This message is from: claudia galup <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I was at the Southern Pines CDE last weekend and watched Vivian and Winona's absolutely spectacular performance. They won their division in a very competitive field, and looked gorgeous to boot! Of 17 ponies, 3 were fjords, and all did well. Winona and Eline's big finish to the week
This message is from: vivian creigh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Although I didn't get to watch stadium school at Eric Smiley clinic I did film some of the x-country and it went really well. Eric remained totally smitten with the pony , and I was delighted that he continued to view her as just a terrific pony that would be terrific for 20+ years. Saturday Eline competed Winnie at the Beg. Novice level for the last time. We had entered her Novice but chose to keep her at the lower level for one more school as even though she had jumped Novice and Training level fences during the clinic it would do both Eline and Winnie good to keep her at a lower level. It was a good decision as they had 29.5 pen.pts after dressage, clean x-country and one rail down in stadium for first place. What did Winona mean to you?
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ok, you must've thought I directed my last request to the other folks on the list that went to Winona - and not you.. No, if you went to Winona, I'm writing this to YOU. We have only had a few folks send us anything about their adventures to, at, and home from Winona. As we prepare to pull together the winter issue for the Herald we are missing a very important part what we want to include for the 25th Anniversary Celebration piece. We have photos and we have the evaluation and show results. What we are missing is how the event experienced was by those that attended. Unfortunately, Beth and I don't know everyone, and were wy too busy at the event to sit and interview folks in an attempt to get this information while we were there. Please help us. So, here's my request. If you attended, please consider taking a few minutes to email us what the celebration meant to you, what were the hightlights and why (the community, the banquet, the weather (NOT!), seeing so-and-so and their horse that you'd heard about...etc.etc) If you know of someone who might have some intesting perspective - let us know and we can follow up with them. All I'm asking for is a sentence or a paragraph. I'd like to read thru 50 or 100 of these to get the 'pulse' of the event. And, if you are so inclined, write several paragraphs! Please don't post your comments to this list -- Send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] And contact us at that same Email if you have any questions about my request. Winona thank you .... (long)
This message is from: "Birgit Mortensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A little more than a month ago I was busy trying to be ready for my first trip ever to the US. I could only stay for 10 days, which I still regret. But being a board-member in Denmark I simply had to go home to prepare two meetings in the end of October and a general assembly in November. This has been done, so now is time to tell you all how much I enjoyed to be in Winona. It was bitterly cold and windy ... at least outside .. especially the first couple of days, but I must say that you folks compensated for that more than I have experienced in any other country. Some of you I have met on earlier occasions, partly in Norway in May (stallion exhibitions) and partly in Denmark in August (our 65th), and it was great to see you again. But it was also great to get so many new friends in Winona, and to have faces combined with names I only knew from the Digest that was fun too. It was also great to meet European friends from Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland (and since most of us stayed at the same hotel there is also many good memories from the breakfast table and late evening tables .). So many things from your 25th are worth talking about: - I was impressed of the hospitality you showed the European visitors - It was incredible that you could gather so many horses from so far away (here in little Denmark we must sometimes listen to whining, if members have to travel 2-3 hours to take their mare to an evaluation place ..) - Your stallion presentation on the first evening was so interesting - The banquet was great, excellent food and not too long speeches ... And again a lot of people who really seemed to like to have us there, what more can you wish for .. - The evening of dancing fjords was terrific. In 2004 the German association celebrated an anniversary, and at that time I stated that their show was better than every other fjordhorse show I had seen before. Sorry Germany - today I have to say that the Winona show is the number one show. - It was both interesting and educational to follow your evaluation and the many other classes, in many ways different from what we do in Denmark When you visit an exhibition or anniversary in another country it is quite natural that one of the things you take special interest in is, if some horses from your own country are participating. There is not many Danish bred fjord horses living in North America. Green Valley Farm has imported the stallion Kastanjegardens Fernando and the mare Thilde, Pat Wolfe has imported three mares: Hirse Klattrup (now at Olivia Farm), Katrinedals Vanessa and Hojgaards Emmeline. Then there are three (or is it four?) young horses in California, another young horse in Canada and maybe 22 year old Malene Stanstorp is still alive. 3 year old Katrinedals Vanessa and 10 year old Kastanjegardens Fernando were both in Winona. It was fun to see them again, and the number of ribbons they received was truly amazing. Blue ribbons to both of them in conformation, Fernando scored 86 point, which as far as I understood made him to one of the best scored stallions in North America. Apart from that he was entered in a lot of other classes and so was Vanessa. In Denmark she was evaluated as a yearling with good scores, and Fernando has twice been appointed stallion of the year in Denmark. So it felt quite good to be Danish in Winona .. A thing which was not so good was that I had left my camera in Denmark. If any of you has taken some pictures of these two horses I would be very grateful, if you would mail them to me - especially if you will allow me to use them in an article about your 25th I am going to write to the next issue of the Danish fjord horse magazine. Other spectacular photos will also be welcomed. I cannot wait to buy the DVD's, I have told a lot of people how great is was 'over there', and I know they will enjoy to see proof of that. So once again: thank you so very much to all of you (nobody mentioned - nobody forgotten) for some great days in Winona and many wonderful memories. Don't hesitate so send me a mail if there is anything I can help you with or if you are planning to pay Denmark a visit in the future. But don't come in November, this month is awful (grey, rainy - and if you are unlucky cold too, we had our first snow in the beginning of this month, but is disappeared very quickly). The season for our horse events are from April (young horse shows) to September (foals shows). When