Re: [Flexradio] 58 Degrees and rising ....

2011-09-06 Thread Mike

Hi Dudley,

Thanks for the reply.
Interesting you say the default for the fans is 70c, all the versions of
PSDR I have used have had it set to 40c by default.

If I start the temperature widget immediately upon starting PSDR the
initial temp is normally around 22-26c, if I leave the radio on RX only
the temp rises to around 30c very quickly and then hovers there until I
start TXing, then it gets hot and the fans kick in.

I'll keep an eye on things for future WSPR sessions.

Hello Dudley,

The default setting for the Flex3000 is 40c. When you install new software

Flex makes a great CW radio. Flex has had its challenges with CW, but has

I don't know what to tell you, but it works for me.

I set the parameter in the Setup as I indicated.

Created a VAR1 filter by dragging the panadapter filter shirts to
something other than the default

Cycled through the 20m bandstack settings to make sure it stuck
Shut down PowerSDR
Powered up PowerSDR and my VAR1 filter was the same as when I shut down.

[Flexradio] GUI question

2011-09-06 Thread w8zn
I'm new to the list so this may have been answered some time ago. Does anyone
know if there is a way to have 6m displayed on the VHF band table instead of
the HF table? When operating a VHF contest it's very inconvenient to have to
click twice to get to 6m then back to other VHF bands.

Thanks,

Les,

That feature is not available with the FLEX-1500 (or the SDR-1000), so adding
it to an already crowded GUI may not be the best idea.

However, a feature request I would like to see is for PowerSDR to remember that
you are displaying the voltage/temperature window automatically display it,
in the same position, the next time you start PowerSDR. This should be a very
easy change to implement. (Tim, oh grand guru of the feature request database,

Re: [Flexradio] Flex makes a great CW radio

2011-09-06 Thread Tim Ellison, W4TME

Now this is a different issue. Thanks for describing it in detail.

CW filters, like DIGx filters are dependent on center frequency. For
CW it is the Pitch Frequency (or the click tune offset for DIGx). The
filter's low and high cut values will always auto correct so that the
the filter's center frequency is the CW pitch frequency (or the DIGx
click tune value) no mater what you set the high and low cut skirts.

So in the filter definition form, if you set the low and/or high cut
settings to say 1000 and 400 respectively, you are defining a 600 Hz
filter 1000-400=600). But if your CW Pitch frequency is 600 Hz, this
newly defined 600 Hz filter will not have a center frequency of 600 Hz
(the pitch frequency), so PowerSDR auto corrects the high and low cut
values so that this newly created 600 Hz filters will center itself on
the CW pitch frequency and the new high/low cut values are 900 and 300 Hz.

This is the behavior you are observing.

It does not behave like this for phone modes.

I don't know what to tell you, but it works for me.

I set the parameter in the Setup as I indicated.

Created a VAR1 filter by dragging the panadapter filter
shirts to something other than the default
Cycled through the 20m bandstack settings to make sure it stuck
Shut down PowerSDR
Powered up PowerSDR and my VAR1 filter was the same as when I
shut down.

They most certainly do stick. You just have to
configure PowerSDR to
make them persistent.

Open up Setup. Navigate to the General-Filters tab.
Check the box

besides Save Slider/Display changes

2011-09-06 Thread w8zn
hu, I though these were Software defined radios. Who writes the software?
Maybe I'm missing the point but this seems to be a very basic human engineering
question. One logically groups like functions together, like all of the mode
buttons are together. I understand that 6m is native to the rig but the
transverter settings are different, the end user should be able to put these
controls where they want them. What about a Flex 5000 with the dual band
transverter installed? Would these bands show up on the VHF sub menu? It just
makes no sense to me that this isn't an option.

Terry,

You can use your VHF contesting software to control the switching. I'm using
N1MM (could use Writelog or others) through VAC to communicate via CAT on
the Flex. When you switch bands, the Flex will follow with no clicking
involved. I'm setup to switch from 6m to 10G with direct entry from the
keyboard. CU this weekend.

so, if I want a 2 khz wide CWU filter for tuning dead bands for weak signals,

ok. except now i am 'married' to a pitch a bit too high for personal

Now this is a different issue.  Thanks for
  describing it in detail.

CW filters, like DIGx filters are dependent on center frequency.
For CW it is the Pitch Frequency (or the click tune offset for
DIGx).  The filter's low and high cut values will always auto
correct so that the the filter's center frequency is the CW pitch
frequency (or the DIGx click tune value) no mater what you set the
  high and low cut skirts.

So in the filter definition form, if you set the low and/or high
cut settings to say 1000 and 400 respectively, you are defining a
600 Hz filter 1000-400=600).  But if your CW Pitch frequency is
600 Hz, this newly defined 600 Hz filter will not have a center
frequency of 600 Hz (the pitch frequency), so PowerSDR auto
corrects the high and low cut values so that this newly created
600 Hz filters will center itself on the CW pitch frequency and
the new high/low cut values are 900 and 300 Hz.

This is the behavior you are observing.

It does not behave like this for phone modes.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR Skins Tutorial Update, New Slider Packs, Three New Skins Available...

