[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema call for submissions open till November 1

2020-10-14 Thread bryan konefsky
Hi all, just a last reminder that our call for submissions will be open
through November 1. This year Experiments in Cinema will be online again
(for obvious reasons) and will run May 1-22, 2021. Please find our
submission form at www.experimentsincinema.org. Note that last year - for
the first time - we initiated screening fees into our budget AND we plan to
continue paying screening fees this year and into future festivals.
all the best,

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema v15.1 online!

2020-06-23 Thread bryan konefsky
Hi all - thanks everyone for watching our first-ever online festival. We
had a record number of views from 50+ countries! And, although the event
ended yesterday, you can still make donations to ensure that EIC continues
for years to come. Additionally, note that in addition to other merchandise
(available on our website, www.experimentsincinema.org) our
brand-spanking-new fundraising collection is now available with more than
60 films from Experiments in Cinema.
Stay safe everyone,
Team EIC

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema

2020-06-13 Thread Bernard Roddy
Paul Tarragó showed a film shot in Super 8. It was also black and white.
And I would add that it seemed to me to maximize the look of large
grain as well. Various dimensions of the film sought to identify it
with this past now receding so quickly, the format and grain and all.

All of this was interesting because I have seen his work and
think of him as a very proficient digital artist. Tarragó said
in the Zoom discussion that he made three films last year, which
announces a prolific practice. I will remember him for how prepared

he was to make whatever compromises seemed necessary to submit work,

and to consider the different possible venues that might be most

appropriate for a given work. I think of Tarragó as basically doing little

else but make films, and of never really facing any crisis about that.

Discussion placed emphasison considerations that a young practitioner
might want to be thinking about. Elena Duque said she also had a film
shot in Super 8 that she was ready to digitize. This was on the prompt
from Bryan to speak about any new projects they are up to. I was imagining

the artist who could not say what was next. But Wenhua Shi was able to
answer by talking about teaching and about the progress his colleagues are
making in preparing to hold the RPM Film Festival in Boston.

Soetkin Verstegen's film involved a focus on the action of moving

a large chunk of ice. I found this very satisfying to watch.
Wenhua Shi's film also gave prominence to the human form,

only this time of a slim Asian woman who has a beautiful arm.
There is a dwelling on the particulars of human locomotion in these
films that one might recognize in early cinema.

I also liked Magorzata Bosek-Serafinska's film. This was the
piece in which a lot of wrappers and tickets were manipulated on a
plane surface for their visual interest. It is, to an extent, a
continuous process, but it was also a narrative about someone who

smokes. A Marlboro pack provides a kind of design basis for one
segment of the work, and a Winston pack for another. The work
identified five or six months, arranging the film in segments that
were so named, and the film included brief lines in text suggesting
the progression of the smoker's life, health, or care.

Nothing of Bergson could be remotely relevant for any of this. The work

was for me a particularly dramatic shift away from any interest in narrative.

I was thinking today that narrative might have more to do with computing.

But I also thought it was interesting to think about who was able or

interested in taking part in the Zoom. There is a very palpable interest

in internationalizing the festival, a mark of academic funding (though I hope

this doesn't appear to be a critique). The work selected might also begin

to acquire certain internationalizable qualities (as we might expect, for

example, when very different cultures are exchanging a product a great deal

and there isn't necessarily the means to become particularly familiar with

the low-level activities of people who live and breathe there: a
McDonaldization,

for lack of a better word).

Re: [Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema

2020-06-12 Thread Dominic Angerame
There are a lot of filmmakers that deserve to be discussed. Museums constantly
show the same artists over and over, ad infinitum the same goes for our field
of experimental cinema. I will be looking for some new work to show in Cuba
this year, that is, if the virus allows. At the showcase in Havana I have
presented more than 1500 films. Many consist of unknown filmmakers, as well as
the classics(?). Many in the audience Cuba has no idea who is “famous"(?) or
not, all the work is enjoyed.

I commend Bryan for having the balls to program a great volume of work. All of
it deserves the right or a projector beam or stream. We, as viewers, can
determined the value of the work. Bryan has also allowed the views to post
comments as the work is streamed.

Thanks Bryan, I am still viewing the work for possibilities.

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema

2020-06-12 Thread Bernard Roddy
I watched the first program of this year's film festival, Experiments in
Cinema. Director Bryan Konefsky introduces the festival and after the works
holds a Zoom discussion with three of the artists (Tarragó, Shi, and
Duque). Here's the order of the works in "Experiment 1," the first program:

Paul Tarragó (UK)
Soetkin Verstegen (Belgium)
Wenhua Shi (China/US)
Elena Duque (Spain)
Helen Anna Flanagan (Ukraine)
Magorzata Bosek-Serafinska (Poland)
Steven Woloshen (Canada)

All films were completed in 2019. There are a lot of things we could be
talking about other than Dorsky or some museum piece.

