RE: [flexcoders] Cairngorm 2 and mx:States

2006-04-02 Thread Alex Uhlmann
You can do this the same way as you would have done using a ViewStack
approach. As Scott said, you can store the state representations and a
workflow property in your model. The only differences are in your view.
Instead of binding a method to the ViewStack's selectedChild instance,
you could bind a method to the view's currentState property, which calls
a method that returns the state string instead of a Container or
UIComponent instace as done using a ViewStack. The state strings could
be defined in your view's mx:states objects as Scott said.

Best,
Alex

Subject: [flexcoders] Cairngorm 2 and mx:States

As I'm implementing the usage of the Cairngorm 2 microarchitecture on a
project, I came across a question regarding the new Flex 2 States
concept and how to best implement it with Cairngorm. My feeling is the
States should be defined in the ModelLocator. That would imply the Model
knowing more than it should about the views. I wonder if anyone has come
across this matter and would be able to provide any insight.

Thanks,

Matt,

I think you know that the more places there are good information, the
better our jobs are and the more we get paid ;-) I think we could say
that it can enable the the Flex community. It's interesting, Flex is so
much differnet then the Flash community becasue of the application
orientedness of it. More like OS programming.

PS Anywhere where I can add my knowledge to show I know what I am doing, I am all for!

Alex  Alex,

 you can put the data be validated in a model.like this:
mx:Model id=order
email{email.text}/email//email is a

/mx:Model
then define a validator:

   mx:EmailValidator field=order.email/

then write a function in the script tag:

  function confirmOrder(): Void {

if (mx.validators.Validator.isStructureValid(this, 'order')) {
mx.controls.Alert.show(Success!!);
addMember();
  }
else {
mx.controls.Alert.show(Please enter valid data in the fields

[flexcoders] Code formatter for action script

2006-04-02 Thread bkeinan
Hi all,

I am working on a big project using flex for building the client side.
We use the flex builder/SEPY for writing teh action scrip but none of
them support good code formating that allows you to define the way you
want the code to look like (like in the juva plug in of eclipse).
Do any of you knows a good code formatter for action script (free or
not)?

[flexcoders] Putting markers on chart

2006-04-02 Thread Sachin Dharmapurikar

Hi,I am developing a charting application. I am simulating a live chart which is updated after finite interval. X-Axis of the chart is going to have dates and Y-Axis will have Numbers. I want to put a red line marker when the value of Y-axis crosses a particular value. Sample image is attached.
Is it possible to do this using Flex line charting?Thanks,Sachin

[flexcoders] Closable and Draggable Tab component for Flex 2

2006-04-02 Thread jeremy lu

made this during the weekend :-)

*blog entry:
http://ria.richtechmedia.com/?p=356

*demo video:
http://tinyurl.com/zmpsn

*features
-100% based on flex 2 mx:TabBar and mx:TabNavigator component, just
added in needed APIs, so usage is pretty much the same as those two.

-show/hide close button

-close tab when close button clicked (broadcasting closeButton event so user can handle it before the tab are dismiss)

-can assign custom button or button skin to show as the close button (currently it's using the one from Firefox's tab

-drag and drop the tab to re-order the tabs

-drag and drop can be disabled

-all the closing and drag/drop operation can be handled by the
component itself so user don't have to worry about manually handling
any event. (good for quick prototyping or rapid application development)

-there's also a TabNavigator version (since TabNavigator is basically TabBar plus ViewStack, it's just a replacement routine)

if you thought there should be other components like this being built, just let me know, I'm taking open request now.

You might want to check out Flex Data Services too, we have paging built
right into the system :-)

However it's worth noting that the charts do not support paged data
(where
it comes down incrementally), in order to draw successfully a chart
assumes
that all data is present.

I am newbie trying to use FLEX to build chart apps but I experience huge

(request through mx:HTTPService).

Firefox 1.5, Windows XP with adobe FES had failed totally and the
memory/IO

Later I try with pre-compiled flash with tomcat apache, the charts work
work
sluggishly.

