Re: [Freevo-users] How should Freevo 2.0 look like?
Apologies, I can't design either! However, you could steal some ideas from Hulu or Boxee. Boxee has a pretty interface, if not terribly usable, and Hulu has an easy interface, if not terribly pretty. Ease of installation is paramount - if it isn't easy, people won't use it, they'll instead try to install the a convoluted, sql based program called MythTV which has a much larger following. I suppose if you were familiar with it, it would be a good idea. I might suggest putting a howto on the wiki for those who give up on lirc. I'll try to get to it if I can. Things have picked up this week so it might be next week. Cpufreq-set doesn't seem to work on my pentium 4. Are you over clocking your processer? Not overclocking. Not all CPUs are scalable. It depends on the CPU and the Linux driver for it. Try the following: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies If you get nothing or just one frequency, it probably won't scale. Sometimes there is a setting in the BIOS to enable it, but again it may just not be capable. My main, server/freevo box has an AMD Athlon x2 and it can scale. The freevo box in my bedroom is a P4 generation Celeron and it cannot scale. I don't scale mine above the max frequency it is capable of. Really, the who purpose of not running it "full speed" all the time is that probably 70-90% of the day, it is sitting more or less idle. I scale it down to 1 Ghz (from 3 Ghz) to save on power and make it easier to keep cool. A couple more tips: 1. Flashaid. The results were noticeably better. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-aid/ I might have to check into that. I don't really have a desktop per se on that pc, nor do I have firefox (I launch things in Chrome, if needed) but I might try it out. Overall though, with the processor running at full speed, and hardware acceleration turned off, Flash generally seems to work fine. 2. Volume I like the sound up all the way when I launch hulu. Turn up the sound on the remote or with alsamixer, run '/sbin/alsactl -f asound.state store' to save the settings, then add a' /sbin/alsactl -f /home/freevo/asound.state restore' to your hulu startup script. I'll add this to the wiki too, when I cease to find any further tweaks. (Which, granted, may be the present) Another good trick. Hulu generally is more or less the same as most of my video files I play through Freevo, so I haven't had much volume issues. I pretty much keep my alsamixer volumes at around 85 and adjust the volume on the TV instead. On a side rant, I have to applaud Hulu for giving me a good legal way to use their site, and especially for doing so on Linux. No longer need to resort to rtmpdump. Agreed. There seems to be rumors that they may drop support since they have Hulu+ for set top boxes (Hulu Desktop came out first), but so far it has kept working. I haven't seen an update in quite a while though, so that might indicate something. Re: [Freevo-users] Any one using hulu on freevo?
Great price, I have to admit. I suppose if you were familiar with it, it would be a good idea. I might suggest putting a howto on the wiki for those who give up on lirc. Cpufreq-set doesn't seem to work on my pentium 4. Are you over clocking your processer? A couple more tips: 1. Flashaid. The results were noticeably better. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-aid/ Run the wizard, and it creates a bash script that removes flash, installs the beta flash plugin, and sets some some stuff in /etc/adobe/mms.cfg. You have then reset your .huludesktop as flash_location = /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so, but after that, it definitely works better. Alternately, you could just edit this script it produced: #!/bin/bash sudo rm -f /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so cd /home/dan/.mozilla/firefox/ge2hn4w7.default/extensions/flash...@lovinglinux.megabyet.net/chrome/content/tmp rm -f *flash* wget http://updates.webgapps.org/flashplayer32 tar xvf *flash* libflashplayer.so sudo chown root:root libflashplayer.so sudo chmod 0644 libflashplayer.so sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ rm -f *flash* sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so TWEAK=$(cat /etc/adobe/mms.cfg | grep 'OverrideGPUValidation') if test -z ${TWEAK};then echo 'OverrideGPUValidation=true' | sudo tee -a /etc/adobe/mms.cfg fi cat /etc/adobe/mms.cfg | sed '/EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1/d' | sudo tee /etc/adobe/mms.cfg 2. (Which, granted, may be the present) On a side rant, I have to applaud Hulu for giving me a good legal way to use their site, and especially for doing so on Linux. No longer need to resort to rtmpdump. On 08/12/2011 11:04 AM, Preston Hagar wrote: On Thu, Aug 11, 2011 at 8:00 PM, Dan Schmidt helpdesk...