2011-09-06 Thread W1AEX - Rob
A few new things are available for those who are interested in custom
skins for PowerSDR:

A PDF version of the skins tutorial is now available in the files
section of the Flex user group at Yahoo. It's available in the
Files\Utilities folder:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FlexRadio/files/Utilities/

Three new slider packs with the narrow track are available at the Skins
Tutorial site. (You can install any slider pack by simply unzipping the
file into any installed skin.)

Three new skins are also available in the download section. (Heavy
Metal, Dark Metal, and Dentron)

For those who know how to install the custom skin packs, simply browse
the available button packs and slider packs to see if there's anything
that interests you, and then head to the bottom of the page where the
downloads are. Each skin pack contains a custom console, custom buttons
and custom sliders in one zip file. For those who are not sure how to
install custom skins there are instructions for correct placement of the
folders and their files. For those adventurous folks who want to be
creative, there are templates so that you can build your own skins from
scratch. Hopefully, someone with more artistic skills than me will get
carried away and make some nice stuff for all of us!

The site hit 1700 hits at noon today, so grab a few skins before my
bandwidth limit is exceeded! The link at the bottom will take you to the
PSDR Skins Tutorial/Download page.

Hi Tony,

I've said the same many times before (and been flamed for it!!), it's
close but still has a way to go.

I really miss the QSK on my old Tentec Omni VI rig :-(

The RX on the F3K is great though!

Is there any way to change/alter the hardware to make it QSK capable???
Change the switching relays so that it uses the same type of relays as
used in the Omni maybe??

Or are there other issues too??

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000A TX1, TX2, TX3

2011-09-06 Thread Tim Ellison, W4TME

That isn't how the TX relays operate. it isn't a sequencer.

When you press (assert) PTT, the TX relays close immediately.

If there is a time delay value set, then RF is not transmitted until the
delay time period expires.

Example:

TX Relay-1 is connected to an AMP and it has a TX time delay of 100 ms.
ANT-1 is connected to the amp
I press PTT
The amps keys immediately
No RF is allowed to egress the ANT-1 until 100 ms pass after pressing PTT.

I hope that clarifies how it works, but I suspect that is not how you
had intended it to operate.

is transmitting even as low as s5 on 14.135 that they disturb the whole
noise floor on the panadapter as well as I can hear them on 150 just like
they were on 154 with a s9 or better. I went back a version and this problem
does not exist there.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000A TX1, TX2, TX3

2011-09-06 Thread Clay W7CE
TX1/TX2/TX3 do work as a sequencer (see Eric Wachsmann's 5/31/2011 reply
to the FlexEdge reflector titled TX1 -2-3 info?).

Tim's example is correct for a single TX line connected to an amp.
However, TX1/TX2/TX3 are sequenced when using multiple TX lines with
delays. In other words, TX1, TX2 and TX3 do not all turn on (connect to
ground) simultaneously. Here's how the sequencing works when TX1, TX2
and TX3 are all selected for a given band:

Push PTT
1. Flex 5000A switches to transmit, but no RF out
2. TX1 On (no delay)
3. Wait TX1 Delay
4. TX2 On
5. Wait TX2 Delay
6. TX3 On
7. Wait TX3 Delay
8. Flex 5000A RF Out Starts

Release PTT
1. Flex 5000A RF Out Stops
2. Wait TX3 Delay
3. TX3 Off
4. Wait TX2 Delay
5. TX2 Off
6. Wait TX1 Delay
7. TX1 Off
8. Flex 5000A switches to RX

**TXn On indicates that TX port n is connected to ground causing the
relay to close; TXn Off indicates that TX port n is open (not connected
to ground) causing that relay to open.

This is exactly how you want a sequencer to behave. This also works if
only pairs TX1/TX2, TX1/TX3 or TX2/TX3 are selected. Just skip the
appropriate steps above involving the unused TX port and its delay.

That isn't how the TX relays operate. it isn't a sequencer.

When you press (assert) PTT, the TX relays close immediately.

If there is a time delay value set, then RF is not transmitted until
the delay time period expires.

Example:

TX Relay-1 is connected to an AMP and it has a TX time delay of 100 ms.
ANT-1 is connected to the amp
I press PTT
The amps keys immediately
No RF is allowed to egress the ANT-1 until 100 ms pass after pressing
PTT.

I hope that clarifies how it works, but I suspect that is not how you
had intended it to operate.

Looking for some further explanation of TX1, TX2, TX3. The manual could
still use a little help or a good example.

I want to use TX1 and TX2 as a sequencer. I want TX1 to control
transmit/receive relays, TX2 to control 8877 amp.

I think:

TX1 delay 250

TX2 delay 150

Will cause:

TX1 to switch 250ms before the Flex actually transmits

TX2 to switch 150ms before the Flex actually transmits

Resulting in:

T/R relay to switch, followed by amp to key 100mS later, followed by
Flex to

transmit another 150mS later.

Is this correct (or backwards)?

[Flexradio] Flex 1500 Quits on treansmitt

2011-09-06 Thread Stan Burks
I have been using and enjoying my Flex 1500 for almost a year now. Tonight I
tuned in on P49T on 40 CW. When I started to call him the rig just quit. After
a couple of minutes of troubleshooting I found the fuse was blown. I replaced
it and tried again, a second fuse has blown. I have checked everything there is
to check and can find no shorts or antenna problems. Any ideas?
