[Finale] Finale Notepad/Reader 2009

2008-09-04 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct

As I am on the digest, apologies if someone's already posted about this.

There is apparently a letter being sent out to registered Finale and
Notepad users outlining (basically) that Finale Notepad 2009 is going to
cost $9.95, and there will be a free Finale Reader 2009 that will open,
print and playback Finale and MusicXML files.

This is a bit of a shame. Sure, US$9.95 isn't too much even if you're a
student (presumably with a credit card), but for students, downloading a
cracked version of Sibelius is free.

In an institution, where (for example) we put a copy of Finale Notepad
onto every staff computer and lab computer (and get the staff member to
register it online), this is going to be a financial imposition.

Let's hope the new version of Notepad is worth the money and hassle.

[Finale] Finale 2009 questions/issues

2008-08-01 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct
I downloaded the demo and checked it out. But it raised a few
questions/issues which maybe arose during Finale 2008, I'm not sure.

- Does everyone else have the Garamond font for the items in the Setup
Wizard? (Yuk! Great printing font, horrible screen font). And at
slightly different widths too.

- I love that the custom smart line box is now resizeable. Bravo.
Except that when you resize it, it just makes the whitespace around the
objects larger or smaller. It's a shame that it doesn't put more or
less objects on the screen without the + - magnifier.

- It would be great if there was a context menu for the items in these
new resizeable dialog boxes. For example, right-click on an expression
and you can Edit, Duplicate, Reassign to Category etc.

- I noticed that in the text inserts, where I had previously inserted
the filename it now just says "[Filename]". Is it like that in the full
version?

- Is the only way to access Automatic Update Layout/Music Spacing on/off
through the Programme Options now? :(

- This is my first experience with what used to be the Mass Edit tool.
It was possible to access what used to be called the ENIGMA Utilities
via the context menu (e.g Check Accidentals, Check Ties etc.). But
these are all gone now? Not accessible via any Context Menu?

- Is TGTools fully compatible with Finale 2009?

- What a bummer that it's not possible to rename the four staff lists.
For all the talk about how this new regime is supposed to make life
better for publishers, those of us who actually like to document what we
do will be disadvantaged by this lack of naming. There will be no easy
way to remember what Staff List 2 contains in a month or year's time.

- I LOVE that it's possible to resize the Expressions Palette now.

- What a shame that we can't just "Assign to part" via an item in the
Expressions context menu (or can we).

- The default font for a new category in Category Designer seems to
default to Times New Roman, in spite of whatever font are used
throughout the document. It would make sense to be able to set this in
the Document Options along with the rest of the text fonts. Some of us
don't use Times New Roman. I suppose I can change it once in a Category
then duplicate the category as a workaround.

[Finale] Speedy entry

2008-08-01 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct
OK, not aiming to revisit old wounds - but I thought I would share one
aspect of my recent experience of teaching a class of
mainly-Finale-newbies to the application.

For the note-entry method, I showed them how to use Speedy, and what the
keystrokes meant and did. In 5 minutes they were entering a Haydn
string quartet movement, and at a surprisingly quick rate. This was
without a MIDI keyboard.

I hope that MakeMusic still realises that Speedy is a really excellent
tool for note entry that is (in my opinion) considerably more
straightforward than using Simple without a MIDI keyboard. Speedy seems
a better balance of simplicity and power. Because there are fewer
options as compared to Simple, there are fewer keystrokes to come to
grips with as a beginner - but the options that are there are easy to
use and powerful enough to enter all pitches and rhythms you want.

Plus Speedy is great because it provides the user with the option to
select pitch then enter rhythm for note entry.

Mind you, it would be good to able to change clef from within Speedy I
suppose. Maybe press ? and a list of clefs pops up. This would be
relevant to the tool because it relates to pitch.

Anyway, in the end I just hope that Finale doesn't consider removing or
crippling Speedy. It really is an excellent and easy-to-use tool.