it comes to 2011 at least three countries/associations can celebrate their next anniversary: NFHR, Sweden and Denmark. I think it will be a good idea to co-ordinate the dates ... That is what the committee & I try to provide. BUT - it just isn't really possible when you come right down to it. For instance - is the playing field the same if it is a hot sticky 90 + degree day & the tests are out in the hot sun & then at another eval (possibly at the same site it is 40 deg & spitting snow. Now take it one farther - is it a level field if you move either of them inside & hold the other one in the heat or cold? I guess what it comes down to is we really can't control everything. Even if we opted for only climate controlled facilities they won't all be the same. Some will have more or less warm up area than others etc. I just am not sure that those that did the test in LaCrosse or out West or wherever had the same elements as Winona and I'm wondering if ANYONE in the future EVER will. Hopefully not. I'm really not trying to hold the committee on the firing block, Albeit, the buck has to stop somewhere. I do believe they thought they were doing the only thing possible and hindsight is 20/20. I think there was a couple other options but I can honestly say that because it's over and i can relook at it. What were they? I still don't know what else we would have done different other than cancel them completely & that wouldn't have been fair either. I also was not on the committee, and I do know how hard it is to make some decisions. I do however think, having a plan B would have been a REALLY good thing. Believe me we try to have one. With the restrictions we had from the facility we just didn't have any other options. We did learn a lot I will tell you that for sure. In the future - if there is another one of these (hopefully there will be) I am sure we will have separate days for the Evaluation (that is what we wanted here but could not get the facility for another day). I really believe it was a learning experience. I am proud of our accomplishments there. It was a GREAT Show Sat. night, we ALL should be proud of it. It was a spectacular event. I can't wait to see the video of it. The evaluation had the most Fjords present that is also GREAT for our breed and the show did show lots of talent out there. I'm all for holding on to the good and the great memories but we also should not overlook "issues" and should really learn from them. That is how you make the next one even better! Absolutely. We are having follow up meetings on both the Evaluation & show side of the event. By the way - don't forget this was the FIRST horse show the NFHR has ever held on its own. Think that is nice for everyone to know and remember. You said: "Well I agree the weather was awful. But as to being a level playing field I think all of the draft tests were on a level field. A lot of people wanted us to stop in the middle of them & move it inside for the rest of them. Now THAT would have been wrong in my mind. Once you start you have to finish as far as I am concerned." This message is from: Susan Cargill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mike, is very correct - we have at least 40 hours of video from Winona. We have coverage of the evaluation, horse show, stallion presentations, Evening of Dancing Fjords and interviews with participants and our European visitors. Its my plan to start with a DVD of the Evening of Dancing Fjords because it will be the easiest and quickest to have ready but I'm sorry Carol - not for Christmas - maybe your birthday. I'd also like to express my thanks to the Show Committee of the 25th Anniversary Show. These people worked very hard to make this show happen. Beth Beymer - Evening of Dancing Fjords (It was definitely a WOW evening - standing room only crowd. Definitely showed the versatility of the fjord - wait till you see the DVD) Betsy Cowperwaithe - Our Horse Show Manager - Betsy is currently a non-fjord person but we have converted her. Cynthia Madden - Promotions (Cynthia was responsible for all the great press we had in local papers and some not-so-local publications. She also was responsible for all the fjord goodies that were available for sale - Sweatshirts, T-shirts, cups and posters.) Debbie Ulrich - Banquet and Hospitality (Debbie was instrumental in locating Signatures where the banquet was held. She helped in planning the meal and the beautiful flowers. She also organized a hospitality booth which held local brochures and information for attendees. Debbie lives locally and was the recipent of many boxes for the Promotions Committee) Howard Fiedler - 25th Anniversary Celebration Program (Howard did an excellent job of selling advertising, organizing some wonderful articles. The program was wonderful) Jana Lower - Show Secretary - Also a non-fjord person but we're still working on her. Linda Syverson-Kerr (Barn Manager - Linda was on the front line with answers for all those questions that were put to her. She cheerfully dealt with those who had lost their reservations or had not made them and a few last minute cancellations. For those of you that don't know - Linda is running for the Board. She would make an excellent Board Member) Martha Martin - International Hospitality (Martha worked with our international visitors - helping them make hotel reservations, travel arrangements. She also put together some lovely gift bags for our visitors) Mike May - Evaluation Technical Delegate and Paperwork King (Mike was our rock - he never complained even though he has a full work load without all the paperwork for the Celebration - Thank you Mike for all the hard work) Pat Holland and Pat Wolfe (The Pat's did an excellent job of planning and executing stallion row. The evening performance went off without a hick up. Good Job) Sophie Fiedler and Phil Odden - Evaluation (Sophie and Phil did a great job of working through some significant adversity - in particular the weather. There have been lots of comments of should have done, could have done, would have done but we all need to remember how much work goes into planning an evaluation and this was the largest evaluation held by the NFHR.) Vivian Creigh - Awards (Vivian ordered the ribbons and special awards (blankets and halters. Good work) Also special thanks to Mark McGinley, Curt Pierce and Kay Van Netta - Mark was always there when we had to deal with some sticky issues. Curt did a great job of getting the 25th off the ground, Phil Pritchard kept us on budget with his questions and Kay Van Netta was always there with encouraging words and a laugh. It was a wonderful 25th Anniversary Celebration - well worth all the work we all put into it. I know there were issues but I've never seen so many smiling and happy faces at a horse show. And.so many well behaved horses. It is definitely a tribute to our wonderful breed. We had a great group of volunteers, people from all over the country, who came to the Celebration and gave of their time - Thank you all for helping. We couldn't have done it without you. On a personal note - I'd like to thank Vivian Creigh who came and took Felix under her wing for me. She showed him for me in the single driving classes, the stallion presentation and rode with Arne Presthaus during an Evening of Dancing Fjords in a presentation of Antique Carts and Norwegian Stallions that Pat Wolfe orchestrated. With Vivian's assistance Felix won Reserve Champion in the single driving class. Thank you Vivian. I'd also like to thank Dave McWethy for driving my ulsdun four-in-hand in an Evening of Dancing Fjords. Dave did an excellent job after a minimal amount of preparation. Thank you Dave. I'd also like to thank Beth Beymer who took the four-in-hand and worked with them in Colorado prior to the 25th Celebration and Susan North (Sandy's mom) who loaned us the wonderful Sara when Sandvik Bella was unable to continue. Also, for showing Felix in Get of Sire where he placed second a

