Hi Matthew and Steve,

KJ4TN’s message about the S3 noise level minimum on the Flex 3K describes my
experience as well. While it varies from band to band a bit, my S Meter
never approaches zero, including when the antennas are disconnected or when
I am connected directly to the dummy load. Noise level runs around 100.
Preamps have a small effect. Sent back to the factory last year for new
preamps plus complete checkout and was given assurances every thing was A-OK
at that time. Everything else runs perfect! Using PowerSDR v2.7.2. Maybe a
calibration or adjustment issue?? Not overly concerned but curious just the
same. Thanks!

Re: [Flexradio] Recommendation for Neal Campbell's computer services

2013-10-19 Thread Ross Stenberg
I'm not sure that you understand the architecture of the 6500/6700 radios.
All of the heavy computational functions are performed in the internal
DSP of the radio. The computer is little more than the MMI (man machine
interface) for the radio consisting of the display and user interface. You
can use the terms thin client or whatever but the bottom line is you need
not worry much about the computer as long as it has an Ethernet port,
display and input devices. Just about any computer sold today for home use
will be fine assuming of course that it has those basic functions. That is
one of the driving reasons behind the Flex 6000 development. Nothing against
Neal, but I would rather not see people waste their money. The only other
concern would be the ancillary programs one would use in conjunction with
the radio and some of that may be changing in the future.

There are different strategies in introducing new technology. One is to
introduce new technology on the low priced tier of your products knowing
that the top tier segment is quite conservative and resistant to change.
One the technology migrates from low price to high price products, its
proven and acceptable. You could say that the current style of SDRs came in
this manner. The SDR1000 was a low-cost product that proved the hypothesis
that an SDR transceiver was viable as a ham transceiver. The 5000, 3000 and
1500 then established the product tiers, all the while using the technology
introduced by the SDR1000.

This time, Flex is using a more traditional (to the hobby market) strategy
of introducing new technology on the high priced tier. This is done by
companies that have established their brand trustworthiness with their
customers and that trust means that high priced technology is safe enough
to try. Granted, the technology being exploited by the Signature line of
radios isn't radically new but new in the ham world (or maybe the
commercial ham world). As the upper tiers are accepted, this strategy then
has the company migrating the technology downward to its lower priced
products. This is because experience gained in producing the higher-priced
products provides the information needed to make things cheaper and ideas
to apply it to lower priced products.

Its a safe bet that Flex will migrate the Signature line down to all the
price points over time. Just let them fly at the cost is no object level
of product for a while. Its coming!

I have to say that I'm surprised by the hostility that still exist from
some folks with the mere mention of SDR. A lot of folks are just
resistant to change even if it's change for the better as in the case of
SDR. I cannot imagine ever owning a so called conventional radio ever
again. I still will never forget the time I was in an online chat during
a live broadcast of the Dayton Hamvention and mentioned the fact that I
owned a Flex and a guy responded back to me that using the internet to
operate was not real radio as if I was using CQ 100 or something. It's
amazing the misconceptions that some people have. Good luck Lee!

Many of the flex owners tend to like new technology so in my opinion you are
just seeing those that like the bleeding edge. I would not read too much

Hi all, just got my flex-5000 going again here and the power switch does not
appear to work. I noticed it a few months ago that the flex was on when
it should not have been. I have tried to turn off with the blue front
button, but it won't go off. So I have been pulling the DC plug. Plugging
the DC back in directly, the flex waits a few seconds and turns on without
touching the front panel on switch. Seems to be working fine other than
that. Any ideas to reset the switch, or is it just a bad switch - failed
in the on position. Note that the switch does light up with the blue color
when the DC power is applied.

Thanks and 73

You need to go through the audio chain setup sequence. It is described in
the KB library. In a nutshell:

1. Turn off all options, e.g. DX, CPDR, VOX, DEXP in the mic window on
the front console.
2. Set mic gain to mid scale (35).
3. Open the Mixer menu.
4. Select your mic input.
5. Set TX power to 0 (so you don't actually transmit or you can use a
dummy load).
6. Select mic input level display on the TX meter.
7. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the slider in the MIXER for
not more than 0dB on meter.
8. Set TX meter to read EQ level.
9. Open the Equalizer menu.
10. Set the TX EQ the way you want it.
11. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the TX Preamp gain control
for not more than 0dB on meter.
12. Open the SetupDSPAGC/ALC window.
13. Enable the leveler (check the box).
14. Set Leveler Max Gain to 0dB.
15. Set TX meter to read ALC.
16. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the mic gain (front of
console) for not more than 0dB on the TX meter.
17. Turn on DX and DEXP if you want.
18. Key the rig, talk normally, and verify ALC stays below 0dB.
19. Turn TX power back up and transmit.

