Wireless Encryption
Does anyone use WEP on their airport network? -Ryan Stewart -- I just bought a SMC7004VWBR at CrapUSA for $30 and I am having trouble getting encryption to work. Can someone give me a step by step instrution on what to do? My router will do 64bit WEP or 128bit. My airport card does 40 or 128 (Pismo). I know I'm supposed to try putting a $ in somewhere before the password, but is this on the key generation in the router? or when I enter the key into my airport card? I generate a Key in the router (13 EC DD 7D 26 characters) then i try using this key to connect, but I put a $ in the front? That makes 27 characters IT DOESN'T FIT. Here are the instructions on the SMC site: http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action=support_tools_show_FAQnote_id=367 Entering the 128bit hex has only 26 characters 40bit hex has only 10 characters Thanks G-Books list, Ryan Stewart -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... update on noisy PB
Hi, Last night I kept trying to record to cdr and was not successful. I was able to back up some stuff to a zip drive though. I have been running disk first aid sseveral times and it always comes up fine. Last ight it came up thtat it needed to make minor repairs to the volume. I have disk warrior and I don't believe the drive is super fragmented 12 percent is the figure. I also have Norton but haven't run it yet. Should I try to defrag my hard drive or is that asking for trouble? I don't understand why my cd burner is recording properly. It worked the other night but now it seems to hang on finishing session. Getting so frustrated! Thanks for any advice! Lynn -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OS X (10.2.2) successful on Wallstreet
Hi all, to those who've held back installing OS X on their wallstreet because of all the naysayers, well, count me as one who's found it to run very satisfactory. I did put in a fast (20gb 5400rpm travelstar) Hard drive, and maxed the memory at 512mb, but other than that, my 266mhz G3 wallstreet is stock. And it is running fine. I did give up a tiny bit of functionality (I've got to search for drivers that no longer work for some of my older peripheral, and may not find the), but I also installed OS 9.2.2 on the other partition of the hard drive, so I'll be able to start up on sys 9 if I need to use these again. There is no question that in my mind the OS X interface is much more elegant. It takes some getting used to, especially the file handling and look of the windows. I do also kind of miss all the control panels and the ability to fine tune things more, but I think I can get used to OS X. Sid B -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Puzzling in their duality, Ryan and Amie wrote: Does anyone use WEP on their airport network? I left MacStumbler running on the train on my way home from work a couple of months back, and it picked up 60-odd networks on the way through a variety of business and residential neighbourhoods. About 1/3 of them were WEP-protected, primarily the obviously business-related networks (bearing the names of local banks and TV stations, for example). Personally, I leave mine open when I'm playing a game of Unreal Tournament (the network is actually called UTserver when that happens), but nobody has taken me up on the unspoken invitation to get shot at as of yet. I'm also thinking about sticking a bunch of promotional material (MP3, videos, etc.) for local musicians that I like in an open directory for whoever happens to stumble across it, but haven't tinkered around with the logistics of that kind of file-sharing yet. (It was stupidly easy to do on a Win98 home network, but I'm still getting used to this whole OS X thing, and only have the network up to play with intermittently in any event.) -me -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Congrats to AJ, Amanda, the lower slot will take a 256 low profile sodimm as will the upper, its space is large so up to a 2 inch Sodimm will fit the upper. And I am sending this from a wallstreet with 10.2.6. I have a 233 mhz board in a bag and a 500mhz Blue Chip running in it. Works as well as the daughters Ibook 700 G3. Powerbook G3 Kanga, OS X?
Has many of you on this list own a Kanga? Has anybody sucessfully installed OS X? Now before anybody knocks on me for asking, I'm not looking to do it for everyday use...I just want to do it to have it for fun and mess around alittle bit (Isn't that what hobbies are for?) I have a 5 gig expansion bay HD and want to install OS X on that HD to experiment with it. If anybody has sucessfully done it, please give me pointers, tips and advice on how to make it work. I'm sure I'll probably have to use XPostfacto to make it work, or maybe not? I did a little research but couldn't come up with much about OS X on the Kanga. For starters, I already have 160MB of Ram, 32 gig internal HD running 8.6 and 9.1. Thanks in advance. Re: usb hub
This subject is covered in the current issue of the Voice newsletter of the MacValley User Group, which ran an article about the various problems that can be caused by USB devices and inadequate hubs. All the group experts agreed that the best USB hub by far is the Per-Tech 7-Port Hubmaster, ...a solidly built, if extremely ugly*, piece of equipment, and is to USB hubs what Tripp-Lite is to power strips... I will speculate that the Per-Tech succeeds where others fail due to the fact that it's got a very large internal power supply to stabilize voltage on all devices... www.pertch.net There was also a recent story about Per-Tech at www.macintouch.com which led to a 4-fold increase in demand so ...please be patient... Re: Wireless Encryption
So you are saying I should leave mine open and without WEP? It depends. If you want to make it little more complicated to break in then use WEP - it is easy to configure and does not cause any problems. If you want to keep your network open just leave it as it is. I protect mine, but know that it is just to discourage regular users. Determined hacker could break in, but why would they break into mine when there are other 4 networks in my building that are not protected... Personally I recommend to setup WEP if you have anything on your computer that could compromise you - account numbers, credit card numbers, PINs, financial statements. On top of WEP I have each machine on my network setup with additional level of security - enabled firewall on both windows and mac machines... Call me paranoid. TiBook 667 eats CDs
