DiskWarrior problem

2003-12-02 Thread Michel Treisman
Thanks to Phil Burk and Darin for comments. I tried running DW from the
CD but even that does not
seem to work OK. It found stuff wrong with one partition, rebuilt the
directory for the partition, replaced the
directory. Then I tried to rebuild the same directory again, and the
same stuff was wrong. Several times.

I am waiting for the next DW update.

Disk Warrior cannot run effectively when launched from a Panther
volume. An
update fro Alsoft is on the way. In the meantime, simply boot from the
Disk
Warrior CD and fix to your heart's content. Frankly, Using DW from the
CD is
always the best way to go.

Hope this helps.

Mike,
Is your Mac capable of booting into Mac OS 9? Next question... Do you have a
copy of Disk Warrior prior to Disk Warrior X. I think the version was 2.1.x.

If you can boot into 9 and have the Disk Warrior CD, try running it from
there.

Otherwise, I'm stumped. Please let us know how this situations pans out.

Good luck.

If you partition you drive to keep 9 on a separate partition, should
you need to do a clean OS X install, you won't have to re-install 9.
Plus, it makes troubleshooting easier since the folders from OS 9 are
not mixed up with those from OS X.
I personally wouldn't do it. It is possible to do an archive and
install instead of a completely clean install with the OS X installer.
This will leave your user data and any other installations in place on
your drive and not clobber them upon install. There shouldn't be a
need to do a complete clean install unless you wipe the drive and then
you'll be needing a backup anyway.

If you feel the need to partition I would only do a small OS 9
partition in addition to the OS X partition. Every time I partition a
drive for personal use in hopes of more efficient organization I
eventually run out of space on one partition or another. Depends on
your usage, of course...

Two things. One, got a recent backup? *grin* Two, contact Alsoft
tech support with this issue if you have a drive that never seems to be
repaired with DW. If you are using DW 3 does the SMART check return
that the drive is functioning OK? I suspect that you may have a
hardware problem if DW cannot fix recurring errors.

One advantage of separate partitions is that you can hold down the
option/alt key at startup to choose which system to boot into; that's
quite a timesaver if you frequently switch between 9 and X.

Powerbook G3 (Lombard) RAM Problem! HELP!

2003-12-02 Thread Ho Jianghai
Hi...
Just bought some RAM to upgrade my Lombard (G3 400) and found it crashing
with OS X very often... Anyone know the problem?

My original configuration: 128 (high profile) + 64 (Low profile) (worked
fine)

1st change: 256 (paccom high profile) + 64 (same one) (fine as well)

2nd change: 256 (paccom high profile) + 256 (low profile, transcend 256, PC
100, CL2 (works on PeeCee notebook)) (frequent crashes)

3rd change: 256 (paccom high profile) + 256 (low profile, twinmos , PC 133,
CL3 (works on PeeCee notebook as well)) (frequent crashes also)

4th change: 128 (same high profile) + 256 (low profile, twinmos , PC 133,
CL3 (works on PeeCee notebook as well)) (lasted at least 12 hours from last
test, seems to be fine)

Called apple and they said it was because RAM was non-original. Asked me to
use the hardware test CD but I didn't get one when I bought the thing.
Didn't even know there was such a thing.

What should I do?

Help !!! (and thanks in advance...)

Call the place where you bought the memory and try to return it or ask for
an exchange that will work with your Lombard. If they can't provide you with
a replacement for your Lombard, ask for a refund. Then, go to one of the
places that sell guaranteed memory for Apple laptops. I've been dealing with
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamem.com/ and never had any problem with
their memory. Plus, they had very good prices. I'm not affiliated in any way
with them, just a past satisfied customer.

Re: Partition my drive or not...

2003-12-02 Thread Frank P. Eigler
My advice goes from yes to definately yes ;-)

Partitions:

1st - OS 9.2 (3GB), if you want to boot into 9 directly
Having it first allows you to boot directly by holding down the d key.
No start-up manager or start-up disk hassles.