I do hope in the future and I'm pretty sure it is, lessons will be learned and things will be different. We made the only decision we could make. There wasn't any other options available to us. We would have liked to have 2 days for just the Evaluation but the site would not let us in any sooner than they did. We had to beg them to get in when we did in fact. I show in all weather, local here, at hunter/jumper shows, next year, Lord Willing a few eventing competitions, Held OUTSIDE. BUTthese are shows, not evaluations. The cost is way less, their is no record that is as important as an evaluation, AND we are not being judged against the standard, by which OTHER evaluations also held don't have to put up with conditions like at Winona. Carol R. made an excellent point,it's not an equal playing field by any means. Well I agree the weather was awful. But as to being a level playing field I think all of the draft tests were on a level field. A lot of people wanted us to stop in the middle of them & move it inside for the rest of them. Now THAT would have been wrong in my mind. Once you start you have to finish as far as I am concerned. IT WAS JUST PLAIN AND SIMPLE BAD CONDITIONS!!! I agree it was really pretty bad. Is there much that can be done now?? Maybe the NFHR can allow those to redo the test at a reduced rate??? Only for those getting below a 70. Maybe their is nothing more then just learning from it, one thing NO ONE WILL EVERY FORGET IT. Definate memory maker! The Evaluation Committee is going to meet & make a decision on it. Just so everyone knows though - 50% of the horses doing the test got Blue Ribbons. There were 4 Blues, 2 Reds & 2 Yellows. RE: training/winona/etc
This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> After rereading Patti Jo's post and Phil Odden's, the distinction between the weather in Winona and everyday weather came to me. This weather was of "storm" proportions. Think of those films about the hard scrabble lives of folks on the South Dakota plains who are shown hanging onto fence posts in order to get out to the garden to pick the remnants of their garden that was about to be blown away in horizontal winds. It is the kind of weather that only desperate folks would have gone out in, because they know that it would pass shortly. Sure, it was cold much of the weekend, but the winds during the part of the day that the draft tests were being done were awful. Gail I live in East Central Wisconsin, 10 miles from the lake. Seems like it is always windy here. I train horses year round. I do a LOT of it outdoors. Before I built the indoor, I even started many horses in WINTER and have been known to work in wind/rain/snow/bad weather. That being said, I would not have been a happy camper had I had to perform in that weather at Winona The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
training/winona/etc
This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Guess I'll get my two cents in here, since there is GREAT discussion going on regarding the draft test held outdoors at Winona. About training before hand, our disposition of the breed, conditions to hold a test or show, etc First, I want to say, I think it's great we can all discuss. I hope to my adding to it, will only help, educate and encourage. I live in East Central Wisconsin, 10 miles from the lake. Seems like it is always windy here. I train horses year round. I do a LOT of it outdoors. Before I built the indoor, I even started many horses in WINTER and have been known to work in wind/rain/snow/bad weather. That being said, I would not have been a happy camper had I had to perform in that weather at Winona. ANDI might add, AT HOME MY HORSES DO NOT MIND THE WIND. I can not always be sure of that when we go places. Some horses act VERY different off the farm. I had a white gelding named Silas, gorgeous horse, I rode him EVERYWHERE in all types of weather. I know he would not have handled Winona well at all. AT home, I'm sure we would have been ok, but...he gets up with other Fjords around and he went to a LOT of shows, so please don't assume he needed more show experience, the boy was in a trailer going somewhere probably EVERY week! He was not the same horse at the non Fjord shows. BUT...get him around other Fjords and the boy turned into a handful. :-) EVERY horse is different, Ole he would have been 100% fine out there at Winona, but nothing fazes him. Me, on the other hand, would not have been happy. I personally think we pay enough money to get decent conditions to show our horse to the best of their ability and having to perform outside in those conditions would not have sat well with me, sorry. AND if you would not ask a dressage rider to do a test outside, why would it be ok for a draft person I think i would have had to have stratched had I been signed up. Although who wants to lose all their money??? The ONE thing I learned which I'm REALLY glad I did, and I'm sorry for those that didn't know this but in the future perhaps it will help someone. IF.you are performing a test and it's not going well AT ALLL! Stop, tell them you do not wish to finish the test, leave BEFORE finishing and your score will not go in the record book. You are considered stratched. AT least that is what was told to me. MIKE -OR BETH- if that is not correct please correct. It's all hindsight, the committee had a tough decision to be made, what to do. Carol R. made an excellent point,it's not an equal playing field by any means. Can we blame it on poor training, sorry don't think it's that easy. Can we blame it on bloodlines. Maybe to some degree, but not totally, can we blame it on the handler being upset, uneasy, unnerved, again perhaps to some degree, but I know some horses here too would not let it get in their way. Ask Pat H. when she rode my Ole or Hostar and she was full of nerves, they were cool as a cucumber. Can we blame it on someone getting a poor score , so they are upset and making more out of it then what it should be. Don't think so. IT WAS JUST PLAIN AND SIMPLE BAD CONDITIONS!!! Margaret made an excellent point here as well, Our evaluators are good, some are Excellent and if they are not happy with the conditions, I think that says volumes. Is there much that can be done now?? Maybe the NFHR can allow those to redo the test at a reduced rate??? Only for those getting below a 70. Maybe their is nothing more then just learning from it, one thing NO ONE WILL EVERY FORGET IT. Definate memory maker! One last note, I do wish to get on the band wagon about disposition and breeding. A couple of the mares that were GREAT at the draft test. Janet McNally's mare FCF Gyda(born on my farm, sold to Janet after I started her) rec'd a 91 in intro and 85 in advance tests. Also her filly Helga(3 yr old) who I worked this summer for Janet rec'd an 89 in the intro. Helga had ovly 90 days under harness and saddle. Well saddle maybe last 30 along with the harness work. They were unfazed by it. Janet can't get emails on the digest, so I'll brag for her. Janet has a sheep ranch, she does draft work outside year long. BUTHelga just went home about 1+ month before Winona. Was it just the training, I don't think so
