50 Ohms, nominal, at the frequency band(s) being received at that point in time. Re: [Flexradio] What
Jay, Your analysis is probably correct but if it will make you feel any better I once commented on 40 meters that I used my V/U upgrade along with an Elecraft XV144 to watch both the input and output of repeaters. I thought that was a perfectly normal thing to do but you have no idea how much abuse came down on my head because I actually used equipment like that to listen to a repeater! The only time things were worse was when I had admitted, one day, that I had owned my flex radio for some time but didn't feel I had come anywhere near to mastering it! Wow! [Flexradio] What finally happened with failure to connect problem
Dudley, Thanks for all your help with my failure to connect problem with a Flex 3000 and PSDR 2.6.4. As we could not resolve this by email, I sent the radio in for repair. Although Flex replaced two ICs I don't think this was actually the problem, because when I received the radio back it had exactly the same symptoms: the PC reported the Firewire working, but the radio couldn't be found. Re-installing, changing drivers, changing cables, etc. had no effect. I finally disabled the motherboard Firewire port (with VIA chips) in the BIOS. Then I installed a Firewire card (with TI chips). The problem disappeared instantly and the radio now works fine. I removed both MalwareBytes and Superantispyware, also Adobe Air, and it went away. Have not reloaded them yet, but may in the future as an experiment. [Flexradio] What are other folks using for performance microphones?
The Pro Headset with the HC-6 element from Heil, while a beautiful piece of gear, is not going to work, the on-ear headphones are uncomfortable..I will stay with my Extreme Isolation EX-29 headphones. But I am wondering if there is a better pileup buster microphone out there. I am currently using the FT817 stock mike. Obviously the Heil gold-line is a popular choice. Gold Elite is $160, but there is also HM-12 for $70. Given that we can tailor our audio output, is there a preferred choice that folks have? Or should I stay with the FT817 stock microphone (sometimes it feels like I have to yell to break the pileup..at least my wife says I am yelling.but maybe that's just me getting old). I'm using a Heil BM-10 lightweight headset with the HC-5 element and very frequently I get unsolicited reports of great audio, no matter whether I am running the F5K, 3K, or one of my boat anchor rigs. Re: [Flexradio] What are other folks using for performance microphones?
I mounted a Heil MB1 (also with an HC 6 element) on to s pair of Bose Quiet phones with a home made mount. Very comfortable for long sessions. Isolates me from distrations, too. These are plugged into the front of the F5K. I have a pretty sharp (4 DX compansion, boosted treble, etc.) mic profile for this one. Then, I have a Heil PR781 on a Luxo extending desk boom with a generic shock mount and a Heil foam pop cover. I pull this one over when not using the headphones, and when I want to sound like a broadcaster. This one's plugged into the balanced mic input in the back. The $15 foam pop filter was probably the best addition to any of this setup. Re: [Flexradio] What are other folks using for performance microphones?
I'm using an HM-10 dual element with a pair of Radio Shack over-the-ear headphones. The phones were pretty inexpensive, but got great reviews on eHam, and I agree. When the going gets really tough, I use a Radio Sport headset with boom mic. These are kind of expen$ive (~$400), but are the best headset I've ever used. For both setups I use a Linemaster Hercules foot switch. It's big, HEAVY, and indestructible. 73, Jim KQ6EA On 12/22/2011 02:33 AM, Mark Lunday wrote: The Pro Headset with the HC-6 element from Heil, while a beautiful piece of gear, is not going to work, the on-ear headphones are uncomfortable..I will stay with my Extreme Isolation EX-29 headphones. [Flexradio] What did I do to mess up PSK xmit?
Hi, Two days ago, my Flex 5000A and the software were working fine on PSK. But, yesterday, when tried to call a station, my gear refused to transmit. It receives just fine and I can hear the Flex switch from receive to transmit but DigiPan locks up and the PSDR screen shows 0 watts output. Something must have happened to change a software setting but I can't find anything to be different. I can send CW and SSB so the radio itself is OK, and it also shows power output when I click on ATU. Here's my setup: Flex 5000A, Win 7, PSDR 2.0.22, VAC 4.09, Com0Com and DigiPan 2.0. Any hints would be much appreciated. [Flexradio] what computer power best for FLEX1500 and future?
Now that I have realized I need more computing power, I am going to buy a new lap top. What processor and RAM combo are best for the FLEX1500 and future applications? I asked at the EME conference and was told that my current Pentium 1.6G 2G RAM computer would probably do the job, and it does, except on CW transmit, my main microwave operating mode (with transverters). I know an Intel dualcore 2.2G and 3G RAM 64bit runs my FLEX1500 and PowerSDR v2.0.16 fine as I tested it with a friend's newer laptop. Thanks in advance for consideration. Happy New Year. Re: [Flexradio] what version of power sdr to setup.