2nd - OS X (min 5GB) itself, by itself. If you ever need to reinstall or
start over you'll appreciate this.

3rd - Any scratch disk requirements ala Photoshop? Amt varies depending
on need.

4th - You *may* want to have a separate data partition. Apps crap out?
Reinstall. Data craps out? Use your back-up - and a separate partition
makes backing up a whole lot easier.

There are good arguments for making a separate partition for the swap
file, but not on a single-drive unit like a laptop.

I've aslso seen folks advocate separate user, mail and fonts partitions.

YMMV

HTH!

DiskWarrior problem

2003-12-02 Thread Michel Treisman
Darin,
I have a Tibook, 1 GHz, which doesn't boot into OS 9, as far as I know.
From the CD, DW rebuilds three partition directories, but on the
fourth partition,
as I said, the rebuilding doesn't take. If it worries me too much, I
will erase the
fourth partition and reinstall 10.3. Till then, I'll wait for Alsoft
to update DW

All the best,Mike

...Pismo + OS X....

2003-12-02 Thread Jim Scolman
Hello I am the very happy owner of a 400 Mhz Pismo, with 256MB RAM and the
6 GIG HD, that is about half full. I am currently using OS 9.2.2, and am
happy with it. But, I am thinking of OS X. I have access to a copy of OS X
that came on a 500 Mhz iMac, an early one. How do you think that would run
on my Pismo? I know I need more RAM, but it is not happening just now. Is
there room on my HD for OS X and still have space to work? How far can I
upgrade/update before I run into a fee?, that is how many free updates for
OS X are there on the Apple web site? I want to use the OS X eMail and
browser apps, as well as use the apps I use know, which are Photoshop v6.x,
MS Office, Appleworks, etc. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Jim Scolman.

First, although the Pismo is a great Mac OS X machine (I myself am typing
this under 10.3.1 on a Pismo 400), you don't have enough hard drive space
and/or memory to make it truly a pleasant experience.

On the low-end Pismo, I don't recommend anything less than 384 MB memory.
Also consider that Mac OS X will eat up about another 1 GB of your hard
drive space. Plus, all the new Mac OS X-native software will eat up more
space. Upgrade the drive to at least 10 GB, if not more, if you can.

You also don't mention the exact version of Mac OS X you have. If it is
anything earlier than Mac OS X 10.2, I would reconsider. Mac OS X 10.1.5 and
below were much more of a dog of an OS, especially on this hardware. Mac OS
X 10.2 can be purchased fairly cheaply now (Other World Computer usually has
good deals on older OS's).

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Scott

Re: ...Pismo + OS X....

Hello I am the very happy owner of a 400 Mhz Pismo, with 256MB RAM and the

happy with it.

You don't mention which version came with that iMac, but I would think that
if it's not at least 10.2, then you might not enjoy it. Plus, Safari, the
Apple's browser, won't work on 10.1, it needs at least 10.2. 10.3 (Panther)
would be even better. Memory is pretty cheap these days. You could probably
buy 2 256MB chips for around $50-$60. Same for the hard disks. You could
probably find a 20GB cheap on eBay. PhotoShop 6 will work in Classic only,
so you lose the OS X advantage. I'm pretty sure that you also have a Classic
version of Office. If you want to run it in OS X, then that's another
purchase, as Microsoft won't let you upgrade from Office 2001 to Office v.X,
even though both versions are virtually the same, which is a shame, IMHO.
Apple offers free update to bring AppleWorks 6 OS X native, so you're fine
here. That's pretty much it, I would think...

Japanese Language Kit vs. OS 9.x update Catch-22 [longish]

2003-12-02 Thread Rodney A. Hoiseth
Hi there,

Excuse the post to multiple lists, but I'm not optimistic about a solution to this
Apple catch-22.
I'm on digest, so please Cc me or reply directly if you have the answer or a
suggestion so I won't miss the answer.
(I've been really busy and have been neglecting a lot of my digests, so if this topic
has come up before, I'd really appreciate a gentle nudge in the right direction...)

