Hi All- I just wanted to update those who helped me with my battery issues on my new 12 PB. I DID return it but not to Apple, to Microcenter where I purchased it. They exchanged it with no questions asked. That is Microcenter's policy but I wonder what would of happened if I had sent it back to Apple? Would it have been so painless?? Just a thought... Re: PowerBook 12 Battery
Apple seem to be very polar. I've had cases where I've been on the phone less than 10 minutes, have had a full apology, replacements sent out (and sometimes a complimentary gift), with boxes for sending the offending component back. Other times I've had the dreaded It is not a problem, that is normal or the even worse It falls within the computers specification. It all depends who you talk to I suppose. Re: 12 Speed
Same thoughts here, and we're not alone, many people on both MacRumors.com and Apple's own discussion boards have commented on this. Unfortunately putting it on Apple's boards got me a threatening email saying if I did it again my ISP would be informed and my IP blocked from registering or posting again. Everyone seems to agree it is a collection of issues, which could be solved by: - Firmware update (to solve the dreadfully slow booting) - Graphics drivers (current implementation is very, very poor) - OS Updates (the cynic in me says Apple will put this into 10.3, as an incentive, imagine a post on Apple's discussion boards saying I just installed 10.3 on my 12/15/17 PB and WOW! I never knew the machine could go that fast, every-thing's snappy, my frame-rates in games have improved no end etc etc) I suppose all you can do for now is ensure you have the latest updates from Apple (10.2.6, Bluetooth update, CD firmware update, iMovie 3.0.3, iSync 1.1, Quicktime 6.3 etc etc) Matt On Friday, June 6, 2003, at 12:25 pm, Scott Howe wrote: This has probably already been a topic on here so apologies if this is redundancy in action for you all but I was wondering what thoughts owners of the 12 have concerning it's speed. That's correct, if you have that WD 120 gig HD (BTW do you have the one with 2 or 8MB cache?) you have to yank every jumper on it and use it jumperfree, that's what I heard a while ago on another list when some one used it in a G4, I have saved those emails at home if you're interested, because I have that HD, but not in my Mac, but in my PC, but want to use it in my Mac later on when I've got a PCI ATA controller. Re: 12 Speed
I initially found it a bit disturbing hearing that Apple would not permit unhindered discussion of their products. However, on reflection, the list belongs to Apple. Imagine a bulletin board inside an Apple store where consumers can post messages. Why should Apple (as a huge profitable powerful corporation) allow any discussion to appear on that bulletin board that didn't enhance their image and contribute to their bottom line? This is definitely not Russia 1948! In the former USSR a capitalist firm such as Apple would not be permitted to exist, not permitted to innovate, not permitted to compete nor would individuals be permitted any opportunity to criticize an industry. For crying out loud you are complaining about a corporations right to manage its image. You don't like it tough. Start your own company. Your freedom of speech has not be infringed by an agency of the United States government. Cries of censorship are out of line. You are absolutely free to discuss/praise/criticize Apple, Microsoft, Ford Motor Company and Joe's Carryout Store on your own list. Or this list. Or your very own newspaper or e'zine. Why do you want to abridge Apple's freedom to operate their business as they see fit? Your right to free speech and assembly is guaranteed by the United States Consitution not Apples papers of incorporation. Look, I love my Mac but I have no illusions about Apple as a corporation. Because I bought one of Apples products and as a consumer of a huge, profitable, powerful CAPITALIST corporation's (in your own words) product, consumers like me call the shots, not the corporations themselves. A products quality makes or breaks a company, not the companies rules and regulations concerning the ability to discuss it or not. In this particular case, I believe a discussion about the speed of a product that I paid $1799.00 for is a valid point to share with other consumers who may or may not be researching the strengths/weaknesses of a particular product. Someone coming to Apple's CONSUMER based discussion board would assume that it's a forum for users of that product to discuss not only the pros of a particular product, but also consumers TRUE experiences in the real world. Re: 12 Speed
The threatening email was really not that threatening at all, they simply asked you to cease and desist posting of your what I can only imagine were negative emails on their company discussion boards. Apple has not said they are going to come break down your doors and haul you off to jail, they simply stated you would be barred from posting for a period of time on THEIR servers. I thought that the email was fairly professional. They have not barred you from posting emails on other lists (although I am sure those lists also have rules). Your point about the product may be right on, however your cries of censorship I believe are a bit off. The rules of those boards are very clear for anyone who wants to post. I completely agree with Mr Reeder. Re: PowerBook 12 Battery
My experience with Apple has been very very good. The time from the call to Apple, receiving the shipping box and then receiving the goods is usually 3 days max. The rule of thumb here is Never take No for an answer less than three times. Just like the 411 information operator, if a customer service rep doesn't give you what you want, call back a short while later and talk to another customer service rep. In my experience, it works a very high percentage of the time. Bruce on 6/6/03 3:42 AM, Matt Peacock at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Apple seem to be very polar. Re: 12 Speed