Our call for submissions is open from August 1 – November 1, 2019 so don’t
wait! See www.experimentsincinema.org for our online submissions form.

For additional information contact festival director Bryan Konefsky at
experimentsincin...@gmail.com or print

traffic controller Nicole Hoch at experimentsincinemasubmissi...@gmail.com

We are seeking new and old moving image art that will engage audiences with
the magic and wonder that IS undependent cinema! Submissions might be (but
are not limited to) essay films, dance films, film poems, structural films,
post-structural films, post-post structural films, underground films,
abstract films, experimental narratives, experimental documentaries, video
installations, transgressive films, portrait films, political rant films…
Challenge us and make us happy (if your creative output requires fancy
press packages, agents to be contacted, high rental fees, a world premiere,
descriptions like “…think The Little Mermaid on steroids…,” or character
development that can only be understood in terms of a traditional narrative
arc, you might do well to find a different festival to screen your film).

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema fundraising DVD collection now available!

2018-06-27 Thread bryan konefsky
Hi everyone - it was a challenging year for Basement Films to produce what
turned out to be an amazing edition of our Experiments in Cinema
international film festival. To this end we FINALLY mastered our annual
fundraising DVD collection which is an 8 disc set available at
www.experimentsincinema.org (click on Shop EIC). We have the collections
available at individual and institutional prices. Additionally there are
still T shirts and tote bags available from our most recent (v13.6)
edition. Know that our festival is produced by an all volunteer staff so
all proceeds from the purchase of our fundraising DVD collection go right
back to helping us produce our annual event.

Thanks everyone for your support. Also, if you go to our website and click
on "About" then click on "donate" you can make tax deductable donations to
our non-profit!

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema fundraising DVDs and yearbooks available for your bookshelves!

2016-08-04 Thread bryan konefsky
Hi everyone - In addition to having our call for submissions now open at
http://www.experimentsincinema.org/#!submissions/c1xio, I'd like to remind
you that because our festival is run by a 100% volunteer crew, we do depend
on "the kindness of strangers" to make it happen every year. To this end
one of the ways that we raise funds to support the costs of producing
Experiments in Cinema is by selling merchandise which can be found at
http://www.experimentsincinema.org/#!shop--cart/c1op5. In particular I'd
like to highlight the two yearbooks we have published (Undependently Yours:
Imagining a World Beyond the Red Carpet, Experiments in She-ness: Women and
Undependent Cinema) and our fundraising DVD collections (the DVD
collections go back to our 4th edition when we began producing the discs).
I'd like to thank all the artists and writers who have contributed their
work to the texts and DVDs as it is a clear and generous expression of
their support of our efforts. If any of you might teach, perhaps you would
be interested in asking your institutions library if they might be willing
to purchase our books/DVDs. We have already placed our materials at
universities such as Emerson, Pacific University, U of Cincinatti,
Northwestern, UT San Antonio, Sarah Lawrence, Bennington and in Europe at
Image Movement in Berlin.

Thanks for your support!

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema NEW fundraising DVD collection now available!

2014-06-10 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hello all - at the risk of sounding redundant, I wanted to re-post (for
those of you who might not read this listserve all that much) our
announcement that Basement Films has just published our NEW fundraising DVD
collection for Experiments in Cinema v9.72. Of course we also have DVD
collections that date back to our v4.2 festival and all this stuff is
available at our website - www.experimentsincinema.com

Thanks for supporting us by purchasing these DVD collections - the money we
raise from these sales ensures that our entry fees ALWAYS stay very low for
domestic artists and ALWAYS free to international artists!

Basement Films is, and always was a 100% volunteer run organization - we
are proud to share our passion for the Alternative Screen (Youngblood).

Basement Films and our annual Experiments in Cinema festival is deeply
invested in creating community (perhaps a micro-community).

We will leave it up to others to support ambition and art-star-dom... Yuk!

Have a great summer everyone!

Your e-mail mentioned help with travel arrangement. what kind of help can you
provide?

Thank you. I am looking forward to being there.

Dear Bryan,

Since I'm teaching full time, I have not yet been able to complete the film
I was hoping to send to the festival this year, so I'm sending an older
work that utilizes a similar technique (botanicollage and "live action"
footage melded together) and has never been screened for the public. I
would love to be able to show it to EIC's dedicated, discerning audience.
I hope that is OK with you. The other piece might be ready by the time
the festival happens, but it isn't ready now.

2013-05-12 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hello Frameworkers - please know that our 7 disc (wow - 7 discs!)
fundraising DVD collection from Experiments in Cinema v8.53 is now
available at our website along with T shirts and tote bags.

See www.experimentsincinema.com for ordering information and a list of
artists' works on the collection.

Additionally, we still have plenty of fundraising DVD collections available
from our previous festivals ready and waiting to be shipped!