@gmail.com wrote: You did what instead of figuring out lirc? Most of the special keys like play, pause, fast forward, etc. are hard coded to be the keyboard shortcuts for Windows Media Center. WMC and Xine share a lot of short cuts, but not all of them. For the ones that weren't the same, I just got the keycode the remote sends and remapped it to the shortcut key Xine/Freevo expects. It vary likely isn't easier, but I had never used LIRC before and have used keyboards and key mapping before. Although I am sure LIRC is nice to use, after spending a decent amount of time getting Freevo setup how I wanted it (right resolution, using nfs mounted dirs for TVs in other rooms, etc.) I got tired and just hacked up the remote with stuff I already knew and understood. It isn't something I would recommend, although if anyone has a similar remote or wants to get one, I am glad to share how I set it up if it would help out. I actually just have a Logitech Harmony emulate the cheap $7 remote and use the USB/IR that came with the remote now. Preston -- FREE DOWNLOAD - uberSVN with Social Coding for Subversion. You did what instead of figuring out lirc? That seems harder than using lirc. Sure, I'll update the page after I play with it for a week. I installed unclutter and changed my script as such to fix the mouse showing up at inopportune times: /usr/bin/xrandr -s 640x480 /usr/bin/unclutter -visible -root -idle 1 -jitter 3 /usr/bin/huludesktop killall unclutter /usr/bin/xrandr -s 800x600 Strange that you had to mess with xset. Finding the mythtv documentation, I got lirc working by adding the '-r' as follows: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Hulu_Desktop_Integration#LIRC_Configuration Followed, of course, by a service lirc restart. When I get a day off (eventually), I'll try to add a couple of my own. Those are some great ideas to add in. I'll let you add them since you are probably more familiar with them then I am. I run Freevo and Hulu at 1366x768, which is I'm sure the reason it gets choppy if I don't scale up the CPU.I also use this USB IR receiver: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-USB-Remote-Control-Mouse/dp/B001M56DI0 with a Logitech Harmony 300 programmed to emulate it. It more or less just works like a keyboard, so I just had to remap a few keys to make it work. Instead of figuring out lirc, I just setup a fix controller script that I have on my home screen of Freevo that executes the following: #!/bin/bash xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 162 = u' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 153 = f' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 144 = r' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 176 = m' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 174 = n' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 160 = F3' xmodmap -display :0 -e 'keycode 164 = Escape' xset -display :0 -dpms xset -display :0 s off The last two turn off any screen savers since I was having the screen go out and not wake back up. It probably isn't the most elegant way to do it, but I just have a big Initialize menu option at the start of Freevo and just have to run it if there is a reboot. I tried putting it in as a startup script, but it seems to only work once Freevo is loaded, probably because it needs the display to be loaded and ready for the xmodmaps. Anyway, thanks for the input, glad you liked the HowTo. Preston -- Get a FREE DOWNLOAD! and learn more about uberSVN rich system, user administration capabilities and model configuration. I think it may just be a buffering problem, as the videos seem to play fine in VLC. Sometimes, the video in VLC freezes for a second. Thus I will have to return to Xine for audio playing which is fine except I have never been able to get Freevo to broadcast audio stream metadata (song tite, artist) from Icecast/shoutcast stations using Xine, however with Mplayer it works fine. Has anyone had success with this? Paul: What kind