I would like to know is there any binding mechanism that can stream the
XML
data over through HTTP? Something like active stream format for
movie/sound.

Is FLEX chart support JXPATH/XSLT? I w! ould like to build a Flex chart
that allows user to enter XPATH/XSLT and produce the chart dynamically.

Thanks for your patience in the reading. Meanwhile I am finding the
answer
myself reading the help documents provided.

Hi all,

I've an accordion, which has 3 canvas as children
and I have some problems with the toolTip property. If I bind a var to it
(mx:Canvas toolTip={toolTipTextVar} ... /) , it doesn't
display the tooltip in the accordion header, it does it in the body of the canvas when the mouse enters,
but if I write the text of the tooltip (mx:Canvas toolTip=Some
tooltip text... /) it's displayed correctly.

The other problem that I have is with combo boxes,
and it's prompt property. If I bind the dataProvider (mx:ComboBox
dataProvider={myDataProvider} .../), it seems that both
selectedIndex=-1 and prompt=Some prompt text are
ignored, but if I write the dataProvider manually these properties work ok.

As I said in the topic, I'm doing it wrong or are
these bugs?

Thanks,

Oriol.

but I'm not sure you really want Adobe re-bundling the Java IDE in its
own installer. I suppose we could make the installer more clear to say
when you're selecting what to install that you should do the plugin if
you want to develop Java also. But I think it's probably not a great
idea for us to include the JDT itself.

I couldn't agree more... And if they have a lot to do right now (I

instructions on how to achieve this with Flexbuiler, without having to
run arround the whole Web trying to find out how one could implement
something essential for most Flex developers and/or uninstalling
Flexbuilder to install Eclipse.

RE: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: Documenting :: Effects

2006-04-02 Thread Matt Chotin

Effects have metadata just like the styles
and events.

E.g.,

/**

* Component is moved.

*/

[Effect(name=moveEffect,
event=move)]

Name is the name, event is the event that triggers
this effect.

Hi,

I'm writting an as3/mxml documenter;

Would anybody from Adobe care to tell me how you
document your effects in you source code? I need to know so I can parse them.
IE Styles, Events are obvious becasue they have meta data tags with comments. I
have already got this working.

I just need to know if you actually put a
declaration in your code or is it some database thing? Or is it a tag in a doc
comment above a method, or tied to an event description?

This would help me greatly!

Peace, Mike

I'm seeing some odd behavior when using the selectedNode property of
the tree to return to a node in a tree or it's quite possible that
I'm not using it correctly.

The first issue is that if there are identical nodes in different
branchs of the tree visible setting selectedNode will just go the
first node. Run the example code below, but first open the 'dir1'
branch before clicking the button to see this behavior, it works as
expected if the 'dir1' branch is closed.

The second thing is that when selectedNode is set and another
element of the tree is selected the selectedNode remains highlighted
until you mouse over it.

Well the 80{context.root} in your flex-enterprise-services.xml file
looks wrong to me, is that a typo?

You can refer to items in a ViewStack by id as long as they have been
created. Or you could tell the ViewStack to change its selectedIndex
for example when you click on a Tree node.

I'm not sure what you mean by load methods from the Tree and MenuBar.

Hello...

Ok, let's try this again as my original post never made it.

I'm trying to bring up the Flex 1.5 flexstore remotely from a Red
Hat Linux box using Mozilla to my Windows2000 Professional machine
using Hummingbird. I installed the plugin on Linux (FlashPlayer
7.0r61) with no problems. When I bring up the flexstore, only part
of the application displays -- the left side sort of displays, but
then there's an overlay of a big grey panel -- as if the application
is BEHIND it.

I have no problems if I use Mozilla or Netscape 7 which are
installed on my Windows box.

any ideas? hopefully this was fixed for Flex 2? I'm evaluating
different RIA technologies and this would totally kill my case for
it.

thanks!

Posting again in the hope of getting a response.
See below for bit more detail.

