Re: [Flexradio] response

2015-02-09 Thread Larry da Ponte
The new web forum, when you ask a question it will search the archives looking
for similar posts to reduce the number of times a questioned is answered. You
can skip this step and just submit your question.  Most of the content on the
web forum is for the 6000, I'm not sure why there is not more conversation
about the 5000/3000 but I do see a few questions on the 1500.  People have been
responsive and the flex staff posts there too.

Re: [Flexradio] Test

The new web based forum has a feature to send all posts as emails so I don't
have to scan the web site to see if anything is happening but if I want to post
I must log in first which is not quite as convenient as sending an email.  You
can post screen shots and the search is pretty good and you can edit your last
post if you see you made a mistake.  The flex staff post frequently when not

[Flexradio] 1500 USB device not recognized

2013-05-31 Thread Larry da Ponte
Hello all - I am getting the following error when turning on my Flex 1500 -
it has been running on this PC without error until now (the question is,
what changed).

Screen shot of error dialog when I click on the USB driver error:

The error is: USB device not recognized: The last USB device you connected
to this computer malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.

Recommendation: Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not
recognize it, your device may not be working properly.

I have followed the following Flex KBs

have not uninstalled this older version. I have tried to run the installer

either.

I answered the following during the setup procedure:

Are all previously installed versions shut down and radio powered off (They
were): OK

Runtime Error (at 2:624):

The error is a standard WMI (Windows Management Interface) reporting error.
It's telling you that it cannot start a service that it has been told to do
so via scripting (the install process no doubt). Check the Event logs to
see if you see any more detailed errors around the time of the install.
There may be more detail listing the actual service it is trying to start.

[Flexradio] New 1500 install trouble

2012-06-29 Thread Larry da Ponte
Hello group - proud owner of a new Flex 1500 but having some install
issues. I'm running a Mac PowerBook 8gb ram, dual core, with win7 64 and
PowerSDR 2.3.5. Upon plugging in the 1500's USB port and powering on the
radio, windows 7 started searching for a driver. It found two drivers but
failed to find two others. The windows dialog shows one USB Composite
Device and four Flex-1500 devices. Three of the 1500 devices failed with
No driver found while the last Flex-1500 device says Flex 1500 Software
Defined Radio ready to use. So - not sure if that's a failure or a
success but since it said the flex was ready I started PowerSDR and see the
flex radio chooser. The Flex 1500 is not on the list but my Flex 3000 and
5000 (with their serial numbers showing) are. So - I think the USB is
connected since the driver recognized the radio but PowerSDR is not able to
see the 1500 and let me select it. Suggestions on next steps?

Thanks

Never mind - uninstall and reinstall of PowerSDR fixed the issue - when I
installed PowerSDR origionally I did not have a Flex 1500 so the drivers

I had to cancel the uninstall and uninstall vspmgr and then restart the
install - will see if I can make a contact now!

Re: [Flexradio] Problem with Flex 3000 antenna tuner

2011-01-11 Thread Larry da Ponte
I had something similar with my 3000 with an much older version of
PowerSDR - I'm including the text from that issue to see if it helps you
diagnose the problem. I picked up a F5K a while later and noticed RF getting
into the audio loop (using heil PR-781 and balanced line in) - I put a balun
at the G5RV feed point and that cured the shack RF issue and I believe I did
not have any more issues with the 3K tuner either. I also switched to the
Granite Digital firewire cable.

