I have -current as of 19-Nov-99 and Netscape works fine (well as well at it
ever does..)

Working on this now. I presume I can just build a kernel, since the machine
I am trying to upgrade form -STABLE to CURRENT does this.

Happens here, too. Can someone with a machine to spare try the following:

1. Go back in date a week, and try the kernel. Does Netscape work?
2. Try a day later. Repeat till netscape breaks.
3. Go to the day it was still working. Read commits between the
two times and see what's changed. Could it possibly be the KAME
commit?

1999-10-04 Thread George W. Dinolt

I am running FreeBSD 4.0. I have been seeing the empty core files from
netscape 4.61 and (as of last night) 4.7 for at least a week. I use
fvwm2 and afterstep-devel. The behavior seems to be independant of the
window manager. I rebuilt all my ports (including X and new X aout
files) with the new kernel and world as of Saturday, but this has had
no effect. Mostly this behavior is anoying, although occasionally I
will see a crash when I try to read mail. Things seem a little stabler
with netscape in linux emulation mode, but I haven't kept track
closely enough to tell.

I have two 4.0-CURRENT machines, one with netscape running natively, the

Surprisingly, the one running under linux emu is pretty stable. I have a
few problems with netscape natively with java sites, but since disabling
that it's been "pretty good".

Of course, I still experience one of those random crashes every now and
again.

It's not related to Javascript or at least not these cores ...
Here it crashes also when browsing local files (without Javascript) and it
DOESN'T happen with 3.3-STABLE...

So it has to be a 4.0-CURRENT problem that perhaps worths to be investigate
better...
It is not kind to have the "default" browser crashes so heavily and
couldn't rely on it...

I'd like to know if people using other platforms (like Linux and BSDI)
and/or other wm (I use windowmaker) has the same problem...

Thanks for your time...

I am using Xaccel 5.0.2 with windowmaker 0.61 but my crashes happening also

It is very annoying because when you begin to surf you always open multiple

Thankyou for tip, discovered that my modules are from Sept 17 and I know
I've compiled the kernel several times in between 17 to date. Quick look
at /usr/sup/src-all/checkouts.cvs:. gives me the 26'th. I must have done
cvsup for src-all by accident.
Sorry for false alert, my Netscape works now as usual.

Make sure that the linux module is as uptodate as the kernel is. As a
rule of thumb: rebuild the modules you use when you rebuild the kernel.

Sorry I don't know anything about debugging, so I did some

useful information. Useful from my point of view ;-) Hope it's really
useful. Otherwise please give exact guidelines or I can try limit memory

excellent, using kgbd, can you please type "up" until you hit
frame 5 and print the value of the ndp and some of the other
variables? A listing of the code at that location would also
be great. ('list')

Repeatable panic in current, cause Netscape

Hello

The latest -current system crashes while starting up Netscape, mine
version is 4.61, Linux one. It's fully repeatable in my case. I got
crash dump and here's my dmesg and gdb trace:

I must have caught two badly timed cvsups in a row. After doing another cvsup
and recompiling/installing a kernel and modules (which I had done before),
everything is working fine. I usually ignore any glitches after
a fresh "cvsup/make world", except in this case it took me 3 cvsup's
to get a fully-functional system.

I'm still not sure exactly what was out of sync here, but after
examing the crash dump with full symbols, it really looked like something
wasn't in sync (i386/trap.c:syscall() had some very odd values it was trying
to use).

I know how to debug kernels, I just haven't had to do so for such a long
time, so I wasn't prepared :-) And doing it this time, just reminds
me how lacking gdb is in some respects compared to other kernel debugging
tools I've used in the past in some areas. In other areas it is much
better.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

If you use the linux module, make sure it's in sync with the kernel. If
that doesn't help, either follow Matt's advice or use ktrace/truss.

Compile your kernel with debugging. In the kernel configuration file
in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/YOURCONFIGFILE, add:

makeoptions DEBUG="-g"

Then config the kernel and rebuild.

When you make install, the non-debug version will be installed and the
debug version will be sitting in the compile directory as 'kernel.debug'.

Then reboot, then cause the crash again and get another core (be sure
to clear out space from /var/crash if necessary).

Now bring the system up again, and use this for your gdb:

cd /var/crash
gdb -k /usr/src/sys/compile/YOURCONFIGNAME/kernel.debug vmcore.XX

And do the 'back' again to get the stack backtrace. You should see a
whole lot more information.

-current panic w/linux netscape

1999-09-26 Thread Mike Pritchard

I finally saw my first -current panic in more than 5 months (not a bad
track record).

