This is a really good book for getting experience in using DITA 1.2. I found
that the sample application that is developed was very straightforward to
implement in FrameMaker. It won't teach you everything you need to know about
DITA, but all the basics are there.

An Arbortext specific version of this book also exists. (The one above is not
FM specific, but it really doesn't need to be.)

DITA/docbook vs your own schema

2013-07-09 Thread Craig Ede
This distinction between a narrative and topics is a good one.

I just worked through a series of manuals that were written as narratives.
There was a lot of repeated content and procedures that were actually four or
five procedures mixed together and then occurring later with the mixture
slightly varied at other points in the manual.

For the content of these operator manuals, the focus on topics both reduced the
need for repetition and allowed breaking things down procedures into units were
both stand-alone AND understandable. The links to stand-alone topics allowed
redefining confusing procedures by allowing the operator to focus on the big
picture.

For this particular situation, DITA was a logical choice.

BTW: The previous approach had created a maintenance nightmare since changing
anything resulted in having to find all the other places where the same or
similar text had to change as well. The conversion process uncovered numerous
places where such changes had been not been done or was done incompletely.

Craig

snipped-

IMHO, Docbook vs DITA is a choice between ecosystems. While Docbook is leaning
towards the narrative, and DITA towards topics, the differences are getting
less pronounced. E.g., DITA is slowly leaving DTDs behind, and Docbook is
slowly getting assemblies (maps).

DITA/docbook vs your own schema

2013-07-08 Thread Craig Ede
Okay, I'll start from the assumption that DITA or Docbook as standards are
the way to go if you don't want to spend all kinds of time and money on
development. Of course changing to DITA or Docbook will cost time and money,
too. Just less of both.

So which: DITA or Docbook

DITA is much more restrictive. The topics are formed from a very finite set
of elements which your crew can learn to use adroitly with a little study
and practice. Docbook has everything plus the kitchen sink thrown in as
elements because it is meant to do, well, just about everything. For my
money DITA makes a lot more sense, but your writers have to understand the
conceptual framework and work within that relative simplicity. Don't imagine
that you can do things like four levels of nested lists. Docbook, by
contrast, let's you do just about anything you've been doing in unstructured
FrameMaker, you just have to learn which of the many many elements lets you
go ahead and do that.

For my money, DITA is the way to go .

DITA/docbook instead of developing your own schema?

The content maps reasonably well to DITA, but not perfectly. I'm trying to
figure out whether we're better off working within the limitations of DITA,
or whether we should take the DIY approach. A clear list of what you save by
using DITA would be really helpful.

Many thanks!

To do them all at once, just say Replace All. This will replace all
throughout a book with the right settings chosen. Also, if you don't have a
book, you can build a temporary one that includes all your files. You
probably one to test with will a one-by-one replace to make sure you are
getting what you want. Remember that case differences might cause a problem.

If you have a lot of terms to convert, this could take a while. So you might

You could try printing the file to the Acrobat printer instance as an image

OCR. OneNote does that automatically when you add a file to a notebook.

Changed Section and Subsection Numbers

2013-06-29 Thread Craig Ede
I'm not sure exactly in what sense you are using "book update", but that
ambiguity brings forth a couple more observations that may help with this
problem:

Updating the Numbering Properties within the book (usually done by selecting
one or more files in the book, right-clicking and choosing Numbering
Properties which opens the Numbering properties dialog box).

The templates I set up have the numbering properties set at the book level
so that users don't have to mess with this. However, if the books can't be
predefined, a good description of what to check for in these settings should
be part of the template documentation.

Updating the book to produce the correct numbering of pages, etc. This used
to be Generate/Update. (In the open book files, select the book file at the
top of the list of components and choose File>Update book):

This will update the numbering according to the current book settings.
REMEMBER: If you have files open, they will have to be saved to preserve the
numbering. A "best practice" is to do this will all the component files
closed as this ensures that they are opened and then saved in the updated
state.

Remember also that printing a book results in an update occurring (again
without saving if the files are open).