-Larry

From Larry:

*Using Trunk 1.18.1 SVN 2920 and Driver 3.4.0.5254 and Flex 3K. After the
first failed attemp to find a match (ATU button turns red) subsequent
attempt to use ATU on any band regardless of antenna match results in the
ATU clicking twice and then no more relay sounds but rig stays in transmit
while the power out slider toggles between 0 and 10 watts (no relay sounds
what so ever) and the ATU will turn red and rig goes back to RX - so
basically the ATU acts like its going through the motions in software but
the F3K relays are silent while the ATU completes its cycle. The only way to
get the ATU functional again is to powre off the F3K and power it back up.
I can reproduce this every time and I believe I've had this issue since day
one with the F3K. I would expect that after a failed match I would be able
to continue to use the ATU on another band without cycling F3K power.*

 From Flex:

*We have been working at trying to duplicate the ATU lock out, but so far
unsuccessful. I can find a frequency where the SWR is above 4:1, receive
the RED no tune, and immediately retry again the ATU goes through the
cycle again..Now once on 6 meters it totally locked up, but this was
due to excessive RF into the computer FireWire cable. An extra clamp on
choke keeps that from happening again..I have also been successful in
retuning after the ATU does stop.. *
*  *
*Another aid that might help is if you do a ctrl-shift-A on the keyboard,
this will bring up the ATU tuning metering, maybe this will help in seeing
what the tuner is doing.. *
*  *
*Also be sure to reset the database, there possibly might be something in
the database causing an issue there.. The ATU background program is under
continuous improvment as issues and enhansements are added.. *
*  *
*Another thought is maybe it's RF getting into the FireWire subsystem,
maybe move the ferrite beads to the computer end rather than the radio
end.. *
*  *
*Let us know,*

I am new to this list, so forgive me if this topic has been discussed
before. I am running a Flex 3000 with PSDR 2.016 on a HP quad core computer
with on-board firewire port. I am very favorably impressed by the radio,
although I am having an intermittent problem with the built-in antenna
tuner. Generally the tuner works quite well on either of my low-band
antenna's ( a big horizontal loop and an inverted L cut for 160 meter CW).
From time to time, the antenna tuner fails to find a match at any frequency
and proceeds to time out with the appropriate error message displayed.
Repeated attempts will not find a better match.

Closing and restarting PSDR does not seem to help. I have placed ferrite
chokes on all leads into and out of the Flex. I have discovered that if I
close PSDR and turn of the radio for 15 seconds or so, I can restart the
radio and computer, and the antenna tuner now works perfectly for an
indefinite period of time. The key seems to be turning off the radio.

The only other problem I am having is that PSDR seems to lock-up
intermittently. There is no pattern to this that I can discern. I suspected
that the firewire cable was making intermittent contact with the computer,
but I have been unable to prove this.

One other question: has anyone been able to use the Flex 3000 successfully
with an external keyer. I would love to use my Idiom Press K3 with the Flex,
but the timing issues interfere even when I reduce the buffer size in PSDR
and in the firewire driver to 256 bytes. I would appreciate any help you can
 offer.

Doing some searching on Google I can't seem to find reference to the new Mac
Book Pro 9 pin 1394 port as being bilingual or not (anyone tried it yet?).
I just received the granite digital 1394B 9 pin to 6 pin (with led) #1041
which does not specify its compatibility with firewire 400 (flex radio 1394
port) and am wondering if this is even going to work - have not tested it as
I'm still waiting for delivery on the Mac Book Pro.

FireWire connectors, while a b-only port will take only
 a FireWire 800 connector

I haven't heard of an 800 protocol adapter that didn't accommodate 400. Not
to say there isn't one (in this world you wouldn't bet against it).

I wouldn't worry too much about buying a uniligual 9 to 6 pin cable.

Is it really possible to make an hc4 sound like an hc5? The hc4 has a
low end roll-off at 600hz while the hc5 rolls off at 300hz. I don't

is possible to attenuate the low end of the hc5 to get an hc4 like
sound.

under the

using the

iC element.

Whether you use the HC-4 element or the HC-5 element depends upon your
operating style. The HC-4 has extra boost in the mid to upper AF
frequencies to enhance intelligibility in crowded band conditions
such as DX

pile-ups, or contests. The HC-5 has more of a full-range frequency
response. I bought the Proset Plus because I thought I wanted the
flexibility of switching between the 2 elements. In practice, I never
switch elements. I am primarily a contester/DX'er so it is always
set to
the HC-4 element. Also, with the equalizer built into PowerSDR, you
can

easily use either element make it sound like the other.