Re: [Flexradio] Differences between the 5K 6K ?

2012-05-24 Thread Ross Stenberg
I would expect the PC requirements for the 6K platform to be extremely
modest since all of the radio processing is done by the ARM processor
in the radio and the PC is simply the client for the GUI much like a Web
browser. I believe Flex has speculated that even a netbook type computer
will suffice. Just about any computer available with a Ethernet port
today should be just fine since it will be primarily just used as a
display interface and for secondary accessory processing.

Not too exciting news. I am glad to hear that we have some Medium Frequency

effort. The requirements remind me of the lowfer band (160-190 khz) limitations.

This is almost part 15 output.
How about giving back the lower portion of the 220 band.

Plug it into the RX1 input and then select that for your receive antenna on RX1.

All you have to do is change the DDS IF in Setup to a lower value than

Re: [Flexradio] AMD chip

2011-12-20 Thread Ross Stenberg
Bob's comments about his new computer prompted me to send this Email
that I wrote a few weeks ago and never sent. I should note that I have
been preaching simple AMD quad core computers since purchasing a $400
machine at Staples over six months ago that has been working flawlessly
for me.

I was attempting to be subtle and make others think. Being more direct,
the current crop of most PCs handle the job fine without resorting to
unnecessary tweaking and multiple operating system boot configurations
to get the job done for the typical Flex user. A few less CPU cycles
when the usage is already so low and perhaps lowering the DPCs from say
150 us to 50 us is not going to make a bit of real world difference.
What is under the hood is cheap and effective now a days. Gboost just
one of the easy means to prove it to yourself. The only real culprit
anymore is high DPCs, and what I mean by high is above 1 ms (I used that
intentionally since it reads better than a whopping 1000 us :^) There is
a reason that The Flex driver DPC report and DCLAT use that as a
breaking point for real time audio drop out issues. I don't like to see
people reading the hype and start chasing their tails, unless of course
they enjoy tweaking and that is part of their hobby.
My experience only relates to the 5000 and 3000. I believe the
latency issue with the 1500 is a horse of another color, but don't
really know.

Another odd thing I noticed about the flex 3000, comparing it to my
home brew receivers, which are very simple receivers, single
conversion superhet, no rf amp, high Q tuned circuit antenna input,
455 KHz IF, a good filter, think an old table top tube receiver like
the all American 5 with a good IF filter, and I can hear signals on
them with no antenna hooked up, or the wrong antenna selected, and the
flex picks up nothing.
If on 80 meters and I pick the 40 meter dipole, the homebrew receivers
just have the S meter go down to about half.

On the flex, I get high noise and no signal unless its REALLY strong.
If I put the antenna selector to the homebrew, even the strongest
signals do not show up on the flex, if I reverse it, the homebrew
picks up most signals and they are good copy.

That is with NO rf amp in the homebrew.

If I could figure out a way to make a flex like panadaptor for the
homebrew receivers, I would not need the flex, but how many tubes
would THAT take?
I got spoiled and now need the good panadaptor, hard to operate
without one after having one

Running here PSDR V 2.2.3 with Flex 5000. The only time I occasionally
hear some type of peak distortion or muddy-type distortion on 75
meters

is when listening to strong AM signals operating class E type rigs. I
don't hear on it on broadcast AM, commercial SW AM, or amateurs running
current transceivers or even most boatanchor rigs. I also don't hear
when

listening to AM transmissions on 40 or 20 meters. 160 antenna is down so
no opinion there.

On 10 meters AM, I generally shun away from being too judgmental on
quality AM reception, since, besides fading and other atmospheric
anomalies, many I've heard and/or worked are not using current state of
the art type transceivers, but old drifty boatanchors, converted CB rigs
and trashy CB linears, modified commercial rigs, modified commercial FM
rigs, or cobbled together old electronic car parts.

Maybe, since DTS, EMS, AEX, and myself all live in the Northeast, maybe
the AM reception problem, at least on 75, is more localized.

