[Finale] playback in Finale 25

2019-11-20 Thread Brian Oflaherty
Hi---I can't do playback in Finale 25 using Windows 10. Could it be a Rewire
issue? I've noticed that the option for Reset Rewire is grayed out. I also have
Cubase 9. Could there be an incompatibility issue there?

Re: [Finale] Playback problem

2019-03-04 Thread Lawrence David Eden
The values I am describing are found on the MIDI keyboard itself. MIDI
instruments can be assigned a numeric volume level from 0 to 127 on my keyboard
(Kawai.)
As others have mentioned here, you can use the MIXER found in WINDOW Menu to
assign volume, and panning.

[Finale] Playback problems with older files

2019-02-25 Thread Eric Fiedler
Has anyone in the congregation had this problem?
(FinMac25, OS 10.12.6)
We recently opened an old file from 2002 (opened/saved in FinMac 2012, then
opened/saved in FinMac 25), made some formatting changes, and saved to FinMac
25. Now we can’t get the file to play back over Midi. In the Midi-setup dialog
box the midi keyboard has been selected for both input and output (as always),
but there is still no playback. We have had this problem before, always with
older files. What are we missing?
Thanks for your input.

Re: [Finale] Playback on Third Ending Repeat

Hello, I’m trying to set up a repeat with up to a third ending but got muddled

I think the way you solve your problem depends on which version of
Finale you're using.

With Finale 2014 or 25 and 26 this is the procedure:

When you place the repeat sign, set it to to "play section 3 times."

Whan you place the 1, 2 ending bracket, edit the ending to place the
numbers 1, 2 inside the bracket, then set the Target to be a measure #,
and set that for the measure number of the start of the 3rd ending.
Check the box "Skip Ending if Ignoring Repeats."

With older versions I think the settings were a bit more complicated. I
think I remember that I had to set the repeat sign to "always jump" and
set the target to measure 1. If you want only a smaller section
repeated, then you have to set the target measure to be the number of
the first measure of the repeat section.

In older versions (I just checked with 2003), when you define the repeat
sign, you had to set the total passes to how many times you wanted the
section to repeat as well as the target measure number to jump back to.
For the ending bracket, in the definition box which opens up when you
place it, enter the target measure number (i.e. the first number of the
3rd ending) and then click the check box "Multiple . . ." and in the
dialog that opens up, place 2 in the first box and 1 in the 2nd box.

That should give you what you want. For the versions between 2003 and
2014, or earlier than 2003, you may have to start with the information
I've just given you and work from there to figure out the solution.

Good luck!

[Finale] Playback of glissandi

2019-01-06 Thread Michael Lawlor

Finale 2014.5

I have just started a work for string quartet that opens with a set of
six chords, joined together by glissandi.

I entered the notes and listened to the playback and it sounded fine.  I
used the smart shape tool to add glissandi, but when I tried playback,
there was no sound.  I deleted the glissandi, tried playback and it
worked, but the pitches that sounded were all wrong.  I deleted the
glissandi and tried the pitch bend and then the guitar bend tools.  They
played back for the first two shifts but not the rest and the pitches
kept on shifting and I did not like the result, which was very
disjointed.  I tried the glissando tool again, but there was no sound.

Does anybody know if I am doing something wrong or does it not work?  I
have tried glissandi in the past with older versions of Finale and they
worked some of the time but were always problematic.

Regards,

Michael Lawlor

David and Dean,
Thanks for your suggestions. Nothing worked. Finally, I copied the music from
the affected staves, deleted them, reinstalled them, and pasted the music back.
Success!
Go figure.
Every once in a while the dot on my numerical pad stops working (creating
dotted notes). The period key in the regular keyboard works as a standin. The
next time I start the program everything is back to normal.
Or not.
Just some of Finale's inscrutable mysteries.

Two possible issues: Check the Score Manager to make sure any potential
transpositions of a minor second are inexplicably are not set. Also that score

Any ideas?

My first thought is to ask if you have restarted Finale and re-opened
the project and does the problem still persist? Have you rebooted your
computer? Sometimes those things fix playback problems.

