[Flexradio] Upgrades and bug fixes to test

2009-03-18 Thread Duffy

Bob
Thanks for the new code. My HF noise aboard a boat is atrocious on
some bands. The sonars harmonic pulses are gross on 75M and the NB will
take it out but high level SSB nearby distorted the audio I would be
listening to greatly before. Tried your new test code last night and the
distortion looks to be gone or very little at first glance and the sonar
pules gone with NB on, wonderful. The ANF seems better and slowly ramps
in notch if tone is low level. NR has not really worked for me for a
long time and now seems to work, although I need to play with controls
to be able to copy weaker signals with NR on.

There seems to be a problem if I turn on both NR and ANF at the same
time. The Panadaptor goes flatline midscreen and the audio goes very
choppy at about a second interval. This is with 2 nd rec off but this
also occurs on 2nd receiver if I engage both there also. Tests are with
default NR and ANF settings .If I reduce taps on NR down to 40 or below
pan video mostly works ( some freezes) and audio slightly choppy.

This may be a problem with too much load on my new PC . The cpu
shows 15% normally ,NR on boosts cpu to 28%, ANF on boosts cpu to 25%.
Turning both on cpu still reads 29%( probably bogus )but there
is overload on system by evident audio- video failures and if I watch
windows task manager the first graph of the 4 cores zooms up to 100%
usage. Running test branch N4HY pwrsdr audio at 96 Khz w 2048 buffer

I have not had much experience with this newly built PC yet, so can
not comment much on it's characteristics. It was running pwrsdr ver
1.16.2 well for a week and had no issues at either 96Khz or 192Khz that
I found. It also runs HPSDR mercury-ozy at 96Khz but does have the
192Khz mercury stutter others seem to also have( usb issue ??). I know
I do luv it so far and thank you for turning me on to it.I hope that it
isn't too under powered for this job, didn't think I needed a quad core
2.8Ghz for just the radios.

New PC = Atom 330 w/2Gig ram and WD 500 Gig HD , OS= WinXP pro upgraded
to SP3, Trendnet 3 port firewire card all in mini atx case w/250 Watt
supply.external usb dvd drive ( hope to mount a mercury/ozy 2 plug mini
atlas in dvd case space )
Flex 5000A w 2nd receiver and ATU

Again thanks for all your great work and ideas.. Duffy NA6MM/4

[Flexradio] Flex 5000 hanging up

2008-01-28 Thread Duffy
Ok I thought I reported on this a long time back, but maybe I forgot.
This issue was attacked by Eric trying to fix it with firmware versions
0.1.1.7 and 0.1.1.8 and I think a few reported that it solved their hang
up's. I've had it all along and finally went back to firmware 0.1.1.0
after trying 0.1.1.8 and the hang up problem has not bothered me one
time since and that was over a month or two ago.. So you may want to go
way back to firmware 0.1.1.0 and see if it works for you, I got tired of
wacking that PTT button. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Dits and Dahs Second Receiver on track ???

2008-01-27 Thread Duffy
10. The FLEX-5000 second receiver is on track for a third quarter
release. We will have order and pricing information available in late
February.

John Could you clarify if your statement is correct. You say pricing on
the 2nd receiver will be in late Feb. but release is for 3rd quarter. We
thought that previously it was said that release was in 1st quarter and
the Current Flex web site production schedule shows end of March 08
release. Did you mean to say 3rd month release or has it slipped 6
months. Thanks ahead of reply and eagerly waiting for 2nd receiver.

[Flexradio] Dits and Dahs K6JCA Jeff now FlexRadio associate

2008-01-27 Thread Duffy
Wooo H This is GREAT news , Jeff comes up with some wonderful add
ons and modifications that always are ergonomically functional as well
as very useful. It is fantastic that he is now a part of the Team effort
at Flex and I certainly look forward to his future enhancements along
with melding all his current mods into the Pwrsdr code. Congratulations
Jeff Wooo H again Duffy NA6MM

5. We are pleased to announce that Jeff Anderson, K6JCA, is now an
associate' of FlexRadio Radio Systems. For those of you not familiar
with his work, Jeff has inspired numerous great ideas for the console
including the current widescreen look with adjustable zoom, and more
recently his panadapter/waterfall split display and easy record/playback
features. We value his efforts and ideas so highly that we have asked
him to play a greater role in the development of our console and to help
us identify and prioritize new features. Please thank him when you have
a chance for all that he has done already. Jeff's changes to the console
will be included in the next official release; however, Jeff's console
is currently available in the K6JCA branch of the SVN.