Which version of PSDR are you using Brett? Version 2.2.3 fixed a very

big issue with AM reception (AGC tracking the sideband energy rather

than the carrier energy) that was present in all the previous 2.x.x

versions and the later 1.x.x versions. That being said, I do notice
what
sounds like peak distortion on some strong signals when using the AM

mode. I do not hear it when listening with other conventional AM
receivers that I use. Adjusting the AGC-T slider in PSDR doesn't
seem to
stop it, but I wonder if adjusting the variables in the DSP AGC/ALC

setup tab might address it. The max gain and attack values might
be
a good starting point for experimentation. Curiously, I never hear
that
distortion with PSDR when listening to strong signals on the AM
broadcast band, so it may have something to do with selective fading
and
the way PSDR deals with it.

As Tim may have been inferring with his question, the peak
distortion
phenomenon is not present on those signals when listening in SAM
mode.
Unfortunately, some of the older AM transmitters being used are not

perfectly stable and tend to move a few Hz when modulated. The SAM
detector warbles now and then with those stations as it tracks them
on
peaks. It's most notable on 10 meter AM where there's a
multiplication
factor being applied to the VFO in the older transmitters. So, at
this
point, I find that I switch back and forth between AM and SAM to see

what seems to work best with different stations I run into. I'd be
curious what others may have noticed when operating AM or when SW
listening in the AM or SAM modes.

Re: [Flexradio] New Flex 3000 and firewire card.

2011-12-13 Thread Ross Stenberg
I can understand Flex's frustration with this. I have a PCI and PCIe
card both purported to not work correctly on their list and have not had
problems with either of them. Go figure, there are obviously many
variables. After all, what are standards for :^)

initialize properly with PowerSDR.

We do not know for certain, but we suspect that there is a bus timing
issue that could be associated with over-clocking. Most PC's BIOSes
have a default configuration that does auto over-clocking. In my
experiences, replacing the PCIe card with the older PCI card resolves
the problems in 100% of the cases. My FW card of choice right now is
the LaCie card.

Well I really don't like headphones for one, and more importantly

listening to that many radios at one time is having the ability to
spatially orientate the various audio sources, headphones and audio

In all of my many cases, the resolution or CAUSE dealt with the SOUND

Here's a good one. I have been having trouble with some rfi on a couple
of my wire antennas causing a slight echo in my ssb audio transmission.
I have no doubt it was the rfi causing it because as soon as I added a
coax rf choke right below the balun on the first antenna the echo went
away when using that antenna, but remained on the other two antennas.
The echo only showed up when I was using my MultiSwitcher which must
have been where the rf was causing the problem because if I plugged the
mic directly into the Flex, no echo. In addition, I could see the
unselected leds on my remote antenna switch control flicker when I
talked. All of these effects went away on antenna 1 as soon as the rf
choke was added.

So I was on a net on 40M the other night testing antenna number 3 (no rf
choke there yet at that time) and a station who checked in after me
proceeded to inform me that the echo on my signal was not caused by rfi,
but it was due to the latency/delay in my computer running the sdr. I'm
currently running the Flex on a Neal super computer and the average
latency is around 10 microseconds with some peaks up to a little under
50 microseconds - not too shabby. When I informed him that plugging the
mic directly into the radio eliminated the problem, he launched into
some highly technically suspect explanation about the lack of delay in
the MultiSwitcher offsetting the latency in the computer so the echo
disappeared. Nothing I said could change his mind. Now I'm wondering
which school he got his Phd from so I'll be sure none of my
grandchildren go there.

The good news is that after I added coax chokes to the other wire
antennas the echo and the flickering leds disappeared when using them
too.
The bad news is that there are still some technically inept hams out
there when it comes to sdr who may convince others of their erroneous
point of view.

For the mic connector on Heathkit DX-100 I just cut the pin off of a
PL259 and put a solder blob in it place and screwed it on. Also works on
old VTVM's. There was enough RF on the D-104 that the cat would not
touch it.

You know, Ross, when I first received my 3000 back in the days when
the earth was young, I took one look at that mike connector,

and went to Radio Shack. I bought some of those RJ connectors and
their best quality crimper, thirty feet of eight conductor cable, a
metal box and an eight terminal strip and then went home to find the
coil of braid that I normally use for grounding stuff. I squeezed
the braid open so I could push a suitable length of the cable through,
saving the rest for future similar applications, and then attached
one of those goofy RJ connectors to one end. I now had a well
shielded cable that I could ground as wisdom demands. Then I drilled
a few holes in that metal box so that all of my existing mike
connectors could be attached as desired. I do go from D-104 to
Pilots head set and even one of those shiny gold things from Heil. I
took a piece of paper and very carefully identified each pin and then
fastened the now nicely shielded cable from the 3000 to the
respectively numbered terminals on the strip which I had mounted in
the metal box. Then I found all the manuals for my mikes and wired the
appropriate connectors to the desired screws on that terminal strip.
Yes, I did leave out the fact that the D-104 and pilots head set do
require some trivial additional work. And just in case you've
forgotten where some of that information might be found I suggest you
look on page 65 of the April 2010 QST.