My second thought is to ask if you have entered any expressions at the
start where you took an existing expression, duplicated it and edited it
to appear as you wish? Is it possible that the original expression had
a playback attribute defined which might cause the problem?

After that I'm out of ideas.

I had been trying to say that but had forgotten the procedure using the
midi tool itself.

Thanks!

Make sure you're not saving Midi volume data with your controller.

Try this:

Go into the Midi tool (not the Midi/Audio menu).
Dismiss the human playback message that comes up.
>From the Midi Tool menu, select "Edit Key Velocities".
Select the entire document (CTL-A on Windows).
>From the Midi Tool menu, choose "Clear".

Now try playback.

If it works, you may have old Midi data in there, or you may have recorded the
velocities from your Midi keyboard.

Re: [Finale] Playback problem

2017-08-31 Thread John Hyde
Dave et al.
  Thanks for the suggestion
All my input is done with a midi controller
The parts sound and stop sounding at unpredictable moments..
When I first load the file it usually plays all the parts at normal
volume then cuts out so that one might hear parts faintly if turned up all
the way.
On repeated playing without other tweaks maybe I get another bar then
it all cuts out (or almost) or one part will continue to play.

There are no expressions at this point except for the tempo marking. That
one is hard to forget about changing the play back setting since it is
usually playing a tempo that I have already rejected.

If I scroll ahead and start again I get a few notes then it goes down
like at the beginning.

Just tried

I play with options under the Midi/Audio menu. It gets a bit better at
least one or two parts play after going back and forth between “play
through Audio unit” / “through MIDI” or under the “Device set up” sub menu
between “MIDI Internal speaker”or “MIDI Through”.
I go between “Smart synth “and “MIDI” for the playback option under the
“Midi Setup” sub menu.
Trying to get something working by tweaking things with the volume
controls on the
Studio View option actually did more that I hoped for.

My best result was just now when I pulled up the file in question just
now.(other files were doing stuff like this but not so dramatically)
I played all parts for 18 measures and the Organ part stopped sounding for
the last 4 measures of what I have in so far.

Just tried Documents/Playback and Record Options/ and “reset dynamic
markings”
I thought that I had started a new file though the project started in
another one.
 Worked the whole 23 measures!

tried MIDI Audio/Human Playback /Human playback preferences/ Dynamics/
changed from “automatic” to “continuous controller “ and lost tie audio for
the Sax part about 2 measures in.
returned it to “automatic” and no change. Fiddled with levels on Studio
view and can get the sax part sounding for as much as 9 measures. Hard to
see a relationship between what I do and what is working. Will someone
remind me about what the improvement is between this version
and Finale ’14?
Thanks,
 John

Am I correct in assuming that all other audio from other programs works
just fine with no dropouts or fading?

I'm confused by your comment about "At the moment the organ and the sax
are coming through but the guitar is gone. This is particularly
irritating since I am also the guitarist." Does that mean you have
recorded the guitar part as audio instead of using notation? Or are you
just frustrated because you can't hear the part you're supposed to
eventually play once the piece is finished?

In any event, the first thing I would check would be your use of
expressions. Does the disappearing audio happen at the same place in a
score every time you play it back? Is there an expression at that
point? Might it be one that you created by taking an existing
expression and copying it and then editing the appearance of it but
forgetting to also edit the playback effect it might have?

If the places where the audio disappears varies from playback to
playback of the same score then I don't have any suggestion. If it's
always in the same spot then it's something in the score.

Did you enter the parts using a midi controller and hyperscribe?

The next place I'd check would be your Human Playback preferences. Do
you get the audio drop-outs if you have HP set to none?

In the Preferences dialog is a panel for Human Playback where you can
select whether or not Finale incorporates the recorded MIDI data. The
default, at least in the Windows version, is to have Human Playback
ignore the recorded MIDI data for Continuous Data, Velociy, Start/Stop
Time, Tempo. If any of those have been changed to "Incorporate Data"
then try changing those.

I hope others chime with advice -- this can be such a frustrating problem!

Good luck!

