Re: [Finale] O.T. The Internet and the Democratization of Music Publishing
While the special was lengthy, and it covered a lot of turf in 2 hours, it was essentially showing how the notion of democratization in our daily lives are now because of the Internet. I've written about this before, and I'm curious about any opinions and thoughts about this process. I find it amazing that anyone with a computer, music notation program can essentially publish music at will, and give the big boys a run for their money. I, too, find this an interesting subject. I am not sure just how much of a run for their moneywe self/independent publishers can give the big guys. I have had some success in self publishing with sales of most of my pieces at one time or another. But even with great reviews it still takes a great deal of money to shop yourself your goods. I've been through the direct mail bit as well as advertising in the trades and even had a booth at some conferences. These are very expensive endeavors which, for someone like me, is just entirely too expensive to maintain. It has given me some insight as to why the big guys are so picky. Personally I have thought about and would love to see something like an independent music publishers co-operative which, if large enough, might actually give the big guys a run for their money. In my conversations with music teachers (much of my music is geared to the education level market), they are very receptive to new material and would like to see more variety available to them. So I think, at least for the educational market, the door is ajar. Re: [Finale] OT: works in octaves, unison etc.
I don't know if this is what you are looking for, however, I wrote a work back in 1989 based on the model of the DNA molecule as it is spinning. The work, entitled 3.4/20/34 Angstrom, is 6 1/2 minutes long, for string quartet work and is atonal. There are two movements (one for each half of the molecule). The parallel movements between the instruments move from clashing intervals such as major 7ths to octaves and back. Let me know if you would like to take a look at the score. [Finale] inconsistent barlines
Hello, I am working on a score for full orchestra. The score is complete but when I print it to .pdf, the bar lines for part of the score are darker than other parts. I first noticed it in the perc parts where I reset the staff lines for two of the 5 staves to a 3 line grid. The bar lines for these two staves extend slightly above and below the staff. When I print to pdf, these two barlines are darker than the rest of barline which extends through the entire percussion section. In fact, the barlines for the woodwinds brass are also darker than the strings the other staves of the percussion section. It looks like there was a second barline drawn over the first one for the ww, brass the two perc staves, making them darker than the others. The paper printout doesn't seem to be affected, just the pdf version. Is there a setting that I missed which needs to be adjusted? Nick Raspa AOL now offers free email to everyone. Re: [Finale] inconsistent barlines
I tried viewing it in pdf form with the built in OSX preview program, I exported a page in PICT format viewed it with the Preview program and both had the darker lines show up. However, when I viewed the pdf in Acrobat 7 reader, it looked just fine. It appears the problem shows up with the Preview Program. I tried adjusting the barlines and that does seem to have an effect. I went into staff attributes. staff setup and changed the barlines for one of the percussion staves that is affected. I changed the top barline from 24 to -64 and the bottom barline from -24 to 64 (I just picked the number 64 to see what would happen). Now when I view the pdf in the OSX Preview Program, the dark part of the line for that particular staff is significantly reduced. The paper printout is still unaffected. I could probably get it to disappear completely if I enter a large enough number. I suppose I could adjust the barlines enough so that they disappear and are no longer a problem, however, I don't seem to have the sfaff setup option available to me with the standard 5 line notation option selected. So the only barlines it seems I can change would be the ones where I have staff:other selected such as in the percussion staff. That doesn't seem like a real good solution. Is there something, perhaps I missed when setting up the group barlines? My concern is that I make perusal scores available in pdf format, so I don't want these dark lines to show up at all. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: finale@shsu.edu Sent: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 4:43 PM Subject: Re: [Finale] inconsistent barlines On 28-Mar-07, at 4:35 PM, dhbailey wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I am working on a score for full orchestra. Re: [Finale] Pdf to potential performer - advice needed
If you have the full acrobat, you can create a pdf with security restrictions. One of the restrictions would be to not allow printing of the document. An artist has contacted me and requested a score of a yet unpublished composition of mine. This person, previously unknown to me, appears (on line) to be well qualified as a potential performer of the work, and I would like to get the score to him. I seek advice on the following: - Is there an advantage in sending either a pdf or a hard copy? - What options are available, other than placing a copyright notice on the work, to help restrict the use of this score to the stated intent of this artist (consider the piece for performance)? One thought I had was to put some sort of watermark, or the like, on several pages of the score. Has anyone done this? Is there some way to do this in Finale so that it would show up and print out in pdf form? Re: [Finale] pdf printing resolved
I suppose that is possible. I used three different programs to create the various files. I also have graphics, created in a draw program, embedded in some of the Finale documents. I thought, however, that creating a pdf would take care of all that. I have, in the past, created web pages which require that certain documents referenced in the web page are located in the same folder. I didn't realize pdfs work in a similar fashion. Re: [Finale] pdf printing resolved
The pdf printing problem, at least for me and for the time being, has been resolved. I just returned from my 3rd trip to Kinkos and they were able to open up the pdf file on their windows operating system. In order to resolve the problem, I took the good advice I received from this list and converted all my files first to postscript and then used the distiller to create the pdf for each file from those postscript files. I still assembled the resulting pdfs in acrobat v4 as I did before and the clerk at Kinkos was able to open the file with no problems. Thanks to all that responded to my cry for help. By the way, the original error message Kinkos received on the first file was unable to locate original file. I still don't understand why a product. touted as universal would require such a workaround. The pdf files seem, at least in this case, to act more like a host rather than a stand alone file, however, at least now the problem is solved. Thanks again to all who responded! Re: [Finale] pdf printing
Hello to all, I have prepared a music book for printing and decided to do it off-site. I prepared all the music pages in Finale and converted them to pdf. Other pages such as the cover and table of contents, etc. were prepared using other programs, such as Photoshop, and also converted to pdf. Using Adobe Acrobat (v 4) I imported all the pages and assembled them into a pdf booklet. When I took them to Kinkos, they were unable to open the pdf document on their windows based system (I think they use Dell?). However, they were able to open up the book on a Mac they have on site. The Mac, however, is not networked so they cannot print from it. They can only print from the windows based system. The clerk there said he thinks that you have to specify a platform when you save the pdf document. This does not sound right to me. I thought Adove designed the pdf to be available on any platform for reading and printing regardless of the platform you create it on. Am I wrong or am I missing something basic here. Re: [Finale] pdf printing
I double checked my file and it does have a pdf extension - which I would have expected since it was created using Adobe Acrobat. The version of Acrobat they were using was Acrobat 7 and I thought that may have something to do with it (since I am using v 4), however, older files (such as v 4) should be accessible by newer versions (just like Finale). I haven't tried saving the files, created in other programs, as EPS or postscript and then converting to pdf. I'll have to give that a try. It just seems odd to me. Once you have a file created in a particular format, as in pdf, it should behave as expected. But maybe I shouldn't be so picky! Thanks. I will try converting the ancillary files to postscript and converting them to pdf before adding them to the book. I wonder if I will have to do the same with the Finale files? Hello Holiday greetings, I am working on some jazz piano charts and I have one which has a two measure coda at the bottom of the page. Currently I have the measures just before the coda separated from the coda with a double bar line. Since I have doubled up instruments on the staves, I occasionally have a measure where one instrument is completely at rest but the second is playing. Perhaps that is the root of the problem. I used simple entry to put the rest in and it would simply disappear when I changed to speedy (to make the vertical adjustment).
