[Flexradio] First iOS QSOs

2016-08-20 Thread Richard Lawn
This app is quite amazing and I thank all who were involved in creating it,
making the 6000 series radios even better. I just worked 2 stations in
Russia on cw from the comfort of my lounge chair in the living room! I'm
getting some latency issues on SSB but that could be caused by my own
network. I look forward to playing with this a great deal more in the
future. KUDOS!

Re: [Flexradio] Graphics Card Issues

2016-01-24 Thread Richard Lawn
I've had the same intermittent problems as have others I think. No solution
found yet. I have one of Neal's computers and will see if there is a new
driver available for my graphics card if I can still remember how to do
this. Frankly, there have been way too many com port and SmartSDR CAT
issues for my comfort zone and I've spent numerous hours this week with
others helping to try and rectify them. I'm getting closer but added grey
hair in the process!

Re: [Flexradio] Log4OM issue

2015-05-18 Thread Richard Lawn
I solved the problem late last night. Turned out to be a virtual serial
port conflict between Virtual Serial Port Manager. I had a pair set up for
some unknown reason that conflicted with the port created by SmartCAT. As
soon as I deleted that pair Log4OM worked perfectly.

[Flexradio] SmartSDR Log4OM

2015-05-17 Thread Richard Lawn
I've reached the top of my pay grade with my new 6300, SMartSDR and Log4OM.
I was unable to get SmartSDR to communicate with Log4OM so I upgraded
Log4OM to the latest version. Things started to deteriorate as now not only
does Log4OM not work I get the dreaded blue screen and the computer
restarts every time I try to either omni OmniRig or Log4OM. I've tried
uninstalling OmniRig and reinstalling it without success. I'm not quite at
the panic point but close since all of my logs are in Log4OM. Any thoughts
out there?

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR and Falling prices

2015-03-02 Thread Richard Lawn
For what it's worth, which I know isn't much, I too would gladly pay a
reasonable, price for software upgrades. I do think this process could
breath new life into the 3000 and 5000 which are great radios and far
superior to much of what's out their from the pacific rim. As a satellite
user I doubt I'll ever part with my 5000 with the v/u unit. It's an
amazingly capable radio and very versatile compared to most on the market
today including the new flex 6000 series radios, none of which have the
capability of running vhf and uhf out of the box. Sellers of their Powersdr
based radios should be patient and market to the right consumers. If you've
got one like mine and want to sell it look for the VHF, UHF EME crowd.

[Flexradio] 5000A Low Output

2014-11-07 Thread Richard Lawn
I've recently noticed that my output from Flex5000A seems low on some
bands. For instance on CW 15 is down to about 60 watts out and 20 hovers
around 75 or so. 40 meters seems to be about right at 100 watts. This does
not seem normal nor does it seem to be where it once was. I had this radio
serviced by Flex not long ago. I'm curious what other 5KA owners experience
in terms of output.

Re: [Flexradio] ATU and power meter problem

While I still have no response from the ATU Ihave learned from several who
use the fully bundled flex5000a that the meter does not work when the
flex5kA has been upgraded with the v/u module. Something I think due to the
lack of a bridge pickup to grab the rf. Output is not affected.

I did submit a ticket to FRS about the ATU unit not working as the seller
insists that it was working fine.

Re: [Flexradio] Power SDR on a Mac

I'm running Power SDR on an iMac i5 processor with only 4meg RAM. But I'm
running WIn 7 under BootCamp. It works just fine and have been doing so for
some time now. Just be care to make sure you update BootCamp when you
update the main Mac OSX to a significant new OS like Lion to Mountain Lion,
or whatever. I thought the BootCamp upgrade was automatic with the Mac
system upgrade and learned that it is not and it can create some issues if
you don't upgrade both.

Good luck and I suspect the Mini will be fine but does it support FireWire?

Jerry is correct on all points. The FLEX-5000 has a stout front end and
it will take a signal in excess of 0 dBm to saturate the ADCs.