Bottom line: If I were to do it again, I would save the extra money
 buy a
Proset w/HC-4 element. If I ever wanted the more flat frequency
response of

the HC-5, I would simply set it up in the PowerSDR equalizer. If you
prefer, you could get the HC-5 element set the equalizer to
emulate the

HC-4 when you wanted the extra punch in the audio.

PSDR v1.18.5

in PSDR you can set the meter to read SWR during TX, which I have

is always 0.0:1, however if I set the meter

which is correct.

So can someone please do the same test and see if they get the same

If it works for you guys then perhaps my new F3K is faulty?
I hope not, although the first one from the UK importer was DOA!

Re: [Flexradio] F5K balanced line-in -vs- front mic connector

2010-01-04 Thread Larry da Ponte
Thanks all. Doing a little reading on balanced vs unbalanced it seems that
the balanced line will give me some immunity to line noise that I would not
get on the unbalanced mic input (front of F5K) so I assume this is the
biggest reason to go with the balanced line input? Any recommendations on
audio amps that are working well with the F5K? I expect some are using the
W2IHY gear for this?

73s
Larry

2010/1/4 Tim Ellison telli...@itsco.com

You do not need a mic preamp to use the balanced line-in; the PR-781 will
work fine without one, but you will probably have to have the mixer and mic
input gain turned up towards the upper end of the settings to get enough
signal to drive the phone input to 0 dB.

I have a PR-40 and it worked fine without a mic preamp, but I chose to use
one so that I had a bit more headroom for the AF input and it also
utilizes a tube amplifier stage so it has a warmer sound. So using a mic
preamp is mostly a personal preference thing.

1/4 TRS jack to connect to audio processing equipment supplying balanced

However, unlike the front panel Microphone connector, there is no 20dB

 David,

For starters, there is no new firmware for the released version of PowerSDR
1.18.3. It is still 1.3.0.8 for the FLEX-5000 and 1.2.5.6 for the
 FLEX-3000.

You will have to update your firmware when you install v2.0.0. In order to
do that, you must be running v3.5.0.7171 of the Firewire driver.

This is a new Firewire driver and it is 100% compatible with PowerSDR
v1.18.3 and the latest firmware. There are some stability and performance
improvements in the new Firewire driver along with a utility to check out
the Firewire card to see if it is 100% compatible with the FLEX Firewire
 driver.

I recommend that all users of FLEX-x000 software defined radios upgrade to
the new Firewire driver at their convenience so that you will be prepared
for the new version of PowerSDR due out in the next several weeks (if
 testing continues to go well).

When upgrading the Firewire driver, it is *very* important that one follows
the instructions in the following KB article to the letter.
 http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50137.aspx

I would install PowerSDR v1.18.3 in the mean time. I don't think I could
be without an operable FLEX SDR for several weeks.

have a been successfully running my F5KA on a Vista64 machine with
Firewire Driver 3.4.2.6300 and PowerSDR 1.83 for quite some time and loving
 it.

Unfortunately , this past Saturday, Vista found itself functionally
challenged after one of the thousand of updates MS seems to distribute
weekly. So I have restored Vista to a fresh install state and have been
loading all of my software back in.

I have been reading the threads about the workaround for PowerSDR 1.83
users and the new firewire drivers and firmware. I am thinking that if
PowerSDR 2.0 is just around the corner, then maybe I should hold off and
do a new install of the F5KA with the new firmware, firewire drivers when it
 2.0 comes available.

 Any opinions?

BTW, you can all thank me for the massive band opening we will probably
have while my Flex is waiting to be installed : )

 Thanks,

-- Original message --
From: Tim (W4TME) t...@flex-radio.com

To all FLEX-5000 and FLEX-3000 users,

There is a new FLEX Firewire driver that is available for upgrade.