Harvey,

I had a similar problem on a ~10 chapter book. One or two of the chapters
would never get the formatting right even though each template was the same
and each chapter had the Format - Document - Numbering (and Page) set
properly. It was only when I would do Book Updates that the formatting and
page sequencing would be properly "forced".

It may be as simple as going into the Paragraph tab in the numbering for
that section and changing that to "Continue numbering from Previous file"
(don't recall the selection exactly).

The numbering is a delicate interaction between a number of settings.
Usually putting your content into the containers provided by the template
(and removing overrides from any of the numbered paragraph tags) will fix
problems. (Of course, that assumes you have a good template.)

It is NOT usually a good idea to start trying this and that setting while
hoping for the best.

Has anyone figured out an automated way to fix this problem? My experiments

I've just verified that this is true in both FrameMaker 10 and 11.

RECAP: Create a new color and choose Don't Print as its Print As setting.
Apply the color to text and print the page. The text using the Don't Print
color shouldn't appear in the printout but it does.

I've just created a bug report on the Adobe website but thought I'd post this

Well, you could move the special colour from Normal to Invisible, either in

There are times when quite specific Distiller job options are required by
clients who may be providing the resulting PDF to service bureaus, etc. This
makes printing from .ps files more desirable than simple direct printing to
PDF.

Craig

-Original Message-

I strongly suggest that you reconsider your workflow instead. First, there
is no reason to print to file in order to create a PDF. If you're using a
very old version of FM or are still superstitious about using Save As PDF,
simply select Adobe PDF as your printer and leave Print to File turned off.
You'll be prompted to choose a file name and location, and your PDF will be
created directly by the same process as if you'd printed to a PostScript
file and then distilled it.

RE: Unavailable font in BOOK file (not in book's files)

2013-05-23 Thread Craig Ede
The crash on SaveAs mif is a bad sign. Yes, you should be able to saveAs MIF
and that should clean the file of information like this that is a holdover
from the previous state(s) of the book. The crash is indicative of some sort
of corruption.

The book file will store font information used in the files within it and
can maintain this information after fonts have been removed from these
files. That is cleaned up when it is saved as MIF and then opening and
saving the MIF as a fm book file. So it is probably a good idea to rebuild
the book.

Remember Missing Font Names is specific to the FrameMaker installation and
can be toggled off and on as needed. I usually leave it activated, for
obvious reasons. Since no fonts are actually used in a book file since
there is no text that will be printed from that container itself, it can't
have any effect on the printed output, but it will result in an entry in the
console window. That can be ignored.

RE: pod for displaying and sorting lists of markers, xrefs etc.

2013-05-22 Thread Craig Ede
I don't really see the UI name collision you describe. The pods for xrefs,
markers, etc. are clearly a different form of access to these various
objects. It's not like calling up the pod doesn't clearly show something
different that calling up the older object editing windows. The older access
window is jumped to when you click on Edit in the pod, but the pod clearly
adds new capabilities beyond creation and editing of the objects.

Given the amount of pod bashing that occurs on this list, it might be time
for everyone to take another look at the pods that offer new functionality
and flexibility of handling. It's not just about having the ability to
rearrange the input windows.

I suggest that Maxwell Hoffmann take a good look at this controversy and do
a webinar on these pods. (Not that they haven't been there for some time,
but a fresh look wouldn't hurt.)

different that calling up the older object editing windows.

Well, yes, that was the problem. Two UI objects have the same name but one
is a subset of the other. Why would I expect that? Why does the default
workspace show some of the crappy ones instead of all of the more capable
ones? Why don't the limited ones have buttons that expand them into the more
capable ones?

I think I sent you a link long ago to a video by Adobe about using of the new

Wow. The same command on two different menus brings up different UIs
for the same feature? I guess I'll have to try all of the entries on
the Pods menu to see what else I've missed.

Does that mean the old UI for applying conditional text is still
around somewhere? I found that much more efficient.

You can sort through markers, click on them to go to the destination, and
view unresolved cross-references quickly. You can see external
cross-references and know where they link. This was in FM10 as well, but
people were saying they don't want to upgrade from FM8.

