[Fink-users] Problems with svn-swig-pm588

2010-12-24 Thread Gregory Seidman
I've been banging my head against this for hours. It's making it impossible
to use git-svn. On my laptop running Snow Leopard, the following occurs:

% perl -e 'require SVN::Core;'
Bus error
%

I have perl588 (5.8.8-9), swig (2.0.1-1), svn-swig-pm588 (1.6.15-1), and
svn-swig-pm588-shlibs (1.6.15-1). I tried using the Perl debugger (perl -d
-e 'require SVN::Core;'), but it just spins and chews up CPU. Does anyone
know how to fix this?

If you're using Fink, you're using a Mac, and you might as well use a Mac
native GUI. I recommend http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/

[Fink-users] Packaging pidgin?

2007-06-05 Thread Gregory Seidman
I'm CC'ing Max Horn, package maintainer for gaim (and gaim-ssl), on this
message. It seems that pidgin (the renamed gaim) has released version 2.0.1
and I'd love to see it packaged for Fink. Max, are you still supporting
gaim/pidgin? If not, will someone else package it? If I had the time I'd
volunteer, but I'm pretty swamped these days.

Since Fink is based on Debian, I believe that you can do that same thing
that I would do under Debian: dpkg --get-selections \* will produce a
list of all of the packages you have ever had installed and their status
(install, remove, purge). You can save this list, then redirect it into
dpkg --set-selections to put it back. That will tell dpkg what should be
installed, but you will need to run apt-get dselect-upgrade to make it
happen. You should probably run fink update-all for good measure after
that. I am not 100% certain that this will automatically rebuild
everything it should, but I am pretty certain that the list you back up
will be complete if you wind up needing to install package by hand.

Yes, it's safe to assume that.

Yes, you are. If you want an xterm, it really needs to be run *before*
you exec something. You see, exec replaces the currently running process
with what the process you are starting. This means that the xterm line
never gets executed. You'll also want to background the xterm (i.e.
xterm &) so that the .xinitrc doesn't wait for it to finish before
running the window manager.

The reason you don't get the File menu is that it is part of Apple's
X11.app, and has nothing to do with the window manager. Since you are
not running Apple's X11.app, no file menu.

Note that even with the mistakes you have made, you can still run X
apps. If you open a Terminal window and set the DISPLAY environment
variable to :0 you should be able to run xterm or whatever else
(assuming you have already started the X server).

P.S. Is there any good reason whatsoever to run 4.4 under MacOS X rather

[Fink-users] Qt/Mac and Fink

2003-06-19 Thread Gregory Seidman
Given that Qt/Mac will be released under GPL (see
http://www.trolltech.com/newsroom/announcements/0129.html), I'd like to
make a suggestion on how to handle it. Please comment/critique.

Because Fink is all about Unix software, rather than Mac software, we don't
want to just add the Mac native version of Qt to the repository. Much as we
support Apple's X11, however, we want to make it possible to use the native
version.

First, it should be easy to switch between using the X11 Qt and the Mac
native Qt. This means that there should be a qt3-shlibs-links-X11 and a
qt3-shlibs-links-native which conflict with each other and provide links to
the appropriate libraries. It is therefore necessary to put the X11 shared
libraries in some other package (which qt3-shlibs-links-X11 would depend
on) and directory (/sw/libs/qt3, perhaps?). Naturally, there should be a
system-qt3-shlibs placeholder package for the native version (which checks
to make sure it is properly installed but does not actually do the install,
just like system-xfree86). One can, therefore, have both system-qt3-shlibs
and qt3-shlibs-X11 installed; whether a Qt/KDE app opens in X11 or as an
OSX app depends upon which of qt3-shlibs-links-X11 or
qt3-shlibs-links-native is installed.

This depends, of course, on the dylib(s) in the Qt/Mac framework being
drop-in replacements for the X11-based shared libraries; I don't know
whether that is the case.