Winona Evaluation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I appreciate Beth's thoughtful response on the Winona wind issue. I certainly think that the NFHR trained evaluators, whom Beth is one, certainly considered all the points she raised about factors that impacted on performance. It's been my experience that evaluators are not shy about stating that a horse needs more training, the handler was nervous, etc. However, when a senior evaluator writes several times that wind was a factor in the horse's performance, I think it can be taken literally. As for Alan Merrill's comments, it is indeed sad to see personal attacks return to the List. My concern is about the fairness of holding an evaluation performance test under extremely adverse conditions. I certainly think that moving the riding and driving tests indoors because of adverse weather conditions was the right thing to do. I don't think that the riding or driving results would have been the same if these tests were held outdoors in the 40 mph wind. I think EVERY horse had a better chance to perform when their test was moved indoors. It seems unfair that the draft test didn't get accorded the same treatment as the other performance tests and I hope that steps are taken so a similar situation does not occur in the future. This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia --- The 25th Anniversary Show was simply fabulous. I'm still flying high after having been there and seen it all. -- Every person who worked on this event AND who participated in it, deserves the most sincere and enthusiastic gratitude from all of us. I say that because the entire Fjord world in North America has made a giant leap forward with this happening. Of course, as in any other undertaking of such magnitude, there were things that the committees noticed that might be improved on in the future, but overall . . . It was just about perfect. . -- And I have to say that one of our fondest memories is that of seeing Curt Pierce competing. My goodness, that man has more energy and drive than you'd think possible. -- Everywhere you looked, Curt was either riding or driving. The culmination was the Stallion Presentations Night when Curt showed four or five stallions, both riding and driving --- Once even in a Santa Claus suit. -- It was an incredible effort, and he pulled it off with good cheer and enthusiasm. I was prompted to write about Curt after reading his post in today's Digest about yet again another show he was involved in to promote the Fjord breed. How does the man do it? He's amazing and he's also an awesome ambassador for the breed. This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> At the 2001 stallion evaluation in Nordfjordeid it was spitting snow and blowing. That said, the weather in Winona was considerably worse. One looked out and saw dust blowing, trees bent over. I remember thinking how happy I was that I was not one of the judges who had to stand out in the cold and watch the draft evaluations. It WAS nasty. In Norway, Catherine Lassesen advised me that the Norwegian attitude is that "there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." In Norway, people wear waterproof insulated nylon coveralls routinely, even in town in the beginning of May. Sort of "Carharts on steroids!" The only comparable gear I have seen here is in sailing supply stores. My guess is that the Norwegians would say that a Fjord needs to be able to deal with the weather, whatever it is. I do know that I get a bit impatient with people who have to make excuses for their fancy warmblood that can't possibly perform its dressage test because there is some scary object (blue tarp, white tire, etc) any where near the arena. It would be good to have "No excuses horses." (Maybe a great breeders farm name"No Excuses Fjord Farm?" Or "Norwegian Fjord Horse, the No Excuses Horse." This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am responding to Jo Wilgus's question about inclement weather plans for an Evaluation. First it is important to recognize that an evaluation holds each horse against an absolute standard. It is not a horse show... Hi, I've been reading about the evals at Winona with interest & amusement. I took my mare Libby to our first eval in Libby Montana this last September, so I know all the work that goes into preparing for the evaluation. I can't help but wonder what the Norwegians of old might have said about the conditions at Winona...I thought one of the main attractions and/or attributes of the fjord horse is their versatility and stability? I'm sorry, I just can't imagine an old Norwegian farmer taking his horse out on a blustery fall or winter day to drag fire logs out of the woods and putting up with his horse misbehaving because it was cold and blowing. When I was at the Libby show in Montana this last September we had a guest speaker from Germany and one of the things he quoted (can't remember who he quoted) was that "a Fjord horse must first be a Fjord horse in it's head". We can breed the best looking Fjord in the world, best mover, etc. etc., but if it's not Fjord in the head, you might as well go get an Arab or Thoroughbred or any other half brain horse (although I've had good Arabs & Thoroughbreds). Looking like a Fjord is important, don't get me wrong, but if the horse doesn't think like a Fjord then what do you have? As I understand the evaluation proccess you can always do another one and if you get a better score it'll be put in the book. I also thought it was your choice as to whether you wanted to have your scores in the book anyway...is this not right? I don't mean to salt anyone's wounds, but the way I look at stuff like this is: If your horse didn't do as well as you thought it should, and you think it had to do with the conditions at the time, then your horse was not as prepared as he, she, or it should have been. I honestly believe that if we have a good working relationship with our horses they'll perform for us regardless of what is going on around them. If we don't have that good working relationship, then everything we do is a crap shoot. Re: Winona Evaluation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am responding to Jo Wilgus's question about inclement weather plans for an Evaluation. First it is important to recognize that an evaluation holds each horse against an absolute standard. It is not a horse show where there is a relative standard based on the competitors involved. The principal of an evaluation is that the test is a fair one and that distractions that can influence the outcome of a test should be limited. The goal is to have all horses do the best they can do as they are NOT competing against each other but against a standard. All the performance tests in Winona were scheduled to be held outdoors. However, the riding and driving tests were moved indoors. The draft test was held in very strong winds in the bitter cold. Is that a fair test of the horse ability? If the weather was too bad for the riding and driving tests to be held outdoors, why was it okay for the draft test to be held under those conditions? The evaluators were complaining about the wind and the impact it was having on scores. They did this in writing on the score sheets. I have been on the host committee for two NFHR evaluations and we always had inclement weather plans for outside activities. Apparently this wasn't considered when organizing Winona. The only reason I have commented on this subject publicly is because the co-chair of the Evaluation Committee posted on this List that the "weather caused us a few problems." That is an understatement. Anyone attending the Winona Evaluation knows that weather had a huge impact on the entire event. Margaret A. Re weather during draft tests at Winona