Adobe's track record isn't that bad: activation for Frame 9 is still

FW: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

2013-05-11 Thread Craig Ede
This is troubling, and so one message is buy the CS software on CD/DVD
while you still can. A number of my friends, most connected with academic
institutions, are doing that.

I expect Adobe is attempting to have everyone on the same page as regards
these applications so that one set of help files defines the current state
of an application. This would help a lot in terms of expected outcomes when
using the product. However, it requires a constant state of reeducation as
new features are added and different ways of handling things are introduced.
Not that we don't have to deal with this already, but at least we know if we
do something in a given version, it is going to work in a way that we
already are familiar with.

As for extending this the current version of the app beyond the bounds of
the Creative Suite, I rather doubt that Adobe will do that anytime soon. If
they have their finger on the pulse of their users they must realized that,
for instance, in the medical device industry, all tools used to produce
documentation must be validated. It would be impossible (and expensive!) to
validate a moving target as the apps were continually being improved and the
former version made unavailable.

I have just heard a rumor that the CS Suite is going to available in future
only on an SaaS basis, by subscription. TCS/FrameMaker could follow?

I do wonder whether the accountants that run large corporates like Adobe
understand how important their software is to the countless thousands of
freelances who have to scrape every last penny to buy it - but at least then
they own something, not vapor that goes phut as soon as you stop paying for
it.

For the last two decades FrameMaker, Illustrator, Acrobat and Dreamweaver
have been the rocks underpinning what I do. I'm far less sure about the
future, though.

FW: FM10 help broken?

2013-05-11 Thread Craig Ede
As a fallback option to online help, it's probably a good idea to download
the help file as a PDF (it makes a great user manual, btw). Since the PDF
has the revision date in the footer you can update your version if a new
revision is released. Such a search should be easy in the PDF.

FW: OT: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

2013-05-11 Thread Craig Ede
Your point about ownership is well taken. However, having a disk does mean
that you have access to a given software package you can count on (and not
some changing version of it). Also, given that license, they cannot revoke
your ability of use the software in that state, and they have certain
obligations to make sure you are able to do that (i.e. they can't simply
turn of your license at their end on a whim). Obviously, they can turn off
support at some point.

Or maybe I am wrong about their responsibilities. I'd love to hear more info
on this topic.

FW: OT: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

2013-05-11 Thread Craig Ede
Actually, the right subscription model might appeal to many companies. It
can be cost effective for the company (a known monthly, smallish outflow of
cash), but is certainly harder on the user/contractor since they will be
more acutely aware of the fact that they are having to constantly
incorporate new functionality into their way of working (and excising old,
tried-and-true methods). It's difficult to juggle all that for the
contractor, but a company just sees the software as a single tool useful to
its goals that has a predictable cost.

If Adobe were to offer the software free to contractors who then end up
working for companies who are required to buy the software, that could
benefit us all. Oxygen has a license for academic users (relatively cheap)
that precludes them from using an academic copy to produce commercial work.
If they end up doing commercial work, they are required to buy the normal
license. This model allows them explore the product freely.

The vast majority of my work in the Adobe Technical Communication Suite is
related to the academic sphere. Yet when I work on-site for a business
client, their license is the one used for these commercial projects. This
allows me to keep on top of the product features and yet have (at least
through TCS 3) inexpensive access to the tools so that I am able to explore
the features of the tools. The abandonment of the academic license with TCS
4 was a loss in this regard.

RE: Font information changed

2013-05-09 Thread Craig Ede
It's probably because Illustrator is, on startup, activating its own set of
fonts (having tucked them away somewhere), and deactivates them upon quitting.

I finally solved my problems in FrameMaker with error messages about Helvetica,
Times and ZapfDingbats by finding those fonts in an old copy of Illustrator.
After doing an install of that old Illustrator (truncated to install just the
fonts), I had to move the fonts into my main font directory to have access to
them with FrameMaker. It seems to me that (if my memory serves, which, more and
more it does not) FrameMaker tucks fonts away somewhere , too, for its own use,
so you may want to move those into the main font location as well to have
access to them in other programs.