[Finale] Playback problem

2017-08-30 Thread John Hyde
Hi:
I’m running Finale 25.4.0.155 on a MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.6

Upon upgrading I had more that the usual trouble getting the software to
see the keyboard but I can kluge around it by opening the file ,them
closing it and restarting the computer.

What’s driving me crazy is that on playback the volume will drop down
until it is practically or in some cases actually inaudible. I am currently
working in a piece for pipe organ, tenor sax and electric guitar.
Sometimes the horn and the guitar come through fine but part or all of the
organ disappears. At the moment the organ and the sax are coming through
fine but the guitar is gone. This is particularly irritating since I am
also the guitarist.

The volume drop problem goes back at least as far as 2010 when I was
working on an old power book.
Having the problem to the extremity of “ disappearing audio parts”
me be as recent as my last system upgrade.

 Any thoughts?

I always eventually use an expression to set a tempo, but usually hitting
"stop" in the playback window makes that box available again when it's
grayed out.

If your have stopped the playback before it reached the end of the file, you
cannot change the tempo setting in the playback window. You may start the
playback at a measure # near the end, let the playback finish itself, and then
edit the tempo setting before starting a new playback.

[Finale] playback weird problem

2016-11-29 Thread Haroldo Mauro
Hi, I’m transcribing a piano piece for a string quartet. I have six staves.
Four strings plus a grand staff in the bottom for the piano part, so I can just
see it while I write the string parts, but both piano staves are muted In the
Score Manager Window so they don’t sound in the playback. Now... this weird
playback problem is driving me crazy: every now and then the Viola playback
volume gets really low in the last written measure--whichever measure is the
last written and the following one is empty. It gets so low I can’t hear it
with the other strings. But if I enter a note in the subsequent measure the
volume gets back to normal. However, to make things worse, even entering notes
un the next measure I’m able to hear. Any ideas? I’v tried copying everything
and pasting into a new file, but no luck. I also cleared MIDI data for the
whole viola part. Thanks for any suggestions.

set up, and in Finale’s Device/ Audio Setup. I had missed the Finale setting
that had become reset by the OS upgrade (and was never set correctly in v25).
Now all is well. Just one of those things that needs to be set correctly in
two places instead of one.

I found that some file's settings where changed after installing Finale's
2014.5 (couldn't say for the very last version); in a couple of cases I
realised changes under the MIDI/AUDIO menu where 'Play Finale Through Audio

[Finale] playback issues

2016-09-26 Thread Chuck Israels
Hi all,

Called MM for an answer, but they are closed for a meeting. Perhaps there’s
someone who can tell me why Finale playback (Mac, Sierra, Finale v25) will only
play back through the internal speakers when the device on the USB output is
selected in the Mac audioMIDI setup. This USB output device is working for
other playback (iTunes), just not for Finale. When I go back to Finale 2014.5,
I can’t get any output at all. (This only since upgrading the OS. It was
working fine through the USB output before.)

Help?

Thanks,

Chuck

Re: [Finale] Playback Doesn't Stop at End of Piece

I have had the same problem. It seems to be the result of a note not being
stopped - for example, a tie which is not tied to another note or an
uncancelled accidental.

[Finale] Playback Doesn't Stop at End of Piece

2015-08-22 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Having a weird little problem with Finale 10 on Mac.

The playback always used to stop at the end of every file. For some reason,
now when it reaches the end of a file, it just continues, counting time,
until I click the stop button. Not a huge problem, but it's a little
annoying and I wish it wouldn't.

I have playback controls set to play from leftmost measure to end of piece.
Anyone have the same problem? Any suggestions?

Best,

The way you describe is the way I have mine set up.  You set the MIDI/AUDIO -
Device Setup to the MDID channel that has the piano sound assigned to it (not
Smart MIDI).  I think that will work the way you prefer.  Sometimes, when you
change pitch in a staff with Speedy from a note that has been already entered,
the sound of that staff will play, but mostly I think this works the way you’d
like it.  Hope I understood the question and that this helps.