[Finale] Re: Finale in the University

2008-07-30 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct

Has anyone else out there taught or developed a large-scale
entry-level Finale class? I'd love to share (well, steal, if truth be
told) ideas if you have. Most of the students will be taking the
course online -- I've been making screen casts for them -- and only
one lab full (20) will be in the classroom. That was the only way we
could make it work with 80-90 students taking it. This fall will be
our first time offering the class and I anticipate more than a few
kinks will need to get worked out.

I teach something like this at Sydney Uni, but which deals with general
score presentation as well (e.g. binding, printing, paper weights, basic
design, general music presentation). Not online though, and as I don't
deal with the composition majors it's probably at a different level to
yours.

To be honest, one of the best things you can do for them is set Stephen
Powell's Music Engraving Today as a reference textbook. That way they
learn to best present their scores no matter which application they use.

This semester we divide our class into two: I focus upon Finale basics
for 6 weeks, and someone else teaches Sibelius basics for 6 weeks.

Interestingly the majority of students in my class of
non-music-specialists come from a Finale or Finale Notepad background.
This is in stark contrast to my first year composition class where 15/17
use Sibelius.

artificial limit, and I would encourage other Fin09 user who thinks so

Oh my goodness, what a great way to wreck a powerful feature.

I use staff lists all the time, and a multitude of them. For example,
say you want a boxed expression for all the string parts to appear above
the Violin I part only in the score, but in all the string parts. Or a
"Score in C" marking above the Piccolo only in the score - in none of
the parts. How in hell can you do that under this new system? A
convoluted and time-consuming collection of 'Hide/Show' clicks I
suppose. Jesus Christ - as if I don't have enough to do in my life.

Can you alter the "Tempo Staves" staff list if needs be? Can it be edited?

Why does Makemusic make such things worse, rather than better. Do they
not consider that some of their users may be power users who may NEED
these features? For whom such powerful possibilities are the reason why
Finale is so flexible, i.e. a valid reason not to switch to Sibelius?

The worst thing seems to be that I will have to upgrade to Finale 09 to
fix the @[EMAIL PROTECTED] non-WYSIWYG slurs, but lose features in the process.

I've just about had it with Finale. If only Sibelius had a means by
which one could select pitch then rhythm when entering notes, I would
change over (and join the rest of Australia in the process).

I have finally sought to use the automatic part-assignment features in
Finale, i.e extracting the Horn 1/2 staff to two separate parts without
putting in a new staff specifically for Horn 2.

This seems to be OK, except that I have my cues on Layer 4, and from
what I can see, you can only have one layer on such a part. Is this
correct? Is there any way for me to show both Layer 1 and 4? Layer 1
have my whole-bar rests, while Layer 4 has the cue.

I got a "music typesetting" spam from India, and decided to have a look

The document properties show no music fonts, and it being done in Adobe
Illustrator. A big magnification shows that the symbols like sharps and
flats are individually built.

They have probably been converted to outline first in Illustrator.

Anybody ever try this program? It's command line, like Score.

Anyway, there are no rates on the spammer's webpage. I wonder... are we

I wouldn't say so from the quality of the output at its present stage.

However I have wondered why there aren't more Indians teaching

The boys from Sibelius ran a marketing demo for the General Music
teachers in the public schools. I teach Instrumental Music at 4
elementary schools and did not see the demo, but EVERY general music
teacher I run into can't stop talking bout how cool Sibelius is.

During my 30+ years of public school teaching, I have seen this kind
of thing before. Commodore used to dominate the educational
profession in my schools. They lost out to Apple, who in turn, lost
out to Dell. In each case, the newcomer was better at marketing and
more interested in cornering the market.