[Flexradio] New PowerSDR release???

2008-01-26 Thread Duffy
Well Tim thats how ya keep it a secret! Post it on the flex-radio forum.
There hasn't been a announcement posted there since version 1.8.0 back
in December of 2006. The poor suckers who ask for tech. help there
hardly ever get answers cause almost nobody goes there anymore including
Flex. But gee where does every body go to find out what's happening
including Flex, HERE. But then they post the announcement over there.
What a shame, no coordination. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] 5000C processor

2007-12-11 Thread Duffy
My curiosity is killing me , as there has been no reporting on the
5000C, and a number of them appear to be shipped. WHAT is the Core2Duo
processor speed that is being installed on the motherboards ?? There
still is no number that has been put onto the spec sheets as to which
model of the Core2Duo flex has decided to use. Would also like to know
from those who decided to get the C model like it etc. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Repaired 5000A fails again

2007-12-01 Thread Duffy
Well my 5000A came back from repair within a week, goody. It only worked
for a week the first time I had it, before the receiver quit and there
was a oscillating on the panadaptor screen.. Unpacked it Friday and the
paperwork showed that the A/D chip IC21 had been replaced. Paperwork
also noted firmware upgraded to v1.1.5 and recalibrated receive and
recalibrated xmit power output. Passed all production and other tests.
Hooked it up and started the pwrsdr 1.10.3 software. Radio comes up and
says it has newer saved calibrations and wants to replace older ones .I
agree and it loads. Radio runs and I'm happily cking out receiver on all
the bands. Happen to notice that there is a strong lsb image of a ssb
usb qso down 18 khz on 20 meters. Weird!! Found another then went to
75m and found a similar instance. Suspected that the image calibration
might be off so opened expert mode in setup and found that on 80 and 20
m image cal was -400 and -500 ,only on 80 and 20 meters. Strange in that
before I sent radio away I ran the I/Q balance test on just 80 and 20
and it failed. So Iguess it stuffed the bad test data into my pwrsdr
somewhere. But wait! What about the message that just came up and wanted
to replace the old cal data with the newest one ( done at the factory ).
Why didn't it replace it?? Dunno. So I ran the image test on 80 then 20
and it recalibrated itself and on I went. Did my normal QSO with locals
on 80m @ 80 watts , tuner worked fine audio ok etc. Listened around rest
of evening, everything fine. Shut down pwrsdr and pwred off the big blue
light for night. Next morn pwr on big blue light wait for clicks then
start pwrsdr. RECEIVER is DEAD and oscillating like last time. Ran
internal test for GEN/BAL and it fails. Same as last time ,but it only
worked for one evening this time. Am packing it up again so it can be
shipped back for another A/D chip I guess. Will have to wait for monday
to get shipping authorization. BUUMMER. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] 5000A Stopped working ,no receive or xmit now

2007-11-16 Thread Duffy
My 5000A stopped working last night after working the previous night.
Steve I also have been experiencing the receive lockup a few times
(ssb)and receiver seemed to return after I pushed the PTT again. This
started after I loaded firmware 0.1.1.4 Wed to fix the non operating
with my heil mic PTT from front panel . Last night I went to start the
radio and after a couple no starts and a reboot the pwrsdr prgrm would
run but the receiver is dead execept for some gross oscillation on the
panadaptor and a buzzing sound in audio. No sigs on any band including
local am broadcast. If I remove antenna, buzzing stops and oscillation
goes away and panadaptor grass level is at bottom of screen. XG2
generator produces no sig and a small amount of oscillating . No rf
power out on xmit. This suckka is dead.
I have also had to leave a message for support today as no one answers
this afternoon also. Are there that many 5000 's dying ?? Waiting for
service with a dead 5000A and no more ideas. Duffy NA6MM

Just reloaded 0.1.1.4 firmware and started pwrsdr 1.10.3 creating new
database and still have dead rec with oscillation on panadaptor when
antenna is connected. The radio clicks and responds with band changes
etc. There is noisy grass at bottom of screen with no antenna. Connect
antenna and it seems to break into a oscillation across any band that
shows about S7 in sig strength and no known local signals will show up
so nothing thru front end including my sig gen. Duffy

[Flexradio] Noisy ATU

2007-11-16 Thread Duffy
John ya kinda lost me on that one. How does an internal ATU help a
external linear to tune a match to the antenna.
On the other subject I have had a LDG 1KW tuner for a long time. For the
first couple yrs when it was told to tune it rattled and rattled many
times to try and tune. A couple yrs ago I read about their new firmware
chip to improve the tune time and add a bunch of freq tune match storage
capacity. I bought the chip and what a difference. It since tunes pretty
fast , it does only a quick rattle and if it's a previous used freq it
just goes click and it's there. Hope their routines for this tuner are
similar to the 1kw model I use it to tune my shorty dipoles on the boat
after my ameritron 600 watt solid state amp.

