Re: WALLSTREET /250 0SX 10.2 INSTALL ?? HELP!!

2003-03-12 Thread Kris Dunn
I had what I think was a similar problem trying to install 10.2 on my
wallstreet 250.

I was forced to upgrade because I was getting a flashing question mark at
startup. It would boot from the 10.2 cd, but then hang during the install. I
tried everything I could think of including:
Removing suspect ram, choosing to do the minimal install, using the BSD file
system, and propping up the back of the machine in a cooling effort.

I was persistent and it finally installed. I was doing all of this at the
time, but I would bet that doing the minimum install and removing suspect
ram did more good than anything else. After getting everything setup and
running software update to 10.2.4. I thought I would try installing optional
things off the 10.2 cd, big mistake. Once I booted off the 10.2 cd it put me
right back were I started. It would no longer boot and gave me a flashing
question mark.

This time I repeated, adding some disk scanning with the utility included on
the 10.2 cd. My new install has been fairly stable for about a week now.
I've added back the suspect ram with few problems. I have had the video lock
up twice I believe, during installs also. However, I was able to listen for
the disk to quit spinning and shutdown gracefully using keyboard
combinations.

For what it's worth

The Wallstreet is most definitely supported as an OS X machine, the
Kanga is the only G3 based computer that isn't supported (and therefore
will not install at all w/o assistance) AFAIK. I run 10.2.4 on my
Wallstreet 250 and it runs like a top, installed directly from the 10.2
disc that came with my TiBook, havent had any major problems with it
since (although it isnt quite as stable as the TiBook)

Their Dialup is awesome. No drops, good coverage (some holes in West Texas,

The biggest thing for me is their customer service. I called them up after
I got to Florida and had my DSL set up. I told them I needed a faster speed

Yes, the Tibooks are ok. Apple (technically) does not allow hard drive

Broken cookies

2003-03-12 Thread Mark Kippert
I'm having problems with Internet Explorer 5.2.2 in OSX v10.2.4.

Before you tell me to switch to Safari, I already have. However I still need
IE5 for some online stuff such as banking, purchases etc. where Safari is
not functioning properly yet.

Which brings me to my problem. For whatever reason, my cookies keep setting
to never accept. I keep changing to Never Ask and it keeps defaulting
back. I've even tried setting the to accept, quitting IE5 and opening it
again in hopes that this preference will be saved. I've logged out,
restarted etc. with no luck.

I thought I would delete the IE5 preference file but can't determine what
file to delete. I've checked the Preference folder in the Library Folder and
while I find an Explorer folder, I don't find a preference file to delete
(or perhaps it's one of the other not-so-obvious-files I need to trash).

IE5 has also been acting sluggish and has even crapped out a few times in
the last couple days. While I'm not an M$ advocate, I have to say that I've
been very satisfied with IE's performance up until now.

Anyone have any (useful) suggestions? I'm guessing I'll need to reinstall
but I'm hoping for something simpler like just deleting one prefs file.

TIA,
-Mark

It seems from your description that when it starts, it tries to boot from OS

Did you set your startup in the 'Startup Disk' pane in 'System Preferences'?

Pismo DVD-ROM drive

2003-03-12 Thread Michel Treisman

My Pismo fell off a table and the edge of the DVD ROM drive was ripped
off. The drive itself still works fine but I need a new
plastic case for it. I have not been able to find it as a spare part.
Does anyone know where I could get a new case? Or perhaps a dead DVD
drive to cannibalize?

OK, so, I don't remember clearly from your description, but are you able to

in the 'Startup Disk' preference pane in 'System Preferences'? What does
that say?

Re: WALLSTREET /250 0SX 10.2 INSTALL ?? HELP!!

2003-03-12 Thread Art Montes De Oca

If you plan to update to 10.2 (I strongly recommend), then, install 10.1,
then update to 10.2. Then, use the software update that should be smart
enough to tell you what update you need. I would imagine that you will need
the combo update (10.2.3 and 10.2.4) and then there will be the security
update.

Make sure you follow the right order or you will have problems, as you have
experienced...

-Laurent.

AH, I HAVE TRIED ALL THE VARIOUS COMBINATIONS... 10.1 then the combo
update in the prescribed order , 10.1.5 hangs the machine with a dark
screen. 10.2 with or without the prescribed update will also hang the
machine after a partial install. I would be happy to get just as far as
10.1.5 (inorder to run a piece of software) but alas I can not seem to
solve this problem. I will try to remove some ram (although it has run
well with it installed on 9.2.2) The 30 gig HD seems to be ok but I
guess I could try to reinstall the orig 5 gig...I am at a loss...

You're mentioning RAM. Does this Wallstreet had more RAM added to it? If so,
it would be indeed a good idea to put back the original RAM. I've read
numerous messages about OS X being a lot more picky about RAM. I would think
the hard disk is fine.