This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia --- I have posted to the Digest two or three times since returning from the 25th, about how absolutely fabulous the show was. Well, from my point of view, it was. But I was inside most of the time and wasn't trying to do an Evaluation Draft Test in the coditions that prevailed. -- I think Margaret Bogie made an excellent point . . . . It wasn't a very fair setting to evaluate performance against a standard, particularly when the results go on the horse's record and affects the medallion of quality level. The evaluators themselves were upset with the conditions and wrote about the wind on their evaluation comments. ~~ The point here is that all the horses doing the draft test that day will have their performance record entered into the Record Book to be compared to other horses who've done the test under more favorable conditions. -- The whole point of the Evaluation performance testing is that the horse's results are judged against The Standard, and that everything else, as much as is possible, is a level playing field. --- If it were a question of choosing the horse that did the best test on that day, then that is a whole different ballgame. So, therefore, the fact that all the horses were working under the same conditions at Winona is not at all the point. What is the point is if all the horses at Winona were working under conditions as close as possible to horses doing that test at other Evaluations. -- As far as I know, no other Evaluation draft test has ever been done under such really adverse conditions. To make this fair, I suggest that owners be given the option of having their results made official or not. -- For those who choose not to have the results included in the Winona 2006 Evaluation, they would have the option of doing the test at a later date. I suuppose another option for the Evaluating Committee would be to note the awful conditions in the Record Book. -- There may be other and better options. NO horse facility on this planet is PERFECT. Not one, no where, no how. I've shown at Washington National, Harrisburg International, QH Congress, Devon, National Western Stock Show, Ft Worth, and just about every state fairground east of the Rockies. Even Rolex has questionable footing this past spring and at the Olympics they had footing problems which eventually led to the death of a great jumping horse. This message is from: Erin Yanish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> One of the greastest memories I will have of the Winona show - is this: Nathan, Pat Wolfe's nephew was sitting on Prydarson and I was right next to him - sitting on Hostar waiting to go into the English Pleasure class - side by side we were - and a lady pushing a baby carriage came right between and thru us...with baby..both horses just sorta looked and sighed..what great horses. Pat Holland I am not a crazy mom! (hahaha) I really wasn't paying attention and all of a sudden someone says, "Do you know what you just did?" Do we really expect anything less from these awsome animals? I think a lot goes out to thier trainers and owners for the marvelous job of working with thier animals so they are this safe to be around! I wrote a story a while back on how I would rest out in the pasture while pregnant (with the above baby), with our fjords. As a breed I believe they know when they can cut loose and play with you, but also when to be gentle and careful. And Mr. May As for the good looking couple in the Norwegian Wedding...I will have to play the bride from now on next to my hubby!! hahahahhaha Thanks for the great time at Winona everyone, we learned so much and loved being involved with the festivites! Evaluation @ Winona
This message is from: "Green Valley Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Evaluation at Winona The NFHR 25th was an event to be very proud of -- from the NFHR Evaluation, Stallion Row, the Horse Show, An Evening of Dancing Fjords. As Co Chairperson of the Evaluation Committee, I would like to thank our Evaluators: Karen Cabic, Jim Havelhurst and Wayne Hipsley (Senior Evaluators) and Beth Beymer, Brian Jensen and Karen Maas for a job well done. They did an excellent job of educating us when they commented on each horse as they were brought back in and presented their ribbons. Thanks to all who participated. This was our largest evaluation to date with 49 Fjords doing 38 conformation tests and 60+ performance tests. The weather caused us a few problems but otherwise it was exciting to see how our Fjords keep getting better and the performance tests are something to be very proud of. Results will be published in the next Herald. Thanks also to those who watched-- we hope it was a great learning experience for you. A big thanks to all the volunteers who helped. I know I will miss many who helped but have to name a few. Alan Merrill who measured the height and cannon bone of all conformation horses and was also in charge of setting up the utility courses with many helpers including Chris Simino, Donna & Chet Thomas and Gary Holland. Sandy North, Else Bigton & PrudenceTruman stepped up to photo all the evaluation horses when the hired photographer had a problem. Roger Cabic, Genie Dethloff, Sharon Makurat and Mark McGinley where always there to lend a hand. A special thanks to Mike and Renee May for doing all the paperwork. I heard good comments from our European guests. Those who had been to America before where impress with the quality of our horses and with the level of our Evaluation performance tests. Winona - stallions and numbers per pictures and more
