OT: noisy fan!

2003-11-20 Thread Laurent Daudelin
A bit off-topic, but didn't know where to ask. The fan on the Radeon card in
my PowerMac Blue White is becoming noisy. Is there anyway to make it
quieter before ultimately disconnecting it? Would disconnecting it have any
ill effect? I'm guessing that if they put a fan on it, there must be a good
reason...

about a particular topic or project. Typically used when someone is going to
let a new party maintain a piece of code. Conceptually analogous to an
operating system core dump in that it saves a lot of useful state before an
exit. You'll have to give me a brain dump on FOOBAR before you start your
new job at HackerCorp. See core dump (sense 4). At Sun, this is also known
as `TOI' (transfer of information).

I am working on a Pismo that had coffee spilled into the keyboard.
The keyboard is NG but the book worked for a few weeks except for an
occasional startup problem. Now it won't start up at all. Does anyone
have any procedures to get it started, and failing that, is it worth
replacing the motherboard? The motherboard and processor card got the
 worst soaking.

 Thanks.

Hi Brendan,

You might want to remove, visually inspect the processor and then reseat it
firmly. Another potential cause is the RAM itself. If the banks of RAM are
stained/damaged you could try removing them and trying with known good
memory banks.

That said, if you are eventually unable to get it working, I'd be very
interested in buying it off you, as I'm putting together a Pismo from spare
parts. If you decide it's not worth your while to repair it (likely, given
the cost of repairs and the price of used powerbooks nowadays), do let me
know about selling it as is.

Good luck,

Chris

This is the third time you've asked this question.

iMovie expects to see the video camera at the built in Firewire port.
This is the way it is coded.
Of course, the Wallstreet does *not* have a built-in Firewire port. I
no longer do video on my Wallstreet, but I used to.
I have used iMovie with a cardbus firewire card (though maybe that
was iMovie 1, it was a while ago). The camcorder was not always
recognized, often depending on the kind of tape it contained - this
was an often debated problem at the time. S

I'd suggest to try and play some different tapes on the camcorder and
see if it makes a difference - sometimes, just replacing the tape for
a while made the camcorder be recognized and then I could but back
the tape I intended and all was well.

If you can't have iMovie work with your setting, I strongly advise you use
BTV Pro (http://www.bensoftware.com). It is Mac OS 9 and X
compatible, very solid, compatible with any video source, and has
quite a few great features (time-lapse capture, dv device control,
etc). Well worth the shareware fee.

Pismo Rubber feet.

2003-11-20 Thread Frank Cornew
As reported previously, I've used round, hemispherical clear
feet/bumperws from the hardware store for some time and prefer them
over the original black feet. (They should look better than a glop of
hot glue.) Nonetheless, give it a try. For those that insist on a
black foot, is hot glue available in black? The feet may also be
available in black, as well - I've seen black square feet, not round
ones. Square feet would definitely look nasty.

Relative to the black feet, they stay put way longer, grip my
inclined workstation far better, and put a bit more space between the
Pismo and the desk for ventilation. It is possible to find these
things in the exact size of the recesses that the old black feet fit
in. For longer lasting results and appearance, I recommend you clean
out vestiges of the old stickum out of the recesses first. GooGone?

I replaced all of the black feet during my first year of ownership of
the Pismo in 2000. Only two have come off since then, and probably
due to being bumped/scraped directly. The originals seemed to peel
off if the PB was slid across a reasonably grippy surface.

May replace them all again as they have yellowed and are a bit
scuffed. Think the originals were 3M brand - other brands may or may
not adhere as well. YMMV.

Think this issue has been beaten to death, but carry on if you wish.

are gone for good. He is looking for ways to replace feet lost in this
manner, much as I am, so I would appreciate an answer for his

I think Clyde WAS answering your question. Ever used a glue gun? You
can certainly push a nice glop of glue out onto any surface the glue
used maintains a high degree of viscosity yet harders to a nice rubbery
feel. It's a great solution and one I plan on testing.

Panther and menu bar?

Hi folks,

I just installed Panther on my TiBook, and now the menu bar is screwed up.
The menus on the left side are fine, but all the little app icons on the
right side (airport, clock, volume, etc) are now gone! They flicker on
occasionally for a second, but are completely unuseable. I installed the
recent Panther update, no change.

External Firewire HD issue ...

2003-11-20 Thread Bryan Forbes
Hi:

I have an external Firewire HD that I'm currently using as a backup
disk for the HD on my Titanium Powerbook. I purchased it from Piranha
Technology (http://www.pirahnatechnology.com/index.asp) over a year ago
and it seems to work fine (after I sent a previous one back to them and
they swapped it out for me for a newer one).

However, this is my delimma. I want to update to Panther from Jaguar,
but I want to backup my Titanium HD before updating to Panther (I use
Synchronize Pro X as my BU software ... with the backup being a
bootable image). However, I want to update my external Firewire Drive
from Piranha before doing so. I have attempted to get a hold of
Piranha, but their tech support email was bounced back to me ... I
cannot get a hold of them via the phone. What I want is to know what
patch has to be applied to the drive I have from them (a list of those
found here ...
http://www.apple.com/macosx/firewire800specialmessage.html). Is there
a way I can determine which flavor of Oxford my drive is so I can apply
the update?