I have a panic that I can duplicate with a 24 hour old "make world"
and a 4 hour old -current kernel. If I run the linux netscape (installed
from ports less than a week ago), the kernel panics in copystr().
Minimal gdb output follows. I'll have to generate a kernel with
debug info for more information.

The linux netscape worked fine with my old kernel from 9/16.
I'm willing to try and track this down, but I hope someone
will pop up and have an idea what is wrong.

Just because CURRENT is the platform you use when you encounter a
problem, doesn't mean that the freebsd-current mailing list is the right
place to discuss it.

I'd suggest the freebsd-ports, assuming good old freebsd-questions isn't
good enough for you. :-)

FreeBSD-current and Netscape Java

1999-07-24 Thread Bill Pechter

Are there any tricks to getting Java in Netscape running with
FreeBSD --current.

I've suddenly noticed it's not working (tried 4.08 and 4.6 with
Fortify 1.4.4 applied and it's no-go even with the classpath
set correctly...)

I've applied Bruce Evans's patch to egcs to work around (yet another)
problem with our crappy antique a.out gas. After rebuilding egcs, and
rebuilding the a.out XFree86 libraries, netscape works again. I was having
the same problem as you until then.

Netscape dumps core after XFree86 build

1999-04-12 Thread Kevin G. Eliuk

Hello,

On Apr10 I rebuilt the XFree86 Port with aout compatibility libraries
running current of Apr04. Immediately following Netscape Communicator
would dump core with a bus error.

I'm not sure if this is relevant or not, but when it dumps core the core
file name is truncated.

ca...@vanessa$ netscape
Bus error
ca...@vanessa$ ll *.core
-rw--- 1 cagey cagey - 1425408 Apr 11 23:46
navigator-4.5.bi.core

and log output gives

pid 322 (navigator-4.5.bi), uid 1000: exited on signal 10

I installed linux-netscape-4.08 and it opens with bus error or signal 10.

I have rebuilt world early today, built flawlessy, but have not built XFree
as of yet.

Could I expect any difference from a rebuilt XFree?

I could supply requested data from ktrace or gdb though it should be
easy to duplicate the same.

They went away after I nuked all prior traces of Navigator, including

I've had an unstable Netscape ever since upgrading to 3.x. There was
quite a bit of discussion about this around a month ago, but no firm
conclusion was reached. For me, it happens with MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS
turned on (ie. no separate DNS lookup processes) *and* I access a site
where the corresponding name servers take a long time to answer.

I found some more discussion about Netscape hanging in a Linux related
Web page, and the author has also produced a (Linux specific) patch. I
include the README file below. Sorry, no URL, but it's real easy to
find the package (search for Netscape-pipepatch) with ftpsearch.

Steinar Haug, Nethelp consulting, sth...@nethelp.no
--
The Netscape pipe overflow workaround
=====

There is a known problem with most versions of Netscape currently
in use, where the Netscape freezes when loading specific pages.
The lockup is complete - there is no window refreshing and
no reaction to the kill -TERM. The only way out is to kill
the process with SIGKILL or from the window manager and
to manually remove the lock file.

The problem is timing-dependent - while most people seeing
it can reproduce it using specific pages, these pages are
different for different people.

The cause of this problem is quite simple. On most (if
not all Unixes) there is a limit on the pipe size and
writing to a pipe will block, if the pipe is full. This
limit is 4096 bytes on the Linux. The Netscape uses a pipe
for some internal synchronisation and fails to take this
into an account. When the pipe overflows, the Netscape
locks up trying to write into the pipe and nobody
reading it.

The presented workaround is a side-effect of narrowing down
this problem (the goal was to prove, if this is a kernel
or application problem). It is NOT intended as a general solution
to the problem (Netscape developers must fix it) and there
is NO GUARANTEE that it doesn't break something else. However,
the hack helped quite a lot of people and so I decided
to publish it.

The idea behind this hack is to insert a layer between Netscape
and the libc, which catches the problematic pipe and fakes I/O
operations that would otherwise cause the lock-up.

Installation

First you must know what version of Netscape you are
using - the keywords here are libc5 and glibc (aka libc6).
This is not necessarily the library your distribution
defaults to - it is perfectly possible to use libc5
Netscape on a glibc-based system.

  ldd $MOZILLA_HOME/netscape | grep libc.so

will probably give an idea, but there can be broken installations
of ldd giving questionable results (e.g. libc.so.5 => not found
is a valid answer for a libc5 installation).

Next edit the Makefile and check the LIBC and LIBDL
variables. These should be OK for a glibc Netscape,
you will need to change them for a libc5 one (the
instructions for doing this is in the Makefile).