1. Anyone seen problem with FormItem truncating the bottom edge of
its children?
2. What is the most effective way to achieve multi column field
layout in mx.containers.Form?

Thanks in advance.
Anand

 I need a grid layout of FieldItems while leveraging the form
 handling logic (default button, tab management, anything else?)

 I tried the following:

 MyForm extends Form
 function updateDisplayList() {
   // Layout MyFormItems @ 2 per row
   // Set the width to half the available space

 }

 MyFormItem extends FormItem
 function createChildren() {
   addChild() // for each UIComponent like textbox, combobox etc.
 }

 Questions:
 1. The FormItem height is not proper - seems to chop off the
bottom
 edge of the child control(s) by approx the top margin amount

 2. Is there an alternative to custom layout code in MyForm? Can
the
 Grid layout be used in combination with Form?
 By default, Form seems to iterate its direct descendants for
 children of type FormItem or FormHeading and deal with them.

 Thanks
 Anand

Create a new skin extending mx.skins.halo.SliderThumbSkin. In the

RE: [flexcoders] Flex2B2 - XML.contains()

2006-04-02 Thread Matt Chotin
Yes, contains is by reference, so it doesn't recognize your inline
definition as being the same as what's in the XML object.

So this would work:

var test:XML = xml1.Report[0];
if (xml1.contains(test))
{
  trace('found');
}

Just trying out this method. the first 2 if tests are failing (not
getting traces). is that correct?

var xml1:XML =  Root
 Report /
 Detail /
/Root;

if(xml1.contains(Report /))
{
 trace(report found);
}
if(xml1.contains(Detail /))
{
 trace(detail found);
}
if(!xml1.contains(Me /))
{
 trace(Me not found);
}

RE: [flexcoders] A suggestion for the group (Tutorials and Tip's)

2006-04-02 Thread Matt Chotin

The exact details are still TBD.
Originally I wanted it to be a Wiki but I think I there is enough stuff we want
enforced like page layout and a rating system that well
probably make it a CF web app.  But the goal is for it to be community-driven
which means an easy submission mechanism for new entries and a commenting system
at a minimum for existing entries, even better if we can allow public editing
of those existing.

As we get this thing on its feet we will definitely
be asking you guys for help in adding entries and perhaps looking for volunteer
moderators.

Matt,

I think you know that the more places there are
good information, the better our jobs are and the more we get paid ;-) I think
we could say that it can enable the the Flex community. It's interesting, Flex
is so much differnet then the Flash community becasue of the application

I currently own most sample content for the Flex 2

You know I'm seeing allot of new users having
problems with getting
their head around Flex. I understand the problems

it. Most of them see due to a lack of examples and
are quite
elementary. Searching this group is dead slow. I
have seen some very
excited people come through with real world
questions and I want to
help where I can.

Could we not set this up so that we can add tipes

to the group? I create umpteen test/trial and
error stuff while I
learn and I'm, certainly willing to share. Web
services in
conjunction with flex, XML, design issues,
populating components
using various techniques etc..

Could we not post this stuff? Say a tip has
[TIP:Flex 2.0] in the
subject and a tutorial [TUTORIAL:Flex 2.0]
something like that?

I'm aware of IFBin, but not willing to contribute
to a pay for
service that benefits only few... No offence to
the IFBin guy's.

Their just seems to be no really easy way to share
unless you blog

Or maybe that would pollute to much, I can see
some stuff even being
handy to more experience users.

Just a thought.

[flexcoders] How to create mxml component insdie a package .

2006-04-02 Thread parinda_b_patel
I have an mxml file which I want to put under package xx.yy . Is there
a way to do this. Physically the file is located inside folder yy
which is insdie folder xx. I have a function which I want to make
public so I wrote like this :

public function xyz{

}

When I compile this file using flex builder 2 plugin for Eclipse it
gives me error 'public' attribute may only be used inside a package.
So I am assuming that somehow compiler is not able to understand the
packaging or I guess I am making some mistake.

 please help

Re: [flexcoders] Beyond Confused (Please Help)- Flex 2 Beta 2 - HTTPService XML

2006-04-02 Thread Frederic Bodin

Hello,To read you xml string you must use the XML class (check the help it's quite clear). It's far much more simple than on AS2 so enjoy it ;)RegardsFredOn 3/31/06,
David Terry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hello everyone,

First off, thank you for reading
this post and helpingme understand
this issue. I am new to
ActionScript coding but I've taken avery
serious interest in RIA development
using Flex.