[Flexradio] SVN: 1424 performance

2007-08-12 Thread Duffy
Hey Bob I have a little bug with 1424 that doesn't happen every time I
switch back from 192 khz to 48 khz, but it has happened 4 times out of
about 10 tries so it is real. Setup here is Toshiba laptop w/ P4 2.8Ghz
w/hyperthreading,2 Gig ram. Janus/Ozy audio ,but using toshiba parallel
port to control SDR1000 (Bill says to cause I have 100W amp and routines
are not in Pwrsdr for that from Ozy yet). Have switched from 48 to
192khz reliably (love the lower cpu %, thanks) A few times when going
back to 48 khz from 192 something locks up for a second and I lose audio
out from janus permanetly. Display shows good sigs on panadapter still
but no audio. Tried quitting Pwrsdr and restarting. Still dead, now I'm
sweatin. Quit Powersdr and cycle power supply of Janus/Ozy. Then start
Powersdr and see Janus/Ozy batch file runs afterwhich the audio is back,
Whew. There appears to be some sort of intermittent glitch that waps
Janus/Ozy. Thanks for the reduced cpu use, love it. Duffy NA6MM / MM
OOPs Just tried this again on svn 1419 and it died also. Tried it a few
times before and it didn't glitch, but it just did . So must not be in
your code change. I'll post this anyway so others will know.

Bill try this.
Right click on your main SVN folder, probably powersdr and
Highlight your TortoiseSVN folder and select the show log option at the
top.
highlight the version you want and right click on it.
select the Revert to this revision.
it should ,I beleive, take your folders back to that rev.
To go back to current, do a SVN update.

I also have noticed that the Waters Stanton ads in Radcom, that they

[Flexradio] Scanning ranges / memories?

2006-10-27 Thread Duffy
I beleive the reason for not getting FCC Part 15 certification is
dollars $. It costs to submit for certification to part15 and thus
the decision that scanning is not a big HF radio feature worth the
expense. It also used to be years ago if you changed anything in the
certified equipement you had to resubmit to continue your certification,
don't know if thats still the same. That can lead to even more expense.
So I agree that we don't need it from Flex , we just need some one with
coding skills to add it back. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Transmit pwr goes to 100w bug

2006-10-02 Thread Duffy
I have just reported this on bug tracker but thought it important enough
to also list here. Discovered in svn693 that if you change your
transmit audio profile selection that the transmit power changes to 100
watts and the mic gain goes to 50. This occurs on choosing any of the
four profile selections . Did not go back to check any previous
versions. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Edirol FA-66 Firewire box -other notes

2006-09-21 Thread Duffy
There are a few other differences between the Edirol and the Presonus,
some might like to know about. The Presonus uses a software switch in
its program to select between 48 and 96Khz and the Edirol uses a
hardware only switch on it's back panel to set 48, 96 or 192 Khz. The
Presonus comes with a software mixer application you may use for add on
things and it also includes Cubase LE audio software, that has high end
mixing, recording, equalizer audio addons. The Edirol comes with no audio
software programs other than driver setups. The Presonus has 2 separate
output volume controls on front. One for main 1-2 output and one for
the headphone jack output. The Edirol has one volume out control which
controls both the main 1-2 output and the headphone out. Not a big deal
unless you are running the main out to powered speakers and also trying
to use the headphone out also. The Edirol 3-4 line input rear jacks are
RCA phono jacks ( Yuk just like my stereo amp). No detents like 1/4 inch
phone plugs to help hold them in. Just to let everyone know some of the
differences and I still think I may sell my Presonus and get a Edirol
after a few more user reports. You can download the Edirol FA-66 user
manual here.

[Flexradio] FW: OT spectrum analyzer book suggestions

2006-08-04 Thread Duffy
Allen Welcome to the group. Lucky you to aquire such a fine piece of
test gear. One of the best resources I used to collect , to help me with
learning test setups for spectrum analyzers was to get the free
application notes that tektronix and HP (now agilent technoligy division
) used to and probably still produces. There were lots of them from each
company that explained theory and real world testing setups for spec
an's. It could be possible that some of these may be available on the
web now, if you searched. A lot of these dated back into the 60's and
70's but had very valuable info in them. Some of them were listed as an
app note on a specific model number of a spectrum analyzer but the info
in them was generic and pertained to any brand. Good Luck Duffy NA6MM
PS Sorry I can't send you any as they are in CA and I'm floatin on a
boat in Norfolk ,VA right now.