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear List, I finally returned home from the Winona event - physically Sunday evening the 22nd. Mentally I really don't know where I am. Having left directly from Winona to take Hostar to his home with Melinda Springs in Bellevue Idaho. First and foremost I need to thank my committee of The Stallion Review - Rich and Nancy Hotovy, Mike and Susie Sadlon, Tyler and Dawn Schlickman, Bob Gudknecht and my husband Gary - for their unconditional support and outstanding horsemanship. It's the work behind the scenes that seems to go unnoticed, manly because it was so well organized, and the stallion parade and review went on without a flaw. The above mentioned people many times (through out the entire event - not just the stallion review) flew into "save" mode without recognition and utilized their innate horse sense to prevent mishaps. These are TRUE horsepeople and thankfully my friends. This "group" are the Blue Earth people - the people who are always ALWAYS there for you with heart and give of their time without glory. I also need to apologize to all of you whom trusted me with the stallion row event, that your presentations were not fully felt due to the poor sound system in place Thursday evening. You could only hear the music and scripts if you were in the barns or the bathrooms. After working on this event for 14 months I know all the work and time and effort you all put into your final presentations, and I was greatly disappointed that those watching could not hear what each of you wanted to convey. OK...on to the positives: As far as numbers on the stallions to know whom is whom. #415 is Hostar. He received his blue in conformation and he received a great deal of recognition by the foreign dignitaries as they were greatly impressed by his condition and health. It was a proud moment when the Norwegian Dignitary deemed Hostar the best stallion amounts the stallions presented in the NFHR Evaluation. Although not "official" - considering the Mother Country considered a Dutch stallion standing in North America the best, added a very interesting factor to the mix. #449 is Wood's Sven. A five year old stallion my husband and I purchased 3 months before Winona. We utilized what the NFHR Evaluation was designed for to tell us if this boy should stay intact and he did receive his Silver Medallion of Quality - of which both my husband and myself were very happy with. The star however at the event, in my humble opinion was SF ARVE, owned by and presented by Shiloh Simino and her husband Chris. Arve is a son of Hostar and just go look at picture #13 in the Stallion #3 section of Laurie's pictures..Shiloh drove out from New Hampshire to present with Hostar and he is absolutely one of the BEST Fjords, with the best owners I've ever known. Arve ended up with the Driving Championship and was high scored NFHR conformation gelding in the evaluation. Shiloh and Chris stayed at my place before and after the event and simply put - great - great people, what I feel make up the general membership of the NFHR. Honest, sincere and with a great love of their horse. One of the greastest memories I will have of the Winona show - is this: Nathan, Pat Wolfe's nephew was sitting on Prydarson and I was right next to him - sitting on Hostar waiting to go into the English Pleasure class - side by side we were - and a lady pushing a baby carriage came right between and thru us...with baby..both horses just sorta looked and sighed..what great horses. I need to thank two other people as well -Nancy Barmore and Kathy Monroe, who allowed me to house Hostar Sunday and Monday at their farm near Winona. Due to the ventilation problem at the Winona facility, Hostar began bleeding out the nose Saturday afternoon due to the ammonia in the barns. The Veterinarian confirmed this and he needed to be in fresh air, plus meds. I was greatly concerned because he them had to travel for 3 days - Hostar did arrive in Idaho healthy, and I am very grateful to Kathy and Nancy for their hospitality, care and concern - not only for Hostar but to myself as well. Lastly I have to thank Catherine Lassesen for her great skill in transporting Hostar, Melinda and myself to Bellevue, Idaho. Catherine is also a great horseperson with innate sense and care and concern for our animals. It was a privilege to spend the time I did with her and thank you - thank you Catherine, you know where my heart was left at and I sincerely appreciate how much of yours you gave to me. Hostar is home now.Melinda lives in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, with some of the best horse facilities in her area (Debbie McDonald trains near by). He will stand shipped cooled and frozen and I highly suggest breeding

Photos/Stories from Winona for next Fjord Herald
This message is from: Starfire Farm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I had hoped to take lots and lots of photos at Winona -- and due to our busy schedule and the number of horses we were caring for, I didn't take a sinlge one!! I would have encouraged everyone to send photos for us to consider using for the Winter issue anyway, but now, I'm REALLY needing your help. I spoke with a few people individually while at the show, but I know there are many people I didn't speak with who took photos that might be fun to include. So as not to overload my computer, I'm going to ask that you submit the photos on a CD (or DVD) and mail them to us at: Beth Beymer/Sandy North 2012 Blue Mountain Ave Berthoud, CO 80513 PLEASE -- put your name on the CD, a contact phone number or Email address and please make it clear who gets the photo credit. Please include a note (signed and dated) with the CD that states you are giving the Fjord Herald permission to use your photos. And, don't wait -- do it soon so we have time to look at all the submissions without impacting the publication schedule. Secondly, I know there are some wonderful, touching, heartwarming, humorous stories from the show. (I can think of a few weather-related tidbits too!) If you have a story to share, send that along too. You can write it up as a short article, or just send us an Email. Depending on what we get, we'll figure out how to include them in the Winter issue. We are planning on devoting a significant part of the Winter issue to the 25th Anniversary event -- and the more good photos/stories we can include the better it will be! We'd really like to paint a picture for the NFHR members who didn't make it to the show and recreate it for those of us who were lucky enough to be there. If you have any questions -- drop me an Email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks! This message is from: "oe Wilson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi: Just a quick note from the Wilson's. Winona was spectacular. The weather was terrible, but we all lived. It was wonderful to meet people and horses that we have only read about. I was on serious overload. Thank you everyone for being so kind and friendly to we who are hanger-ons. We love our Fjords but are not in the show mode. On behalf of Jeff Pedersen, we followed him home all the way from Winona til we parted ways at Echo junction in Utah. He went down Provo Canyon and we headed to Logan. Karen McCarthy was with us til after Cheyenne. Jeff's truck developed a hitch and we decided to board and stay in Cheyenne as did Karen and Jackie. It is a good thing because the wind and snow was horrendous. We left there Wednesday after the truck was fixed. It was a fairly mild problem that could have been a mess had he not got it fixed. We left about 12:00pm. Went as far as Rawlins and spent the night there. Next day off to home. When we left Jeff all seemed well and he should probably be home or close to it by now. Again, to all those who worked so hard on the Winona event. Thank you so much. It was wonderful. Winona for me