Now I am seeing Sibelius stick it to Finale. I have not used
Sibelius, nor do I intend to, but I am concerned to see MakeMusic
take a back seat to any other notation software. On this list, I
hear mostly complaints about Finale. Why is MakeMusic willing to
take this kind of beating? For my purposes, (small ensembles),
Finale is just fine and I have no complaints. It used to be that I
could endorse Finale without reservation. Now, I am not so sure.
Is Sibelius as good as it appears to be?

The marketing to education here in Australia has been extensive and
fabulous, to the extent that Sibelius basically runs in every school and
just about every University. It may prove to be a model of what is to
come in the US if it hasn't already.

Students use Sibelius in schools, then go home and buy it or use cracked
copies. The cracked copies have basically negated any advantage offered
by Finale Notepad. Through observation and anecdote, very few people in
the education sector seem use Finale any more (though the ex-distributor
tells me that the Finale sales in the last year were higher than ever,
so maybe I'm wrong). The education sector is the beachhead to the wider
community.

Personally I find Sibelius difficult to use and am full of admiration
for those who manage to scores with it. I still consider Finale to be a
superior product than Sibelius in many ways, however the thousands of
musicians/students/educators/composers who use Sibelius in this country
prove me wrong every day.

I also wonder about some of the abbreviations and capitalizations. e.g.

Surely "Bp" or even "Bagp." would be better.

Why is "sax" abbreviated to "sx." when it contains the same number of

Why do they abbreviate Bassoon as "Bsn" and Contrabassoon as "C. Bn."?

I would think that "Flugel" would be a better abbreviation of
Flugelhorn. Similarly "Mar" for Marimba and "Glock" for glockenspiel.

There is a "Flexi-Tone" which should probably be "Flexatone".

Are drum kits commonly called "Drum Sets" in the US?

Isn't the more generally abbreviation for cellos "Vc", not "Vlc"? There
seems to be both in there.

Re: [Finale] HP 5si Duplex, frustration with 9x12 paper

2007-05-03 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct

 > List members...

I latched on to a bunch of 9x12" paper and am using it to do some
simple scores & parts. It works great on my HP 5si UNLESS I try
duplexing. While none of you may own a 5si, I am hoping that the HP
printers are universal enough to allow what works for you to work for
me on the 5si.

I'm using tray 1 (the only possible location for custom paper) and
defined 9x12 paper as "concert," just as Finale does. Single-sided
printing works beautifully. But when I tell it to print two-sided, no
combination or permutation of portrait-landscape-rotated landscape
(whatever that is), flip on long edge/flip on short edge seems to
give me two pages that print properly. Only partial pages print on
either side, and I find no rime or reason to how they print. They
start various places on a page...

How can pages that print so nicely one-sided be such a mess when I
try duplexing???

Any words of wisdom welcome. I hope the HP printers are universal
enough for your instructions on (say) a 5000 to work on my 5si.

Thanks... Jim

Dear Jim,

I use a 5si though the duplexing function has carked it on my particular
printer (i.e. the feeding mechanism).

Whilst I don't have any experience with 9x12 paper, I used to duplex
print successfully to A3 paper which may be the same thing.

Have you checked the double-sided option in the printer itself? In the
internal LED menus on the top of the printer? I had problems with this
at one stage.

Also I couldn't print A3 duplex successfully at 600dpi until I added
more memory to the printer itself.

Hopefully these will help you.

I should have added that my instictive preference is for dictionary
hyphenation, but I want to confirm that instinct. So far I haven't read
any disagreement.

Well, OK, my thoughts on this are that hyphenation should follow how the
music is sung, i.e. with each note beginning with a consonant, and
multi-consonants split. "pro-mise" not "prom-ise". This approach stems
from my time of singing in a contemporary music choir in which it was
drummed into us.

Of course this means there are weird hyphenations that just don't seem
right: "e-xist" or "ex-ist"? (maybe it's possible to get around it in
this case since x is really two consonants in one: ks).

I also make an exception for the "ing" suffix, which is what your
original post is about I think?