[Flexradio] Memory controls missing

2006-08-04 Thread Duffy
Guy's I don't quite understand why you say the memory controls are
missing .They were moved to a drop down menu called memory, right
above the stby/on switch. Now I agree that they should have remained
where they were, so as to simply click on save instead of having to use
the drop down. Jeff's console I beleive just picked it up in flex's
later code. Note Now that the filter values are changed in their
respective boxes, the value that shows in the memory table being saved
doesn't read the same anymore as what you may have selected, but if you
don't change it, it will bring back whatever the true value of what was
in the box you saved. Hope that makes sense. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Intermitent No Rx after Tx

2006-08-04 Thread Duffy
I've been trying to tie this problem down for a little while now, but
just can't get the hard particulars consistant to point at any one rev
of software. It's intermitent , so it's hard to get repeatable results.
Here is what I can defintely say. Sometimes after xmiting or using tune
in bypass mode, when you unkey, the spectrum graph is at the bottom and
the receiver is dead. Now I have read that others have had this problem
also in the past. Mine seems to have started this recently, but am
not sure when it started but I keep a bunch of the older versions ,so I
have been trying to pinpoint it to a version. I beleive that I read a
note from N4HY that said it may be the DDS /osc going dead, and this
makes sense as to the indicators of dead Rx and no xmit pwr out ,but
audio shows xmit sound card activity. I have found a quirk to the
recovery though. If you go into standby and then click on again it will
recover, no matter what version of sftware. If i'm using Jeffs console
based on svn567 and after a mox or tune it goes dead if you click on mox
or tune again, it will not recover no matter how many times you do it.
You must click stanby/on to recover operation. However using the latest
svn 629 and when you do get it to go dead (quite often ), you can click
mox or tune and it will recover and come back on almost all ,if not,
every time. A friend who is using jeff's latest code also has noted that
his year old SDR1K is also doing the dead Rx thing. I have gone back to
svn563 and banged mox or tune so many times I thought I was going to
wear out my relays, and it wouldn,t fail so I thought I found a stable
version till yesterday it did fail just once after about 20 to 30
clicks. then not again. Today it did it again, just once, so the problem
was there too, although when 567 or 629 start doing it usually they
will fail every 5 to 10 clicks several times in a row at minimum. Anyway
I thought I would get it out there to see if there were any brilliant
ideas as i'm wearing my mouse finger out. Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Bug or feature??

2006-08-04 Thread Duffy
Here is a item I don't know what to think of. My SDR friend pointed it
out to me, so I didn't discover it. When you click on some of the
console functions with a mouse, you can then hit the spacebar on your
keyboard and it will repeat the mouse click. So click on a band and then
the space bar will ratchet the memory stack in that band, click on noise
blanker and you then turn it on and off with spacebar, at least till you
use the mouse somewhere else. Feature HUH! Well what I don't like is if
you click on mox or tune then you can hit the spacebar and the radio
transmits. I don't like that personally. Your opinions Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] Bug or feature??

2006-08-04 Thread Duffy
Philip What I don't like is the variability of it. The spacebar isn't
defined as a PTT key, It's what ever you last hit with the mouse. So if
you're in QSO and add your noise blanker or filter change or whatever
you must remember to go back and hit mox just before you want to xmit
again. I see this as a potential problem with some digi-modes as you
type space's alot, except if you're in another program you are not
controlling the sdr program at that instant. By the way, in Jeff's newer
console he defined the ~ (tilde) key to be a extra PTT key and on my
toshiba laptop that key is next to spacebar and is defined permantely,
hoohray. Duffy NA6MM

Chris Since I don't know what you know about flex-radio resources

flex-radio.com website has some good hints and tutorials on setting up
the radio including whats needed for different modes. If you didn't know
you can dwnload the radio software (free) and it will run in demo mode
on your PC. If you also dwnload some special IF wav files that the
radio can create , you can play them back in a loop mode in the radio
sftware and see and listen how the radio and filters really work.I did
this for a month or so while waiting for the radio and it's fun and
shows you how to operate the radio. It's almost the same as receiving on
the real hardware. The flex-radio website forum and the yahoo sdr site
has little new input now that the reflector is being used by most
members and staff and the reflector is the place to go to read up on
current stuff and about guy's troubles also. There is a modified console
created by k6jca that has some great features and you add it into a copy