Mutt depends upon urlview to find URLs in a mail message and launch

an URL and what command should be run to launch it. My .urlview file
looks like this on a (non-MacOS) unix system:

Well, what does Fink really need that Apple can provide? I think the
absolute best thing would be if Fink package management and Apple's
installer would converge, thus guaranteeing working package removal and
such. I don't think Apple would be willing to do such a thing, though,
since it would break all existing .pkg files.

Re: [Fink-users] Closest Thing to OS X and Fink on Intel?

2002-10-08 Thread Gregory Seidman

Marc Trudeau sez:
[...]
} Can you recommend a Unix distribution for Intel *86, windowing (Finder
} replacement) environment (optional), and package manager combination to
} which my OS X/Fink learning will most directly apply, and by which our need
} for MySQL/PERL/DBI/DBD-mysql will be most readily met?

Fink is a port of the Debian package management system. If you want that
kind of package management on Intel, install the Debian GNU/Linux
distribution. ISO CD-ROM images, which can be burned onto CD easily, are
available for Debian 3.0r0. After installing, you will want to apt-get
update and apt-get upgrade. Note that everything is done with apt-get
and dpkg; the fink command is, unsurprisingly, a Fink-specific
invention.

Incidentally, I am considering moving to Debian for PPC on my Mac. I
haven't tried it yet, but it looks like I'll be able to have my cake and
eat it too. A program, Mac-on-Linux (www.maconlinux.org), makes it
possible to boot MacOS (9.x or 10.x) in a virtual console, an X11
window, or both. It looks like I can have all the benefits of Debian
package management, the huge library of packaged software, and still
have MacOS X there when I need it. I could even run a rootless X server
under MacOS X, but run most of my apps under Linux and connect to that
server.

I understand that Fink doesn't have the manpower that Debian does, nor
the control over the host OS, but at this point I consider my use of
Fink a failed experiment. It just doesn't measure up to Debian, and now
that I know I can have Debian without giving up MacOS X, I no longer
need it to provide a complete environment. I'm not going to uninstall,
mind you, just cut way back on the installed packages (I've spent the
last week trying to get xfree86 4.2.0.1 to install on my 10.1.5 box...
enough is enough).

} Is anyone on the list in this situation of developing on OS X, but running
} an Intel box for production, and willing to trade insights?

Actually, yes. I have been running Apache/Tomcat/PostgreSQL on three
different machines: my Mac at home, a dev box at work, and a production
box hosted at a hosting site (which is actually running a different JSP
container). In general, try not to duplicate the development environment
on the production machine but, rather, the production environment on the
development machine(s). This means get your software up and running on
the x86 box, then configure your Macs as nearly the same as possible.

} Thanks sincerely,
} Marc

[Fink-users] deb-src and apt-get

2002-09-26 Thread Gregory Seidman

I am impressed by just how much stuff is available directly through
Fink. I am even more impressed, however, by everything available from
Debian proper. Naturally, x86 Debian packages aren't going to work on my
Mac.

I was wondering, however, if anyone knew how well it would work to add a
deb-src line to /sw/etc/apt/source.list that pointed to a Debian source
distribution. Would apt-get build-dep work? How about apt-get --build
source? Would the .deb packages it produces install into /sw, or would
it install wherever it would on Debian? Can we leverage the existing
Debian distribution like that?

}
} I really like Eterm. It seems to be much faster in scrolling compared to
} xterm and rxvt, plus it's got a nice-looking proportional
} mouse-wheel-supported scrollbar on the right.
}
} Let me know if you'd like my ~/.Eterm/user.cfg -- it removes the silly
} background images, sets the ANSI colors right, and adds a little bit of
} transparency.

Frankly, I'm pretty disgusted by all the xterm clones out there. At least
rxvt was trying to be a small memory footprint version, but then we got
Eterm and gnome-terminal and Kterm and all the other crap. There are only
two features that (some of) these new-fangled terminals have that xterm
does not: 1) transparency, and 2) multiple windows from the same process.

Transparency is utter crap to begin with. It's vaguely convenient some of
the time with Apple's Terminal, but that's because it's actually live and
displays whatever is beneath it. The best any of these crappy xterm clones
can manage (because of the limitations of X11) is reading the root window's
contents and using it to produce their own pixmap background. Furthermore,
if your background is interesting then it is hard to read the text in the
terminal, and if it isn't interesting then why bother?