This message is from: "Pat Wolfe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks Patti Jo. I appreciate the good words about Prydarson. You are correct to say he has all four blue ribbons in the Evaluation Program. In fact, Prydarson is the only stallion in the record book with all four blue ribbons. He has 87 in Conformation, the highest score ever for a stallion in the record book; 88.25 in Advanced Draft; 86.88 in Advanced Riding; and, after a 9 pm Saturday night evaluation in Winona when everyone (except for the judges and Mike May) was at the banquet enjoying a wonderful meal, 91 in Advanced Driving. Also in Winona Prydarson was First Place Stallion in the age four and up class. Unfortunately I wasnt able to show him in the Championship Class Sunday morning because I had to be at work at 9:00 am Monday morning. I drove home 22 long hours nonstop. However, a blue ribbon in Reinsmanship and the Reserve Versatility Horse Award put the icing on the cake for Prydarson and me. Vanessa, my three year old Danish import, also had a great show. I only had her evaluated for Conformation and she received a blue ribbon. In the two and three year old Mare Halter Class she got a blue ribbon. In the Open Draft Classes, she received a blue for the Log Skid and a blue in the Farm Class. These two blues gave her the Championship for Draft. Vanessa also did well in the Maiden driving classes with a second in Cones and a third in Pleasure Driving. The Winona Show and Evaluation was the best ever. Meeting old friends (including horsy ones like Felix and Hostar) and making new friends from around the world was wonderful. The Stallion Presentation was exceptional with all presenters showcasing their stallions in such skilled and inventive ways. We even had Santa Claus. The Saturday evening performance was spectacular. Beth Beymer deserves congratulations. The acts were wonderful making the whole show a great hit. Thank you to everyone who came forward to help me throughout the show. You were very much appreciated. Lastly thank you to the organizers and the volunteers who put in endless hours of time and energy to make Winona the best Fjord horse event ever held in North America. This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I also forgot to write about the evaluation, in my last post to the list. Not only having the big celebration Sat. night, the Horse Show, Friday, Sat and Sunday. We also had a wonderful display of quality Fjords being evaluated. The judges were tough, which is a good thing. Hard to take as an owner some times, but hopefully it will keep our Fjords in high standards. The Europeans presented each exhibitor with a token of appreciation, a book mark and a wall hanging and picked a couple from each test and presented them with a small Fjord statue. That was really cool I thought. Some outstanding scores in the performance tests. I know Janet McNally got a 91 in the intro. draft, and an 85 in the advance with FCF Gyda. Have to say, a mare that was born here and I sold to her after starting her in riding, driving and draft. :-)Plus she also got an 89 with her 3 yr old filly, Helga in the intro. draft. Who was here this year being trained to ride, drive and do draft. That was really exciting to hear as Janet does "real" draft work with the girls at home and both Janet and her girls really know what they are doing. GREAT JOB JANET and girls! I'm pretty sure Prydarson got all blues now in all the evaluation tests. That is an awesome stallion. I'll let Pat W. tell his story about the whole show, cool stallion! I took a mare in for conformation and intro. riding. Owned by Randi Nielsen. Vor Onask received a 75 in conformation and an 82 in intro. riding. I was thrilled as this mare needs her warm up time and it was getting nerve racking wondering if we were gonna get it or not. Luckily they took a break and opened up the arena where i was able to get her focused and listening. She rode beautifully, THANK YOU ONASK and Randi! Takes a lot of work to get your horse ready for the evaluation and if you are not able to do it yourself ,it is really wonderful to hire out and get the job done. Sothat the horse can be shown to it's best ability. Hostar did outstanding in his tests. I'll let Pat H. tell her story as she is enroute out West to bring him home to Melinda Springs. She'll be home next week. Just hats off to him and Pat alike! Many many more wonderful horses and scores and it was really tough at this evaluation having to deal with the weather, limited warm up area, late hours. BUT...I would just like to say thank you to everyone that brought horses, it was very impressive to see that many Fjords being evaluated. Takes a lot of work, money, time and talent and I was thrilled to see so many tests being performed. This message is from: "Dave and Patti Walter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> SECONDS to Mike and Renee -the Show on Sat. Night at Winona was UNBELIEVE, THE BEST SHOW EVER and I am not just talking Best Fjord Show, I'm talking BEST PERFORMANCE BY ANY BREED. JUST AN AWESOME AWESOME SHOW. There are not words to describe how incredible it was to see such versatility, creativity, and best of all DISPOSITION in this breed. I was proud to be in it with my stallion, Fair Acres Ole, we did vaulting off of him with two teenage girls, Keelie Finnel and Megan Holschbach. They did all sorts of moves on him, even dismounting with spread eagles and round off's off of him, I'm VERY PROUD to own such a GREAT stallion to allow us to do WHATEVER we want to and with him. IT JUST MAKE YOU PROUD-watching this show- TO OWN A FJORD PERIOD! Beth Beymer and her crew were outstanding in all their performances, actually just as Mike said A the acts were outstanding, it was just amazing to watch. I don't wish to leave anyone out as EVERY ACT was GREAT!Several times people were giving standing ovations. If that was all we did all week it would have been well worth coming hours and hours just to see and/or be in this event. BUT.that was not all there was, the horse show had SEVERAL outstanding horses in the classes, from riding, to driving to draft, to dressage, it was wonderful to see top quality Fjord horses. I thought the stallion review was wonderful. Believe it ended up to be 27 stallions at Winona. That is quite the record, to all be in one place. They were AL VERY well behaved I might add too. AND let me tell you, we had TIGHT quarters with little to no warm up area, due to cold weather. Sowe all had to warm up with stallions, mares, geldings all together in tight quarters. You really would not have been able to tell which horses were the stallions, unless you looked underneath, they were all that quiet. The banquet was totally enjoyed by all, our European quests were the highlight of the evening. Educating us with their knowledge and joining us closer in our unity as their love for this breed is quite evident. I'm home now, grateful to be here, there is nothing like home, but am thrilled to have been a part of this great event. Lots of hard work went into it. Those in every aspect should know they did a job well done. It never could have come together without all those that volunteered. Some minor problems along the way, some Major weather glitches, BUT...as usual our horses put up with it all and EVERYONE should be proud to be a Fjord Owner! Re: Folks at Beaver Dam Farm getting ready for Winona.