Considering you did not read the post Todd, I find it very hard to accept what you have just said. I did not cry about censorship, I merely stated the fact that when I posted about the problem it was deleted and I was sent the posted email. You have taken my comments out of context and exaggerated them. I completely understand the need for Apple to preserve a company image, and I have no intention of running them down, on the contrary I sing their praises every opportunity I get. The rules are clear, being a member, and moderator, of many forums, I know what is and is not acceptable for discussion. I did not start a complaint, I was completely professional in asking for people's opinions on the speed, how to improve it, and was it possibly just my machine with a fault. The fact that Apple got very defensive about this is out of my hands, however not listening to the consumers is a self-defeating prophecy, once again I draw your attention to the MDD fans and the Airport deaths. Apple clearly states the discussion boards are there for users to post their problems, they have become a massive part of customer support. After paying $1800 for this machine, and approximately $10,000 in the last two years on Apple hardware and software, and being repeatedly told about the forums, I did not see an issue in posting an OBSERVATION. Finally apologies to the list nanny, while typing this I received the request to cease discussion. I understand this has now gone off-topic, but my original reply to Scott's message was completely on topic, and I do not appreciate having judgments made abut me from that reply. iTunes Importing
I find it interesting that there are complaints about MP3 Quality. I remember when CDs first came out. They were really really awful. Portions of some recordings sounded like fingernails on chalkboards to me. This is because taking good music and converting it to digital seriously degrades the recording--particularly when you only sample at 44khz. Also your machine then has to recreate a sound based upon that code and so the music creation algorithm in your player is critical. Over time, these have improved but modern CDs are still not comparable to the output of modest hi-fi equipment from the late 70s. Some MP3s really stink because of the really awful encoding out there. I have never encoded using iTunes, so I don't know if it is reasonably good or not at encoding. I would think you would want variable bit rate and so forth--and I'm not sure it has that. And I don't know how to control the dynamic range. I suspect it's a lot like digital photography. Every time you go through some digital conversion process you lose a whole bunch of information/data/whatever. Maybe if you went direct from mike to MP3 you would have less of a problem than going from CD to MP3. But when you say that MP3s are bad, I can't help but suggest that CDs are bad, so what do you want? -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... And I don't know how to control the dynamic range. The real key is what kind of equipment you listen to the MP3s or AAC files with. Cheap headphones plugged right in to your computer or iPod (including the iPod's own earbuds) are not going to reveal too much of the loss incurred in the process, especially with AAC files. If you get nicer headphones, and use high-quality headphone stereo amplification, you will definitely begin to notice the lossy file formats compared to original sources. Still, 192kbps AAC files seem to be right up there near source-quality, as are LAME alt-preset MP3s. I agree about the early CDs. The first CD masters were often made right off the old LPs, instead of off the original tapes! Led Zeppelin IV is a prime example -- the first issue of this CD sounds absolutely terrible. As with all music, you just have to look around for what works best on the equipment you have. --Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Interesting TiBook problems
Sounds like your inverter or motherboard is just about toast.. Better get it looked at by an Apple Certified tech... Does anyone else have these problems? Sounds flickers in and out, random display cutouts resulting in going to sleep for a few seconds, coming back, and going to sleep again. Only way to fix this is to reboot. I just want to know if anyone else has had this kind of problem and what the fix is. My TiBook is well out of warranty and I am not up to putting a lot of money into her. S-Video out on Wallstreet under OS X
Does anyone know how to get S-video output on a Wallstreet under OS X (10.2.6 to be specific). I've tried waking from sleep and booting with the S-Video connection (actually a composite monitor and the WS S-video adapter). When booted in OS 9.2.2 it works fine. Under X there is no sign of it in the Displays preferences nor any mention I can find in Help. Is it just the case that OS X doesn't support external video on a Wallstreet? -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Got my Lombard 400 Mhz, need IR port cover and floppy drive
Glad tidings! I just got a 400 Mhz Lombard with DVD yet. I needed the sellers guidance but I found the Apple DVD player and was able to see a little of a Bond DVD. Now to hunt up a S-video cable and see what it looks like on the larger screen. The DVD drive is a Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8171 rev 080E , is this the troublesome one? I have noticed that sometimes it won't recognize a CD or DVD. It also seems to start up periodically and move the heads. Is it supposed to be doing this? It's got 128 MB RAM, I'm thinking it would be worth upping that for OS 9.2, how much makes sense? Any preferred vendors? I need to get a expansion bay floppy, is the VST superdisk the best option? I'm also moving up the the keyprints on the screen problem, I can't see them when the screen is on, should I worry about them? Are they going to get worse? Lastly this machine came without the rubber feet and the IR port window. Any tips on sources? I've located a bottom case on E-bay that I could get the parts off, we'll see how cheap it goes.