As for the statement that it may lead to words initially being
pronounced incorrectly, I don't know of too many instances in which
vocal music is sightread in performance anyway.

Altogether that was the approach I took when creating the hyphenation
dictionary on my website. Originally it was created for use with Philip
Aker's auto-hyphenation plugin for Finale, and it's by no means
finished, but maybe it may be useful for someone.

A quirk of 2007 though is that if you have bars set without their

change the measure attributes of an earlier bar as well - in all parts

I knew that I would be unable to run versions of Finale prior to
Finale 2004 because of the lack of Classic support on Intel Macs, but
the inability to run Fin2004 and Fin2005 is *entirely* due to
MakeMusic's copy protection scheme. If the copy protection didn't
exist, they would run acceptably under Rosetta, as Finale 2006 does.
But Finale's Registration Wizard needs to be patched to run on Intel
Macs. A decision was made to make this patch available for Finale
2006 (which runs under Rosetta), but not earlier versions of Finale.

Yes, you are correct: it's purely due to the copy protection scheme. I
have kept a copy of Finale 2005 on my recent intel iMac and it works
fine because I used the transfer settings application, and it seems to
have transferred the registration factor or whatever across as well.

Another way around the problem is to use the Networking/labpack
licensing feature, which apparently is available through Makemusic. We
have a lab full of intel Mac Minis all running Finale 2005 without a
problem. (I'm not sure whether you need a non-Intel mac to run the
hosting application).

It would be a fairly trivial matter for Makemusic to supply a

Unfortunately, Finale is a notation tool, not a composers' tool. There are
many schemes and patterns we can dream up that could be automated, but to
be able to automate everything is beyond current software capabilities.
Maybe it always will be, since it would probably take as long to define how

to do something as doing the job itself. So unless your music uses a very
small set of techniques, I don't think there will ever be a solution.

But I'm sure someone out there will disagree with me!

Yes, and it will be me :)

There are quite a few plugins existing already that extend what Finale
can do, including compositional ones (e.g. the OpenMusic plugins).
Philip Aker and I started working on a whole batch of other ones but I
didn't get the funding and then lost touch with Philip so they never
eventuated. I like the idea that computers can do such 'grunt work' for
us - that's what they do in many areas, and so if they can help with
composition, all the better.

However you're correct that it would take longer to programme the plugin
for this than it would to actually do the work. Maybe I'll
investigating the Manuscript language in Sibelius since it seems less
opaque and quicker that learning C++ for Finale plugins.

Thanks for this Michael, it's very good to hear because the standard

[Finale] Unable to change time signatures

I need to change 2 bars at the end of a piece from 4/4 to 5/4 (and no

assumed this was due to Finale and a large GPO setup.

I discovered to my horror that Quickeys 3.1.1 was actually the

only logging out and back in cured the problem. Temporarily.

I thought I would throw this out to the list to see if there were any

like restarting all the time.

That's absolutely correct. Whenever Finale starts to feel sluggish,
going to the Activity Monitor reveals that the Quickeys Background
Application is using an absolutely huge amount of RAM and CPU time for
no reason.

The solution is to force quit the Quickeys Background process. You will
get a message saying that toolbars are now unavailable, but Quickeys
still works fine for me after that and everything will be back to normal.

Well then, I assume that PDFs created straight from Finale must
automatically embed all the fonts it needs--for example those I
created myself (because I can see them in the resulting PDF file). Can
I therefore also assume that if the result looks good to me that it

Upon researching your question, my first thought was to:

save as PDF via the Print function in Finale,
then open the PDF in Preview
then Save As into the TIFF format from within Preview
then Save As back into PDF again from within Preview

This sort-of works - the problem is that the TIFF only saves at 150dpi.
I cannot find any setting to change this :(

However, the problem of font embedding is apparently solved by printing
to PDF-X format.

And apparently Lulu works fine with the PDF-X format too.