Tim is correct. You can set it up and get running under 2.0.7 with the factory installed driver 0.4.1.2. When you are comfortable, you can upgrade to 0.4.1.4 to get the sidetone volume control running. No other impact or need for firmware upgrade at this time. --- Graham On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 1:30 PM, Tim Ellison telli...@itsco.com wrote: PowerSDR v2.0.7 was just announced on the FlexEdge reflector. [Flexradio] what a team...
Hi all, Just to express my thanks to Klaus (DK7XL) in Germany, I sent my Flex-3000 to him on Monday for the pre-amp mod, and it's on its way back already... I must admit I have been having withdrawal sysmptoms, so much so I have been phoning round the UK distributors for a 1500 no such luck. Thanks Flex and all your teams around the world, seems they all have one thing in common... Richard, Yes, I was mistaken. PowerSDR will notice that the serial number is different and will force a download of the EEPROM data when you switch radios. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info -Original Message- From: Richard Clafton [mailto:rclaf...@riroc.com] Sent: Friday, May 28, 2010 12:03 AM To: 'Ray - K9DUR'; 'paim'; FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz Subject: RE: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0 I was under the impression, from looking at the database.xml that information was stored based on serial number. Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
I shall assume you can have both radio's plugged in (with 2 fire wire ports available) and powered up - but you have to select the Master in the flex driver to determine which one you will be taking control of? That does not work so well (tried it yesterday with a FLEX-5000 and Flex-3000). Only power up or physically connect one radio at a time and everything works fine. Running multiple radios from a single PC is a one of the primary design goals of the Deep Impact software. -Tim -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Richard Clafton Sent: Friday, May 28, 2010 12:34 AM To: rclaf...@riroc.com; 'Tim (W4TME)'; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0 I suppose another way you could run multiple radios is to have multiple users: As it stores the pertinent information within your profile in the following folder - for example mine: C:\Users\rclafton\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 You could have radio1 and radio2 users Which would store the database.xml and other relevant files in their own appdata folders like so. C:\Users\radio1\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 C:\Users\radio2\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 That way you can maintain unique information such as TX Profiles per radio. When PowerSDR inits, it looks at the S/N of the radio and compares it to what is in the database, if they do not match, then it will populate the DB with the EEPROM data from the attached radio. You can do this with multiple FLEX-5000s or FLEX-5000 and a FLEX-3000. Eric was really crafty when he coded in this fail-safe feature Although if you want speedier loading, you can use the runtime option to tell PowerSDR what base folder to use for storing the variable user data. http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50469.aspx And would probably be the preferred method of running multiple radios on one computer. This is how I run a FLEX-1500 and a FLEX-5000/3000 on the same computer *at the same time*. -Tim --- W4TME FlexRadio Systems - Info Management Admin. Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
This is how I imagine it would work: 1. Load the driver on the computer with no Flex-5000 attached, then reboot and connect one of the 5000s and upgrade the firmware on it. 2. Check that it works with 2.0 beta. 3. Close PowerSDR, unplug the 5000 and plug in the other one. 4. Upgrade the firmware on it like before 5. Run PowerSDR 2.0 again or, don't upgrade the second one and it should work with the old version. Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
This brings up the same question about Flex-1500. My use of 1500's IF radio for microwave transverters, so ideally I would like to connect and use more then one simultaneously. Can i connect and use more then one 1500 at a time? (desire is to receive and visualize bands simultaneously) I realize that ultimately from a USB bandwidth perspective i will need to have enough capability to support more than one at a time, so this question is more about software I suppose. thanks! I think I know what you are asking. You only need to upgrade the PowerSDR software once - as that is the front end. It does not affect your Flex hardware. Now to upgrade firmware you will connect one Flex at a time and perform the upgrade. Once you have done one, disconnect, plug in the other and upgrade firmware. Even if there are some hiccups I have no doubt that things will move in the right direction. Here's the scoop -- please read this entire description to understand the situation: The base driver was written to accommodate as many FLEX-1500s as you can plug into the computer at the same time so we did a lot of the work up front. We have tried *controlling* two radios at the same time and have had no trouble doing this. One thing we found out about the kernel version of the driver is that it needs to seize/not seize a radio immediately when the radio is connected. What we want is to present the user a list of radios or some selection mechanism for each PowerSDR instance so that you can start two instances of PowerSDR on the same computer and connect each to whichever radio you want. In order to accomplish this, we need to build an intermediate layer between the driver and the application that is a 1-to-many aggregator *and* the UI components to support presenting a selection (or whatever other method). We are pressed to get everyone's radio in their hands ASAP so the initial release will not support running in this mode. We have three microwavers on staff and I know some of you have seen my rover. This is top-of-mind for me so I am motivated to fix this if it is possible without a tremendous investment of time. Feel free to drop me an email and see how this project is progressing. Having said this, I do not know what limitations will appear as a result in bottlenecks in the PC USB architecture. It could be that the computer will only support a single radio per USB Hub (internal in your computer). We *think* you may be able to support 2 per hub at a minimum, but we have not tried this and it could easily be an o nooo moment. So to summarize, I want this badly and I'm going to make it happen unless it turns out to be a huge mess to implement ;-) Steve ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