of skipping and stuttering are you having playing CDs in mplayer? I have a problem where the buffer runs out while playing, although not until after track 3 or 4 on any given disc. It's not a stutter so much as a gap in playback about 5 seconds long while the drive gets sorted out and starts reading data again. Setting a bigger cache helps a little, setting the CD speed to around 8x (-cdda speed=8) clears it up, but this seems odd to me, since should anything better than realtime be able to fill the buffer? It seems to be that my CD-ROM reads out enough data to fill the buffer, then while waiting to read more, it spins down. By the time it gets the next read command, it can't spin up fast enough and find where to read from before the buffer empties and the music stops. I thought it was a problem with the CD-ROM so I tried playing in Xine and like you, I found there are no problems. Very odd. Still stranger, I know it didn't always do this. I was able to play back CDs with the drive ticking over at 2x, with the read light blinking almost steadily. Now it seems to read a strip to fill the buffer, then wait for the buffer to get down to 15% before attempting to read more. I believe I've tried to lower the cache or even remove it, but that just ends in disaster all around. Anyone have an ideas, especially some setting I may have made with hdparm that I didn't think mattered but it turns out made a big difference? Oh yes, this happens in Freevo and on the command line, so it's definitely something to do with MPlayer, or some other external widget. Thanks guys. James -- Beautiful is writing same markup. Re: [Freevo-users] Recommendation for USB TV tuner for use in USA
My two cents would be to definitely look for something well supported. Buy something that isn't, and you may find you've wasted your money. I bought a used PVR 350 and have been reasonably pleased with it. (Long live SD) Even then, I still had a difficult time getting it working with my set top box. On 11/11/2010 07:25 PM, Preston Hagar wrote: I've had Freevo running for some time now on an Ubuntu Hardy machine. I have been using it mainly for playing ripped videos, with a little use for music and photos. I have, so far, had the TV plugin disabled. I would like to start using the TV plugin and recording OTA digital TV signals here in the US. I get really good reception with a lot of channels, so I know that shouldn't be a problem. I need a TV tuner. I would really prefer a USB one, so that if I get it and don't have the time or energy to get it or Freevo configured correctly, I can just connect it to my Windows 7 laptop and let Windows Media Center do the work. Ideally, I would like it to be as inexpensive as possible (single tuner is fine), but I am willing to pay a little more for something that just works. I have tried searching high and low and can't find any clear answers as to a TV tuner that will work reliably with Linux. The Freevo hardware page: http://doc.freevo.org/Hardware seems to either just list analog cards (which, if I understand things correctly, isn't broadcasted anymore in the US) and DVB cards, which I think is different than what is broadcast in the US. I also looked at the cards here: http://freevo.sourceforge.net/hardware/recommended.php but most are either not digital (or I can't figure out for sure), not USB, or not sold/made anymore. I would be willing to try a PCI based solution, if I could get it cheap (even off ebay or something) for around $25 or less. Otherwise I am hoping to stay in the $50-$60 range if at all possible. I came across the Hauppauge 1200 WinTV HVR-850 HDTV Tuner Stick which I saw a few reports that it might work in Linux, but then I saw others that seem to say that the newest versions don't. I would appreciate anyone's pointers or guidance. Thanks! I have terrible times with Ubuntu, every other time I reboot I have to service lirc restart and then service freevo_xserver restart just to get it to work. That's in addition to a bug that prevented lirc from working right in the first place. Probably should have done Debian. And heaven help you if you use tv.ivtv_xine_tv - xine is always crashing! So using the IRblaster has let you keep your freevo doing your recordings to has it been relegated to DVD, music, video? Evan Yes, using an IRBlaster and the cable company box has allowed me to continue using my Freevo system for recording TV