We are always way-thankful to all the artists who donate their works to
these fundraising DVD collections as Basement Films (sponsor of Experiments
in Cinema) is a 100% volunteer run micro-cinema, so all proceeds go
directly to ensuring that the next version of Experiments in Cinema WILL
happen.

Our next call for submissions will be up on our website in early August
(FYI).

Last, if anyone is interested in receiving a copy of our program from EIC
v8.53 please send me your mailing address and I will ship one out to ya!

I was at the festival last weekend for the screening of my film "Victor #5" and
will reiterate everyone's opinion! Great programming, cool venue and
projectionist, great crowds, warm organizers and volunteers. I felt very
welcome there. Met a lot of cool people, some I got to know better than others
but that is life.

If you get the chance, I'd encourage anyone to try to attend this festival.

2013-04-23 Thread Caryn Cline
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments, Bernie. I couldn't agree more,
but, then, I did a little of the programming. I just wanted to add that
the "Collaborating with Nature" program on Sunday (which I co-curated with
Julie Perini), which was so enthusiastically received, was a challenging
program to project. We had two films that ran on 16mm at 18fps. Several
other films on 16mm that needed to be built into a reel. One loop that
opened the show. A handmade film that had to be projected on a slot load
set up on the floor of the theater. And in the middle, a switch to
digital. The fantastic, patient, persistent Keif Henley, owner and
projectionist at the Guild in Albuquerque, was instrumental. We couldn't
have mounted such a difficult program without him and his superb cinema and
machines. Bryan and Michelle and the whole EIC crew are absolutely
incredible.

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema now accepting submissions

2012-09-14 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hi all - Basement Films' annual Experiments in Cinema is
now accepting submissions through December 15... But don't
delay! Be the first on your block to enter your film to
this Albuquerque-based, international film festival... See
www.experimentsincinema.com for more details.

Note that we have no restrictions on the length of your
works or the date it was completed... Submissions are $15
per entry and if you submit three or more works the entry
fee is only $10 each (cheap as per Alfred E Newman)...
Also international submissions and festival alumni never
pay submission fees!!

We hope to hear from all of you soon.

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema v7.9 fundraising DVDs for sale!!

2012-04-27 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hi all - we just posted our brand-spanking new 4 DVD
collectoin of fundraising discs on our website -
www.experimentsincinema.com - We are really excited about
this collection - and know that Basement Films (the
non-profit that produces Experiments in Cinema) is a 100%
volunteer-run organization so all proceeds from these
fundraising DVD sales goes directly to ensure that our
2013 festival will happen!! The list of artists on the
discs is on the website AND please be honest when
purchasing - in other words if you are purchasing
primarily for institutional use, click on that button when
purchasing - everyone else purchase the discs at the
individual price.

Also, we posted tote bags from v6.3 and v7.9 - they're
pretty cool and locally (Albuquerque) silk screened).

Thanks again to everyone who made Experiments in Cinema
v7.9 the amazing success that it was!

Oh, yes!! I've been there once. Really great festival. Really well
organized. A chance to meet up with great friends and colleagues but also to
meet new people. Organization in the festival is top notch. They have great
screening halls. Really nice intro clips for every program. Great festival
gatherings in great restaurants-bars or at Bryan's beautiful garden. And
yes...great food.

Keep it up over there!!!

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema submission deadline approaching!

2011-11-05 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hi all - I wanted to thank everyone who has already
submitted to our 7th annual Experiments in Cinema festival
- And, remind the rest of you that our postmark deadline
for submissions is December 1. 2011 (see
www.experimentsincinema.com for submission information) -
We've already begun watching submissions and there is some
really great stuff!... and a strong selection of
international submissions as well.

Additionally, I wanted to let people know about a swell
new festival in Portland that is being produced by the
good folks at Grand Detour (one of the founding members of
Grand Detour is Ben Popp, a former member of our very own
Basement Films). Their fest is called Experimental Film
Festival Portland (www.effportland.com) and I would
strongly encourage EVERYONE to submit their work.

implement the late submission fee that we had originally
decided on... So, from now till Dec. 1 our submission fees
remain the same - $15 for domestic submissions and $10 per
submission for 3 or more entries - Additionally,
international submissions remain free and artists whose
work we have screened in the past DO NOT pay submission
fees.

[Frameworks] Experiments in Cinema v7.9 seeking submissions

2011-09-07 Thread Bryan Konefsky
Hey ya'll - we've seen a wonderfully encouraging flood of
submissions in the short month that our call has been
out... This note is to remind domestic artists that our
"early bird" deadline (lower submission fee) ends October
1 - So, please-please don't delay... However, do know that
we will accept submissions through December 1, 2011 - the
fee between Oct 1 and Dec 1 is slightly higher, but not
outrageously.

see www.experiments in cinema.com for submission info.
