do? I have seen advise about putting a $ sign in before the password?

AFAIK Apple uses a hash algorithm to turn a "friendly" password into a WEP key, so that people don't have to remember keys. If your key is generated by some other piece of hardware, there's no easy way of working out a password that will Apple-hash to the same output value, so putting in $ as the first character in the "password" tells the Airport software not to hash whatever you typed; just use the hex value following the $ as the key directly.