Also, when trying to get a hold of Piranha, I eventually turned to the
Better Business Bureau in their area. The BBB told me they have a
history of not returning phone calls, emails going unanswered,
merchandise sent that is faulty, etc., etc. I told the BBB that
Pirahna is using the BBB logo on their website and that really caught
her interest. I would not do any business with them ... I thought I
was saving some bucks, now it's coming back to haunt me.

Any ideas there ... or can I just upgrade to Panther 10.3.1 and not
worry about the Firewire glitch with the external drive?

A 2nd item ... I want to move all my stuff from my current Tibook to a
new Superdrive Tibook. My wife is getting my current one that only has
a combo-drive. Can I just image my HD over to the new Superdrive one?
Is there a better way of doing that ... I'm afraid I'll lose items on
the new Superdrive book that aren't on the combo drive book. I've
never done a target FW hookup, I know it's not difficult ... I just
want to make sure I'm not overwriting anything that I'd miss later on.

I've also been holding off buying a Family Pack of Panther until the
CD's are burned with the 10.3.1 (and have the .1 update). Is there any
logic to that or should I just go ahead and get it. I have a broadband
connection, so downloading or burning a CD of the update is not an
issue. I'd just like to have the most current copy of the OS ...
according to the rumour sites, yet another release (.2) is about ready
to come out that solves even a few more items.

Insights/solutions welcomed ...

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your drive. I have used it a few times and
it always worked fine.

10.3.1 is supposed to fix the Firewire problem but if you want to stay on
the safe side, just unmount your disk in the Finder and then disconnect it
from your Macintosh before rebooting.

To move your stuff from one PowerBook to the other, use one of them in
Firewire target mode. Restart then immediately press the 'f' key until you
see the Firewire symbol on screen. You can then connect it to a Firewire
Macintosh with a regular cable and the hard disk should appear on the
desktop.

I'm looking at replacing the hinges in my wallstreet *again*, this is the
third time for this unit through it's lifespan with two owners. Is there a
better quality hinge available for them, or are wallstreet users stuck with
purchasing the original inadequate part for another temporary fix?
I read a post the other day that mentioned the new stainless steel
hinges, and that got me wondering...

I have the same question. Any answers out there? A guy at the Tysons
Corner, Va. Apple Store this morning told me that it will take quite some
time for the initial production of 10.3 to run out. He said Jaguar 10.2 CDs
made it only up to 10.2.3 or 10.2.4 while the updates on-line went to
10.2.8.

Andrew
I can recommend the replacement hinges from Powerbook parts, they
replaced the hinges on my (now my Mom's) Wallstreet 266.
http://www.pbparts.com/store/agora.cgi?p_id=wssr
They don't sell the hinges but for $79 installed that was fine with me.
The stock hinges are $69...

Ouch! That was expensive! You could almost have got a used Pismo for that
price, certainly a Lombard 400MHz...

Re: External Firewire HD issue ...

2003-11-20 Thread Thomas Ethen
I had a Piranha drive and after almost a year of dealing with them I finally
tossed it, as it was so unreliable that it was not worth messing with.
Piranha was of absolutely no help at all during a year of basically one way
communication with them-I communicated, they failed to respond most of the
time.

Tom

Also, when trying to get a hold of Piranha, I eventually turned to the
Better Business Bureau in their area. The BBB told me they have a
history of not returning phone calls, emails going unanswered,
merchandise sent that is faulty, etc., etc. I told the BBB that
Pirahna is using the BBB logo on their website and that really caught
her interest. I would not do any business with them ... I thought I
was saving some bucks, now it's coming back to haunt me.

Did you install or had installed if you did an update, any non-Apple

Well, I have a similar problem after an Archive/Install. They flicker
(they are still there, but the graphics are messed up).

Then, did you have under Panther and do you still have 3rd party menu items?
One thing I did on my PowerBook was to create a dummy account. Whenever I
start experiencing a strange behavior in my account, I login into the dummy
account that I didn't modify since it has been created. Then, if the problem
doesn't occur, then this is something I did install in my account.

dinosaur n.: 1. Any hardware requiring raised flooring and special power.
Used especially of old minis and mainframes, in contrast with newer
microprocessor-based machines. In a famous quote from the 1988 Unix EXPO,
Bill Joy compared the liquid-cooled mainframe in the massive IBM display
with a grazing dinosaur with a truck outside pumping its bodily fluids
through it. IBM was not amused. Compare big iron; see also mainframe. 2.

I tend to stay away from the haxies other than themes, simply because I
usually don't need em, and unless they use APE, are a risk I don't feel
like taking for a feature I never used when it was available under OS
9.

This effect was without any additional software under 10.3, and now
under 10.3.1, before I started adding my personal packages/etc that
didn't just drag/drop into my Apps folder. My issue seems to be related
to resolution switching, although it sometimes happens randomly on my
Lombard when the screen is supposed to update. Odd, but not the end of
the world.
