Hm. My local Apple service center claims he can fix them, but the one I gave
him, he tore the ribbon cable inside, so I fear to give him another. :-) I
have read somewhere online, that the motor is what is going bad in these
things. If this is true, it is possible that drives now coming out of Apple
to replace them are using better motors, but if that is true, it happened
after the Pismo was discontinued. I bought my Pismo in January, after the G4
came out, and it was manufactured in January (shipped directly from Taiwan).
When my current drive finally decides it doesn't want to mount DVDs any
more, then I will take it back to him, and let you all know how it goes. :-)

Re: Playing CD's

2003-02-23 Thread K.
My Pismo 400 had a Mat drive that developed a problem...It started to make
grinding noises on different cd's and dvd's and shortly thereafter it got to
where pressing the button on the side wouldn't even open it up. I had to use the
end of a paper clip in the little hole to get it to open. Once a disc was
inside, it opened by pulling the disc icon to the trash. This occurred a few
months ago when the mobo went bad at the same time...Called AppleCare and sent it
in. When it came back, there was an LG drive in it that is working perfectly so
far.

Mike K

Questions regarding Pismo DVD drive

2003-02-23 Thread Mark_PHILIP
Hi all,
I have the following Pismo: PBG3 400MHz, 12GB HDD, OS9.2.2 & 10.2.3
I have encountered the problem that not all DVDs are able to be loaded
(mounted).
When I insert a movie DVD, the MacOS normally recognises it and then loads
the DVD Player application.
However, some DVDs are not able to be mounted and the DVD drive just sits
there, reading the disc. Nothing appears on the Finder.
The same DVDs mount and play fine on new PC laptops running Windows Me. The
same DVDs also play fine on a standalone DVD player.

I suspect some problem with the DVD drive. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Mark.

Random Notes from the List Mom

2003-02-23 Thread Dan Knight
It's a sunny, chilly February day in Michigan. Some of the snow is slowly
melting. And I'm as caught up with the last 7-10 days worth of list
messages as I can be.

Due to some configuration changes (specifically changing the IP address
of the server itself), I've missed all list messages from sometime
Thursday morning until earlier today. I don't know what's been going on
on the lists, and one of the nannies is sending copies of several digests
to me. Once I receive those, I'll send out a plea for missed digests.

I'm working with the nannies to establish more specific policies on when,
why, and how we ban and/or block subscribers, deal with violations of
list policy, etc. If we decide to make these available to the public,
I'll send out a general announcement.

If you want to be unsubscribed from a list, change to digest mode, or
change your email address -- and the list server is uncooperative --
first check that you are using the same address you used to subscribe. If
it still doesn't work, be sure to mention the name of the list(s) you
want updated.

BTW, there is no automated process for changing your email address.
Subscribe from the new address, confirm the subscription, wait for
messages to start coming in, and then unsubscribe from the old one. Once
our own list server software is up and running, this and other things
will be much easier to do both via email and using a browser.

We are offering $6/year email addresses at lemlists.com, which is not run
on our very own server. The server is hosted by Coleman Web-Internet
Services, and Ryan Coleman is the system administrator. More details at
. These addresses are only offered to members of our
email lists.

We will also be offering email addresses, webspace, and other services
using the lowendmac.net domain shortly. We should even be able to handle
publication of iCal calendars and provide iTools-like access to your
storage space. More details on that soon.

Finally, there has been some question as to what is on topic and off
topic on our lists. If the question involves a computer covered by the
list, it's almost undoubtedly on topic. This includes getting software
and printers to work. If it involves politics, it's definitely off topic.
Let's try to stick to Macs and the programs we run on them and the
peripherals we use with them.

Thanks!

Dan the listmom

Apple is in denial over this. When I called them, they denied that there was
_any_ issue with the LG drive, and took exception to my mentioning of it.
When I mentioned that I knew I had an LG drive, the fellow on the phone got
nervous, and then very short with me. I wasn't at all rude or demanding, and
was quite polite, in fact, despite his treatment of me. No, Apple knows
about it, of this I am sure. They cannot be ignorant of it, and the behavior
of the telephone rep was pretty indicting, in my opinion. Actually, the
impression I got was that the man knew about it, but was forbidden to say
anything, under pain of firing. In short, Apple has procedures in place to
turn customers with complaints away. Period.

I like the Time Synch (especially b/c I'm on high speed most of the time so
it doesn't normally add any overhead) because computer clocks tend not to be
the most reliable of clocks and I like my clocks to be within 5-10 secs of
real time.