Okay on to my issue. I truly don't understand how Flex reads
XML out of an HTTPService. At times
when trying to bind the data I only see [object Object]. Other times I see what I need to
display. So… For us newbie's how about we hack this
out.

I'm using SQLXML IIS with XML
Templates to return mySQL
datausing the FOR XML option in the select statement. SQLXML IIS allows me to access my SQL
Server via HTTP using various methods – I decided to use XML Templates for
security issues.

XML Template
Example
--
?xml version=1.0
encoding=UTF-8?
ROOT
xmlns:sql=urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql

sql:query
SELECT Employee.FirstName as
FirstName, Employee.FirstName as label, Employee.LastName as LastName,
SalesTerritory.Name as Territory,
SalesPerson.TerritoryID as
TerritoryID, SalesPerson.SalesPersonID as SalesPersionID

FROM SalesPerson INNER JOIN
Employee ON
SalesPerson.SalesPersonID = Employee.EmployeeID INNER JOIN

SalesTerritory ON SalesPerson.TerritoryID =
SalesTerritory.TerritoryID

ORDER BY SalesTerritory.Name

FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS

/sql:query
/ROOT

I assume we all know TSQL but here
is a little refresher on the FOR XML method. FOR XML returns XML from SQL Server in
various formats.

FOR XML RAW - Returns
--
 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8
?
- ROOT
xmlns:sql=urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql
 row FirstName=Lynn label=Lynn LastName=Tsoflias
Territory=Australia TerritoryID=9
SalesPersionID=36 /
 row FirstName=José label=José
LastName=Saraiva Territory=Canada TerritoryID=6
SalesPersionID=31 /
 /ROOT

FOR XML AUTO – Returns
--
 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8
?
- ROOT
xmlns:sql=urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql
- Employee
FirstName=Lynn
label=Lynn LastName=Tsoflias
- SalesTerritory Territory=Australia label=Australia
 SalesPerson TerritoryID=9
label=9 SalesPersionID=36 /

/SalesTerritory
 /Employee
 /ROOT

FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS –
Returns
--
 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8
?
- ROOT
xmlns:sql=urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-sql
-
Employee
 FirstNameLynn/FirstName

 labelLynn/label

LastNameTsoflias/LastName
-
SalesTerritory
 TerritoryAustralia/Territory

 labelAustralia/label

-
SalesPerson
 TerritoryID9/TerritoryID

 label9/label

SalesPersionID36/SalesPersionID

/SalesPerson

/SalesTerritory
 /Employee
 /ROOT

Okay with that said here is what I
am trying to do.

I want todatabind a control (DataGrid and Tree in these
examples)with the results.
Here is my Flex code.

mx:HTTPService
 id=rawXML
resultFormat=object

url="" href="http://localhost/advwrk/templates/raw.xml" target="_blank" >http://localhost/advwrk/templates/raw.xml
 useProxy=false
showBusyCursor=true /

mx:DataGrid
dataProvider={rawXML.result}
 mx:columns

mx:DataGridColumn headerText=First Name
dataField=FirstName/

mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Last Name
dataField=LastName/

mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Territory
dataField=Territory/

/mx:columns
/mx:DataGrid

Now… This fails (I don't see any
results), but if I place the results in a
Text…

mx:Text
text={rawXML.result}/
I get [object
Object]

If I change the code to
mx:Text text={rawXML.result.ROOT}/
It still displays [object
Object].

But, changing it to mx:Text
text={rawXML.result.ROOT.root}/ returns many [object Object]
values.