[Finale] Playback in Speedy

2015-06-16 Thread GERALD BERG
Hi all

Sometimes I prefer a piano sound while in Speedy entry mode and  'written'
instrument only for when I hit the Spacebar for Playback. Let's say violin for
the written instrument.
Right now while in Speedy entry mode,  inside of the Speedy window frame,  as I
manually change a note the violin plays.   I just want plain old piano.
Is there  a way to accomplish this and still keep the Spacebar for Playback on
violin?
Thanks in advance. GJB

If your keyboard has a pitch bend wheel, move it all the way up or down and
then let it return to zero. (Not sure what causes this glitch, but when it

[Finale] playback transposition

2015-05-17 Thread Ryan
Finale is playing back transposed pitches when I enter notes in speedy
entry. It's happening in one instrument now (bass), but happened earlier in
piano, too.

FinMac 12c. OS X 10.8.5
Garritan Instruments

I can solve it by opening the score manager and switching that instrument
to SoftSynth and back again.

Any idea what causes this? It's a real pain when I'm trying to play back a
section for note checks!

[Finale] playback question

Hi everyone,

What is the best way to mute the playback of several measures (only) of a
harp part in an orchestra score? Would love to show layer 1, and listen
only to a hidden layer 4 in these measures, but so far the solution is
evading me. Finmac 2011.

[Finale] playback settings/options

2014-06-30 Thread Don Hart
Occasionally certain aspects of human playback, normally only realized when
playing via the playback window, are also heard when playback is initiated
by holding the space bar and clicking in the score, a convenient method
requiring no wait for pre-processing. I'm working in a score now in which
pizzicato and arco are being played properly during space bar/click
playback (normally they are not) and I have no idea why. Is there
something I've accidentally enabled or is this just a Finale quirk? Mac2011

Thanks in advance for any insights into this.

[Finale] Playback Strangeness

2014-05-29 Thread Neal Gittleman
Greetings…

Using FinMac2014a…

I was working on an orchestral file today, making some changes to glissandos in
the Harp part. Some glissandos were showing up strangely in the part when they
were OK in the score and vice versa, so I decided to extract the Harp part into
a separate file and tweak the glisses in the extracted part.

Now, when I go to play back the score (from the main file), the only part that
plays back is the Harp.

Any thoughts about what I did wrong and how I can get everything to play back?
(Not a BIG deal, since I only use playback for proofreading and the thing is
done now, but it’s a mess-up I’d like to avoid in the future, if possible!)

Thanks…

This happens to me when two instruments are sharing the same MIDI channel
and they hit the same note at the same time. The answer (for me) was to
give them a separate channel each.

Never had these problems before:

In the middle of playback some staves get "stuck" and keep holding the same
note(s) until Finale is closed. Or, while playing, inexplicably starts to play
from another spot, on top of the current playback.

And BTW: is it possible to prevent arpeggio-ing of every pizzicato chord in the

Re: [Finale] Finale playback help

2013-10-19 Thread Michael Mathew
Greetings!

I purchased the Berklee School of Music's book on Finale and worked through
most of the book. The book is updated for Finale 2012 and I picked up a ton of
different ways of using Finale. There are some excellent suggestions on how to
work with the percussion section, also, of course.

I have an iMac with the most recent OS and Finale 2012c.

What I have done is, on the percussion track, play up and down my midi keyboard

The last-ditch option is to have two files, one for playback and one for

It definitely sounds like a buried MIDI message to me. It seems Finale is
sending a pitchbend or transpositon command on one channel, your keyboard
will stay in that state until either you send a correcting command or you
reset it. Switching the keyboard on and off resets it, or it can be done by
sending a software GM reset command, but sadly there is no easy way to do
this with Finale.

Do you have "Chase from First Measure" selected in the box against "Dynamics
and Markings" in the Playback Settings window? If you don't, then playing
back with the spacebar will cause Finale to use the current pitch setting it
last read. Playing back from the Play control window will normally start at
the beginning anyway.

Can you identify the measure or approximate place where the transposition
occurs? First check any expressions there that might have a playback effect
causing this. It's easy to use an expression that was set previously, maybe
even in a different file. If that doesn't cure it, with the MIDI tool
select the measure(s) and press the backspace key. This will delete all
MIDI data, visible or not. Remember to reset the keyboard before testing
each time.