The multiple windows within the same process amortizes the memory footprint
of each window, but it doesn't matter. Most machines these days have plenty
of memory, and the xterm instruction memory is shared between instances
anyway.

While the code itself is rather kludgy, xterm (specifically the XFree86
xterm) is one of the most useful, best executed pieces of software I have
ever had the pleasure of using. Want a scrollbar? Set it in an X resource.
Want it on the right instead of the left? Same solution. Want the scrollbar
and menus to look 3D? Put a symlink to libXaw3d.so named libXaw.so earlier
in your library search path, and it will be. Want an absolute minimum of
decoration? No problem. Want to bind keys or buttons to do things (like the
scrollwheel operating on the scrollbar)? Easily done. Want to change fonts?
On the fly? You can do it from a popup menu (granted, it doesn't have a
font chooser... because there are other programs to do that job, like
xfontsel).

[Fink-users] hold flag is ignored?

2002-07-12 Thread Gregory Seidman

It's possible I don't understand what hold means in dselect. Since
orbit-0.5.15-2 consistently fails to compile, I set orbit (0.5.12-1) to
hold in dselect. Now I expect that when I do fink update-all it will update
everything except orbit, since it is flagged hold. This is not the case. It
still tries to update it.

Note that I have added unstable/main to my Trees in the fink.conf and that
I have fink set to self-update using cvs. One way or another, however, I
wish to stay with orbit-0.5.12-1 while updating everything else. I can't
seem to do it with dselect. I can't seem to do it with fink update-all. I
can't seem to do it with dpkg or apt-get. I'm going to try doing it one
package at a time with FinkCommander, but I don't like that as a general
solution.

Any thoughts?

By default, sudo expects the user's password. One can, however, put the
line

Defaultsrootpw

in the sudoers file (run visudo as root) so that it expects the root
password.

There are those who consider this undesirable because it means anyone who
will be using sudo must know the root password and, therefore, could just
as easily become root and do whatever they want. On the other hand, given
the exceedingly few people with accounts on my machine (my gf and me) and
the fewer accounts from which administration is ever done (mine), I would
much prefer that sudo requires as much authentication as root itself.

Incidentally, I have the following set in my sudoers file:

myaccount ALL= ALL, NOPASSWD: /sw/bin/fink, /sw/bin/apt-get, /sw/bin/dselect

This allows me to run fink admin commands from sudo without a password. I
don't recommend it for everyone (it isn't great security), but it's damned
convenient.

} /var/spool/clientmqueue. Can anyone point in the way of instructions (or
} provide guidance) on completing these tasks?

\begin{rant}
I have never been a fan of sudo. Granted, there are occasions when someone
should be allowed to do only certain superuser things on a multi-user
system, but when the number of users on the system is under ten and only
one or two people ever have to do superuser things (as is generally the
case with home-installed Unix boxen), it's just a pain. It does have its
appeal when you set things up not to require a password, e.g. fink and
apt-get and dselect.
\end{rant}

Anyway, to give root a password, do the following (this is for MacOS X...
if you are using pure Darwin you will have to emulate this with nidump and
niutil):

 1. open /Applications/Utilities/NetInfo\ Manager.app
 2. authenticate yourself by clicking on the lock
 3. select /users/
 4. copy the value for passwd
 5. select /users/root
 6. paste over the value for passwd
 7. select /groups/wheel (it will ask you if you really want to save or
whatnot. you do)
 8. are you in the users array? If not, add yourself (New Value, under the
Directory menu)
 9. quit NetInfo Manager (it will ask you if you really want to save or
whatnot. you do)
10. in Terminal.app, su -
11. when it asks for the password, give yours (if it says you aren't in
wheel, quit Terminal.app and start it again... you DID follow steps
7-9, right?)
12. passwd root
13. give root a new password. It is a bad idea to have the same password
for any two accounts, *especially* root.
14. chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers
15. exit
16. move about the cabin normally