===[ Special Instructions ]==

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAVEAT - IT IS VERY IMPORTANT

With the release of the new FLEX Firewire driver, version
3.5.0.7171, we are changing the way firmware is updated on your
software defined radio. Previously, you executed a file that was
known an auto loader. When you executed this file, the firmware
was placed on your PC's hard driver and then a DOS or Command
window was displayed instructing you through the remainder of the
firmware upgrade process. Running this command prompt based
utility cause a few problems for some newer Windows operating
systems which is one of several reasons we are changing the
firmware upgrade method. The new way of updating firmware is by
using an applet embedded in the FLEX Firewire control panel.

Because current FLEX-x000 firmware with a version number of
1.x.x.x was created with an older version of the Firewire driver,
you CAN NOT upgrade 1.x.x.x based firmware with the new 3.5.0.7171
Firewire driver.

Therefore, you should upgrade your radio's firmware to the latest
1.x.x.x version BEFORE installing the updated FLEX Firewire
driver. If you do not do this or need to revert to a earlier
version of firmware after loading the new driver, the firmware
install process becomes a bit more difficult due to the firmware
binary and driver dependency that exists.

When PowerSDR v2.0.0 is released, it will require v2.x.x.x based
firmware that is 100% compatible with the new Firewire driver, so
once the updated version of PowerSDR is released this caveat will
no longer be applicable.

===[ New Features ] ==

1.) The new FLEX Firewire driver, v3..5.0.7171 is fully compatible
with Win7, Vista and XP using either the 64 or 32-bit flavors.
It is also compatible with all released versions of PowerSDR.

2.) The new Firewire driver has feature that can check the
compatibility of your Firewire host controller (Firewire card)
with the FLEX Firewire driver.

With this version of the FLEX Firewire driver, you can run a
control panel applet that will check your Firewire card's chipset
and tell you if it is compatible with the FLEX Firewire driver. It
will also inform you of any missing service packs or Windows
system driver configuration problems. This new feature will take
the guess work out of determining if your Firewire card will work
with the FLEX Firewire driver.

To access the new applet, once the driver is installed
1.) Open the Firewire control panel
2.) Click on the SYSTEM button at the top.
3.) Check the Look Online for latest info option
4.) Check the Show Additional Details option
5.) Click on the Scan Now button
6.) A description of the Firewire host controller's chipset(s) in
your system will be displayed indicating the support level and any
configuration error that my be present.

If your Firewire host controller's chipset is not fully supported,
then you should consider getting an adapter with a supported
chipset.

[ Upgrading your Firewire driver ]==

When upgrading your FLEX Firewire driver make sure you follow the
instruction very carefully in the following KB article. The
screen displays shown in this article will be a little different
because of the version change, but

Elan,

I don't think it will be 'fixed', as it's not broken; It is intended
to record and play back signals over the air.

One thing you can do though to achieve what you want... Use a third
party audio program such as Audacity in conjunction with VAC. You
can then route the audio from the flex to the input of the audio
program, and use it to record and play back locally without the need
for PowerSDR at all. I use this method for adjusting my audio as
well as recording those rare DX contacts that can then easily be
saved in MP3 format for archiving.

This is exactly my meaning. I had hoped that there was something
in the *.ini file(s) that would allow me to make the 1024x768 window
smaller. I run my 24 display at its maximum (also native)
resolution, and the pSDR window takes up roughly 1/4 of that
1900x1200 real estate.

Barring that, there are a few buttons on the stock desktop which
I could do without. As nearly as I can tell, no one is moving in
that direction. Even the skins in Pretty Betty do not accomplish
that end.
In my humble (not) opinion, the primary window is much too busy to
be the operating window, but I could live with it, especially if
it could be made somewhat smaller. Dudley and Tim assure me it
cannot, at least in its present transmogrification.