Re: [Finale] Playback Weird Behavior Playing a Semitone Lower

2013-05-10 Thread Phil Buglass
As a long-time trombone player, serving in a
(British) army band during the 70s and early 80s,
I was wounded and unable to play for some
time. Not wanting me to go to waste, they had
me on percussion, mainly tymps - I couldn't play
drums as it required coordinating 3 things at
once... I could do both hands, but if I started
trying to use my foot too, everything went
rapidly sideways...Anyway, while rehearsing
for a very important concert (a Royal visit...),
I had to finish off one piece with a dramatic
flourish and a nice forte-piano crescendo
roll. While playing this (fortunately during a
rehearsal), the pedal mechanism on the tymp
started to slip, giving me a really interesting glissando.

I thought it was good, but the boss didn't agree...

Phil.

Unfortunately it happens even if I change instruments; I tried to reassign new
instruments and selected a new channel too, but the problem still lays there.
Probably there's something corrupted as some of you have suggested; I'll
probably rebuild a new document and copy paste just the notes hoping this
workaround 'll work but, nevertheless, I'd like to come to an understanding of
the problem.

I used to have this problem form time to time and found that quitting and
restarting Finale (which reloaded the instruments) often cured it. You might
also try Reassign Playback Sounds from the MIDI/Audio menu. If that doesn't
work, you may have a corrupted preference file. Deleting that and rebuilding
your preferences would be the next thing I'd try, if those things didn't work.

Re: [Finale] Playback Weird Behavior Playing a Semitone Lower

2013-05-09 Thread Giovanni Andreani
I've answered back to early!
The keyboard is turned off and all of a sudden finale is playing back with some
instruments transposed a semitone lower.
My last action, before malfunction reappeared, was closing the Playback
Controls window and starting playback with space-click!
Reeboting my Mac now...

I've got some staves playing back a semitone lower than how they should be

Quitting and reopening finale doesn't fix the problem.

Re: [Finale] Playback bug

It just happened again now as I'm working on a score. It turned out to be a
stuck space bar, since it works fine after I hit the space bar a couple of
times. However, it happens EVERY time I switch from Playback to editing the
score. A real nuisance!

Are you sure you're using a tie, and not a slur? Slurs will be restruck; ties
won't.

The only time I get a tie restriking is when I tie to a note in another layer.

I have had this happen many, many times. It's directly related to the stuck
key metatool bug that has been long, long-standing. A complete Mac restart is

Short of a reboot, try running your fingers across the QWERTY keys several

Re: [Finale] playback of grace notes on the beat

2012-12-09 Thread SN jef chippewa

>Teasing is bad habit, so please tell us.

ha! ok.

very simple, another trick with hidden tuplets, this way the grace
note appears on the beat, the "real" note right after. 2 tuplets are
needed, as an example, an eighth note grace and a quarter real note.

tuplet 1 -- 1 8th : 1 64th (or 32nd, depending on your spacing needs)
tuplet 2 -- 17:16 64ths

http://newmusicnotation.com/TEMPFILES/grace_onbeat.pdf

resize grace to your default settings (i use 80, find it much better
looking that 75%), add slash (shape expression) if needed

some fussing, but you could do it once in a scratch staff and
copy/edit as needed.

advantages:
- works with spacing
- works with playback with no fussing
- drag-enclose assign articulations works on this grace note
- contrary to normal grace notes, the H position of the grace is not
fixed in linked parts (great for transposing instruments)

disadvantages:
- little bit of fussing to set the 1st example up
- you may still need to adjust the beat chart if you find there is
too much space before beat 2 (which will be lost if you again run
music spacing)

[Finale] Playback on Kontakt question; Accidentals

2012-11-11 Thread Dana Friedman
Hi Folks:

This is only partially related to Finale, but there are two strange
playback things going on. Ever since I set up Human Playback for one
piece, some accidentals don't play back as written (instead, they
play diatonically, as if there were no accidental marking). It's a
guitar staff. There is transposition, and it's transposed 1 octave up
chromatically. I erased and re-entered one of the accidentals, and it
didn't help. It played back a C natural when C# is clearly there.