Hi everyone! I'm back from my trip to Germany and the ol' TiBook DVI performed famously except for 2 eensy weensy problems I had while on my trip: 1) I borrowed a colleague's PC Card Compact Flash adapter just to test out how it compared to using my Canon Powershot s200's USB cable. Everything was fine until I unmounted the volume and then ejected the card (I didnt stop the card though) upon removing the card, Finder restarted, no sweat though. But the second time I used it, I unmounted the volume and then stopped the card. Upon stopping the card, 10.2.7 kernel panicked. (much to the amusement of my anti-mac friend who swiftly took a snapshot for the memories) 2) when burning a CD-RW, the burn failed and the system would then not eject the disc, I ended up having to restart the computer with the trackpad button depressed to retrieve the disc. This is not the first time my system has eaten a piece of writable media without wanting to give it up. Has anyone had these problems before or come up with a solution? Re: Wireless Encryption
menu (you know the one on the right side, near the clock) but then what do i do? I have seen advise about putting a $ sign in before the password? AFAIK Apple uses a hash algorithm to turn a friendly password into a WEP key, so that people don't have to remember keys. If your key is generated by some other piece of hardware, there's no easy way of working out a password that will Apple-hash to the same output value, so putting in $ as the first character in the password tells the Airport software not to hash whatever you typed; just use the hex value following the $ as the key directly. -- Lewin A.R.W. I know the D-Link has a button you check to indicate it is hexadecimal - in this case when you enter it in the base station, don't use the dollar sign. When you enter the password in your Macintosh, put a $ in front of it to indicate that it is hexadecimal. A hexadecimal number consists of the digits 0-9 and the letters a-f. Re: Wireless Encryption
Personally, I have 128-bit encryption running at home. The router needed a hex-value put in, with the same numbers to be entered into the iBook. In OSX that¹s a snap - make the airport menu appear on the menu bar (can't remember where I turned that on...) and select the name of your access point. It will then ask for a password. There is a pull-down menu, which I set to 128-bit hexadecimal, then entered the same number I did with the access point. No $'s or anything else, just the numbers. Hope it helps, Wiebe. Re: whistling powerbook is coming from a/c connection!
Well, I didn't see the earlier postings but my guess is that you have a G3... likely Pismo, or Lombard. Since on those computers the AC board is also the sound card I would guess that it is going bad. I do not know how much they are used (or new) I always had mine covered by Apple Care. -- Ryan On Saturday, Aug 2, 2003, at 20:00 US/Central, Lynn wrote: Hi, I just now have discovere that the whistling is coming from my ac connection to the computer. I thought the hard drive was causing the noise but now know it's the a/c adapter connection. I don't know if this matters, but i am having problems using a cd burner from Que. I was getting erro messages and now it just seems to hang when finishing session. My swappable zip drive works and I was able to backup to that. Wasn't sure if this info was important or not. I have a firewire Que burner and the connection is in the back so wanted this info known to you. I am noticing that my screen is reloading slowly on the desktop and I can see it happening. I have been running disk first aid daily and las tnight it gave a minor volume error and fixed it. I have about 12 percent fragmentation on the hard drive. Haven't run norton yet. Am wondering if my hard drive is indeed okay. Have no idea about soundboards or anything. Will have to look into it. I got a price quote last week for a hard drive and am also tyring to get in touch with another mac guy in the area. Thanks for your expertise! Lynn I just looked at my system profiler and noticed that it is not reading all of the ram. When I click on the apple just to see about computer, it has right amount. In the system profiler, it says that additional ram is not compatible. I had extra ram installed two years ago and it was always fine and showing up in the profiler. COuld it be loose or is something wrong. My applecare just expired in March on the three year extended that I bought. Thanks, Lynn -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wireless Encryption
I have an SMC.. but setting up the router isn't the problem. I put in a password, the router generates a hex key. I pull down the airport connect menu (you know the one on the right side, near the clock) but then what do i do? I have seen advise about putting a $ sign in before the password? Open System Preferences - Network. Make sure the Airport is available for selected profile and then open the Airport section select Airport tab and select your network. You will get prompted for password, then enter the HEX number you received on the router and everything should work. That's what I did on mine. You may also select to remember the password for next time. Jan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: broken charger plug
The plug on the Powerbook-end of my battery charger chord has been accidentally broken into 2 pieces. On 07.29.03 20:47, Jim Katz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This seems to be such a known thing from Apple that they should have come up with a fix for it. When mine went (under Applecare) I didn't even have to bring it in to show them, they knew all about it and I got whole new AC adaptor instantly just for mentioning it. Thanks for the response, Jim, but my plug broke, not due to a manufacturing defect, but because my 210 lb. 16-year old tripped in my office and on the way to the floor reached out for the nearest thing to break his fall which happened to be the slide-out keyboard drawer on which my PowerBook sits. The computer survived the tumble but the plug. Fortunately I'm able to use the charger from my 19-year old's iBook until I can repair or replace mine. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Any advice fellow-listers could give me on this purchase, e.g. best quality, price, self- versus bus-powered, etc., would be greatly appreciated. I got a Belkin for my daughter about 3 years ago when I got her an Indigo iBook (clamshell), and last I heard about it from her, it was still working fine. I don't recall the cost, but it wasn't too bad at all. There may be other manufacturers of USB hubs out there that work as well, so you might do a search on: http://www.pricefinder.com PriceFinder.com or http://www.pricegrabber.com PriceGrabber.com or similar pages for who has the better prices. Bear in mind, some USB hubs (such as the Belkin I got my daughter) need an AC adapter, but others do not. HTH, Jim Rohde Give what you have.
