Re: Wallstreet s-video port

2002-12-13 Thread Luis Sequeira
My daughter did a nice little PowerPoint presentation on her iBook for
my other daughter who is coming home from college. I thought it would
be neat to show it on tv. I don't know how to get it out of the iBook,
other than the video out port with the dongle for vga, so a transfered
it to my Wallstreet, with the thought of using the s-video out port to
my tv's s video in port. Doesn't work. Is there something I'm
missing, or is this another case of a port that doesn't work on a
wallstreet with OSX.

The s-video port on the Wallstreet is a video-OUT port. I am not sure
I understand what exactly does not work.

1) If your iBook is one of the white ones (not the roundish colored
older models), it should have a tv-out port. To use it you may need
to purchase an apple AV cable (not included with these machines).
These cables carry video and audio out to tv. If you don't need audio
and have a similar cable from, say, a camcorder, then you may be able
to use that, but you'll have to *not* push the plug all the way into
the iBook, and fiddle a bit to align the video connector (the Apple
AV cable has a different layout of the video and two audio
connectors, so the same port can also be used just as a stereo audio
out).

2) If you must use the Wallstreet: Try to connect the video out and
have the tv turned on and with the right input selected *before* you
start the wallstreet (That was necessary with OS 9, I'm not sure
about X). If your screen does not show up on the tv, look at the
Displays part of System Preferences. Make sure to select All
instead of just Recommended in the Resolutions pane. Scroll down
and see if there is any option that refers to the S-video out or tv
or something like that. If it works, then you should have your
desktop showing on tv. If the screen goes black, just wait about 15
secs and it will revert to the built-in display.

Lubricating an HP inkjet printer

2002-12-13 Thread Marty Lindower
Hi all-

Sorry if this is a little OT, but my HP Deskjet 935C _is_ hooked to my
Wallstreet ;-) Well, today, it's started to make some nasty-sounding
vibrating noises each time the ink carriage moves from side to side. Is
there any way for me to lubricate the rod holding the ink cartridges? What
should I use? HP's website is brain-dead today, and I've got a zillion
holiday cards to print!

TIA,

Marty,
I was just researching the same problem on my Epson 740.
I went to fixyourownprinter.com and came on these directions for mine:

Clean the shaft that the cartridge holder slides on. Then put some light
oil on it, but be careful not to spill any. There is a felt piece that´s
soaked with oil inside the holder and sometimes this gets dry and causes
these problems.

The person used WD40 to lubricate it. I'm planning to do it on my 740,
hopefully your HP would benefit from similar treatment.

Regards,
Joe

2002-12-13 Thread John Slavin

Thanks for all you help. I figured it out. The problem was with a
Recoton switch box I was using. When I hooked up the Wallstreet
directly to the tv, the Wallstreet had not problem finding it.

And thanks for the hints regarding the iBook. I didn't realized that
the little round plug was video too. I thought it was an audio out
jack. I have a Canon ZR40 Camcorder and the plug worked just fine (and
the signal went through the switch box too). As Luis mentioned, you
can't plug it all the way in though. You have to back it out a little
to work. I discovered that by accident as in frustration when it
didn't work I started to pull the plug out and all of a sudden my
desktop appeared on the tv screen. Don't understand why Apple couldn't
use a standard length plug.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Cannon Camera Problem

2002-12-13 Thread jcallahan
I have a PB Wallstreet and am using a USB PCMCIA CARD. It works fine for
all my USB applications and did so for my Kodak digital camera for at
least six months until while burning a large file, I had a freeze which
destroyed all my drivers etc. etc.. After about six hours of reloading
everything I got everything to work again except my USB camera
connection. I talked to Kodak about it and they said that their cameras
are only compatible with built in USB cards and will not work with PC
cards. They couldn't explain why it worked initially and then failed
after the freeze up. They also couldn't explain why their advertising
failed to mention that they had this problem with PC cards. I have a
desktop with built in USB so its not a great problem, but I miss the
advantage of downloading pictures while traveling, and using the PB's
memory rather than the memory card in the camera. It also helped with
previewing and deleting unwanted pictures. Hope this helps.

It sounds like the hard disk was hit. If you have the time, try backing up
important files and reformat the drive. See how it goes. If no problems are
found, you might want to reinstall the OS.

(`F... Up Beyond All Repair'), later modified to foobar. Early versions of
the Jargon File interpreted this change as a post-war bowdlerization, but it
it now seems more likely that FUBAR was itself a derivative of `foo' perhaps
influenced by German `furchtbar' (terrible) - `foobar' may actually have
been the original form.

The usual assumption when a manufacturer says their USB device only
works with built in USB is sheer laziness on their part. They don't
want to support add-in USB cards and assume it's a small market so
they can blow it off. Does your USB now work with other devices? It
may be a matter of which USB driver you use.

