I used to take our parakeet into a nice, steamy bathroom when he had
a cold (pretty unusual). Keetie sneezes are so funny--they're so
tiny! If they're sitting on your shoulder you can feel the tiniest

I think we are going to get to where we specialize in tiny kittens. I
am really, really interested in finding out more about treating them
as *everyone* i know around here says 30%+ mortality rate is common.

I rarely do tiny kittens, and almost never have bottle babies.

Yall are lucky in that respect. For me it is a much bigger risk to
leave them unprotected for heartworms. Awareness is ok around
here..we even have a billbord on I-35 - "One heartworm can kill your

So many times I find it is a matter of picking which option is less

2007-05-09 Thread Susan Hoffman
Zithromax is considered safe for pregnant and nursing moms. I googled it once
upon a time and found the information (breeder related but it may be on the
manufacturer's packaging.) ust google it and you'll find it. Your vet is
definitely wrong on this one.

I have also used Advantage on tiny kittens. I just do a dab on my fingertip
and touch to the back of the kitten's neck. I've never had an adverse reaction
but you can always wash them off if you get nervous. I reserve Revolution of
those over 4 months

Kelley,
This is the second time you've mentioned your kitten's flea problem. If
your kitten's flea infestation is great, they could be causing more
problems than the risks of treating them, (I'm sure you know that
kittens can develop anemia from the little blood suckers). I know these
guys have serious URI symptoms. You are there, you would know better

apply that to the kitten. The next day, no more fleas. I wouldn't use
revolution because of what happened to Kerry's kitty, (as Phaewryn just

This totally makes sense because the 6 month old kitty
I have who is fighting a URI was also given Revolution
after he was neutered last Friday. He has since lost
some hair and has redness on the sides of him. I plan
to call MY vet today to ask about them because I want
to make sure they won't get any worse...why do vets
use it on young weak kitties if they know it isn't
good? It wasn't my vet who gave it...it was the vet
who preformed the neuter on a sick kitty...not sure
why any of the stuff was done to him that was because
not only is he underweight but he also has a URI that
is now worse because he was put under for the
neuter...doesn't make sense to me...thank heavens it
isn't my vet!!!

Phaewryn,

I don't know. He did tell me we could run a bunch of tests, but that
he wouldn't. He would treat for the symptoms, and he also constantly
tells me not to beat myself up too much.

I could spend hundreds of dollars trying to figure out what is wrong
with a 3 week old kitten, or I could get a lot of cats altered and
vaccinated for the same amount. Rescue sucks sometimes.

P.S. If this were my only kitten, I would have tests done no matter
how much it cost. But is is more like my 25th kitten. So far this
year.

I have JUST ABOUT made my peace with "there is no one else wiling to
take these tiny kittens and at least you are giving them a chance."

It is either that, or lose my mind.

Ok, all kittens seem MUCH better. I have an adult that refuses to be
syringe fed - she vomits it back up..so I drop bits of food in her
mouth "baby bird" style and she eats them..that zithro is a miracle
cure, I swear.

I really could use your help with a treatment protocol for tinies..I
do not want to lose anymore..most that I lost were asymptomatic...but
my precious little snowshoe was really sick and I have to wonder if
she could have been saved if I could have gotten zithromax sooner..

I did not see anything like that in the law I read. If you see

they have discretion for certain medical conditions.

Re: OT- Cheap source of Zithromax?

2007-05-08 Thread Kelley Saveika

My veterinarian told me it was against the law to have animals not
vaccinated against rabies. I tend to believe him since it is his
license on the line, and I've never looked up the state code. I just
tried to look it up, see if this is it.

http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/idcu/health/zoonosis/laws/vaccine/

I think we are going to get to where we specialize in tiny kittens. I
am really, really interested in finding out more about treating them
as *everyone* i know around here says 30%+ mortality rate is common.
Even my vet keeps telling me to not beat myself up too much. Heck,
one of them died AT the vet and they could not determine anything
wrong. She just died.

local regulation. I'd like to take a look.

I rarely do tiny kittens, and almost never have bottle babies. (Though I
have a great foster who loves to take on the little ones and also has no
real mortality rate.) I've had some very sick 2 or 3 month olds from
shelters, as well as adults, but I rarely have anyone under 6 weeks. (Never
mind the 4 week old in my bathroom. It was an emergency.)

What do you put on their eyes? I was told to use
neosporin and it will clear up their eyes and it has
worked wonders with my kittens...their eyes are as
clear as they should be...

Yes, i have a few who have had a little diarrhea. They have been
treated with albon and it is pretty much cleared up.

They look SOOO much better today.

The ones upstairs in the bathroom I was doing a great job of
isolating. Then they got large enough to want to explore, while still
being small enough to be able to wiggle under the door jamb. That's
how *they* got it.

Little Muffin's eye looks bad. I hope she'll be ok.

What is the vaccination history on the momcat who stopped nursing?

When do you or your rescue start vaccinations? I use the Heska ultranasal

How fast are the cats/kittens going downhill. What behavior do you see

Who can afford necropsies? Does the shelter have a history of panleuk (many
have it every year). Do they bleach-clean cages, move cats from cage to cage,
put multiple cats from different places in the same cage? Do they vaccinate on
intake?

What is the vaccination history on the momcat who stopped nursing?