Compile and install the hack (the default destination
is /usr/local/lib):

  make
  make install

Now the tricky part - you must set the LD_PRELOAD environment
variable to point to your hack somewhere where only Netscape
can see it. Generally you do this in some starting script
for netscape. As the distributions vary here, you are
basically on your own. The patch for Red Hat 5.2
is included (file starting.script.rh52.patch).

End remarks
===

The workaround is (C) 1999 Stanislav Meduna. The use,
modification and distribution is completely free. There
is ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY and i will NOT support the
workaround. There ARE known problems - it is not
known, if they are caused by the hack or only exposed
by using it - I will NOT try to fix them.

Some of the discussion on this hack is included
in the file Discussion.

If you include the workaround in some distribution,
I would like to hear about it.

netscape trouebles

1999-03-06 Thread Alex Le Heux
Hi,

For quite some time now Netscape 4.5 has been very unstable on my
-current system. I've cvsup'ed and made world many times in the hope the
problem would go away.

Today I decided to ktrace it, and see where it would stop.

Of course it now refuses to crash. Even on java stuff that would crash
it _every_ time without the ktrace.

Now I can start my netscape with "ktrace -f /dev/null netscape", and
it'll probably be happy, although this is less than a satisfactory
solution.

I figure that the fact that it runs fine with the ktrace might mean
something significant, although I wouldn't know what. So if anyone has
an idea, I'd be delighted to hear about it.

The system is a Celeron-366, not overclocked, running -current,
XF3.3.3.1 and WindowMaker 0.51.0 and I have plenty of ram (160mb).

Netscape is the only application giving me trouble.

I've tried the FreeBSD version and the Linux version of Netscape, and
they both behave the same. It appears that the Linux version is a bit
less stable than the FreeBSD version.

Am I the only one with this problem?

Can't speak for the original poster, but my Netscrap 4.5 shows the same
behaviour:

[16]a...@darkstar:/alex #>/usr/local/netscape/netscape

Does it truly dump core, or does it merely go away? It's a known problem with
Communicrasher 4.5 on UNIX platforms that trying to use any of the mail stuff
(including mailto links in web pages) without first starting up the mail client
will cause it to generate a Bus Error and and rather abruptly die. (Check the
"Communicator for UNIX News group on the secnews.netscape.com News server.)
The simple workaround is to first open up the mail client thing, *then* try to
use the web browser part.

I finally got everything set up as far as having my vt220 being my

It turns out that as part of my setup I was using MFS for /tmp. When I

MFS mount point. I have not had a hang since then.

So the question is are there known problems with MFS?

Snapshots and Netscape

1999-02-04 Thread Kelly Yancey

Just FYI, I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem or
if it was only with 3.0-19990128-SNAP. I found that if you use
sysinstall to install a snapshot then you can't build Netscape 4..08 or
4.5 (Communicator or standalone). It dies in vreg (also when trying to
start Netscape withoutt having run vreg) looking for ld.so.
I cvsup'ed to 3.0-STABLE as of last night and everything worked.

Install it in $PREFIX/compat and then make a symlink from /compat to
${PREFIX}/compat. This only fails if you then install the SVR4 stuff

You can put it anywhere and symlink to it, like sysinstall does now,
but it has to be called "/compat" (or some other well-known place)
because of the implementation. The string "/compat/linux" has to be
hardcoded in the linux emulator binary. (If we move it to
"/usr/local/compat", people who use LOCALBASE other than "/usr/local"

I know, I tried to change it before until I realized that it's not

I have my /compat symlinked to /usr/compat with no problems. The root

Whats VM_STACK (was Re: Netscape | Mozilla)

On Wed, Jan 27, 1999 at 12:35:09PM -0500, Luke wrote:

Its some new code to manage "autogrow" stacks. The existing (old) code
made a process stack autogrow. But, its useful to be able to create
additional autogrow memory regions to use as thread stacks in threaded
programs. The additional code does this, and uses the same code to
manage the process stack.

Its been around for a month or so, hidden behind the VM_STACK option
(ie. you had to add -DVM_STACK when compiling kernel/world). The idea
was that if it works, the option would be removed and the code made
permanent. For i386 machines, the "option" was made the default about
2 days ago for -current, and was made the default for 3.X today.

You can still pull it out if you have problems, as its still mostly
hidden behind the VM_STACK defines. -DVM_STACK is now just turned
on by default. As soon as it gets more testing on alpha machines,
and if it seems to continue to work elsewhere, and if there's no
great objection, its likely to become permanent.

mmap(2) has some more information (if your sources are very current).