The suggestion that I get a second monitor is not particularly
helpful, and I assume it was meant (at least partly) as a joke. I
have a house full of monitors that would do the job, but no place at
my operating stance where there is room to put an extra one.

You still probably want to do some investigative work and see where
the RFI is emanating from with your antenna system and reduce/

the other RFI issues with audio interfaces. The ferrites are not
solving the root cause of the problem, just preventing the problem

eliminate it so before it gets int the shack so that you can prevent
the other RFI issues with audio interfaces. The ferrites are not
solving the root cause of the problem, just preventing the problem
from getting into key equipment components.

BTW, I have had good luck with just about any full-range dynamic vocal
mic with the FLEX radios, like Shure SM-58s and Audio- Technica. I am
currently using the Heil PR-40, but the 781 is a very good mic too,
but all of these need a foot or hand switch to operate PTT.

[Flexradio] F3K ATU dead after first failed attempt to find a match.

2009-06-11 Thread Larry da Ponte
Using Trunk 1.18.1 SVN 2920 and Driver 3.4.0.5254 and Flex 3K. After the
first failed attemp to find a match (ATU button turns red) subsequent
attempt to use ATU on any band regardless of antenna match results in the
ATU clicking twice and then no more relay sounds but rig stays in transmit
while the power out slider toggles between 0 and 10 watts (no relay sounds
what so ever) and the ATU will turn red and rig goes back to RX - so
basically the ATU acts like its going through the motions in software but
the F3K relays are silent while the ATU completes its cycle. The only way to
get the ATU functional again is to powre off the F3K and power it back up.
I can reproduce this every time and I believe I've had this issue since day
one with the F3K. I would expect that after a failed match I would be able
to continue to use the ATU on another band without cycling F3K power.

Re: [Flexradio] Second receiver shown on Flex-3000 PowerSDR screen

2009-06-03 Thread Larry da Ponte
The problem happens when you start PowerSDR and then hit the window maximize
button (upper right corner in the title bar) - if you hover over this button
it will give you a popup help that says maxamize so you know you've got
the right button - click that to maxamize the form and then close PowerSDR,
restart PowerSDR and then you will see the second receiver controls on your
3000. Then, close PowerSDR (without maxamizing his time) and when you
restart PowerSDR the 2nd RX is gone. The problem may occur when you simply
make the main form larger and then close and may depend on screen size.
PowerSDR tries to remember the previous size of the window by storing that
info in the database and loading it on startup but resize logic fails.

recourse until the bug is fixed.

MultiRX, or two independent receive passbands are a feature of any

the FLEX-5000 second PHYSICAL receiver controls are being shown on the

not supposed to be shown, since there is no physical second receiver in the

[Flexradio] 1394 cardbus, Vista, and IRQs

2009-05-28 Thread Larry da Ponte
I am a new Flex 3000 owner and trying to improve PowerSDR freezing issue
with my Lenovo thinkpad T400 (4gb ram Intel Core 2 duo 2.53ghz) My internal
1394 interface was sharing an IRQ with the my sound card (IRQ 17) and I see
no way to change the IRQ for either device (BIOS has no setting for this).
Purchased an add-on 1394A (PCMCIA) card and also see no way to change its
IRQ which is (automatically?) shared with the USB, Intel 45 Express chipset,
and SATA adapter (IRQ 16). IRQ settings are disabled (grayed out regardless
of admin sign-in etc) and manufacturer says there are no drivers needed for
these 1394 adapters (comes with OS?). Both adapters work but I have
freezing issues with PowerSDR and the 3000. It seems that there is no way
to control which IRQ you use (in my case?) and when they are shared with
other devices(?). This laptop has a vista performance base score of 4.1.
Running PowerSDR 1.18 (came with unit) and latest drivers from Flex home
page. So - is there a way to control which IRQs are used by the 1394
controllers or is this even my problem. DPC is around 1200 when the freeze
happens, no other apps running other than PowerSDR. This happens several
times during an operating session. Have disabled indexer and killed non
esential windows services.

