Hi,
I think best is quite a large scope term. I, for one, used debian which was
very easy to setup, as already said, so yuu could describe this as best. But,
I'm in the process of rebuilding it using gentoo, because compiling
everything gives more control. So I could define even this as best.

I think all boils down at what you want.

One thing that I don't like about Mandriva or similar distro is that they tend
to install tons of software that, if you're using freevo only, will only
occupy space on the HD.

2006-06-27 Thread Fabio Papa
Why would you say its impossible? Is there not a way to tweak the audio
sync to the video? I can turn off the analog audio -- I don't want it
if I'm listening via spdif anyways. Its just that is slightly out of
 sync to the video.

 Norm

Oh, no, I was not suggesting it's impossible. I was thinking you wanted to
keep both audio...
In this case, though, I don't know if it's possible to pass a fixed amount of
sync value to xine. I know it's possible with mplayer.

Hi,
if you're telling that TV is connected to the analog output and the rest of
the system is connected to the digital out port of the _same_ audio card,
then I don't think there's much you can do. That delay is somewhat generated
by the audio card itself, and it shouldn't be. I remember doing something

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo 1.x and modern automatic mounting

2006-06-19 Thread Fabio Papa
Well, Fabio, do you have any more information on this? I disabled
GNOME's automount system so now it can't interfere with freevo, but
still freevo doesn't recognise discs when I insert them. Is there some
kind of configuration step required to make this in-built automounter
 work?

Hi again,
uhm, I never had any problem with this. I simply have the standard CDROM entry
in fstab. Freevo detects the cdrom from it during startup (does yours?) and
then it simply monitors eject/insert events on that drive.
For example, being at the main menu, inserting a DVD disc starts to play a few
seconds later. Inserting an AudioCD, causes the menu to jump to the audio
section, and so on.

To see CD / DVD drives, Freevo relies on either looking at /etc/fstab or
the user manually specifying them in local_conf.py. Neither method works
well with the way CD / DVD drives are now mounted on my system, which is
running cutting edge stuff - latest versions of udev, dbus, hal and
 GNOME.

Hi Adam,
while I'm not (probably) the most expert of all on Freevo, I feel I need to
tell you this: Freevo is not designed to work that way, at least I think so.
What it's for is to be the only one program running on the machine. It even
conflicts with some window manager, so it's been designed to not need one!
It has its own automounter system, which I have to say works quite well, so if
another process is doing the job, it gets confused, and I think it's
reasonable.
If you really need thing like Gnome, I would say that you have the means to
control it, eg a keyboard and some sort of mouse. So why not skipping Freevo
entirely and using some players, like gmplayer or xine?

I remember looking at this before and I'm pretty sure it was a bug. I
don't remember where the code was, probably in mplayer.py, there was a
section that passed (if I recall) aid=x as the mplayer arg for the audio
language and this was being set from 1 and not 128 as you point out. I
didn't follow this up as I patched mplayer.py and event.py to use the
remote to change language when the dvd was playing. I can send you the
changes I made when I get home if you want.

Thanks for the reply. I already did the trick and I am able to change
the audio on the fly with the remote. But, I still wanted to be able
to change the language from the beginning using the menu.

What I cannot get is why -sid is used for dvds, as opposed to alang...

Thanks anyway!

more generally, you should be able to get rid of
screensaver completely by issuing:

xset -dpms s off

This turns off both the software screensaver (black

that should do it, the first one turns suspend off, the second resets

Hi Karl,
you mean it returns an error or that you still have the screensaver?
If this is the case, try running it from an xterm and then issue
the command xset q to check if the options are being taken for

Otherwise, it could be a hardware screensaver kicking in, which

OK, so my curiosity got the better of me and I had a quick look

I managed to fix the problem.

I found that the offending part of the lsdvd output is:

Title: 01, Length: 01:44:00.360

The Length have the microseconds also (00.360)

So, when lsdvd.py try to calculate the length in function 'DVDTitle'
with the following line:

self.length   = (int(l[0])*60+int(l[1]))*60+int(l[2])

Then, l[2] = 00.360, which cause the error when converted to int.