FW: Corporate madness - Adobe software to be subscription only

2013-05-09 Thread Craig Ede
This is troubling, and so one message is "buy the CS software on CD/DVD
while you still can." A number of my friends, most connected with academic
institutions, are doing that.

I expect Adobe is attempting to have everyone on the same page as regards
these applications so that one set of help files defines the "current state"
of an application.

As for extending this "the current version of the app" beyond the bounds of
the Creative Suite, I rather doubt that Adobe will do that anytime soon. If
they have their finger on the pulse of their users they must realized that,
for instance, in the medical device industry, all tools used to produce
documentation must be validated. It would be impossible (and expensive!) to
validate a moving target as the apps were continually being improved and the
former version made unavailable.

As a fallback option to online help, it's probably a good idea to download
the help file as a PDF (it makes a great user manual, btw). Since the PDF
has the revision date in the footer you can update your version if a new
revision is released. Such a search should be easy in the PDF.

Hi Robert

I don't know which version of FrameMaker you are using, but Fm 11 has Smart
Paste:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/new-in-framemaker11-xml-authoring-features/framemaker-11-smart-paste-unstruct-content-into-xml/

If you are using DITA-FMx, you need to install this structapps stub first:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dita-fmx-users/files/

I've just tested this with some content which I copied from our Confluence wiki
and the results are not perfect but pretty good:

* The DITA topic is valid right away (no cleanup of the structure
required).
* Subheadings in a wiki topic become section titles in a (generic) DITA
topic.
* A ul/li in the wiki topic is still a ul/li in the DITA topic.
* Numbered steps in the wiki topic become ul/li in the DITA topic
*   Typographic elements (b, i, ...) are OK too

Graphics didn't work, but that's obvious. Tables were converted to tables, but
the heading row was gone.

Also, I used a generic DITA topic. Copying a task description from a wiki and
pasting the numbered steps into a task topic doesn't work, because the
structure a task topic has a very specific structure. I guess this could be
fixed with a topic-to-task-topic transformation, using a Framescript or using
FrameSLT).

Even if you don't write DITA-structured content, I think you could still use
DITA as an intermediate step:

1. Create a new generic DITA topic
2. Copy the body section if your wiki.
3. Put your cursor in the body element of the DITA topic and choose Edit
Smart Paste.
4. Choose Special Remove Structure from Flow to create an unstructured
Fm file.
5. With Framescript or the Paragraph Tools plugin, you can then remap the
paragraph formats, for example change all [title.1] formats to Heading2.

Cheers

FW: Variables based on paragraph tags at the book level?

2013-04-30 Thread Craig Ede
The thing to do is to start with a template that contains all these things so
that when you create each file in the book, all these things exist in the place
your want them.

With already created content (say, files created in a old template that lacks
these things), you would create a new template and then import the new template
into the files.

Actually, if you can do it, it can be best to cut paste content from the old
template to the new as it eliminates extras that just happen to exist in the
file, but aren't part of your template. (Note: Defined variables in the
template will replace the ones in the old file, but undefined variables that
exist in the original document will be added to the new file.)

Or, is the only way to set up those kinds of book-wide variables to
define our own variables in one file and import them to all the other
  files in the book?

FW: Variables based on paragraph tags at the book level?

2013-04-29 Thread Craig Ede
The thing to do is to start with a template that contains all these things so
that when you create each file in the book, all these things exist in the place
your want them.

With already created content (say, files created in a old template that lacks
these things), you would create a new template and then import the new template
into the files.

Actually, if you can do it, it can be best to cut & paste content from the old
template to the new as it eliminates "extras" that just happen to exist in the
file, but aren't part of your template. (Note: Defined variables in the
template will replace the ones in the old file, but undefined variables that
exist in the original document will be added to the new file.)

