Re: USB to ethernet
Does anyone know if there is a Mac compatible (Mac OSX) usb-ethernet adapter that would work with a usb printer. The idea is to hook the printer to the ethernet port of the D-Link wireless router to use with our wireless notebooks. I can use a wireless usb print server, but I want to investigate a more economical solution (if there is one). Thanks for all the help in advance. Noisy harddrive ?
Hi! :o) I have a 500MHz Pismo with a noisy 20GB drive. Mayby I should say whiney as I doubt the drive is about to expire. I am currently trying to eliminate all grey sounds from my office room as I really suffer from noise polution, and now that I have blocked the air vent etc. it's the ac which makes the most noise. Grinding, hammering and so on doesn't bother me the slightest, but humming, whining drives me up the phu**ing wall... Anyway, my questing is this, is there anything one can do other than actually replace the drive ? I have set the drive to stop automatically but there always seems to be a reason for it to start again immediately... Re: OT: Internet Service Provider?
There was a discussion the other day about ISPs for 56K, and Earthlink was mentioned several times. I experienced frustratingly frequent disconnections with them, though I'm not sure what was to blame for that. I've been using NetZero now, however, for several weeks and have had zero problems, and it's less than half the cost of Earthlink's service, i.e. $9.95/month. The download, either OS 9 or 10, is very quick and is unobtrusive. (They'll even give me $20 for anyone who signs up and cites me [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their reference, and I'll donate half of anything I get from them to G-Books.) OT: ISPs
I like Earthlink because of SpamBlocker, which has been GREAT at catching spam before it gets to my Inbox on my dialup account. I don't use any Earthlink software at all, which means I had to enter all the names in my Address Book to their online site. It's been worth it. As for dropped connections, I think this is a problem with my Wall Street's modem. It doesn't happen with my Amigas using the same phone jack, same account, and an external modem for the Amigas. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Spam Volume [was : Re: OT: Internet Service Provider?]
people. Another thing that has been a real treat is that with earthlink I was inundated with BAD spam (you know what I mean) to the tune of 20 to 30 a day. With Verizon I get none, absolutely none. I hope I don't jinx it by saying that out loud on a list. Go for it. One reason you're probably seeing less spam is that you have a new e-mail address... If your new address is posted on the web, it will be only a matter of time before it is harvested and the spam begins again. My primary e-mail address (and about two dozen forwarding aliases) appear all over my various web sites. Because of this I receive about 2000 UCE per month. I recently posted a totally fresh address (new address, new domain, etc) on a web site for which I've done from freelance work. I started receiving spam and virus infected e-mails on that address within 3 weeks of it appearing on the 'net. As far as I can tell, as long as there is e-mail, there will be spam. = Doug Behr [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do you Yahoo!? Get better spam protection with Yahoo! iBook+iMac to share modem connection?
Gianfranco: It's really easy! All that's needed is the appropriate Airport cards for each computer. Note that the iMac will also require a special holder for the card, and either Small Dog Electronics (list-sponsor--yay!) or Other World Computing, or any other mail-order firm that is wise to Macintosh can reaffirm exactly which card and adapter is needed for the two Macs. After installing the Airport cards into the laptop and the iMac (which is easy to do yourself), then you use the iMac's modem to dial up the internet. Then you use the built-in Airport Software to establish a Software Base Station, which lets the iMac itself be the base station! Then all you need to do is join the wireless net with the laptop! Yes, you can also do filesharing and local-area-networking over this wireless arrangement (whether or not you've dialed up the internet). The only drawback to this is that whenever you want to go online with the laptop, you must have the iMac on and connected to the internet. In my case, my DSL line comes in the house at an inconvenient place, so I just have an Airport base station there, and use the iMac and powerbook elsewhere in the house. One or both. So long as the base station is on and active, regardless of whether it's plugged into the internet, I can still share files from one mac to the other. Hope this helps! --Jim. gf sciacca [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm new to networking and wireless and had this question posed by my brother. You have to use their software only to dial up. After you're logged on, you can use the browser and e-mailer of your choice. Haven't had to use their service/tech support so I cannot comment. AirPort problem
I've been having problems with my graphite AirPort Base Station. I had to replace the 2 blown capacitors to make it work again. I'm not using it much since it is much faster to use built-in Ethernet when moving large files between my PowerBook and my Blue White (both at 100Mbps). Last weekend, I had to temporary move to a different room with my Pismo. I then realized that I was unable to connect to my ABS. I did disassemble it to see if something was wrong from my repair or otherwise. Didn't find anything. I tried using another Wavelan card in it to no avail. Then, by pure coincidence, I found out that if I would put it within 2 feet of my Pismo, I was able to connect to it. Moving the base station a couple of feet and I would lose the signal completely. Using Internet Connect and KisMAC, I did monitor the signal while moving it out and in both software, the signal drops to nothing all of a sudden. I then proceeded to open my Pismo to check my internal AirPort card. I did unplug the internal antenna. Everything seems to be fine. Is it possible that the internal antenna wire has been broken up, resulting in that bad reception? I haven't been rough or anything with my Pismo, taking it to work every day but that's pretty much it. Although, a couple of months ago, I had to reseat the processor daughtercard. The base station is sitting where it has always been sitting. There are no new phone or anything that could cause interference. Net Zero has giving me nothing but trouble. I tried to use them for my Mom and her Imac, after their site crashed twice trying to sign up, we went and renewed her back in Earthlink. Then a few weeks go by and she received a welcome letter to Net Zero, we replied that we had not finished the application process, but if it did go through by some miracle, then we wanted to cancel since we did not use it at all. A few more weeks go by and the same email comes back, we cancelled again by email and also on their website. We never saw any charges for 2 months on her credit card, then on the 3rd month, she was charged for all 3 months (and we never signed on for their service). We have been fighting this ever since. One more note about Net Zero, in order to speak with a live person for any reason, you have to use a toll number which costs $1.98/ minute and is charged automatically to your phone bill.