programs. However, this kludge is not 100% reliable. Sometimes, one of the digits is missed (e.g., 189 becomes 18 or 89) and, although recording starts at the correct time, the wrong channel's program is recorded. Other times, it seems LIRC isn't working correctly and no new channel is tuned via the IRBlaster, so the recording starts at the right time, but for the previously tuned (default) channel so, again, the wrong program is recorded. In the latter situation, I have to reboot my system so LIRC can load correctly. I don't know if the problem is with LIRC, the script, the IRBlaster, or the cable box. Probably each of those at some time or another. That's why I was hoping to eliminate all these variables by getting a new card with clear QAM support so the TV card itself can tune to the correct station without dependency on other devices and software. Unfortunately, my cable company's decision to remove most of the channels on their line-up from clear QAM has thwarted my plans. My rough guess is that it's 95%+ reliable, but it's very frustrating when there's a special program I want (worse yet, a program that my wife really wants) and it's the very one that records incorrectly. Life was much simpler before the cable company switched to digital signals and you could have your TV or TV card tune to the correct channel without being forced to use their box. Re: [Freevo-users] commdetectserver
Well, it seems to work sometimes when you set your primary player to Mplayer. It's easy to tell what player you are running - volume doesn't work in xine, for instance. vlc doesn't seem to work at all. It plays the video, but lirc seems broken. Perhaps when I get my freevo box working better, I will have more time to fill out bug reports. (And add to the wiki - promise I'll get to that someday) John Molohan wrote: Hi Dan, Are you trying the play with alternative player while you're in the TV menu? If so I've seen this and it seems to be a bug, it doesn't behave as expected but I haven't got around to looking at it and filing a bug report, maybe you can? If you go into the 'watch a video' menu and access your recorded show through that then the 'play with alternate player' choice you make should work. Re: [Freevo-users] AppleTrailer Plugin
Nothing yet. Everything seems to work fine. I will try to find some time to update the Wiki. Like I said, if the wiki was more up to date, maybe more people would use Freevo. Excellent. Does that break anything else that you've seen? If not and you can test for a while it might be an idea to propose it as a bug fix. It could be as simple as a patch to local_conf.py that suggests people enabling the appletrailers plugin use this if it doesn't make sense to have it as a default. Either way it would certainly be useful to have in the wiki. -- Download Intel#174; Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself. Re: [Freevo-users] AppleTrailer Plugin
Eye candy is good, but I may argue that what Freevo really needs is good documentation. I would gladly spruce up the wiki, but I think my wife will kill me if she catches me working on "that freevo thing" anymore. At the risk of starting a Myth/Freevo debate, what Freevo has over Myth (from what I see and what I'm told) is that it easier to setup, and it's more stable. But, there's Myth documentation everywhere. If Freevo can prove it's quicker/easier to setup than Myth, perhaps we could get more developers to spell the burnt out ones. Your mplayer args idea is good: MPLAYER_ARGS['video'] = "-cache 5000 -user-agent QuickTime/7.5" Can fix appletrailers. (recognizes it as 'video' instead of 'mov', don't know why) Don't use a ' as that can break it. My appologies, Youtube breaking had NOTHING TO DO with the user agent,, but rather bad timing. Ubuntu 9.10 uses an old youtube-dl. Downloading a new one at http://bitbucket.org/rg3/youtube-dl/wiki/ seems to fix it. John Molohan wrote: On 13/03/2010 12:48, Dan Schmidt wrote: Pierre Ossman? What's really needed is a great skin designer more than anything. Henne's new osd for freevo 1.x makes it possible to have a great looking interface which freevo is currently lacking (other media centres have already moved ahead in that area) to build on it's strong underlying core. Having tested xbmc recently I'd be half temped to ask who ever designed their skin/interface if they'd be interested in working on freevo if the community could put up a bounty. [Freevo-users] Ubuntu Lirc Bug / Dish Network how to
