I hope the specialist has some answers to help Bandy.  I'm sorry I haven't written, but I've been moving.  I check for your updates though, and am hoping Bandy gets past this.

2005-08-17 Thread Nina

Hi Kerry,
This is so terribly frustrating, poor Bandy! It is wonderful that he
seems so fine when his temp goes down. I sure hope the specialist can
get to the bottom of this. I know we've thrown some suggestions out
there, why don't you print out the posts about Bandy from us and the FIV
list and highlight the things you want to go over with the Internist,
(like Michelle's suggestion about Immuno-regulin etc.)? I know
sometimes when I get in the vet's office, especially when it's so
important, I don't always think straight. This way you'll be sure to
ask everything you need to. Just bring the notes in with you and read
questions right off the page, don't forget to bring a pen to write the
answers down! I can't tell you the number I've times I've asked a
question, listened intently to the answer, and then promptly forgotten it!

I sure hope you get to the bottom of what's causing that temp soon.
Please let us know what happens. We're all pulling for you and Bandy.

Nina

The vet who gave me Metacam for Ginger actually marked, with a pen, where to fill the syringe it comes with to.  It is a very small amount, and it was below the markings for dogs, I think. But that is an easier way to do it, if your vet will mark it.

Since the Metacam is only labelled for dogs, the dosing syringe that comes with it doesn't show small enough amounts for cats. What you have to do, is get your vet to give you a 1 cc syringe that the end will fit INTO the end of the syringe the Metacam comes with. Pull up 10 lbs worth in the big syringe, then stick the 1 cc syringe INTO the end of that one, and push/pull it from the big one, into the small one, until you get .20 CC in the small syringe. That was for Bones, when she only weighed 5 pounds, you might want to do more, according to weight, but the cat dosage is .20 CC per 5LBS body weight. You only give it once every 3 days, it has a controlled release.

Did you ever ask about giving Metacam for fever reduction?  Also, I keep saying this, but I would really try Immuno-regulin.  Except that a few cats get an hour-long side effect of raised temperature, which I guess could be bad if his is already so high. I would maybe start him on it when his temp is down.

I usually give 500mg of Lysine once a day; if the kitty is really having effusive sneezing or eye discharge, etc., then I use 500mg twice a day.  It's 1,000 mg per day is the dose that a veterinary opthamologist gave me for Paulie when he had a corneal ulcer due to herpes.

I'm happy to hear that Bandy has gained a bit of weight but is having problems with fever.  A really high fever like that can often be symptomatic of something a friend's vet calls a "hot virus".  The come kind of out of nowhere, bring a high fever, and tend to resolve on their own.  How long has Bandy been dealing with the fever?  Is he taking L-Lysine?

Bandy's temp is down for the moment..so I each time this happens, I do hope it is his turning point of it not going up again...
The infection and fever started middle of June..He got better then relapsed around July 4 with a high fever...His WBC count was normal then and PCV low around 21..so more antibiotics were added and he got better again only to relapse again on July 18 with an elevated WBC count and low PCV.. Since he has been on procrit, the PCV has gone up to 31..It went from 26 to 31 in one week and he is only getting  2 shots a week now..for at least 2 more weeks, then he will go to once a week..His temp has shot back up twice since July 25..and his vet tells me she thinks it is from the inflammation that goes on with his FIV and FeLV..I do understand to a point.  He responds very rapidly to the 1/2cc of dex when it is elevated and it will stay down for several days..The dex is short acting, too...I don't know though... Each time though, I hope when it is down that it as I said is his turning point of it not going up again..He won't eat when it is elevated or not much anyway...She
wants to put him on 1/4 baby aspirin every 3 to 4 days starting on Fri..as to keep the inflammation down...Does anyone understand this?
She did say that since he has responded so well to the procrit that we do know now that his bone marrow is producing RBC on its own..which is also a good sign...
I am going to request another WBC test when he does his next blood work..

Both of those ideas are great and if we have a problem I will try them..
So far I have been feeding him right after pill time..and he is eating, I just hope
this continues..He hates to see me coming now as he seems to be feeling better
and knows it must be pill time...Guess this is why I haven't added too much to his food
as I don't want him to think it is going to taste bad then not eat...
I do add corn oil to it some, too..He likes salmon so I put a little corn oil on it..
I read in a vet manuel that I have to add 1 tsp of corn oil per day per degree of fever. Along with a high fat diet..because of the caloric increase due to the fever..__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

My vet makes a slurry of some canned food and water and chases pills down

their pills better than with plain water.

with at least a couple of ccs of water, watch for Bandy to swallow! You
don't want this stuff getting stuck in his throat. What I do to make it

it's too sticky. I use a tiny bit of olive oil, or margarine to grease
it up. If you can get Bandy to drink, or eat a tiny bit right
afterward, all the better. Some cats have good response to

Re: Bandy's temp up again!

My vet makes a slurry of some canned food and water and chases pills down with a syringe of that.  Typically the cats will eat it and wash down their pills better than with plain water.

Kerry R,I sent you a pretty extensive reply to your off-list inquiry, but I wanted to add something about Dox. It is pretty harsh stuff and can cause esophagus damage if it doesn't get swallowed properly. They tell you not to lie down directly after taking the stuff. Always chase it with at least a couple of ccs of water, watch for Bandy to swallow! You don't want this stuff getting stuck in his throat. What I do to make it even safer is put it in a small gel-cap, (you can get empty gel caps at most health food stores, or use a small one from other sups that you empty). Michelle Lerner coats her pills with Nutrical, but I've found it's too sticky. I use a tiny bit of olive oil, or margarine to grease it up. You know Kerry, something just occurred to me.  Are the only times you
are taking Bandy's temp at the vet's office?  Stress can cause the temp
to rise, could you take his temp at home when he's relaxed?  Just
wondering...

Kerry R,
I sent you a pretty extensive reply to your off-list inquiry, but I
wanted to add something about Dox. It is pretty harsh stuff and can
cause esophagus damage if it doesn't get swallowed properly. They tell
you not to lie down directly after taking the stuff. Always chase it
with at least a couple of ccs of water, watch for Bandy to swallow! You
don't want this stuff getting stuck in his throat. What I do to make it
even safer is put it in a small gel-cap, (you can get empty gel caps at
most health food stores, or use a small one from other sups that you
empty). Michelle Lerner coats her pills with Nutrical, but I've found
it's too sticky. I use a tiny bit of olive oil, or margarine to grease
it up. If you can get Bandy to drink, or eat a tiny bit right
afterward, all the better.

Some cats have good response to transdermals, (drugs made into creams
and applied to the ear for absorption), others don't. If Bandy doesn't
seem to be getting the expected relief from the Pepcid in this form, you
could grind up the tablets, (I forget the dose, I think it's a 1/4 tab
of the "original" formula), and add it to his food.