From what I understand, the wallstreet is an 'old world' machine,
meaning that the boot rom is just that, rom. New World machines (like
my TiBook) actually store the contents of the boot rom on disk (correct
me if I am wrong.) Since this is an old world machine, the os 9 loader
begins and loads the software that boots os x. On my Wallstreet, this
sequence of Happy Mac - Apple Logo only happens after a PRAM reset, if
this is happening to you every time you shut down, your PRAM battery
may have gone south.

I have used A.I.D. In the past and liked it. It does work in Jaguar but eBay

Re: selling on ebay

2003-03-12 Thread rich graham
Hi Andre -

I set up my wife in an Antique Selling business last October. I've tried
some web-based auction management tools, but they all seem to fail
miserably: being a graphics and marketing guy, the online services generate
very ugly listings, and offer clumsy interfaces.

I tried using A.I.D. too, and found their listing options somewhat tedious.
Also, inquiries to their support folks seemed slow and uncaring. It's true
that ebay changed the way that outside vendors access their API, and I don't
think that the A.I.D. folks are going to continue.

Then I found eLister, by Black Magik Software:

http://www.blackmagik.com

Although the eLister program is shareware, it's a slick and intuitive as
you'd expect ANY Boxed Retail Mac software to be. Timothy Brown responds
quickly to questions, even the dumb ones that are answered in the manual.
And the manual is VERY thorough.

He provides about 25 templates, all of which can be modified very easily
with Simpletext or BBedit or the text editor of your choice.

For listing, I'd recommend eLister. It's the best $$$ you'll ever spend on
ebay listing software. Again, since ebay changed the API, the fee is annual
(since the software vendor has to pay per API call, this is entirely fair).

BUT as far as sales histories, P L's, and regular business stuff, you'll
need to get some type of accounting package. And DO NOT get QuickBooks 5 for
OS X. You'll be so sad, you'll probably have to go into therapy. Save your
money, and try something else. Our volume is so small, the wife doesn't do
the accounting thing on the computer.

One thing you probably haven't discovered is picture management. In Antiques
and Collectibles, buyers want to see lots of pics. Managing these can get a
little hairy, so I wrote an Applescript that takes a group of shots from the
camera, moves them into a folder, and renames them with their Item Name and
a Date Code. You can find this script by searching for eBay on the
Macscripters.net BBS. You'll have to do a little tweaking to make it work
for your, but it does work nicely.

Hope this info helps. Feel free to reply off-list if you have more
questions.

Power supplies, Wireless cards

2003-03-12 Thread Mike Barnes
First - simple question, very O/T: does anyone know if the power
supplies are swappable between the Beige G3 tower and desktop cases? I
have a spare from a desktop machine, and I know someone with a dead
power supply in their tower.

Secondly - I've been using a Lucent wireless card in my old Lombard with
the drivers from http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/ and it's been
working perfectly at home with my D-Link hub. The other day though, I
tried to set up a little peer-to-peer link between it and my TiBook, and
couldn't get it to notice the network I'd created from the TiBook. It
just sat there saying no signal all the time.

Has anyone ever done anything similar? Is it some fundamental
incompatability between the third party stuff and the Apple Airport
setup? I've noticed the Lucent stuff is nowhere near as nicely
integrated into the System Preferences, but it's never caused me an
issue until now.

Has anyone used the other wireless drivers from IOXperts
(http://www.ioxperts.com/80211b_X.html) at all? Do they have any great
value over what the free drivers get me?

Thanks,
Mike.

Re: Hard Drive Updates

2003-03-12 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
Someone replied to one of my posts a while back that changing the hard
drive in an Apple notebook does not actually void the warranty, just
anything you screw up isn't covered under your warranty.

Thanks for your advice.

I have a Pismo and called Apple today about problems with OS 10.2. I
have read the article about customer installed parts and thought no
problem. I was told by Apple that they will not look at the machine
unless it is sent in with the original hard drive and the original
128 ram installed.. I told the service rep that I had installed a
new drive and a memory upgrade. He did not care. The old parts had to
be in the machine. They would charge 50 bucks to back up data on the
original drive, but would not assure me that the data would be saved
successfully.
YMMV
Geoff

iBook Audio Out

2003-03-12 Thread Christopher D Helmkamp
Here's a puzzle...

I have the iBook 700, the 2002 model with the Radeon Mobility (16) but
not the Radeon 7500 (32). I noticed a funky outer ring around my
audio out/headphone jack that looks like it could also take another
kind of plug. It's hard to describe, but it's definitely different
than the metal ring around the headphone jacks of older iBook models I
have seen.

Does anyone know what this outer ring is for? It appears to have
some metal contacts and shape to it (to prevent the plug from going in
any other way). This model uses the video port for video out, not the
older kind that uses the combined audio/visual jack, so I wouldn't
expect the headphone jack to be anything other than a plain stereo
minijack.

What's the deal?