Richard, No, he needs separate database files for each radio since the calibration for each specific radio is stored in the database file. If he were to follow the procedure you suggest, the file would only have the calibration data for radio #2, radio #1 may not work properly. Unless, of course, you were suggesting that he repeat that procedure every time he switched radios. The driver will only allow one radio to be on at a time, but he can set things up to use different databases for each radio. This can only be accomplished by a new feature in v2.0 Beta that may not be documented yet. Basically, it involves specifying a command-line parameter in the shortcut used to start PowerSDR to tell PowerSDR what database file to use. I know the feature exists (at least it did in the SVN revisions), but I do not know the correct syntax of the command-line parameter to be used. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Richard Clafton Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 6:58 PM To: 'paim'; FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0 I think I know what you are asking. Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
Steve, WARNING! What you recommend is NOT recommended. The calibration data for the radio is stored in the database. If you do as you suggest, the calibration would be correct for one radio but not the other. You need 2 separate databases, one for each radio. You will be able to specify the database to be used in PowerSDR v2.0. See the FlexEdge reflector for further information. In PowerSDR v1.18.6, this can be accomplished by creating a new database.xml file with radio #1 renaming it to database1.xml (or something like that). Then restarting PowerSDR with radio #2 turned on create another new database.xml file. Rename this file to database2.xml (or something). Then copy the correct version of the file to database.xml before starting PowerSDR. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Stephen Hicks, N5AC Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 9:24 PM To: paim; rfno...@gmail.com Cc: FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0 OK several questions in this thread. First of all the 2-radio question: PowerSDR is loaded on the computer, not the radio. The only software that is loaded into the radio, itself, is the firmware. As Tim said, you cannot run two 5000s on a single computer at the same time, but you can connect one, load PowerSDR and then load the updated firmware in the radio. The you can disconnect that radio, plug in the second and only load the firmware into the second radio. At this point you could run either radio on that computer. You may, of course, load PowerSDR on another computer if you want to run the radios at the same time. * * * * * For Joe's question (K6SAT): We have very carefully considered the use of the FLEX-1500 as a microwave IF. So to summarize, I want this badly and I'm going to make it happen unless it turns out to be a huge mess to implement ;-) Steve On Thu, May 27, 2010 at 18:08, paim paimg0...@btinternet.com wrote: well do i need to load the v2.0 on 1 computer ?when i do update it will do it to each of the 5000 .so if i connect 1 5000 to my computer it will load the new version 2.0 . then when i connect the 2ND one [i know one at the time not two at the same time we all know this ] it will load the 2ND 5000 auto-the new version in to the 5000??? Actually he can run multiple radios from one database. This can only be accomplished by a new feature in v2.0 Beta that may not be documented yet. Basically, it involves specifying a command-line parameter in the shortcut used to start PowerSDR to tell PowerSDR what database file to use. Re: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0
I suppose another way you could run multiple radios is to have multiple users: As it stores the pertinent information within your profile in the following folder - for example mine: C:\Users\rclafton\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 You could have radio1 and radio2 users Which would store the database.xml and other relevant files in their own appdata folders like so. C:\Users\radio1\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 C:\Users\radio2\AppData\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.19.3 That way you can maintain unique information such as TX Profiles per radio. Or the easy way (having just found the article I saw a few days ago!) http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50469.aspx I shall assume you can have both radio's plugged in (with 2 fire wire ports available) and powered up - but you have to select the Master in the flex driver to determine which one you will be taking control of? That's a step I cannot confirm as I don't have two flexes (yet!). --- Richard A Clafton, W5\G7EIX 'the brITish guy' - rclaf...@riroc.com RIROC - Hosting - Development - Technology - www.riroc.com -Original Message- From: Richard Clafton [mailto:rclaf...@riroc.com] Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2010 11:10 PM To: rclaf...@riroc.com; 'Tim (W4TME)'; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: RE: [Flexradio] what if i have two flex how this will work v2.0 Out of curiosityI had another look... Did you turn it off by the AC switch on the power supply. If not, the supply is still active if it is a computer supply. The standby power is always available if the AC switch is on. I had a computer switcher that went bad and started generating noise even when the computer was off. I finally located the problem by disconnecting the AC power cable which was easier then reaching around the back of the computer to turn the AC switch off. 73, Bill NJ1H On 5/5/2010 6:27 AM, Mark Lunday wrote: Noise floor seems lower, good point I do have a new switching supply nearby, but it is powered off. Follow what Tim says, try it into a dummy to see if it changes value. It could be coming from the computer powersupply (not all supplies are created equal, look for a class B certification) , maybe the video monitor or some other device connected to the computer, might even be another computer (I have one that has a noisy ATA disk controller) lots of places to look. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ Mark Lunday wrote: F3K 1.18.5 Win7 Latest driver Turned off radio for 48 hours, back on and I have spurs on 17 meters and up through 6 meters. Re: [Flexradio] what is cpdr do ?