RE: mass update of system variable

2013-04-22 Thread Craig Ede
If I remember, you have to File Import File with MIF snippets. That
means you have to import it one file at a time, doesn't it? (Unlike File
Import Formats across a book). This is because you are actually importing
the content into each file (even though it is invisible in a sense).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

If the MIF snippet or some other approach works, you could do all files at
once by creating a scratch book, using Windows' search to find all your .fm
files, and dragging and dropping the found files into the book. Then, in
FrameMaker, select all the files in the book and import the snippet.

structured frame xml: controlling cell shading

2013-04-15 Thread Craig Ede
I'm interested in controlling cell shading in structured xml documents. The
following entry in the DEVELOPING STRUCTURED APPLICATIONS WITH

ADOBER FRAMEMAKERR 9 gives me pause:

Tables

FrameMaker table formats are only partially integrated with the structure
model. The content of

a FrameMaker table is always fully structured, but the control over cell
border ruling is limited and

there is no structure format control over cell shading.

Does this mean that there is no way to import xml information to dictate
cell shading? I'm interested in both options: controlling regular shading
patterns (like every third row), and specifying cell shading on an ad-hoc
cell-by-cell basis. I believe the regular patterns of shading can be done by
using a table format defined in the structured template. Is this true? And
is ad hoc cell shading impossible?

BTW: The FM 9 document is the most current I can find. I am working in both
FM10 and FM11.

Thank you.

Craig

I'm sending this to both the framers and the framemaker-dita lists, but the
question is really broader than strict DITA restrictions.

RE: More Font Warnings

2013-04-15 Thread Craig Ede
You are talking about the Fonts Pod (brought up with ViewPodsFonts). As
far as I know you can only see fonts defined for some use in the document
there. You can use the Replace button in the Fonts Pod to perform
substitutions to get rid of the fonts you don't want.

It is possible, I think, that an unused paragraph or other object definition
can specify a font you don't have, but using the Replace button to perform a
substitution should permanently change that. The existence of objects
defined to use a specific font, but with no instance of that object in the
document, would explain situations where you choose a font to replace and
then, after hitting the Replace button in the Fonts Pod, you don't get a
list of any places where the substitution will be made. (Choose a font you
know you have in the document and you will see what I mean about the listing
of occurrences.)

Lastly, sometimes a font is hidden on a left master page in a document that
was two sided and was then made one-sided later. This hides the left master
page from view. Changing the document to double-sided and deleting all
content from the left master page gets rid of this. You can then save the
document as single sided without having this problem font problem cropping
up.

I have also seen empty text boxes buried behind a text flow that cause this
problem. (Somebody had to work hard to get them there.) The Replace function
in the Fonts Pod would leave the text box in place, but prevent the font
error. A better way to track these text boxes down is to use the Apply
Master pages and then note which pages show overrides. Those are the pages
where such extras will be hidden. The incantation is FormatPage
LayoutApply Master Pages.

The last gasp method is to saveAs Mif and search for whatever font name is
popping up in the console window. This should give you a good idea of where
it is hidden.

Sometimes it is easier to just turn off Remember Missing Font Names and
have it remap the font to something you have. (Turn it back on though, when
you are finished.) You can also affect which font mapping occurs in the
maker.ini file.

Example:

Zapfdingbats, *,*= Adobe Pi Std,*,*

Trouble selecting multiple graphics

2013-04-09 Thread Craig Ede
You can select multiple graphic objects within an anchored frame, but you
cannot select multiple anchored frames. You can also select multiple graphic
objects that happen to be just floating around on a page, although the only
place you might want to have such graphics is on a master page.

It sounds like you need to be thinking of selecting the frame before
inserting your graphics (after the first one, that is) so that you can get
all your graphics in one frame to begin with.

Hope that helps.

Establish an instance of your book number variable somewhere in each
particular file and create a second cross-reference to that. It can be

When you insert your xref(s) it would be in two parts.
See x, starting on page Y of book number ;Z

RE: global master page changes: Timestamp

2013-03-27 Thread Craig Ede
I'm coming from a medical device background, where revisions of documents are
quite different than modifications (hundreds, perhaps, between revisions, even
if the revision releases are only one month apart). It nice to know when a
document was released and not just when it was last touched.

Accordingly, we use user variables for the revision and change it from Rev A
to Rev A+ after an official release and then finally to Rev B when that is
released. Such user variables are also used for a release date like March
2013. We would never want such a variable to update one either open, update
(which also updates system variables, unless I'm mistaken) or close.

