G3 Powerbook control panels questions

2003-12-31 Thread Greenfield Bowie
Hello G3 Powerbook gurus,

As a recent new owner of a PB G3 (Lombard, Mac OS 9.2), I've been on
the lookout for and read several related FAQ lists, but still had a
question or two about this new computing environment for me.

1. Energy saver control panel. I've always set the sleep setting to
never on my various PowerMacs, not wanting to cause problems with
longer WWW downloads, etc., getting by with just a screen saver. All
that's changed now, particularly because of the occasional need to
conserve battery power. Is it still possible, or advisable to set
the Energy saver control panel to never?

2. Since I notice now an additional trackpad control panel, is the
mouse control panel still necessary, or should it be de-activated in
extensions manager?

Thanks for any insight on these questions.

Regards,

Greenfield Bowie

Clamshell HDD

2003-12-31 Thread David George Hogg
Hi all,
Just a question about a clamshell ibooks HDD. I am looking to
upgrade the pitifully small 3.2GB hdd to a 20GB, could somebody tell me
the type of drive I would need.
David.
PS Also, is there a way to bypass the 320mb memory limit?

iBook vs PowerBook 12

2003-12-31 Thread Peter Johnsen
Hi

I am thinking about buying a new iBook or PowerBook. Basically what I want
is to be able to use an external monitor preferably a pivot 15 or 17. I
like to be able to see a whole A4 page at once.

So my question is would the iBook suffice? Can it only mirror the internal
screen or could it also turn it around to a pivot monitor?

-Peter

If you are on battery you WANT it to sleep if you stop using it. If you are
connected power it isn't quite so important but you certainly want the
display to dim and hard drive to spin down when not in use. No reason to
have the machine generating heat when it is sitting unused.

Control Panels take up no memory so there is no benefit to deactivating.
Further, many of us find that when we are sitting at a desk or take that
using a mouse and keyboard is more comfortable than using the trackpad. So
don't disable it.

And if you're doing a long slow download the HD will be active so it won't go to sleep
though the screen may go blank. I've got my PB set to sleep at 5 minutes.

I don't think that's correct. I used to use a program many years ago that worked much
like Extensions Manager except that it also showed how much RAM each Control Panels
and Extension used. Some Control Panels are really just programs that run but some of
them do load into memory upon booting.

On battery you definitely want it to sleep in a short time. You
probably aren't going to be doing any long downloads on battery. The
Energy Saver control panel has separate settings for battery and AC.
I would still let the screen, drive and system sleep on AC. A
Powerbook is a very dense collection of circuitry and while it
hopefully won't ever overheat it still tends to run hotter than a
desktop. Letting it sleep when it's not busy is a good idea. It
shouldn't sleep while you are downloading.

Sometimes I've run into problems where it won't wake from screen
sleep. In those cases where I can identify the problem it has turned
out that it was simply a program hanging and it only happened to have
the screen asleep when it happened. When I have a persistent problem
like this I do set the screen to not sleep. Then I have some clue
what happened.

2. Since I notice now an additional trackpad control panel, is the
mouse control panel still necessary, or should it be de-activated in

It doesn't hurt to leave it active. It just controls the settings,
the actual part that is using the settings is built into the OS.

Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

2003-12-31 Thread Clyde Kahrl
I purchased a D-link 614+ wireless router. The router does all
internet stuff OK in both wireless and otherwise mode. I can even
turn off the DHCP so that it can work in the network that already has
an asante router going to the cable modem and other switches.

HOWEVER, whether I am just going from port to port, or through the
WAN port or through wireless, I cannot see any of the network. I
cannot see the other OSX macs, or the OS9 macs or the appletalk or
the usb printers. Yes I turned on appletalk and so forth.

What's going on here? Does D-link not support some protocols? How
can I not see the macs if I am looking for ftp servers?

Anyway, do I need to sell this router?

Couldn't hurt to at least call them...

I purchased a Pismo for myself last Christmas on Ebay. A couple of months
ago my yo-yo adapter started sparking. I called Apple and they mailed out a
replacement the same day. I mentioned the sparking and the person I talked
to sounded concerned about a fire hazard. No charge to me at all.

However, about a month later the wall cord had the same problem. I called
Apple again and got a replacement but this one they charged me for.

Give it a try and Good Luck!

Depends on if you are likely to get a portable mouse to use. I have an
IBM optical mouse 2-button (which was under $20 because it had been
returned), and it works find with the USB Overdrive drivers). Some
programs might utilize Mouse CP setting, too, but I'll let others address

Well worth the effort for those who love thier iBooks, not difficult to
do but slow methodical work will be rewarded with a successful HD
transplant. I upgraded my clamshell's HD to a 20GB (iBooks all limited to
9.5mm max height BTW), as well as the CD to a CD-RW. The expansion RAM is
limited to 512mb sodimms, not 256mb as per Apple's specs, but you must
get a sodimm specced for the iBook as some chip densities and layouts
aren't compatible.

Webcams, Yahoo Messenger

2003-12-31 Thread w miller
Does anyone have advice on a Webcam to use with OS 9.2.2 on a Lombard
for Yahoo Messenger? I'm finding them for OS X.
Also, does anyone know why I can't hear someone talking when we're
online, with the other person using a Webcam? I have no problem seeing him.

Pismo 400,10.3.2 PLW NTR

2003-12-31 Thread Kochkodin
Greetings and Happy New Year Lista's,
A quick question for the cognoscenti in the groupI have a Pismo
400 and an Imac SE 400 that I have been using with 10.3.2 and a PLW LS
via a Keyspan serial/usb converter. The systems have worked perfectly
until the other week when the LS showed a scanner motor malfunction and
diedI do have a PLW NTR that works perfectly with my Performa 5200
(8.6) and LC II (7.0?) and want to know if I can use it with the
Pismo/Imac via the Keyspan converter.. I also have a Dayna Ethernet to
Local Talk bridge unit that I got off the LEM list but there wasn't a
manual with it and I can't figure out how it worksEvidentally Intel
bought out Dayna and has ceased supporting any Dayna products. The NTR
was used by my wife at her school and is in great condition and I have a
couple of toner carts that I can use...The printer is rarely used
because I dropped Earthlink dialup and switched to Verizon DSL in October.
So how about it??? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions about the
possibility of getting this combo to work? If this is deemed OT, I
apologize in advance..Any replies can be sent off list if desired...
Again..Best wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous new year to all
the list members
   Regards,
   Mike K

Re: Problems with iDisk

2003-12-31 Thread William2003
I just signed on to .Mac after getting a new 12 PB for Christmas but I
am just getting the idisk icon on my desktop with a construction sign
image on it. I installed the idisk utility but am unable to move any
images or files onto the idisk.

Any suggestions ?