Larry, The compander in PowerSDR COMPRESSES signal peaks and EXPANDS signal minimums. The compander in PowerSDR is applied only to the transmit audio signal. It does not affect the receive signal. The compander in your MacIntosh amp is the same animal except that they provide separate control for the compression expansion levels while PowerSDR has only one control which adjusts both. The article you referenced is a little confusing. When it was talking about compressing audio before the A-D converter (transmit) and expanding it after the D-A converter (receive), it was referring to a specific application in the recording industry where you have a closed system. That is, you have control over both the recording (transmit) process and the playback (receive) process, such as in a digital audio recorder used in a sound recording studio. Using this technique, you can achieve a nearly distortion-free method of increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. Obviously, in radio communications, we only have control of one end of the process, either the transmit signal processing or the receive signal processing, but not both (unless you only work stations using Flex radios, too). By-the-way, I used to be the studio facilities engineering manager for RCA Records way back in the analog recording days. We had compressors back then, but expander circuits were a little more tricky. They relied on positive feedback were prone to oscillation. What you can do with DSP these days is nothing short of amazing. 73, Ray, K9DUR http://k9dur.info ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

What can be recommended as a quality, RF immune 2.1 speaker set? (Oh, I do use my Marantz stereo system on occasion to make things sound real special.) Hi Joe I use Bose Companion 3 Series-II speakers with my Flex-5000A and really like them! One thing to keep in mind is that you will probably want to feed both the audio-out from your computer and the audio-out from your Flex to the same powered speakers. I use a Y-adaptor to combine the two inputs before connecting them to the Bose speakers. One bonus with the Companion 3 is that you have a very nice separate AF control / mute button / headphone jack in a small desktop module. 73 Sheldon VE1GPY CONFIDENTIALITY: The information contained in this email (including any attachments) may contain confidential, proprietary and/or privileged information. Re: [Flexradio] What amplified speakers are good- with sub?
Yeah, but unfortunately you still have the same ground loop dilemma with that configuration too. It is still best to electrically isolate the second source. You do not want stray currents flowing through the speakers, especially if they are high frequency (RF). -Tim -Original Message- From: gafenw...@att.net [mailto:gafenw...@att.net] Sent: Monday, April 05, 2010 11:20 AM To: Tim Ellison; Sheldon Hartling; 'Dr. J Roth'; 'Flex Radio' Subject: Re: [Flexradio] What amplified speakers are good- with sub? I just picked up a pair of Cyber Acoustics CA2992 amplified speakers at Fry's for $19.95. These are 8W/chan 2-way speakers with two inputs. They sound great on the F3K and are loud enough to fill the classroom when I am giving a demonstration and want all the kids to be able to hear. *MUCH* better than the built-in amp in the K2 we were using. I use the second input to plug in our 2M rig when we are using that. No EMI that I have been able to discern. For $20 I don't think you are likely to beat them. -- 73 de Brian, WB6RQN/J79BPL ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] What amplified speakers are good- with sub?
This thread is basically useless. Different speakers for different folks. Here is a REALLY good suggestion. Make sure you can take them back if you do not like em. I originally bought the Bose Companion speakers which Flex recommended and some here seem to like. Like most Bose speakers they were terrible . No highs, no lows, yep gotta be Bose. Got my money back and got M-audio AV-30 from Best Buy. These are really sweet on my Flex 5000. These are under $100 and put the Bose Companions to shame. Remember, buy from a place you can get your money back if you do not like em. I've gone to the Bose Companion II Speakers for our show demo systems. They produce PLENTY of quality sound even in the face of a packed booth! Been very happy with them so far regarding reliability and ruggedness. 73, Greg - K5GJ On Sun, Apr 4, 2010 at 6:52 AM, Jim pywac...@fuse.net wrote: Drax, I use the Bose Companion II Speakers. Drax, I purchased AV40s. But, I stopped using them with my Flex 5000a. What sounds better to me is the GAP Hear It Inline Module (the best NR unit - made in the UK by BHI and sold in the USA by GAP) along with a cheap $10 Jetstream JTSP10 external speaker. http://www.gapantenna.com/hearit_inline.htm Howard Subject: [Flexradio] What amplified speakers are good?