So I just split the last field again and use the first part:

--snip--
sec = l[2].split('.')
self.length   = (int(l[0])*60+int(l[1]))*60+int(sec[0])
--snip--

I suppose the real problem is with lsdvd and not lsdvd.py, but for now
my freevo can detect DVD's and play them as it should.

not play them though, but I think that is due to a different config
setting that I have not gotten round to)

I will try a commercial DVD and see what happens.

Is there a way of manually starting mplayer? MPlayer can play the dvd.
Maybe add a menu option to launch a custom command (mplayer dvd://)
I have overseas family that put family pictures and video recordings of
holidays and events on DVD and send it to us.
It would be nice be able to play this on Freevo.

It should be possible to place an fxd file somewhere on your hd
containing the playing command for your dvd. Take a look to the wiki at

[Freevo-users] Add functions to mplayer

2005-04-28 Thread Fabio Papa
Hi list,
I wanted to know the best way I should follow to add some functions to
mplayer when using freevo to watch movies. In particular, I was
interested in the change subtitles lang, which is normally mapped on
the J key in mplayer, and the zoom function, which is mapped on two
keys, W and E.
I don't even know if those functions are allowed when using mplayer in
slave mode, but I think they should...
Thanks for any info!

RE: [Freevo-users] Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-09 Thread Fabio Papa
--- Oscilated [EMAIL PROTECTED] ha scritto:
 Hello, good sir, Fabio...
:)

Let me explain... I'm totally positive that when I
 tell freevo via the
/etc/freevo/freevo.conf file to display at 768x576,
 freevo does so. As
such, I've essentially told freevo that I'm using a
 4:3 ratio (which just
happens to be the same resolution as a typical
 television set). Now, when I
play a typical DVD using the widescreen format,
 everything works like it
should (I have the familiar letterbox). When I
 play a typical DVD using
the fullscreen format, again, everything works like
 it should (I have a
fully filled screen). I don't pass any special
 parameters whatsoever.

Monsters, Inc. is a perfect test because both
 formats are on one DVD.

 I'd love to now test 16:9, but I don't possess a
 monitor capable of such a
resolution. So, thinking logically, I would assume
 that freevo would give a
perfect screen for widescreen format, and sidebars
 for 4:3 formatted
 material.

Basically, is it possible you're over-thinking the
 issue. Does freevo
really need to pass to Mplayer the ratio when it
 already knows the
 resolution?
It's perfectly possible, I'm such a confusionist... :)
But anyway, we're talking about two different
parameters to obtain the same. Yours, I have to say,
after a long thinking, should be the right one. But
still, it is a prameter enclosed in a config file,
which is evil to most of the users. So it still needs
to be ported to the gui.
So my original idea still holds, it just now points to
a different parameter.

OK, This is where we might be completely confusing
 one another. I now think
you mean for those who are using freevo and NOT
 integrating it into an
 already established home-theater/home-entertainment
 system.
No. I am intergrating it into a home ent system, but
simply an analog one. My amp has 6 pre-in which I must
connect to 6 output from my audio card.

And that's reasonable, as it should be the
 hardware,
ie freevo or the set-top player, to do the
 downmixing.

I humbly disagree. Freevo or other DVD player
 should send ALL the available
information and allow the equipment on the other end
 decide how to handle
 it.
Well, modern dvd players actually do both what we're
saying. They output a downmixed version to the stereo
out, which can be connected to the CD-in of the
amplifier to listen to ... CDs, and they output the
entire data stream to the digital out.
But again, one other question comes to mind: doesn't
mplayer expect some exact parameter wheter it has to
pass out the AC3 stream or a PCM stream? It's not the
same, is it? Can it be automatical?

In conclusion, maybe what I was asking is a little bit
too much, after all. In the end, it's enough to set a
good resolution for the TV set, and good options for
DVD playback or CD playback.