Should not harm anything. I have linked /compat/linux to /home/linux

I have /compat symlinked to another partition. As long as its mounted
before you need anything in /compat you should be fine. At least here,
thats no problem, and I turn on linux in /etc/rc.conf.

Yep, it's alright! I've been doing that for many months. It's installed into /
because it's a "core"ish thing.

In private mail, Brian Feldman has indicated his problem was NOT
the VM_STACK option, but was another configuration problem that
he since fixed.

no room. Do you know if its ok to make /compat a link to somewhere else for the

Just another data point. I just updated my 2xPII/300 system to
4.0-CURRENT last night (Tues Jan 26), and I'm running Netscape 4.5 just
fine - no crashes od any odd behavior at all. VM_STACK is defined, I
have 256Mb RAM, and 256Mb swap (which is currently untouched since the
reboot) striped across 2 disks. A make -j8 buildworld also succeeded
early this morning at about 5am. Softupdates is turned on for all
disks and all partitions except /tmp which is async mfs.

Netscape: FreeBSD/i386 compact demand paged dynamically linked executable
This is 4.5b1 communicator, and locks up X often enough I dont use it.

netscape.bin: unknown pure executable
This is a 3.x version and doesnt lock up X but can't view alot of pages properly
It does crash occasionally , but just coredumps.

I have a 1990429 mozilla built but it was built on 3.0 and doesnt work very
well, I am trying to build a new one.

OK, thanks. Now to see where that places netscape into the whole...

We aren't building a.out ld's ever since e-day (ELF-day), so the problem
had to be present before that time. Comments?

Netscape | Mozilla

1999-01-27 Thread Jeroen Ruigrok/Asmodai
OK,

just to re-organise something here:

Some people are referring to Netscape (Navigator | Communicator)
whereas others are referring to Mozilla (from www.mozilla.org)

I think this makes a ton of differences.

Also, anyone even bothered to file the communicator 4.5 binary?

[r...@daemon] (27) # file /usr/local/netscape-4.5/communicator-4.5.bin
/usr/local/netscape-4.5/communicator-4.5.bin: FreeBSD/i386 compact demand
paged dynamically linked executable

Matt or others might want to slap me for being way off but afaik the VM
stuff was tied with the swapping and not paging. So this would mean that
the VM_STACK cannot be the problem.

Might the old communicator still being tied to a.out?

Questions and no real answers =\

Netscape 4.08 here, never had VM_STACK being used before most recent kernel.
I booted with a new kernel to find out netscape sig11d on start-up. Then I
booted /kernel.old and Netscape worked fine. So I booted a brand-new kernel
without VM_STACK and Netscape runs. Go figure? :) The old kernel had not
VM_STACK. Anyhoo, I'm making world in hopes of getting rid of that damned ps
error.

If you have Netscape problems, it would be worthwhile to try removing
-DVM_STACK from src/sys/compile/BLAH/Makefile and doing a make clean all

You haven't had to provide an ISP-grade news or proxy service yet, have
you? :-)

Ignoring that comment, since I assume you meant "I haven't seen an
end-user application in...", it _is_ conceivable that the way Netscape
keeps track of its cache _does_ mean an inevitable requirement for
enormous amounts of memory.

I still don't think we're getting any closer to the question "Why is
Netscape unstable on CURRENT when it worked fine for me on STABLE?" The
problem seems to be that those who know enough to offer a useful answer
don't seem to be seeing the instability reported.

So if this thread isn't going to be dropped, the focus should probably
be shifted to "What information should we request from people who have
this problem?"

I've had the problem recently and in the past where the system locks up
completely and a lot of the time the speaker starts a continuous beep.
Locks up solid, requires a power-cycle.

It's not a new problem, it used to happen a lot on my dual processor box
and I've had it happen a few time this week on my single processor dev
box. The hardware is very different on both boxes and compared to yours
so the cause must be somewhere fairly generic.

I *think* Netscape was in use every time but I can't see how netscape
itself can be directly responsible for a system lockup, it must be
tickling some interrupt problem.

Paul.

look in lint for more hints.

when the machine locks:
send a break:
if on vt220: F5
using tip/cu:~%

take a look at 'ps' and copy it down to see what's up.

you may also want to enable crash dumps, look in rc.conf and set
your 'dumpdevice' to your swap partition. then you can type 'panic'
and get a core image of the system to look at.

on the next reboot you can 'kdb' the kernel and then type 'bt' to
get a backtrace.

i have a vt320 for vanity purposes :), but i suggest you use a
serial line into an xterm on another box if you can, ddb isn't the
nicest interface and being able to cut and paste in and out of ddb
in an xterm is nice.

