccinations...this was before there was an FIV vaccine. Just wanted to make sure it didn't sound like I was talking about the FIV vaccine. I don't give my others the FIV vaccination, either, since it would cause them to always test positive for FIV, according to my vet. yvonne
Re: FIV Infected Kitten
I remember now where I got the info regarding the increased viral loads after routine vaccinations...I called for a consultation at Cornell talked to one of their vets she told me about their findings...I believe the study was not yet published (this was around 1999 or 2000) may not have even been complete at the time, so that's why I don't have a reference to something in print. All I've been able to come up with so far is the following from VetMedCenter - Consumer - Article Details : "Vaccination of FIV positive cats is controversial. While it is essential that risks of common diseases such as Panleukopenia and upper respiratory infections be eliminated, vaccination may pose some risk for the immune-compromised cat. Many veterinarians will elect to devise a modified vaccination protocol for FIV positive cats. This usually includes extended vaccination intervals and the use of killed vaccines. " So, I've just elected not to give Simba any further vaccinations since his initial round as a kitten. I'll try to find more info about that research, since I'd rather give you some hard evidence, rather than just my word. If I find anything, I'll let you know. Take care! Yvonne

You can see from the picture she says, "I'm feeling pretty good right now!" http://www.trentdesigns.com/elizabeth/MVC-082F.JPG Just praying for good days and hoping to spread a little hope :0) head butts andkittie kisses to you all.

Prayers are on the way for you your precious little guy. Yvonne In a message dated 6/17/2006 4:29:05 A.M. He won't eat and drinks only a little...He can't get up at all...I stood him up but he is too weak to stand alone, cause of his leg hurting him.. I think he must have another infection somewhere or I really just don't know...but something is for sure not right..other than the leg problem... Anyway, please pray for him. Thank you, Kerry and Bandy
Re: Please pray for Bandy
Hi Kerry, I have used an animal communicator named Morgen Espe. She was wonderful. Her web site is www.theanimalsvoice.com. Yvonne In a message dated 6/17/2006 7:37:10 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I just gave him a little chicken broth after I gave his liquid baytril..I added a little pedialyte, but he gets so stressed.. He did take it ok. He did drink some water earlier, but I don't think it is enough so I am going to try to get some sub-q fluids as soon as the vet opens...I have been up checking on him most of the night..I know he needs something else, but I don't know what..I think he needs a different antibiotic..along with the baytril..cause his temp is still up, too.. Marylyn, I think awhile back Nina sent me something about an Animal communicator, but I don't remember who it was or how to get in touch with them...I have never used one, but have read about them and some of the posts here at the list...Please send me the info if you can... Thank you, Kerry and Bandy

Re: OT-Anyone know of safe ways to deal w/ ants?
Thanks to all of you for many great ideas. The cats actually are intrigued by watching the ants trucking around, lol. I'll try out your suggestions let you all know what worked. Thanks again! My hubby likes to use Terro, which I don't like at all around the furkids my human kid. Any ideas? Thanks!