Bye

Hi Dischi,
defining 'correct' seems to be the issue here. What we
are in doubt is, will mplayer follow whatever
resolution freevo sets?
In other words, if I set a 16:9 resolution, will
mplayer adapt to it? Because otherwise, one should use
the -monitoraspect option of mplayer.

RE: [Freevo-users] Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-07 Thread Fabio Papa

Thanks for the idea. Now, lets move on:

What (specifically) do we think would be good
options to have in a config
 plugin?
Ok,then, as we're trying to do the same work as a
number of set-top players/VCR, we should start looking
at them.
The player that should offer a good example is one
like mine, a DVD player with integrated dolby.
The important things which I setup the first time I
powered up the thing are:

-type of screen used (16:9 or 4:3).
-type of audio equipment (5.1 or stereo or dts)
-distance of the audio speakers, to introduce delays
(even if this is not so important)
-controls of brightness and saturation, with a test
image to check with

As you see, it's not a long complex list, just basic
things that needs to be set up by the user. To that,
you could then add maybe a TV list manager.
Then, wheter we should add a more complex list of
things, like audio driver for mplayer or video out
method selections, it's up debate. But users, for me,
shouldn't care of that.
Even directory selection, is not that critical. I am
taking a friend's freevo installation, for example. I
set it up for him, and setup all the options
correctly. But once in a while, there could be
changes. What if he buys a 16:9 tv set, or a 5.1
capable audio card? That should be user selectable.

Thanks.

RE: [Freevo-users] Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-07 Thread Fabio Papa
Hi Andrew,

Doesn't the resolution, which we already configure
 for freevo, determine the
 aspect ratio? (800x600 = 4:3, 1280x720 = 16:9).
 Maybe I'm missing
 something...?
Hm, I don't think there's any correlation. I think
freevo simply calls mplayer in fullscreen mode, but it
doesn't know anything about resolution. And anyway, I
don't think one should use a fixed resolution. For
example, what happens if you set a 16:9 resolution and
then whatch 4:3 TV shows?

Shouldn't the type of audio equipment really be
 type of output stream you
want to use and let the pre-amp/receiver on the
other end decide what to do
with that info? For instance, freevo should just
 output the raw dolby
digital(ex)/dts(es), and allow the equipment on the
 other end do the rest.
Modern audio equipment, when configured for only two
 speakers and a sub,
will automatically resample a 5.1 source to 2.1.
 So, in practicality,
freevo just outputs 2 channel stereo for every
 source EXCEPT DVD. Only DVD
would need to be configured as either 1) output PCM
 (is this even possible
with sound cards that don't have built-in decoding?)
 for pre-amps without
decoder chips, or 2) output raw encoded digital for
 those that have decoder
chips in their pre-amp. If some poor sap is stuck
 using freevo to output
his DVD audio stream to an old stereo only
 amplifier, that person should be
smart enough to select the 2 channel stereo option
 in the DVD's
 setup/options menu.

Also, with that in mind, there's no reason for
 freevo to know the distance
of speakers. The stereo pre-amp should already be
 configured for this.
This is what pre-amps do. All freevo needs to do is
 get the audio stream
out to the other equipment (again, in either PCM or
 raw encoded digital),
and allow that external equipment decide what to do
 from there.
All of this is true, but only, as you stated, with
modern hardware. And expansive, I would add. As a
minimum, a digital amplifier/receiver is needed. In my
view, one that wants freevo is trying to go cheap in
the first place. So you'll have to think more about
analog output from the audio card. That was what I had
in mind.
Also, I've seen many rent DVD with only 5.1 tracks, no
stereo options available. And that's reasonable, as it
should be the hardware, ie freevo or the set-top
player, to do the downmixing.

Tell me what you think!

Re: [Freevo-users] Ideas for next major release wanted

2004-09-06 Thread Fabio Papa
I don;t quite think thats what he was asking.. This
 'feature' does no
exist right now. I'd be happy to help get it
 started. But it is very
 complex.

Firstly: how to get the options? There needs to be
 a way for freevo to
tell the user (or the plugin) exactly what options
 are available?