1999-01-25 Thread Reginald S. Perry
I have been having these X lockups with the linux netscape 4.5
running. I may have exacerbated it when I installed the linux
realplayer and macromedia flash plugins.

I would like to have a methodology to help debug this, but I have just
this one system to use as the debug system. I do also have a vt220
which I could set up if that would help.

The key here is that for me it locks the system up completely. I
cannot telnet in remotely and the ctrl-alt-esc key sequence does not
work so its unclear to me how to debug this. Tell me what I would need
to help debug it, and I will try to be of some help. Ill attach my
dmesg output.

This would indicate that it might have to do then with prolonged exposure
to memory and the memory-system(s) (swap, paging). Is there anyway to
monitor the syscalls and the amount of memory used and released by each
call Matt? Hope ye see where I'm getting at...

Yer kidding right? A program that _needs_ 100 MB or more? Surely yer
kidding... I haven't seen a program in normal corporate/home use that
justifies the memory usage of 100 MB or more including NetScape's
Navigator/Communicator.

I wonder if X could be the originator of the problems, my guess is it can't
since Linux uses the same X and I haven't heard any complaints from that
corner.

Also it's nice that the program dumps core, but afaik without debug symbols
it's not much use.

My setup is about the same. I just modified all my login.conf
defaults to be unlimited/infinity. Still the same crappy core dumps.

Just to clarify:

1) I'm not sure I would necesarily accuse Netscape of having a leak:
what with caching pages in RAM and the allocation policy of whatever
malloc they use, maybe it really needs this much and would stabilise
at some size of 100M+ - I just don't have the swap space to find out.

2) I have never seen a system crash as such. However, having the X server
killed due to out-of-swap leaves the console fouled up and so could
easily be mis-described as a crash.

Since I upgraded to CURRENT, with its login.conf which defaults to
unlimited resources, my frequent netscape core dumps have gone away.

One variable may be available memory. On my system, with default datasize
limit of 16M from login.conf, Netscape coredumps very frequently. With
datasize unlimited, Netscape eats all the available swap (this system is
64M real 128M swap) and kills the system that way. I currently run

Re: 4.0-Current, netscape halts system

1999-01-25 Thread Forrest Aldrich
I've a feeling that somewhere there is a memory
problem. Netscape-specific perhaps, but I suspect
otherwise due to what I've seen.

For example: the one machine that I have which
will constantly dump core when Netscape is run
is an HP Vectra. I've tried 3.0, 2.2.8, all current
patches, etc. Core dump. Yet when I loaded Linux,
it worked without incident.

I have not yet tried Linux emulation, but will give
it a shot.

I suspected that perhaps the netscape binary needed
to be recompiled against a current system. Why?
System calls are updated, etc. There might be
something really funky going on. The fact that it's
stripped of debugging symbols doesn't help much --
but perhaps someone more adept at debugging might
take a moment to look into it.

I think is odd that the bug doesn't happen with the linux version

On my system, running the FreeBSD 4.0[678] or 4.5 version, the setting
of MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS makes a noticeable difference.

With MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS turned off, Netscape uses normal name lookup
inside the netscape process itself. In 2.2.[78] this worked fine, in
3.0 I get frequent hangs if the name lookups take "too long". I can
avoid the hangs if I make sure that the name to IP address is in my
local name server cache (for instance by doing a manual nslookup or
similar on the name). This is of course rather cumbersome.

With MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS turned on, Netscape starts a separate (huge,
resource consuming) asynchronous DNS lookup daemon. But I don't get
the hangs.

I was thinking of doing that, since FreeBSD can run BSDi,SCO, Linux etc

If you are having a problem with Netscape for FreeBSD, then just try the

Re: 4.0-Current, netscape halts system

1999-01-24 Thread Baby Jane Hudson
I've given up on Netscape. On some FreeBSD-based machines
I have, it just core dumps... on others it works. Nobody
seems to know (or care) why, so I would suggest following
the development of Gzilla and Amaya.

Of course, it would be immensely helpful if we knew what
mysterious person within netscape provided the port to
begin with (Hey, now there's a great idea) so we might ask
some questions. But, that's what you get for free...

4.0-Current, netscape halts system

1999-01-24 Thread Luke
I built 4.0 and after getting over the libcrypt thing it worked ok.
But now every copy of netscape I have [5, all freebsd]
freezes the system, waiting, switching to ttyv* dont help. and it doesnt dump
core or syslog anything. Im not exactly sure what info would be helpful.
Anyways other than netscape it works great