In the hope that somebody can Google this information and avoid the frustration I experienced getting lirc working: (I suppose I could also put it on the wiki, unless anybody has some objections) In regards to: http://doc.freevo.org/ExternalTunerConfig#head-a658b45812ae23ccabd4e3f07fafaa8b0c405038 I found this information invaluable, but incomplete. The installation of lirc in Ubuntu 9.10 creates a lirc1 for transmitting to an external box, meaning you will not need to mess around creating an init script. So, you can skip that whole portion of the wiki. d...@dan-desktop:~$ ls /dev/lirc* /dev/lirc0 /dev/lirc1 /dev/lircd /dev/lircd1 Unfortunately, like many things in Ubuntu, they managed to break it. The diff to correct it to work correctly is as follows: d...@dan-desktop:~$ diff lirc /etc/init.d/lirc 83c83 TRANSMITTER_SOCKET=${TRANSMITTER_SOCKET}1 --- TRANSMITTER_SOCKET=${TRANSMITTER_SOCKET} 131c131 TRANSMITTER_SOCKET=/var/run/lirc/lircd --- TRANSMITTER_SOCKET=/var/run/lirc/lircd1 d...@dan-desktop:~$ For those not familiar with diff, that would mean I would edit line 83 to remove the 1, and add that 1 in line 131. This will make lirc1 work correctly. (after a sudo service lirc restart) Freevo's code to create /etc/freevo/lircrc (or where ever) does not seem to work anymore. I took a quick look at the code (which filename I can't even remember now); the first problem is that it fails to strip the from the include directory. However, it's not the only problem, and I didn't have time to further debug it. As a workaround, you can try some copying. For instance, my /etc/lirc/lircd.conf has: include /usr/share/lirc/extras/more_remotes/hauppauge/lircd.conf.hauppauge I think (pretty sure, can't remember) to get around this, I temporarily copied the entire section for Hauppauge_350 into the end of /etc/lirc/lircd.conf so that the script would run to create the freevo lircrc. When it was done, I took it out. Now you can proceed to test if irsend works. I have a dish network 301. Looking at the lircd.conf, I saw this file was: /usr/share/lirc/extras/transmitters/dish/general.conf Which, when you look at, includes the remotes dish, dish1, dish2, ect. dish worked for me, as doing a: /usr/bin/irsend -d /dev/lircd1 SEND_ONCE dish select worked quite well in my test. Putting that in the local_conf, the only argument I had to set was dish: plugin_external_tuner = plugin.activate('tv.irsend_generic', args=('/usr/bin/irsend -d /dev/lircd1 SEND_ONCE dish')) Also might want this: LIRCRC = '/etc/freevo/lircrc' The last thing is to get irsend_generic working for our purposes. Don't mess with irsend_echostar, it is messed up. By now, if you're anything like I was, you're getting discouraged and want the quickest, dirtiest hack to just get freevo working. Said quick and dirty hack is as follows in these parts of /usr/share/pyshared/freevo/tv/plugins/irsend_generic.py. (If you're really lazy, you don't even have to add in my comments) def setChannel(self, chan): chan = str(chan) digits = len(chan) chan_args = '' for i in range(digits): # Dan was here! # Runs too fast. Let's fix that with a pause after each digit. #chan_args += chan[i] + ' ' self.transmitSignal(chan[i]) #self.transmitSignal(chan_args) # All we use lirc for is to change channels. We could try pass # select but, we're lazy and already here. Your box # may require enter instead self.enterkey = select if self.enterkey: # Sometimes you need to send a ENTER or a SELECT # after keying in a code. self.transmitSignal(self.enterkey) The last hack goes on the very last line: def transmitSignal(self, code): sendcmd = '%s %s' % (self.command, code) os.system(sendcmd) # Let's add that pause. It should be passed but, again, lazy. time.sleep(.1) The time.sleep modifies how long it waits in-between digits. I suggest setting this number somewhere in the range of .1 to .5 - trial and error. Restart freevo and lirc should work now. Oh, one last thing. Lirc in Ubuntu is flaky. Half the time, on boot up, I have to do a service lirc restart and service freevo_xserver restart just to get it to work. -- Download Intel#174; Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself. Thank you kindly for your suggestion! Enabling this, and looking at the code, I found that VO_DEV and AO_DEV are NOT optional. If you don't set them, they default to none and it doesn't work.