But, more importantly, I want to know *conclusively* what it is that is
causing the random dialling events. So far Rendezvous seems to be the most
likely culprit b/c turning it off fixed things. I'm going to wait a few days
and see if random dialling reoccurs. If the dialling starts up again, the
next experimental stage is to turn off Time Synch to see if that takes care
of things, but all the talk on Apple's discussion boards point to Rendezvous
as being the source of 'spurious' TCP/IP network activity. That's not to say
that the TimeSynch isn't the source of this problem -- perhaps it's an
interaction b/t Time Synch and Rendezvous that causes this bizarre
(annoying) problem?

Besides, I'm not losing anything by turning off Rendezvous b/c I have no
hardware that can use it and I couldn't really care a less if bookmarks get
shared between browsers ;). Plus, it seems like a security risk and added
processor overhead (and on a 400 MHz G3 with a paltry 8 MB of video RAM
every cycle is valuable).

Re: Rendezvous

2003-02-23 Thread Eric D.
Well, I turned off Rendezvous and it seems to have stopped the mysterious
random dialling when on dialup internet access with 'connect when needed'
turned on.

I'll have to wait a few more days before passing final judgement on this
solution (as opposed to turning off network time synch... haven't done that
yet so that I can be certain of what is causing the problem) but this
preliminary result points to Rendezvous as being the problem.

On a different note...

OS X 10.2.4 now recognises my 17" monitor, the KDS Avitron AV7TF for what it
is *and* allows me to use all the resolutions the monitor supports. I don't
know when Apple finally re-introduced this support (b/c I only just took off
the port protector b/c it made the SVGA connector too long) but it's a
pleasant surprise (it just means that I'm going to have to get a software
control strip plugin for OS 9 to run 1152x870 :(.

The Avitron AV7TF (nice monitor BTW) doesn't return 1152*870 in its DCC
information (for Winblows plug-and-pray) and earlier incarnations of OS X
(10.0 and up, OS X Beta worked!!!) and OS 9.1 and later used this DCC info
and only allowed me the "simple" resolutions, 640x480, 800x600, 832x624,
1024x768 and 1280x1024.

My kludge was to get a SVGA "port protector" and rip out the DCC pin (# 4?),
thus tricking the Mac OS into thinking a generic "dumb" SVGA monitor was
hooked up, thereby allowing me to access every resolution supported by the
video card (& thus, also the monitor).

PS In OS 9.1 and up the monitors control panel/control strip plugin became
too "smart" and would only allow "approved" resolutions (ctrl-clicking on
the monitors control strip plugin wouldn't allow me to access non-official
resolutions like 1152x870... there were control strip plugins for OS 9.1 and
9.2.x that did allow access to everything the video card supported but I
don't like software solutions since third party stuff generally undermines a
computer's stability).

See if this works for your machine. Gently push the cradle closed (one
finger does it), rather than with any force, just enough to seat it with a
easy click. I had this problem for a long time before I figured out what was
required.

On a similar note. A number of times I asked this group what to do about
resolution changing when the iTunes visual pulldown menu was used directly
after a Net connection--in vain. The magnification would go to the largest
possibility and I'd have to restart in order to function again.

I've found that clicking on a Word document first, before iTunes and after
the Net connection, solves the problem.

Another Question. I downloaded Netscape 7 to replace 4.2, and all of my Web
documents from the earlier edition are now empty! I would have thought that
the later edition would have included the former capabilities. I'm using
OS9.1. (I've since switched to IE, but still wonder about the other change).

Thanks, Tivo

I have two (actually three if you count the one I replaced with the UDJA 330
CD/RW) Matsushita drives in my Pismo's and have had absolutely no problems
with them playing either CD's or DVD's, but I have friends that have the LG
version and they all have had problems with the drives.

One of my friends got Apple to replace his LG drive under Apple Care and
they send another LG drive as the replacement, so they must not feel it is a
problem with the brand of drive. I just don't understand how so many people
could be having so many problems with this brand drive and Apple doesn't see
it as a issue.

Are these commercial CD's or burned CD's?

Check the model number of the module. (On the bottom of the drive when you
remove it) If it is M7931 (DRN-8080B) then you have the LG drive, and it's
going bad on you. If you still have AppleCare, then run, do not walk to
Apple's support and have them replace it, and try to demand that you get a
Matsushita drive in replacement. I don't know if it will work, but it can't
hurt to try.

You know, I am having difficulties believing that Apple still pretends that
there is not a problem with this drive. Has anybody thought about a class
action suit? I'm not normally in favor of these things, but this is getting
a bit ridiculous. There is definitely something wrong with this particular
drive, yet Apple pretends that there is nothing wrong. Surely somebody can
do something...

Playing CD's

2003-02-23 Thread Demetrius
Greetings,

When I try to play cd's on my Pismo I sometimes have to re-insert
the cd a few times in order for my Pismo to begin playing the cd. I
get a clicking sound as if it is struggling to play the cd. Is this a
bad sign, or is there an adjustment I can make?

take care,

   Demetrius