Also, the original patch has a ton of reverb added to it. To my
knowledge, I didn't do anything to make that happen. I removed Human
Playback, and the additional silliness with the patch /sample is
still there. I removed the patch, changed instruments, did everything
I could think of, and the patch with reverb is still there.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dana

Are you sure you've created real ties and not just placed slurs which
look like ties? I've never had a problem with Finale not holding the
notes when they have been placed as real ties.

[Finale] Playback weirdness

2012-01-17 Thread Linda Worsley
I rarely use MIDI any more for anything, mostly just listen in my head to
what I write down. I do check for wrong notes, usually by playing sections
(in orchestral scores) or isolating lines to catch the errors. I'm
currently using latest Macbook Pro with Finale 2010.

Here's my problem: lately I've been working on finale scores that are not
my own, and when I play them back (most are just piano parts with a few
solo voices) and it's only playing back a a small part of the full
notation. I know there are limitations on some MIDI instruments, but
piano??? Is there a setting that has caused this? Where did I go wrong?
Anyone out there with help will be very appreciated!

[Finale] Playback timing issue

2011-12-04 Thread David Froom
OK, here is a new one for me.

Fin Mac 2011, OS 10.6.8.

When I play back my current file, the time reported while running (in seconds)
is correct, but when I stop, or when I simply type in a measure to start
playback, the timing is off. There are number of tempo changes, some done with
executable shapes that come with the "ritard," some longer ritards done with JW
Tempo, and, of course, subito changes done with a tempo mark that reads the
number (q = 60, for example, gives a sudden change to quarter = 60).

The strangeness starts just before 4 minutes, just as I reach an accel to q =
60. Just before the accel (m. 62), I'm at 3:48. At the end of the accel (m.
66), the reported stopped time is 3:56, and the time reported while running is
4:01. There have been three tempo changes (with rits) before then, but no
problems. And then it gets very strange, where the reported stopped time
advances very slowly from 4 minutes, but the running time is accurate. For
example, in my m. 73, the running time reported is 3:59, but the time reported
while playing is 4:18. The spread between running time and reported time while
stopped increases. At m. 129, for example, stopped time is reported as 5:22,
but running time is 6:33.

When I use the Utilities/Check Notation/Check Elapsed time on a selected
measure, it reports the incorrect stopped time.

I know the running time is accurate, and the notation and playback are just
fine. This is just a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nevertheless,
especially for someone like me who likes to know often and regularly the exact
minutes and seconds at any spot in my piece.

Why oh why can't Finale do tempo changes in a precise way in a box in which you
can type numbers? I've tried working with the details of executable shapes,
and have found this not only confusing, but, when I take the time and trouble
to figure it out, it works inconsistently and unpredictably.

Any ideas? The Check Elapsed time also reports on the time of a section, which
is strange, since I have no repeat bars. Could that be a crucial hint?

Thank you,
David

[Finale] playback of 16ths that swing

2011-11-28 Thread Don Hart
Hi everyone,

Finmac 2011. There doesn't appear to be a means to have 16ths swing during
playback via human playback. Is this indeed correct? So, am I back to
using "alter feel" in the midi tool for this, or is there a better way?
Anyone know the settings involved to accomplish this with the midi tool?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Finale] Playback Problem after Pizzicato

2011-05-24 Thread Michael Lawlor

I have fixed it!
I created a brand new expression, for which I have only entered the
text,"arco". No setting of key switches or any other parameters. It is
surprising the defaults do not work!

Thanks for all the help.

Re: [Finale] Playback Problem after Pizzicato

Use the keyswitched GPO instruments (the ones with "KS" in the name) and HP
switches automatically from arco to pizz.

Re: [Finale] Playback Problem after Pizzicato

2011-05-24 Thread Raymond Horton
You can do that in a simpler fashion than the overlapping staves, which can
give you trouble if you forget they are there and try to edit. Use
different layers for pizz and arco, or have the expression change patches.

OR

use the GPO samples labels "KS" for keystroke and the expressions themselves
should work. They are tricky, though.