You should be OK unless the RX antenna is in the near field of the
transmitting antenna and you are running very high power. My antennas
are in the near field of each other (5' separation) and I have no issues
at 100 watts other than pegging the S meter on the RX2 :-)

If you are worried about it, then there are some devices that will
switch out the RX antenna when transmitting from companies like DX
Engineering and Heros just to name two.

BTW, lack of muting is not an oversight. In fact, unmuted
simultaneous receive is one of the features of the 5000 that Flex
 mentions on 5000 features page
 http://www.flex-radio.com/Products.aspx?topic=f5k_features : The
FLEX-5000 was designed from the ground up to be a true full duplex
radio that can transmit and receive simultaneously without the need
for a second installed receiver. With this capability, the FLEX-5000
is positioned to be the ultimate CW rig ever made. For phone use, you
will be able to monitor your actual audio that is being transmitted
rather than using a monitor circuit in the audio chain.

I just downloaded CW Skimmer to try. While I have it working with my PWR SDR
Flex 5000A, the set up parameters that seem to work do not match what they
recommend in the knowledge base:
Under the Audio Tab setting the Knowledge Base says to select WDM and VAC 2
and 1. My system works only if I select MME. Can someone clarify this.

[Flexradio] RF in Audio with Amp

2011-04-24 Thread Richard Lawn
It seems that I'm getting some RF in my audio when using my AL811H with
5000A. I'm keying am through a little AmpKeyer device. Any suggestions on
where to put ferrites? I've used a few already bu no luck so far.

I've experienced some audio distortion in the past but that seem to be due
to over driving with mic gain to high.

[Flexradio] Audio Distortion

2011-04-13 Thread Richard Lawn
I've not posted in a while since I've had no recent problems since the
upgrade to v. 2.0.19, but I've just suddenly discovered terribly distorted
audio with an echo as well back in SSB mode. I had this problem months ago
with an earlier version and got help solving it. I checked levels and only
running about 15 on mic gain and DX is set to about 4. Main Transmit meter
mic setting shows levels running about 0db on peaks and averaging less
overall. In the Settings DSP - AGC/ALC panel I do not have Enabler selected
but have also tried it selected with no improved result.

Should I just make the upgrade to the latest version? If I do will I suffer
any CW issues as I'm one of those old guys who stills enjoys that mode hi
hi.

I did have success getting MacDoppler to control PowerSDR via

[Flexradio] Still Frustrated

2010-10-27 Thread Richard Lawn
I'm feeling old and frustrated! I love the new Flex 5000A receiver but am
having very little luck with digital modes and CW. It's been recommended
that I not use HRD but switch to mini-deluxe which I did. DM780 receives
fine but won't activate PTT. Then I tried Fldigi and found that it had a
very limited number of com port choices which don't match my options. PWRSDR
is set to com 9 here and I do not have PTT enabled. Should I? If so which
com port should it be set to?

I've had quite a time getting this set up for digital modes and CW, which
still isn't working well. I have to say that I've never had so little on air
time with a new radio. I seem to be spending all my available time trying to
figure out how things work. Sorry to complain but I find it frustrating. Is
there some tutorial somewhere that provides an easy way to set the radio up
for each mode - proper levels, recommended digi mode software etc? Maybe
there is and I just haven't had time to find it.

I'd like to hear from anyone using the 5000A on the satellites. I'm
interested in the software you are using, rotor control, and of course any
quirks or issues you've encountered. I'm thinking of clearing out my shack
including the FT-847 and trying the 5000A with VHF/UHF module.

[Flexradio] Flex Users on Macs

2010-07-24 Thread Richard Lawn
I'd like to hear from a few users who are using their Flex Radios with Macs
running under Windows. Which bridge software are you using - Boot Camp,
Parallels, etc.? Have you encountered any difficult problems to solve along
the way. I'm considering the 5000A down the road.