A simple solution is to get a flash card adapter to read your
camera's memory card on the laptop. This is what I use for the three
cameras I work with. Kodak cameras are usually CompactFlash and the
adapters for those are around $10.

ps What does a cannon have to do with it, did you shoot your camera.
:) (cannon is a gun, Canon makes cameras)

2002-12-13 Thread Hal
A couple things I'd try. Open it up and remove the processor module and
ram and reseat them in case they moved a bit. If that doesn't help, try
booting from CD and see if it runs OK from the CD. The impact may have
damaged he hard drive. If you're having problems reinstalling the OS,
that's a likely culprit. If you have an external firewire drive you can
boot from, definitely try that as well.

Hope this helps.

Re: wallstreet and digital camera, CF card OK, smartmedia is not

2002-12-13 Thread Andrew
Date: Thu, 12 Dec 2002 22:11:43 -0500
Subject: Wallstreet vs Canon PowerShot camera Help
From: Norm Kamp [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What I think they are saying is I cannot use my PDQ with their camera, since
it does not have a built-in USB interface. I do have a USB PC card
installed and it works with anything that I tried.

Any input would be appreciated.
Norm Kamp

Norm
I use my MacAlly USB card to connect to my Olympus D-100 and it works
fine.

I would caution against putting a Smart media card into the PC card
slot.
Unlike compact flash cards smart media cards don't have any on-board
electronics and can be corrupted by being read in a MAC card slot.

As a result I use the USB connection so the camera's electronics will do
the translation.
If your camera has a compact flash card you should have no problem.

Avoid the problem by purchasing a card reader, either one for your PCMCIA
slot or even better a Lexar Firewire reader, which is what I use with mine.
I never hook my camera up directly to my Pismo and just use one of my

Re: Making choices

2002-12-13 Thread Obi-Wan
On 12/13/02 5:57 AM, Kochkodin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the
Cybertrough:

I called Mac Zone last night and told them that they lost a $2500+ sale
due to this issue. I spoke with the night shift supervisor who said he was
unaware of the situation and promisd to pass the info on to the day shift
corporate honchos...I also told them that I would do my best to dissuade any
and all purchases now and in the future by the members of the Penn State Mac
Users group. I disagree profoundly with Charles' religious leanings but it's
just like tv...BYPASS it if you don't like it..

I agree with you, but I have something to say. Everyone is saying that it
is free speech basically. It is Dan's right to post what he wants to on his
site. Essentially that is true...but not without consequences. Mine may be
an unpopular opinion, but I must say that it is also Mr. Bauer's right to
complain about it if he sees fit. He is allowed to complain about a
religious article posted to Mac-Content site (or at least bring it to the
attention of advertisers so that they are aware of it). He probably didn't
join Lem to talk about religion. He probably joined to talk about Macs.
Why is everyone slamming him for complaining? It's his free speech right
just as it is Dan's to post such an article. (disclaimer: I don't know Mr.
Bauer, and he may be a total jerk in real life. I have only heard of him
through this discussion).

Dan knows that I am not a religious person and we get along fine, but he
also know that I support LEM 100%. This article bothered me as well. Not
to the point where I would contact advertisers, but it did bother me, and I
am a Nanny on many LEM lists. It made me wonder if I should spend anymore
time here with LEM. It made me wonder if I want my name attached to a Mac
site that promotes religious rants by it's writers. I think it is important
for you all to consider (whether you like it or not) that about 20% of this
population at LEM (as in US Society) is not only *not* Christian, but not
religious at all. We have rights as well. Sometimes people who are
devoutly religious stomp all over other people's toes without even thinking
that they are doing anything wrong or offending. I suggest that everyone
think about it. I think about how my opinions and statements will affect a
religious person before I make them, and you should do the same.

I have said my peace. I will allow anyone else to say theirs, but I declare
this thread dead at 7p.m. PST today Friday 12/13. Please drop it by then.
Thanks.

I agree with the others. Remove and reseat the processor. I can't tell you
how many Pismo's I have fixed after a drop by simply reseating the
processor. When a Pismo gets dropped the case tends to flex popping the
processor out or partially unseating it. If that doesn't help, then check

I suspect it may be a camera specific thing. If I read the CF from my
camera on my Mac it actually puts the invisible Desktop files on the card.

The pictures are stored in a folder (on mine) called PHOTO650 (I have an
Epson PhotoPC 650) but if they're just stored as loose shots at the root
of the card, these invisible files might give the camera fits.

Putting the invisible files on the disk is a function of PC Exchange
/ File Exchange, not the type of flash memory. I haven't seen a
camera yet that puts it's pictures in the root folder. Even if it
did, other files being there shouldn't bother it.

In any event, the Mac isn't corrupting anything.

I was just researching the same problem on my Epson 740.
I went to fixyourownprinter.com and came on these directions for mine:

Clean the shaft that the cartridge holder slides on. Then put some

causes
these problems.

The person used WD40 to lubricate it. I'm planning to do it on my 740,