Suddenly I realized that perhaps I had made a universal adapter and
never again would I have to beg some piece of metal to be nice to me.

This will not solve the most difficult microphone problem that I have
encountered so far: how does one keep the cat from chewing off the
foam thing on the mike?

Re: [Flexradio] Optimized XP or Win7 Configuration

2011-11-26 Thread Ross Stenberg
I used to build my own as well, in fact is was a part time business for
me (buy a few sub assembly's, plug them together, mount a few things,
run a CD that configures everything) but now I find that just buying a
PC on sale or one that is not necessarily the latest and greatest is
more cost effective. Even the low end machines are super now a days.
Building your own sounds impressive but it not nearly as difficult as
building a K3 for example, which is nothing. You would be hard pressed
to buy a PC today that can't run PowerSDR effectively. Most of those
having problems are trying to use older PC's or laptops. It amazes me
what you can buy now for not that much money. I spent something like
$400 for a computer with a terabyte drive, 8Gbytes of memory, four
cores, and the list goes on, six months ago. I think that Windows 7
64bit is probably the most expensive partinside. It does not even sneeze.

I know this is not a popular option for some but you can save
boatloads of money on PC's by buying the pieces separately and
assembling the computer yourself. I did it for years until this
current HP computer which is actually a hand me down from the XYL.
Back when I got my now departed 5000 (sob sob), she bought a new PC
and I got this one which has an AMD 64 duo core . It was perfectly
adequate for the 5000 and now works well with my 1500.
Anyway, next time I'm in a position to upgrade, I will go the route
of buying the pieces and assembling my own again. You get a lot more
computer for your money that way and if you follow recommendations
from Neal on mobos and peripheral cards, you can custom tailor the
machine to give the best overall performance with your Flex.

Writer's remorse, a better analogy would have been about as difficult
as adding RX2 to my SDR-5000 :^)

Re: [Flexradio] Worst case scenario

2011-11-24 Thread Ross Stenberg

Just another thing to be thankful for.

On 11/24/2011 1:31 PM, Neal Campbell wrote:

Why is it we always go for the worst outcome first?

I have been building and testing a computer today and everything was going
smoothly until it just turned off. Would not power up no matter what!

So, I unplug everything from the motherboard and bring out the PSU tester,
which shows a bad power supply. So, I plug in the bench PSU and try the
computer, no luck. So I put the power supply tester on the bench power
supply and it shows dead.

This is too much stuff dead but my first suspicion is that the PSU tester
isn't good so I throw it away and look for my spare one (not found).

Then I look down and see the power cord is not fully plugged in. AHA!

So I unplug the bench PSU and get the PSU tester out of the trash. Plug
the original PSU back in, hit the power button and nothing happens! So I
plug the PSU tester into the original PSU and still no reading. Well, maybe
the original PSU really did die!

So I am looking in inventory for a replacement PSU and see I have none
available (the bench PSU is very underpowered for anything but testing).
But, I figured, at least confirm the motherboard isn't dead so I plug in
the bench PSU and hit the power button, nothing.

Usually at this stage its a sign I need to walk away because frustration
will start to blind me. So I push back my chair to leave and then see the
power cord for the power outlet on my test bench has worked its way out of
the power socket.

Why didn't I check that at the beginning and save myself an hour of
frustration and picking my PSU tester out of trash twice???

At least its up and working normally again!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-1500 and USB 3.0?

2011-11-20 Thread Ross Stenberg
Just curious Peter, why are you so against 1394? I know that it will not
be around forever, but not much is when it comes to the world of
computing. It serves its purpose now, however.

Exactly. Putting the processing on the host, and not on the radio, opens the
radio to limitless possibilities.

Now if we could JUST lose the Firewire and USB interfaces, and replace them
with Gigabit Ethernet we'd really be in great shape.

I'd buy a 5000 in a second if it used GigE. While it has 1394... not a chance.

Re: [Flexradio] Overclocking Utilities Warning

2011-11-19 Thread Ross Stenberg

You also get the benefit of more heat in the shack on a cold day.

I was much into overclocking but, as the years went by, I decided it
wasn't worth the effort because all you really get out of it is bragging
rights on the forums.