[Flexradio] Warning Pwr bug in latest K6JCA console

2006-07-24 Thread Duffy
In Jeff's latest release (july 8, 06) I just discovered a major bug. No
matter what value you have written into the Setup / transmit /tune pwr
window , it gets overwritten by the transmit pwr shown on the console
face when you apply the tune function on the second or third tune
application. If you have tune pwr set to 20 W and your operating power
is set to 90 W then hit Tune once or twice, the tune pwr setting, in
Setup, is now changed to 90 W. PPPsss. Jeff's last version ( june
26) and stock sv563 and sv605 do not do this.. I have just sent Jeff an
E-mail of the problem , but felt all should know of this. I continue to
use this console as I luv it's features, but beware of the tune function
power settings can change . Duffy NA6MM

[Flexradio] More info on Power bug

2006-07-24 Thread Duffy
Apparently I didn't do a proper trouble shooting method (ie test all
permutations). All of the previously stated conditions exists if the
tuner is in bypass mode. If the tuner is in Memory or Full mode then the
tune pwr outputs 15Watts when tune is active and it doesn't matter what
is set in the setup file, it will only output 15 Watts in mem or full
tune mode for tuning ,no matter what the setup file reads.. The setup
file will change to whatever is on the xmit pwr out setting as I stated
before and it will use it in the bypass mode. *NOTE: I only found this
to be on the new K6JCA console dated 08 july 06 based on svn567 as I
stated before. *Duffy NA6MM

Re: [Flexradio] More info on Power bug

2006-07-24 Thread Duffy
Eric I don't quite understand you're note as to what exactly you intend
it to do, but I just tested further of stock svn563 and svn605. They
operate as I would think in bypass mode. ie they use the Setup value to
tune at. When in Memory or Full tune modes the output power switches to
15 Watts when tuning regardless of what is in the Setup value window
(which may be what you want it to do). But also what happens is that the
15 W value is now written into the Setup value replacing what may have
been there before. That last part seems strange as I will have to go
back and change it again ,from 15 if I want something different for
Bypass mode. Here also is where I think Jeff's latest code may be
getting crossed with the stock code and his latest grabs the value from
the front xmit pwr value and writes it into the Setup value area in
bypass mode, whatever number it may be. Duffy

Eric now I understand what you ment when you said

We have
fixed it so that using TUN in Memory or Full Tune mode (with the ATU) no
longer updates the TUN power to 15. When in Bypass mode, it should work
just like it does without the ATU.

What you should have said was we have just fixed it . I was using the
latest svn605 from last friday. I just went and updated my Tortoise and
see that a couple hours ago you posted svn607 which notes that it fix's
the 15 value problem. I haven't tested it yet, but thanks, had me
confused for a bit. I know Jeff is going to look tonight at his code to
see where it's getting into this area and writing the front panel value

[Flexradio] Short takes

2006-07-10 Thread Duffy
High Stability Mod now available. Radios shipped after April 1, 2006
have a thermistor soldered to the oscillator, which greatly improves
oscillator stability. This modification is available from our service
department for $75 plus shipping. The early versions of the SDR1K took
as long as 15 minutes to become frequency stable. The addition of the
thermistor results in a dramatic improvement; within 1 minute the radio
is as stable as most radios with high stability oscillators. After 3
minutes, the oscillator is rock solid. /John Basilotto /

John I would caution you in your use of terms High Stability Mod,
stable as most radios with high stability oscillators and rock
solid. I have a late model sdr1k that came with this and I would not
call it High Stability. Maybe improved stability would be a better
term. I leave my unit on 24 hrs a day and my room temp does vary about
up to 20 deg F sometimes (65 to 85 F ). Thruout the day I will check
15MHz WWV and every so often I will recalibrate because it is off 5 to
10 Hz and sometimes 20 to 25 Hz (on a hot day),then in the eve when
cooler I do it again. This is on RECEIVE ONLY, no transmitting. I do
not consider this rock solid or high stability. It is easily
managible with the easy calibration routine, but it does drift and I
wonder how much it would drift if I was transmitting . My other 2 radios
( Icom 756 Pro and 756 Pro II ) are rock solid after warm up and do not
require this frequent calibration. I put up with this because I read
K2OX 's test of the phase noise and how good this osc., is in that
regard, compared to some others.
I love my SDR and listen to a lot of stuff with it and the noise
reduction and filters are superb. Wish there was a more stable osc with
as good phase noise for a reasonable cost. Duffy NA6MM