We use system variables to capture modification date/time for every file
editing session (since the documents are checked in and out of a repository).
With those variables in the footer on every page of a document (along with the
filename variable), we know exactly what version of a document we are looking
at when we see a printout or PDF of any of these files. We like the auto-update
quality of a variable in this situation. [We print all this in tiny, tiny type
in the footer.]

variables imported via MIF fragment WAS: global master page changes

Perhaps the most elegant way to use the variables method is to save the
definitions as a MIF fragment and eliminate any chance of mucking anything
else in your files.

I refer to Using MIF Fragments to Update Catalog Settings on p. 581 of my

Putting variables in cross references

2013-03-26 Thread Craig Ede
Establish an instance of your book number variable somewhere in each
particular file and create a second cross-reference to that. It can be
hidden somewhere by making it white on the white page if you don't want to
see it.
When you insert your xref(s) it would be in two parts.
"See , starting on page Y of book number ";"Z"
first xref targets your para, second xref targets your instance of the book
variable regardless of where it is in the file.

Subject: Putting variables in cross references

Hi, guys...I have an FM11 book that is composed of two document books, with
each book having multiple volumes, them each volume multiple chapters.

I have a variable defined for "Book 1" and "Book 2", and will soon have
"Book 3" and "Book 4" (as we expand the book to more Lines of Business) and
I have the appropriate variable copied to all files in the applicable book.

I want to create a cross-reference format that goes something like "See ,
starting on page Y of book number Z" where X is the heading and Y is the
book number variable..

What I can't figure out is to include a variable in a cross reference. What
am I missing?

Thanks
John Posada

global master page changes: Timestamp

2013-03-26 Thread Craig Ede
I'm coming from a medical device background, where revisions of documents are
quite different than modifications (hundreds, perhaps, between revisions, even
if the revision releases are only one month apart). It nice to know when a
document was released and not just when it was last touched.

Accordingly, we use user variables for the revision and change it from "Rev A"
to "Rev A+" after an official release and then finally to "Rev B" when that is
released. Such user variables are also used for a release date like "March

I'd do it via a variable placed on the master page. Just import variables
from a clean template (i.e. one that won't redefine other possibly used
variables) across the range of files that need to be updated.

variables imported via MIF fragment WAS: global master page changes

2013-03-25 Thread Craig Ede
I agree that the MIF fragment import is the most elegant (and was my
preferred method previously), but I had no success with import from MIF
fragment working with FM11. I haven't tried it with FM10. Can someone else
confirm that this no longer works with FM11?

Perhaps the most elegant way to use the variables method is to save the
definitions as a MIF fragment and eliminate any chance of mucking anything
else in your files.

I refer to "Using MIF Fragments to Update Catalog Settings" on p. 581 of my
book whenever I need to do this.

RE: why is FM's UI so weird and buggy?

The kind of UI thing that bugs me is this: You have two documents tiled on the
screen. You are in the left side document with your cursor in a paragraph that
you want to retag. You slide your mouse over to the docked paragraph catalog
(which is open on the right side of the screen) and click on a paragraph tag to
apply it. Instead of applying it in the left hand document, you new tag is
applied in the right hand document. Maddening!

Reappearing Change Bars

2013-03-01 Thread Craig Ede

It is possible that one of your users has added changebars manually (as an
override). In that case you will have to remove them by applying the default
font for the paragraph to the text in question.

BTW: I have seen this happen when users are not aware of the automatic nature
of change bars and they want to make sure it happens.

Sooo... just popped $400 to upgrade to FM11, solely for the line
numbering. However, we're working on a set of engineering specs that
contains many huge tables, and Frame isn't numbering any lines in the
 tables.

Is this just the way it works? Or am I missing some setting that would
add line numbers corresponding to text in tables? This is a killer issue
for this project, and it Frame can't do it we'll have to resort back to
our previous method of putting hard-coded line numbers on the master
pages -- which client doesn't like because then every page has the same
 numbers.