Using a dataProvider of
dataProvider={rawXML.result.ROOT.root} in the DataGrid returns the results I
expect, but lets say I was using the FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS data with the
dataProvider of dataProvider={rawXML.result.ROOT.Employee} I also get data,
BUT I can't get the Territory data.
It seems I only have access to the Employee node of the tree and not
children nodes.

Hold on to that
though…

Lets try using a Tree control with
the dataProvider set to dataProvider={rawXML.result.ROOT.Employee} using the
FOR XML AUTO, ELEMENTS data.

mx:Tree
dataProvider={rawXML.result.ROOT.Employee} /

Now based on the examples I've seen I should have seen a Tree that looks
kind of like…

Employee

Territory

ID

BUT… It seems I have the same problem as the
DataGrid and can only see the Employee level of the XML.

I have no idea what I am doing
wrong.

My Questions
-
How does Flex handle
XML?
Why doesn't Flex understand the
XML?
Am I doing something
wrong?
Do I need to convert the data into
something?
Am I missing a
step?

ANY help would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Many thanks,

After the selected page is deleted a new page should become active, and also be
shown as active in the tree.

But I don't seem to be able to find how to do

Re: [flexcoders] [OT] Developing/Compiling Java in Flexbuilder 2

Hi Matt,Maybe could be a good idea to create another bundle with the JDT (standalone, plugin and standalone with Java). In my experience is really anoying to try to code Java and not be able to do it with the standalone installation. So all people trying to do that must to uninstall FlexBuilder and download Eclipse and the Flexbuilder plugin, and then configure their enviroment and last (but not least) their current projects.
I think Flex RIAs is all about the mix of AS3/MXML/Java, so I can't understand a Flex IDE without the possibility to code the serverside part of the story. So for my JDT is necesary.But, it's only my opinion :)

Hi Matt,

Maybe could be a good idea to create another
bundle with the JDT (standalone, plugin and standalone with Java).

In my experience is really anoying to try to code

[flexcoders] Any .NET Complete Projects out there with .NET SOAP WSDL integration

2006-04-02 Thread Robert Thompson
I know Alistair McLeod has a great 1.5 example of Flex integrating with Hotmail
InBox and and Send
Mail Web Service.

However, I'm looking for a demonstration or tutorial on a full project in
ASP.NET 2.0 that
demonstrates both a FLEX 2.0 app. using SOAP to integrate with a Web Service.

REST/HttpService is easy, I simply return XML via an .aspx ASP.Net page.

And although some may say, well if you can create a .NET Web Service just do
like the examples
like Flickr etc. Easier said than done, even in Beta 2 mode.

I'm just wondering, does anyone especially from Macromedia have such an example
something like the
Flickr client example, but also some sort of SOAP (i.e. full compliance even
though it's slower I
know in SOAP, but I want to support WSDL on UDDI servers) example in .NET that
is proven to work
with FLEX 2.0 Builder client.

I really don't even like Mickeysoft, but I know .NET very well and it's 2nd
only to flash in terms
of my skillset and I use it to get things done for some clients, while for my
own uses I'll be
using the developer edition of the Flex Data Services.

Any help, suggestions, example urls, Macromedia/Adobe personnel referring to
examples of full
projects would help. For example, perhaps showing both client and server
examples more instead of
just client; though I know there are good Cold Fusion Adaptor uses, I don't
really like Cold
Fusion; I checked it out years ago; just overkill I think. I'm just looking
for J2EE and .NET
Server examples as part of one project with the FLEX 2.0 code that *** WORK ***.

[flexcoders] FB2 :: Highlighting changes :: Keywords

2006-04-02 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hey Matt,

Since you seem to be online...

I know I asked this before but, it never got answered by someone from adobe.

Is it a bug that keywords like override, String and Number are not being highlighted in the code view anymore?

In my humble opinion, if this is not a bug I think it is not good. I am
so used to seeing all keywords higlighted, it messes up my visual
space. I use it to memorize things. Especailly since there are somany
packages and class names now. I know override is easy but, it's like
the 'whole' thing to see all reserved words highlighted.