When do you or your rescue start vaccinations? I use the Heska ultranasal
FVRCP vaccine that can be started as early as 4 weeks (tho I wait till around 5
weeks.)

How fast are the cats/kittens going downhill. What behavior do you see
around the water bowl near the end? What color is any vomit? (Yuck, I know.
But it's relevant.)

Do you do a 14 day quarantine on new arrivals?

From what you have said I would be a little concerned about panleuk. But you
can rule it in or out without a necropsy.

They *all* seem much, much better after the switch to zithro. But it
is only the snowshoe I'm convinced died of URI.

I use nebulizers (not vaporizers) with medicine in them..not water...I
have heard some people take cats into the bathroom with them when they
shower, too.

Here's the nebulizer I made (well, I didn't make the one in the pic,
but one very similar).

On 5/8/07, Susan Hoffman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I would go with zikthromax. Clavamox and amoxicillin are just not strong
enough alone for stubborn problems. And the only time I use a vaporizer is
when there is a lot of congestion and the cat is having a lot of problems
breathing. Never heard of the vinegar before and it sounds pretty foul to
me. (I hate the smell of vinegar.) I have used Vick's for vaporizers but
just for a little bit at a time. I have heard it is not good for cats but
in an emergency when you want to get nasal passages opened up, I go for it.
But if he's eating well, it sounds like he can smell and breath so I think I
would just do zithromax in this case.

break the URI, but should I be worried that this cough

purring and appears to be acting well. He does not

won't go away...any ideas? Have you ever heard of

The mom who stopped nursing was vaccinated late term. I cannot
prevent rabies vaccinations from happening; it is against the law to
transfer an animal out of a public shelter without it. Even if it
would kill the animal.

However, she appears to have started both eating and nursing again.
*She's* sick too. Pretty definite URI. My vet says I can't give her
zithro and also give the kittens zithro while she is nursing. Says
there are no studies.

I've also got fleas, and he won't let me capstar them until they are 2
lb (which seems to be taking forever) and i can't bathe them as they
are sick (well, I could, but I'm not).

FYI: BNP ointment is far superior to terramycin.

No other symptoms I could detect. 3 have died of unknown causes.
One maybe fading kitten syndrome. Weighed 4 oz at 22 days, died at 23
days. Mom stopped feeding, so I fed and when I was at work she was at
the vet. She died at vet. One kitten dead in bathroom when I went
in, no prior symptoms. One died yesterday, had seemed unstable so I

I also have one adult who is not eating and is vomiting up syringed
food within 3-5 minutes after feeding.

Another adult who is not eating but taking syringe food well.

usually take in this many either. I take a lot of kittens who don't

Re: OT- Cheap source of Zithromax?

2007-05-08 Thread Susan Hoffman
I would go with zikthromax. Clavamox and amoxicillin are just not strong
enough alone for stubborn problems. And the only time I use a vaporizer is
when there is a lot of congestion and the cat is having a lot of problems
breathing. Never heard of the vinegar before and it sounds pretty foul to me.
(I hate the smell of vinegar.) I have used Vick's for vaporizers but just for
a little bit at a time. I have heard it is not good for cats but in an
emergency when you want to get nasal passages opened up, I go for it. But if
he's eating well, it sounds like he can smell and breath so I think I would
just do zithromax in this case.

am also running a vaporizer for him 24 hours around
the clock. I did have vinegar in the water but my
boyfriend thought that was too much for him so last
night I put just plain water. I can't tell if he is
sounding any better. He has this awful cough that
keeps lingering on. He has only been on medicine
since Sat. night. I know some cats it takes longer to
break the URI, but should I be worried that this cough
is still lingering? He is eating like a piggy and is
purring and appears to be acting well. He does not
have any discharge anymore, but again, that cough just
won't go away...any ideas? Have you ever heard of
using vinegar with a vaporizer? Should I put it back
in? He is negative so far for FeLV by the way...

Have you ruled out panleukopenia?

These are tiny kittens who started off on the wrong paw to begin with. Was
the mom who stopped nursing vaccinated during the pregnancy or while nursing?

FYI: BNP ointment is far superior to terramycin.

(actually I told the vet if he could do anything to do it, but if he
was suffering and too far gone, to PTS).. He was very, very cold.
One died yesterday, had seemed unstable so I
was syringe feeding A/D, he was taking it well.

All died between 3-5 weeks. The living ones are 4-7 weeks. Living
ones have horrible congestion, some with severe eye infections, some
not. Were on clavamox x2 weeks. Were on triple antiobiotic drops for
eyes, have bumped that up to terramycin.

I also have one adult who is not eating and is vomiting up syringed
food within 3-5 minutes after feeding.

Another adult who is not eating but taking syringe food well.

I lose kittens to URI every year. Not usually this many, but I do not
usually take in this many either. I take a lot of kittens who don't
have high viability to begin with. I'm especially a sucker for those
who come in to the shelter solo at 3 weeks:(

If you must buy this in the next couple of hours it sounds like an online
purchase won't do, is that correct? If you need it right away, I would call
all the pharmacies in your area and ask how much for the prescription you
have. When I did this I found one that was $15 cheaper than any of the
others. Funny though, when I went to fill another one awhile later it was
$15 more expensive and I didn't have the receipt to prove they sold it to me
cheaper before. When your on the phone, get the price and the persons name
and keep your receipt.

not in ten days.:(