RE: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-02-21 Thread Craig Ede

While this may not meet your needs, you can affect all (or just the selected)
files in a book by choosing View Zoom and choosing In, Out, 100%, Fit Page in
Window (plus a couple of others). I find this useful since my monitor happens
to fit the page to a full size window at 84%. The fact that this affects
multiple files more than makes up, to me, for the loss of the ability to
designate exactly which size to zoom to. If I need some particularly gargantuan
size factor for a given file, I just type it into that percentage box you
complain about.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I just noticed that I cannot set
custom zoom levels in FM 11. Why was the functionality of the old dialog box
(or whatever it was called) removed? And no, I don't mean typing into the
percentage/drop-down box--you know, the one that doesn't even look like an
entry field until it is rolled over or clicked in. If I had to type the size
every time I needed to change zoom level, I'd have the slowest workflow on the
planet.

Seriously, are users expected to modify an .ini file just to set zoom-level
settings? (I understand from Shmuel's tip on Rocky Mountain Training's blog
that it's maker.ini line 95.) Most technical writers/editors are not
programmers and are neither comfortable nor familiar with modifying application
files this way. Seems dangerous for workgroups. Isn't that what user interfaces
are for?

Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-02-21 Thread Craig Ede

While this may not meet your needs, you can affect all (or just the selected)
files in a book by choosing View > Zoom and choosing In, Out, 100%, Fit Page in
Window (plus a couple of others).

I suppose you could set the space above for your paragraph tag to something
that would push the text to the bottom of the text frame. Framemaker ignores
this setting for the first para on a page, so you'd have to pair your
special paratag with another tag above it. Also, this would only work for a
single line as the text would go to the next page if it wrapped. But you
could design a sequence of blank tags with various spacing setting to go
above to allow 2, 3 or more lines. Too much work really.

Best to just put your text in an invisible cell that fills the frame and set
the text to align with the bottom of the cell.

RE: FM 7 and CS6 Illustrator art

Yeah, but wouldn't it be a happy thing if we could back save files with the
new features still there. I don't know how the hell one could program that,
though, since the old file structure would have no way to anticipate any new
features (whatever they might be!). Layers (subject to flattening if there
were no layers before) would be just one of these things.

FM crashes while Save Ditamap As PDF , Save Ditamap As Composite document

2013-02-06 Thread Craig Ede

I continue to have problems with hard crashes of FM11 involving the conditions
described below:
Framemaker 11 is crashing when I open a ditamap on the network and attempt to
SaveDitamapAs PDF or SaveAsPDF. This happens whether I am saving the PDF to the
network drive, the desktop or to the myDocuments folder on my C drive . It also
crashes if I try to save the ditamap as a composite FM document to any of these
locations. Opening a single .dita file and doing a SaveAs PDF does not If I do
the same actions with the same collection of DITA files stored on my local
drive, the process is successful. Unfortunately, we have to work with our files
on the network. Additional information: I can successfully print a PDF of one
of the component dita files using FilePrint from that network location. But if
I try to FileSaveAs PDF with the View Generated PDF in Acrobat option
checked. the process appears to proceed normally but concludes with a message
saying There was an error opening this document. The file cannot be found.
Distiller reports Empty Job. No PDF file produced. In these cases FM does not
crash. My IT guys don't find anything unusual with the permission settings of
the network location the DITA files are stored at, but clearly something is
upsetting Framemaker. All other functions to the network location work normally.
I've sent many of the log files produced by these crashes to fmer...@adobe.com
Thanks for any insights.

We're still using FM 7 (obviously) and one of our vendors is planning on
upgrading to CS6. Will they need to back save to a previous version? I
vaguely recall hearing about art import issues, but maybe that was with
 earlier versions of FM. Thanks!

Just to add to what the others have posted, I circumvent .ai and save from
Illustrator as editable PDF and it gives me no problems. It's in fact an
advantage, as diagrams can be viewed in Reader. But yes, FrameMaker 7 can
import .ai files - at least those from CS2, which is what I have here. Or at
least he Mac version can: I don't know about Windows FrameMaker. I have v 10,
but as yet no machine to run it on.