Just wondering...

Peace, Mike-- What goes up, does come down.

Re: [flexcoders] Code formatter for action script

2006-04-02 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hi,

This is just my opinion;

I have a project I am working on that has over 50 classes/interfaces and counting, I have written this all myself. My advice;

When you create classes/interfaces, methods and properties, format them manually and don't rely on code formatters.

Hey, some will laugh at me for saying this but, it produces better
code. Mark my words it does. You tend to find mistakes quicker and
after you have exercised you formatting routine enough you find
yourself formatting as your write.

You will also find yourself taking much more pride in the way your code
looks and know exactly how it got that way, becasue you did it.

It's also a good way to get in the habit of writting really good
documenting comments. I don't mean inline but, api doc comments.

Just the 2 cent here.

Peace, MikeOn 4/2/06, bkeinan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Re: [flexcoders] [OT] Developing/Compiling Java in Flexbuilder 2

seems the big emphasis now though is CF on the server side, eh? So why not bundle with CFEclipse? Hey, add in JSEcplise too. Heck, another bundle with the WST project and the future AJAX plugin too. Sounds like a nasty can of works to me. Keeping it simple as a plugin sounds good to me, that way I can use whatever. Further, if folks are using Java before getting Flex, they probably have eclipse up and running already. Maybe they have one of those other Java IDEs, but then that is moot.

Highlighting changes :: Keywords

Hey Matt,

Since you seem to be online...

I know I asked this before but, it never got
answered by someone from adobe.

Is it a bug that keywords like override, String
and Number are not being highlighted in the code view anymore?

In my humble opinion, if this is not a bug I think
it is not good. I am so used to seeing all keywords higlighted, it messes up my
visual space. I use it to memorize things. Especailly since there are somany
packages and class names now. I know override is easy but, it's like the
'whole' thing to see all reserved words highlighted.

Just wondering...

Peace, Mike

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Security sandbox violation using PHP, APACHE MYSQL

2006-04-02 Thread Matt Chotin
I guess I misunderstood, are you using HTTPService to hit your PHP? And
the PHP is on localhost? Are you accessing the SWF using a web browser
from localhost as well?

 otherI've configured my project to run on localhost, my php
script runs no probs on localhost, i've gone down the proxy route
but still the same error. I've looked through Apache PHP config
nothing obvious here. I'm certain I'm making a schoolboy error
somewhere...
Really appreciate your help
Ben

Re: [flexcoders] Closable and Draggable Tab component for Flex 2

2006-04-02 Thread jeremy lu

I can't really share the source/swc due to the contract agreement with my employer.but I can share some of the experiences learned during the making of those components, if any one have question regarding building custom component (using Flex 2 only), I might be of some help.
as to english articles, yes, I will start a new blog in English next month writing about Flex 2.On 4/3/06, Stefan Richter

very nice, are you sharing your efforts?

I'd be great if your blog would feature more articles in
english, it looks interesting.

  Draggable Tab component for Flex 2
  made this during the weekend :-)*blog entry:
http://ria.richtechmedia.com/?p=356*demo video:http://tinyurl.com/zmpsn
*features

  -100% based on flex 2 mx:TabBar and mx:TabNavigator component, just added
  in needed APIs, so usage is pretty much the same as those two.
  -show/hide close button
  -close tab when close button clicked (broadcasting closeButton event so
  user can handle it before the tab are dismiss)
  -can assign custom button or button skin to show as the close button
  (currently it's using the one from Firefox's tab
  -drag and drop the tab to re-order the tabs
  -drag and drop can be disabled
  -all the closing and drag/drop operation can be handled by the component
  itself so user don't have to worry about manually handling any event. (good
  for quick prototyping or rapid application development)
  -there's also a TabNavigator version (since TabNavigator is basically
  TabBar plus ViewStack, it's just a replacement routine)if you
  thought there should be other components like this being built, just let me
  know, I'm taking open request now.jeremy.