This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Everybody from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -- Jaimie and I are coming to Winona. We'll be doing a presentation of Gjest's offspring in the Stallion Presentation program, and right now I'm frantically writing the commentary on Gjest and the wonderful horses that will be representing him.. -- Starfire Farm will be there with BDF Obelisk (Gjest x Stine - Ene daughter) , BDF John Arthur (Gjest x Holly - Solar daughter ) , and BDF Magnum (Gjest x Holly - Solar daughter) . Sheila Tweedie will be there showing BDF Nora (Gjest x Maryke - Hjerter-Knaeght daughter ) . Kathy Johnson will be showing her stallion, WW Reidar (Gjest x Ranka - Sebastian daughter ) . --- Kathy Spiegel will be showing her stallion, BDF Titian (Gjest x Maryke - Hjerter-Knaeght daughter ). --- Curt Pierce will show Ironwood Blitzen (Gjest x SS Saska - Holunder daughter) for Ironwood Farm. -- I have a feeling I've forgotten somebody, and if so, I apologise. All of us at Beaver Dam Farm are tremendously grateful to all these owners for their efforts to represent our grand old stallion. This week our trainer, Jaimie Benoit and I will work to be sure we have photos and DVDs on all our sale horses. Even after an excellent sale season this summer, we still have a few very nice horses to offer. -- These include the following . . . . A yearling stud colt sired by Gjest who just might turn out to be a big-time winner. His name is FRF BARNIKEL, and this horse certainly has the breeding to be a great stallion. -- He's sired by GJEST out of the imported Dutch mare, Ruth, who was sired by MYRSTEIN, an ELITE stallion in Holland. . -- As you'll see for yourself during the Gjest's Presentation, Gjest produces athletes. Gorgeous horses with superb movement and an incredible work ethic. -- I w as told that back in 1985 while watching Gjest at the biggest Fjord show in Holland. One of Gjest's stallion handlers said to me . . . "Gjest has great movement and great athletic ability. He also has a tremendous work ethic. He passes these things on to his sons and daughters." -- Myrstein was a stalliion very much like Gjest. -- He was built in the same mode. Bob van Bon often said . . . "We just can't find stalliions like Gjest and Myrstein anymore." -- What he meant was stallions with strength and bone. Stallions that could work all day and do it again the next day and the next. -- Stallions with great heart to do the job. -- Stallions that stayed healthy and strong and fertile into old ge. -- Those stallions are few and far between nowadays. FRF BARNIKEL carries these rare genes. He is for sale as a breeding stallion. -- This is a rare opportunity for one of you to acquire the possibility of owning a stallion who combines the best of bloodlines on both sides of the pedigree. -- It's a particularly rare opportunity because the price isn't overwhelming. The owner, Sheila Tweedie from New Jersey is an absolutely knowledgeable and dedicated horsewoman. She is more interested that FRF Barnikel (Barni) go to the right home than she is in any money she might make from the sale. -- Of course, such a well-bred stud colt is not going to be given away, but I'm trying to tell everybody that for this owner, price is not the priority. A stud colt with such a pedigree needs time to grow up. -- The strength represented in this special pedigree is not to be taken lightly. -- The combination of genes (Gjest and Myrstein) could produce a truly spectacular stallion. -- Beaver Dam Farm and Barni's owners are looking for the right situation for him. This would be a farm or individual that has the experience and seriousness of purpose to bring on a young stallion, allowing him to mature, and to eventually prove himself. -- So, if you are that type of person , please come to our stall and talk to Jaimie and Carol. Come and look at the DVD we'll have available on Barni and other sale horses. ~~ Other horses we currently have available are -- VALENA, a lovely Flotren daughter. 6 years old. Absolutely as bombproof and reliable as any horse can be. -- She rides nicely now and is 100% safe for the most timid beginner rider. -- Valena has the kind of attitude and temperament that will make her a wonderful driving horse. Valena is a proven broodmare. PEVENSIE - a Caspain daughter. Caspain is a son of the elite stallion, Myrstein. Pevensie is 6 years old and a proven broodmare.-- This is the easiest horse to ride in the world. She's absolutely dependable on the trail in a halter with leadropes. She's wonderful bareback. -- You can't get braver or more laidback than Pevensie. BRENNIN

Arena footing - Winona
This message is from: Susan Cargill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The indoor show arena, indoor warm up area, outdoor show arena and outdoor warmup area have very good footing. Between the barn and the outdoor arena and warmup area is gravel. If you plan to use only those areas with good footing you will be ok without shoes - but if you plan on driving on the gravel, shoes might be a good idea. For what its worth - my horses that are being shown are coming in with shoes. Susan The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
footing at Winona
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My question is: does anyone know what the surface is like in the arenas/practice areas? The indoor arena has EXCELLENT footingvery very good mixture, I am not sure what the outdoor arenas have as when I was there it was covered with snow. I am certain you will be on gravel moving about inbetween - I recommend shoeing, the horses I'm brining will all be shod. RE: Winona and Erlend
This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Can you take him yourselves in a big trailer all his own, and stop for a day or two every other day? I gather stops are really big in keeping them healthy. Transport is known to reduce immunity, to the point where they use transport at vet schools to induce EPM so they can study EPM. IF they do not transport the horses, they cannot "give them" EPM. Gail .net/~kffjord
Winona and Erlend
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi again, In light of what we are finding out about Erlend, I have to take a long look at Winona. I expect he will be much improved by October, but I still have to consider the long ride. Does anyone know of an Air Ride Transport company, and have a guess about cost? Or is anyone from this coast planning to use one to go to Winona? Or does anyone have any creative ideas about reducing the stress on limbs and psyche? Why couldn't he have waited till November to get old? Bye, Peg Peg Knutsen www.fairpoint.net/~kffjord

This message is from: "Cynthia Madden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I called the Quality Inn last week and made a reservation for a double room. I am hoping to find someone to share with me? I hope some people will stay there because I'm gonna need a ride. I had no trouble making a reservation with them for the NFHR event. 25th anniversary show in Winona
This message is from: Carol Makosky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello to all members of the NFHR. I was just at the winter meeting in Winona and the hotels/motels are filling up fast for the Oct. show. The Best Western is already full for that time, but there are at least 3 others in Winona waiting for bookings. Otherwise it is the small motels and traveling to other sort of nearby towns. I believe you can get all the phone numbers from the registry site. -- Built Fjord Tough Carol M. On Golden Pond N. Wisconsin