Good luck

[Finale] Parts function Finale 2007 (OS X)

2006-11-07 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct

Dear list members,

I finally got around to doing parts for a piece in Finale 2007 today
using the dynamic parts feature.

There were a few bugs/annoyances and wondered if anyone else had found
the same, or if they were unique to me:

* When going to the Manage Parts box, and selecting New Part, is there
any way to have the part name automatically set to the instrument name?
It was very annoying to have to retype them in for each one.

* I had problems with using the * key in Speedy to show/hide accidentals
- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. On one occasion if I
pressed P it put the ( ) and the accidental, but nothing without.

* I found that the Measure Tool affects more than one measure if certain
settings are applied, and even worse, affects measures that haven't even
been selected. For example:

was the initial setup. In the bars selected, the 1st selected bar was
set to be included in measure numbering, but the following ones weren't.
The time signatures are set to be hidden.

was the measure dialog box. The only thing I changed was the width.
"Include in Measure Numbering" should have been a - , not a tick. It's
worth looking out for this.

was the the result. Note that it's hidden the time signature in bar 1
of the whole piece. This is obviously a bad thing! The other thing
that happened was that all of the selected bars ended up being counted
in the numbering region, because the first one was.

* Jeez it's annoying not being able to use plugins in parts. For things
like harp pedalling or cautionary accidentals that you don't want in the
score, it is very annoying.

* I tried also extracting a part to a separate file (the 'old fashioned'
way) and the strange thing that happened there was that the last two
bars totally disappeared. Then I added to new bars at the end to
reenter the music manually - and it added the missing two bars!

* Is there any way to enter a text block (not a text expression) to
appear just in one part? I entered it off the page and dragged it in to
the part in which it was needed, but surely there must be a better way.

It's well worth checking Finale 2007 parts very closely I think.

On the positive side, I recently bought a new iMac Core 2 Duo and Finale
2007 flies on this machine, even using a dual monitor setup which
traditionally has been slow on the Mac.

Don't have a solution to the custom install question, sorry.
However, since the added bandwidth is relatively cheap:

First the obvious; they should be in their own folders in
applications -> finale XXX -> Libraries. Might provide you with a
place to check. Also, does Maestro show up as an option when you
select the "document" pull down and choose "set default music font".

If that brings no joy, Coda released an update for the 2006 default
fonts which you can download here:

That might bring things to life.

Repairing permissions never hurts.

Also another solution is to clear the font cache There are several
utilities to do this, including Font Finagler.

[Finale] Early impressions of 2007

2006-08-18 Thread Matthew Hindson Fastmail acct

FWIW (not much most likely), I installed Finale 2007 and gave it a go today.

It's interesting going from 2005 to 2007 on the Mac. Some things are
much slower (scrolling up the list of custom smart shapes - g), but
other things (e.g. selection tool) seem more responsive, thank goodness.

There are some small touches which are much appreciated: e.g. we can
finally resize the handles on the Mac, which makes life easier on big
screens. Also finally being able to put the instrument name
automatically in the part will help just that little bit more.

Are the new resizing-icon-when-mouseover behaviours of the tool palettes
a new behaviour in Finale 2007? I find it distracting somehow.

I wish they had fixed more annoyances:

* The Text Expression and Articulation boxes are still non-resizable,
and ridiculously small for modern screen real estate;

* The new placement of the Enharmonic spelling within Preferences is
further away from the action, as is the Measurement Units now in the
View menu;

* I find the Apple-shift-option-H kbd shortcut for Show/Hide doesn't
work most of the time;

* There is no keyboard shortcut for "Edit Score"?

* Is it possible to have a staff style display in the part but not in
the score?

Altogether so far, it seems like a worthwhile upgrade in many respects.

Just my 2c

Agreed 100%. At times I am bewildered by the good folks at Makemusic

not subsequently improved.

A case in point: the Space Systems Evenly function. There was an