Re: [Flexradio] Frequency change by sliding across panadapter

I had a similar problem with the pan adapter and cleared it by resetting the

sudden it will slide part way and then hang up. If I let up on the mouse
and click again I can continue fine.

I haven't changed anything that I can recall. Changing the freq this
way on Betty works fine, no problems. The CPU usage is down around
10% to 15%. It doesn't change when the slider hangs up.

 Any suggestions?

Best of, however, they are affordable.

Way to go Flex for going the extra measure.

If you follow Paul's directions to the letter you should find the

[Flexradio] Mouse no longer drags pan adapter Flex 3000

2009-04-30 Thread Larry da Ponte
After installing Microsoft updates I find that (PowerSDR 1.18.0/Flex
3000/Windows XP SP3/Latest fire wire driver) I can no longer drag the pan
adapter to change frequency - prior, if I was to hold down the left mouse
button and drag the pan adapter it would scroll the pan as I dragged - after
installing the windows updates when I click on the pan the mouse pointer
turns into a hand and nothing happens, when I release the mouse the pan
adapter jumps to what was probably the scrolled to frequency.

Thanks

Dave,

I have seen more issues with the XP Media Center, you are
better off with XP Home Addition. If you want a really
basic XP OS to run, if you already have an XP license, do
a Google search on Windows Fundamental. This is a very
basic version of XP and will run the Flex very efficiently..

From what I read I would guess it does not have dual processor
support, which means shortly Flex will leave it behind. Am I right?

Anybody install it on an MP machine and can validate that it's
uniprocessor only? Cuz, if it is, it's not going to be very useful.
OTOH, you SHOULD be able to bludgeon the MP HAL and NTOSKRMP onto the
system with a bit of work.

I think it would definitely worth trying... Note that this is a good
alternative to using XP Embedded (because it's BASED on XP Embedded) as
I was discussing a couple of weeks ago.

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] PowerSDR With HRD and DM780

2009-04-20 Thread Larry da Ponte
In preparation for my 3000 I set up PowerSDR 1.18.0 in demo mode, com0com
2.2.0.0 x64, VAC 4.9.0.1652 full, and HRD build 1989 - set up com0com
according to the powerpoint install doc on Flex site and told PowerSDR's CAT
menu to ID as PowerSDR and set HRD to talk to a Flex 1000 - also tried
setting PowerSDR as TS-2000 and HRD to talk to TS-2000 - in both cases after
I change VFO-A frequency in HRD a couple of times PowerSDR becomes
unresponsive (UI locked up) and HRD says it can't communicate. com0com is
set to emulate baud rate on HRD side (COM7) and enable buffer overrun on
PowerSDR side (COM17). So - using PowerSDR in demo mode this way may be
invalid in which case I apologize for this post - wanted to get software
issues out of the way as much as possible before the 3k arrives. another
wild card is Windows 7 64 bit in which case I know that is obviously not a
supported configuration - PowerSDR seems to run fine in demo mode, listened
to sample IQ files and decoded some DRM sample - also VAC is working fine -
just not CAT. Also set boot option to not require driver signing. PC is a
ThinkPad core 2 duo 2.53ghz + 4gb ram. No other apps running besides HRD
and PowerSDR. Posting on top of tihs thread in case it is related to the
CAT TX bug.

I have installed the latest PSDR 1.18 version and have something unusual
happening. I use HRD with DM780 for digital modes and with the new 1.18
version my SDR1K is not keyed. The DM780 sowftware appears to function
correctly showing the TX buffer being keyed, but the PSDR or SDR1K never
 switch to transmit.

I have both imported my 1.16.2 database into 1.18 and reentered all the
data to build a new database. Same problem. However, if I use the 1.16.2
version, everything works fine as it has been. No other changes to my system
 other than PSDR versions.

Any ideas on what might be wrong here?