I'm using OS 9 on a 233 MHz G3 PowerBook (Wallstreet).
I bought and have been using OS 9.0.4 - International English - and its Japanese
Language Kit.

I have downloaded and installed the updates, 9.1 and then 9.2.1 (and 9.2 seems to be
working great).
The problem is that I can no longer install the Language kit that is included on my OS
9 CD (or can I?).

According to the Read Me and installation instructions for the updates:
Apple Language Kits and Mac OS 9.2
Apple's language kits are now included with the Mac OS. If you use language kits, you
must upgrade both your system software and your language kits at the same time using
the Mac OS 9.2 CD. Versions of Apple language kits prior to Mac OS 9.1 (Language Kits
1.1) are not compatible with Mac OS 9.2. To upgrade your system software and language
kits, start up from the Mac OS 9.2 CD by inserting the CD and holding down the C key
as you restart the computer. Continue holding down the C key until you see the CD
background. Open the Mac OS Installer and click Customize in the Install Software
panel. Select both the Mac OS Install and Language Kits, and remember to select the
specific language kits you want to upgrade.

Of course since I've downloaded the update, I don't have the CD, and the Language Kit
is not included in the download.

I'd be willing to pay a bit extra for a CD -- or even buy a new OS package just for
the privilege of continuing to use the Japanese Language Kit -- if they were
available.
Well, yesterday I went to the sexy new Apple Store in Ginza (Tokyo) to see if they
could help me. The nice Apple service rep there told me, Well, OS 9.2 is not
available any more. Then in the next breath, he said, There is one solution: If you
buy OS X, for an extra 2500 yen, you can order the 9.2.1 CD.
When I pointed out the contradiction he laughed and said, Ahem, aah, ...
Then I asked if he could point me to a place where I might find a solution, he said,
Well, yes, there's the Apple Call Center [Japan]...; but when I responded, But
they'll give me the same answer you just gave me, right? he said, Yes.

I'm not ready to upgrade to OS X for a year or two (I've heard contradictory
statements about how feasible it is on a 233 MHz PowerBook, and I'm not quite ready
for a new computer), and I don't want to buy OS X now just for the privilege of
buying a CD for a previous [free] update, since there's no guarantee I won't run into
a similar catch-22 when I'm ready to use it.

So, what are my options? Or do I have any?

Incidentally, I have tried installing the Language Kit for 9.0.4 on a backup boot 9.1
system on my expansion-bay hard disk and, although it seems to handle Japanese
applications OK, there seem to be some menu problems, etc. I haven't really compared
it with the previous (9.0.4) performance, so I don't know exactly what the bugs are
(and which are features ;-). Prior to OS 9, I had been using KanjiTalk on a separate
partition. [That's still an option, but it's a lot of trouble to switch systems
between English and Japanese...]
I'm not misinterpreting the caution in the ReadMe, am I? I do know for a fact that the
updates refuse to install on 9.0.4 with the Language Kit already installed. That comes
up in a dialogue box when you try to do the installation. Does anybody know what,
exactly, are the incompatibilities I'd encounter if I installed the Language Kit from
the 9.0.4 CD after installing the 9.1/9.2.1 updates?

Regards,
Rodney
(in Hayama, Japan)

PCMCIA card and Wallstreet

2003-12-02 Thread Andre Ruegg
I have just purchased my first PCMCIA card (a combo USB 2 and Firewire) card
for my Wallstreet. I am surprised by the amount of force it seems to require
to properly seat the card. Is this normal or is there a problem with the
card.

Thanks in advance,

Andre

The card should be fine. The force that it requires is probably due to the
nature of the PCMCIA card cage and the springs that push the card out when
you eject it from the system or by pressing one of the little button. As has
been documented before, the design of the ejection mechanism in the
Wallstreet was problematic. I had to replace the card cage 3 times when I
had a Wallstreet. Apple changed the design completely with the Lombard and
later, the Pismo, for a push lever. No springs anymore that put constantly
that pressure on the card, so the laptop can eject it.

I would suggest that you whether keep the card all the time, or you just use
it when you need it...