Maybe a meta search on config()? Obviously, the
 documentation is no the
best ;-) So, this method would allow for the
 config plugin to include
config for activated plugins.. Actually, I'm quite
 chuffed with this
 idea...

Lets look at how to assign the dir to store tv
 recording: how?
 i) text box?
 ii) file system select.

But: the real issue is this:
How to get the config loaded? Right now freevo
 needs a restart on any
config change. Is this ever going to change? If
 not, in shutdown we
 need a few more options:
 i) soft restart (init.d/freevo restart)
 ii) hard restart (reboot)

Hi Mick,
I think that Michael got a little bit beyond what I
was asking for.
For sure, there are options which are difficult to set
from inside freevo, as you pointed out. And maybe,
it's even right that normal users actually _can't_ do
that. But maybe, taking a strict amount of options to
the gui should be fine, I'm thinking mostly about
mplayer/xine options (more mplayer than xine) and TV
channels.
As for the matter with freevo reloading its config at
boot time, maybe one should also think of removing
those configs from the config file and putting them
elsewhere, seen that those options are only used by
external programs.

Thanks for the attention!

Hi,
one thing I sometime miss in freevo is the ability to
do part of the configuration process from inside
freevo.
I mean, if I look at my set-top dvd player, it gives
me tools to instruct its integrated dolby wheter I
have 2 or 4 or 6 audio channel system. This would be
helpful in freevo, I think.
Maybe also other options, like default vo and filters
could be included.

[Freevo-users] Again on fxd variants

2004-05-29 Thread Fabio Papa
Hi all,
I was parsing the content of freevo_XML_data.dtd, just to be sure I understood
all correctly.
At line 141, regarding variants, I read this line:

mplayer-options CDATA #IMPLIED -- variant-specific opts

Should I read this as those options get applied _only_ on this variant?
This seems most obvious, but it's surely not what freevo is doing now. What
I'm experiencing is that freevo actually sums all the variants up. Is this
really the expected behaviour? If so, I don't think it is the correct
approach, as it closes it down to a few cases of use.

I cannot, for one, specify two different languages as the examples on the wiki
explains. I did this:

[snip]
variants
 variant name=Soundtrack Italian mplayer-options=-alang ita
part ref=p1/part
 /variant
 variant name=Soundtrack English mplayer-options=-alang eng
part ref=p1/part
 /variant
/variants
[snip]

Playing the first variant causes this command to be run:

mplayer movie.mkv [all sort of mplayer opts] -alang ita

resulting in a correct play. But selecting the second:

mplayer movie.mkv [all sort of mplayer opts] -alang ita -alang eng

which is undoubtly nonsense. And it soesn't work, as it sounds still italian.
I just want to know if this is the expected behaviour (I hope not), and if so,
how can I specify two languages in two variants.
Thanks and sorry for the long mail.

yes, freevo can handle mkv files. just add

 VIDEO_MPLAYER_SUFFIX += [ 'mkv' ]

to your local_conf.py and make sure your mplayer version supports matroska.
you can play these files without problems. mmpython might is possibly not
able to detect file data correctly though. i haven't checked that.
Hi Benjamin,
yes, I already added that, and I'm playing my files right. But what I cannot
do, for now, is select the other audio tracks, since mmpython is incapable of
detecting the file right.

Are you using any filter, during capture?

With those images not, I tryed mencoder's pp=lb, but
 that doesn't
 improve.
The only options I use are
 saturation=-25:hue=-35:contrast=0:brightness=-15

You don't even scale? That's a filter too...
In any case, if you are scaling interlaced content,
mind that you can only scale deinterlaced images, so
deinterlacing must be the first filter on the list,
like:
-vf pp=lb,scale=xxx:yyy
and not the other way around. That's very important.
In any case, post your complete capture command. I'll
see if I find something suspect.

  Because that
seems like filters working on interlaced videos
That's not ossible. However, you can separate the
 two
fields and treat them as a single image, and then
recompose the original interlaced frame. Tell me
 if
  you want details.

 Please...
